This morning at breakfast my daughter asked what the saddest song I'd ever heard was. Thankfully, I had "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" fresh on my mind, because that's a more acceptacle answer to give an 8-year-old ("remember, the one about the shipwreck?") than "If We Were Vampires"

I was always mad about that song as a kid, bc it absolutely sets you up and then KNOCKS YOU DOWN. My fella loved/es to play guitar and sing with the kids, and consequently my 24yo claims lowkey PtMD trauma.

Its rough. All songs about childhood passing are big rough but puff is the death of dreams. Those dreams get placed into some cave in the back of your mind. Now I am sad. I have a kid. She can be a kid as long as she likes.

I think if a person was a sensitive kid, having kids can be hard. I felt all their troubles vicariously and wanted to protect them, but also wanted them to have their own learning experiences and calluses (literal+metaphorical) ofc. Big best wishes to you and your kid 🖤

One of my friends lost his wife way too young earlier this year. At the funeral, it was announced that a niece would be playing and singing this song. Everyone on my row went, "oh no." The niece had to hum it because she couldn't make it through.

The lady Gordon Lightfoot wrote Sundown about later injected John Belushi with his fatal drug dosage and she herself died in 2020. RIP x 3 🪦🪦🪦

I know that song. But try Skibereen - an Irish folk song about the Great Potato Famine in Ireland in the 1840s -and a population reduced by millions in just 10 years by starvation, death and emigration. Hence so many went to America. God Bless America.

I went through a phase a few years ago where I would send "If We Were Vampires' to folks I was dating and lose interest if they didn't get it. I don't think it's sad at all. It's a beautiful song about accepting mortality and choosing what yo do with our limited minutes on earth.

there are so many i could pick but the one that will always make me cry is "First Love/Late Spring" by Mitski "And I was so young when I behaved 25 Yet now I find I've grown into a tall child And I don't wanna go home yet Let me walk to the top of the big night sky" has me bawling every time

Two that come to mind: “Mama’s Hungry Eyes” - Merle Haggard. Can’t get out of poverty despite working hard. “Holding Her and Loving You” - Earl Thomas Conley. Man realizes he married a good woman, but not the right woman. Both went to number 1 on the country charts

Vampires is equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful to me. “Shotgun” from Evan Bartels is up there (not a good answer for an 8yo, but… damn)

That's the right call tbh. There's definitely categories to sad songs, some let you know there's a tinge of beauty, others just straight up gut you Sneaky sad song: Learned recently Red Hot Chili Peppers "Death of A Martian" was about Flea's dog and now that's a completely different song to my ears

There’s a country song called “If I Die Young” that features the line, “funny when you’re dead how people start listening.” And it just has always stuck with me ever since I heard it almost 15 years ago.

I used to think “Wildfire” was really sad when I was a kid. Now after living with my mom w/dementia, whose singer-songwriter playlist is constantly on repeat around here, I realize it’s actually a Poe-level Zombie Horse Girl song and mostly just creepy.

I forget who joked about it, but Margaritaville is the saddest song. “Not back when it was written - now, now that there are actual Margaritaville bars in malls. Wasted away again!”

The Raven That Refused to Sing by Steven Wilson is absolutely gutting but I think Swan Song by Bruce Hornsby hits me harder. My dad and I both love his music and a few years ago we realized it was both of our favorite song of his. Made me realize I'll probably play it at his funeral...

“Last Kiss” by the Cavaliers. I was only 5 when this song was released, but I listened to in my teens all the time. It is so sad. This is my 2nd day here, so amazing how nice people are on this app, no mean stuff, nice conversations.🙂💙

A friend once had a love song playlist suggestions post. I suggested “If We Were Vampires” because it’s a love song to me. Response after listening was “Well that certainly brought the mood down.” My saddest song is “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” by Patty Loveless, but I’m from Eastern KY so…

Also Green Fields of France or There Were Roses for two in a similar vein. Oddly, signing The Band Played Waltzing Matilda was one of the only two songs that could reliable out my sons to sleep when they were infants (along with Sweet Afton)

There are a few absolutely amazing songs that I have to skip because they are too good. If I'm not in a place where I can spend a few minutes regaining my composure I just can't do it. If we were vampires is top of that list.

"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" goes incredibly hard for a song about 29 people dying in a bad storm on Lake Superior. The intro is immediately recognisable, the chord choices just work so well.

There was a recent topic of songs that will make you cry from Ms Mojo on YT. If I knew how to link without it leading to my playlists lol, I would put it here. Some of them: My Immortal - Evanescence Hurt - Johnny Cash Cats in the Cradle - Harry Chapin Dance with My Father - Luther Vandross

"Fast Car" is crushing. The first three fourths are about (A) hardships, (B) bright spots in them, and (C) trying to work your way out. OK, this could really end on a high note. Nope, the song ends with the narrator kind of giving up back at square one.

Vampires might possibly be one of the greatest songs ever written. Definitely sad underpinnings but I always hear that song as a tribute to the beauty of life and the gift of mortality— because there’s a beginning and an end, it is special. Infinite is boring. 🙏

My go to for this is "Ambulance Blues" by Neil Young. This is more the resigned grief type of sadness, as opposed to say the depressed rage of something like Modest Mouse's "Polar Opposites." So, depends what your poison is, but it's a good one.
