I weirdly don’t hate the design of https://www.freetelly.com but what I do hate is the implication that all my data and surveillance can be bought for a TV valued at $500. Look, Google knows everything about me but they’ve given me tons of “value” at least.

I write a lot about misinformation in science. When our leading society journal perpetuates it, that's a big problem because other media outlets follow their lead. Here's NPR: https://www.npr.org/2023/05/14/1176062276/fake-studies-in-academic-journals-may-be-more-common-than-previously-thought
So there's a humiliatingly poor news story in Science (yes, the AAAS publication) this week entitled "Fake scientific papers are alarmingly common". https://www.science.org/content/article/fake-scientific-papers-are-alarmingly-common

Guess what? You can rebuild the Bluesky app without writing much code because we just open sourced the code for this app. Why are we doing this? Because we are philosophically open-source... We believe sharing = more people building WITH us.
alright folks, the app code is now public https://github.com/bluesky-social/social-app

nontechnical version: this is a big deal + huge step for transparency! most companies keep their code private/proprietary, but bc ours is public, you can literally see every implementation (how we make buttons blue, how mute lists work, etc) & what we're working on at any given moment

My Bluesky posts now have an RSS feed, thanks to John Spurlock. https://rss.firesky.tv/?filter=%40davew It's got stuff that Mastodon's RSS feed doesn't. This is awesome.

As you get excited about Bluesky, think about where you are in the five stages of early adopter behavior. 1. Discovery 2. Evangelism 3. Mainstream Use 4. Entitlement 5. Abandonment Everybody starts in 1 and 2. 2008 Post: https://www.louisgray.com/2008/06/five-stages-of-early-adopter-behavior.html

This is a great resource; but also, these accounts aren’t “just” annoying content farms — they’re the foundation on which systemic platform manipulation is built. Eventually, they’re resold and repurposed. There’s no good solution except banning them from the network.
I started to put together a list of content scraper accounts I've found. I recommend you actually block them tho (not just subscribe to the mute list). If you know of others, let me know!

As a Nigerian toddler in poverty, fell and scratched her eye badly. Got infected. Grandpa walked to a free clinic 16+ miles away. Dr said "Lucky you brought her! She would've lost the eye!" Mom said, "I almost lost an eye just because I'm poor?! This system sucks!" She's an Opthalmic surgeon now.

If Twitter went away, Americans will still enjoy extraordinary freedom of expression, online & off. But if Twitter doesn't protect the speech of the rest of humanity when authoritarians demand tweets be removed, from Iran to India to Turkey, Elon Musk will have silenced billions.

Wondering how often, the graph at https://bsky.jazco.dev is updated, given that the stats are now 2 days out of date...
