Judging from the replies, an astounding number of people still cannot grasp that "taking all the prominent liberal and progressive voices and putting them on a remote island where no ordinary people or institutions interact with them will reduce the political influence of liberals and progressives"

David Roberts@volts.wtf

It's hard to avoid the conclusion that Bluesky has been a net negative for US politics. They corralled everyone on the left into a little glass fishbowl where they shout at one another & everyone else ignores them. Meanwhile, all the pols & institutions stayed on X & are being dragged farther right.

I don’t think people disagree with that so much as people disagree with the implication that keeping them in the torture chamber of X (where, let’s be clear, due to algorithm changes they no longer had any real influence anyway) would somehow have been better for anyone involved

It’s only a matter of time before they show up on Bluesky, whether it’s arrogance, ignorance or the depths of their conservative indoctrinated confidence. I will add while far from woke they are slipping from MAGA REM to conscience reality that results in a hushed cry of victimization by their cult

There is a lot of value in liaising with others who have similar values. It helps build strength in one’s convictions and avoid the toxicity of the Twitter platform and others

Hi, twitter refugee here. I had 2000+ followers and would typically get 1 to 2 views on a post. I now have 6000 followers and get hundreds of interactions so no, i'm good, thanks.

I left Twitter because the algorithm only sent me rightwing nuts. I had to go look for the journalists, historians, authors etc that I had chosen to follow. Every day, a whole feed of wingnuts.

"Keeping them in the torture chamber of X (where, let’s be clear, due to algorithm changes they no longer had any real influence anyway).." Accurately Stated! We were digitally obscured under elmo's algorithmic cloak of invisibility. Practically erased for having thoughts contrary to his.

I miss having *somewhat* rational exchanges with people on the right. It was on a decline before Musk bought it, but then he ran it off a cliff. Counterpoint: Twitter is now a Right Wing Echo Chamber.

If X is the answer then we’re asking the wrong questions. X isn’t what powers the right — it was decades of cultural warfare. The left lost because in the realm of intellect the right’s intellectuals turned big ideas into simple catch phrases and turned the leftists into culture-destroying demons.

Intellectual efforts on the left don’t need to be simple, they need to be understandable to the average person. Liberalism has to be cleansed of neo/cultural/economic/progressive/classical/social/modern and so forth and just be what it is, or just turn it all into one big fight for political power.

What grinds my gears is how ignorant the majority of the user base is about the actual tech stack that makes ATproto special. People don’t want to engage with the tools, they want to have ideological affirmation parties, and they’re sitting on top of a gold mine of decentralized social media

Agreed. Staying on X divides people. -and who could trust Elon w our data not to be used or turned over to Palantir and used by this admin to identify us, isolate us, punish us Ppl on the left already are independent thinking (except for blueMAGA) We need to form solidarity w each other safely

I got suspended every other day for having an opinion. On the days I didn't get suspended, I either reached no one (with 25k followers) or the only responses were from violently angry nazis. Why do any of us feel the need to sit through that? To waste time and energy to talk to a wall of nazibots?

Absolutely. X is algorithmically heavily skewed right, and likely more than 50% bots, most with right wing agendas. Left wingers posting there is just providing targets to attack.

"I'm leaving!" "You can't leave, I'm kicking you out!" "Stop talking to me!" "OH, so I'm not good enough for you and your friends anymore, is that it?" "No, you're just an asshole!" "You left your dog videos. Are you just going to abandon your dog videos?"

A lot of Bluesky discourse completely ignores the users. Most people aren't thinking "how will being here affect the relative hegemony of various platforms?" They're thinking "I want to post my weird art and talk about horror movies and not be screamed at by racists, sexists, and LGBTQ+phobes."

ZOMG so here for horror discourse Or maybe what the best resin printer is for ~$500 Or if there are any classical string players in the Boston area with the time and inclination to do I dunno, Mozart trios or something Or maybe share SteamIDs You know, I'm flexible

When I was on FaceBook, my goal was to dialogue and hopefully influence - minimal success. My goal on BlueSky is more for affirmation and spreading useful information. Because I’m a critical thinker, if I think I’m getting too comfortable in my bubble, I read articles with opposing viewpoints.

Any argument that posits that a commercial social media platform run by and for an oligarch has any validity or benefit, sort of fails the basic test for me.

I don’t live on social media or on this platform. I engage with actual people IRL and only get on BlueSky every couple of days or when I’m stuck in a waiting room like right now & have finished clearing email & reading the paper. I’m a little busy working a local campaign.

Also there's the ethical position where a person chooses not to use the product of abusive billionaires or put a single penny in their coffers. I cancelled Twitter during the time Musk was first trying to buy it. I can't believe how right I was proven.

And let's be real: the ONLY reason he bought it (using "buy, borrow, die," btw: another reason to eliminate this loophole) was to serve disinfo and propaganda for TrumPedo so that he could do what he wanted against those investigating him or forcing him to obey the laws once his bought guy was king.

My question is, why aren't more public figures on blue sky? Especially politicians. They should be on any platform they can get on to connect with constituents.

Bluesky’s algorithms aren’t that different from X. Posts from small accounts get throttled, visibility is limited, & the platform heavily favors big accounts. Most users collect followers without interacting, & for creators unless you have a very large following, it’s hard to get any exposure.

I think we chose to come to the island. I've no less influence here than when I was on FB. Was never on Twitter anyway. My head is not in the sand, just my feet.

All of this (again) implies that the right doesn't have agency. X was a Superfund site, so libs come to BlueSky, therefore BlueSky is a net negative for US politics? No, I disagree. BlueSky is a consequence of the right's hostile takeover of media for the last 40 years. *That's* the negative.

Sitting in the shit with the pigs isn't going to convince the pigs that it's better to be clean. Bigots have nothing new to say. Listening to them squeal accomplishes nothing except giving me a headache. I'm tired of pseudointellectual white men validating each other across the aisle.

⬆️This. 1000x this. Decent people staying on X wouldn’t make it any better. The site is wholly a reflection of the guy who controls the “algorithm.” There is no fixing it.

Each user must decide what's best for their own mental health. X is so toxic that I couldn't stay. I can use saner sources for right-wing perspectives if I need them.

Well credit for saying "implication" but I don't think he even implied that! He said it was a net negative for POLITICS not for Pete, Will, and Katie's mental health. What am I missing?

It's an idiotic premise — proposing that "the left" is an entity that undertook to make bsky into the anti-fascist-twitter, but failed in its effort to compete with the sieg-heil billionaire. The issue isn't that individuals of conscience found a home with bsky, but that so many with leadership...

...accountability chose to tolerate intolerance as a means of preserving their comfort. FB is demonstrably more destructive to all things democracy, yet is allowed to carry on unrestrained. And a willfully apathetic public refuses to give up their FB groups and just keep enriching...

...zuck, who's every bit the Nazi that musk is. And bezos is grotesquely worse, yet we keep pumping money into amazon. Same with paramount, spotify, apple... Yeah, so, this bsky echo chamber nonsense is an intellectual cul-de-sac, and even a counterproductive distraction.

And considering, many of those who stayed on X or underuse BSKY, have to do so, precisely because of the diagnosis. To understand what sh*tty people in power are saying/thinking, you have to use X.

And X HAS become a gleeful torture chamber full of deception. I still have friends over there, but my blood pressure rises if I even peak. Idk why X becoming a bastion of maga is a positive for them but bluesky is somehow bad for us? If nothing else, we get information & affirmation.

I also stayed to fact-check MAGA and write Community Notes. I refuse to cede Twitter to MAGA and allow it to become even more of an echo chamber for their disinformation. Those are my thoughts, for what it's worth.

I don’t know about all that sniping that you’re talking about, but I find that we’re pushing in the same direction. We all have the same wish. And that’s to be proud of our country again and not have to hang our heads and shame. Revisiting past mistakes it’s not gonna fix the future.

I agree, but there are plenty of people here who don't. I see stupid posts every day like "Good morning to everyone who voted for Kamala." That shit is divisive and unhelpful.

After a decade of trying, I have come to realize that there’s no point in arguing with chistofascist zealots. In this context, at least they are no different than some of the most dogmatic Muslims! They don’t know how to listen!

I agree with you Katie Mack, I don't like beating my head against a wall and X has become that wall. Social media in general has become a corporate income producing machine. Facebook is a joke and hasn't been relevant in 15 years. Toc Toc is going the same way. Bluesky is a refuge in the storm.

Being on twitter is a form of self abuse unless you are a white cis het male christian with the sensibility of a 12 yr boy. Bluesky has its problems but it is not the cesspool twitter is

It’s actually rather simple: I will not support with my time, my thoughts, or my money ANYTHING tainted by Elon Musk. What other social media deranged sheep choose to do staying on X is their choice.

That ugly hateful folks are allowed and even encouraged to scream and poopfling because some dented forehead idiot thinks such behaviors are funny or entertaining is our problem, ya'll. Learn how to behave decently in public so we can talk intelligently. That's what "the public" used to be for.

Twitter became unbearable. Facebook became unbearable before that. COVID was the end for me on FB. When people I grew up with started posting pictures of N95 masks with holes punched in them. Why b confronted with hate?

All social media silences anti-establishment voices. Its one of the best propaganda devices since cable news! It is true about bsky being an echo chambers of the worst liberal politics like, "vote blue no matter who."

There’s also the uncomfortable problem that staying on X basically meant being monetized by a Nazi specifically to increase the net value of that Nazi

I'm not sure I disagree with that. We aren't literally on an island (well, I'm on Java, but most people here aren't). We all still interact with people IRL. Used properly, this could be an incredible way to organize. I'm not going to agree it's a net negative without actual data.

The changes in algorhytms post-EM taking of tweets did the job long ago. Besides, TVs -not so much the internet- have the higher impact on the majority of voters. Even so, it was an obvious move, the rich had bought the TVs, then the internet when they perceived it could go out of their control.

I left Twitter when musk bought it. On principle I won't go back. Same with Zuckerberg and Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, etc.

Yes. For example, I and others like me were threatened with arrest there by someone now high up in the Trump Administration prior to the election. Didn’t take it seriously at all until both Politico and the WSJ took it seriously….But mainly the deluge of Bots and horrible folks was just terrible.

I can’t see any point in twitter since Musk bought it to push his political agenda. We can sit around here being libtards in EVs laughing at the destruction until they realize how much eggs cost now.

Yeah, I think the bigger problem is assuming that X represents “ordinary people and institutions.” To the extent that it does, it’s entirely voluntary, and X itself makes it more difficult to survive as a normie there. The reasons for remaining on such a hostile platform are diminishing quickly.

Twitter (X) is not growing; it is actually frozen, and as time passes, the quantity will drop to house the remaining population that holds the supremacy ideology. X is DJTrump's house, along with Truth Social, as he calls it.

Twitter, Bluesky etc is all a circle jerk. They are not The Public Square where great ideas are reasonably debated and intelligent discourse changes opinion. They have their purposes but reasoned productive debate … is not one of them

No? It has its uses. I am on here daily. It’s just not the thing that moves the needle. Neither is Twitter. Only about 25% of American adults use Twitter. The very online are all just talking to themselves. It’s fine. It has its uses, as I have said. I have noticed however that some people are/

Who the hell wants to hang with the crazy white supremacist morons???!? They are morons, and so, not repairable. X is a toxic retreat for all the toxic deplorables, run by the most toxic deplorable of all.

Exactly, staying to deal with the exasperation of mindless conspiracy theories and being insulted for pointing out factual information ("Yes, the Moon DOES have gravity!") simply raises my blood pressure without in the end making any difference in the abysmal quality of those platforms.

Opposition to the cult is considered an attack. They become defensive and do not hear what is said. Critical thinking is not used when fight/flight is felt. We are controlled by about 30% of the voters who drank the Kookaid. GOP can't stay in power without the cult. So they continue to serve cult!

The reality on X is that anyone Musk doesn't like will be throttled or banned, anyone he agrees with (for now) will be amplified. Anything you say will be droned out by thousands of Vuvuzelas. And Ben Stiller gets called a terrorist for talking about basketball. What's the point of staying there?

Look at X's owner. Anyone who praises and glazes over him should be rethinking about who they really should support and invest their money with. People who are on social media don't want to be bothered with white supremacy ideology, the misogyny, and hatred. X became the breeding ground for hate.

The simple fact is the fascists won the information war. They had more funding, more reach, more volume, more corrupt nation-state support, and their disinformation & propaganda is ever-present and unavoidable. We can't out-yell them or counter all their lies. They can only burn themselves out.

Also, right-wing talking points are much easier to make, shorter, and easier to get people to believe, because they're so simplistic most of them are half-truths, at best. Whereas left-wing talking points usually take longer to lay out and require just a bit of education and critical thinking.

Lets remove politics from this: This R2D2 photo posted on twitter in October 2010 had over 10,000+ Google search web links 3 DAYS AFTER POSTING ON TWITTER! A few years ago when I left Hellscape (when MUSK told us he'd crawl our content for Grok) I got NO pumpkin engagement. I get lots on Bluesky

🎯 I ran away since I wanted to follow and see posts from real people, not rashist, nazi and MAGA trolls and bots. I don't care if the Nazis, MAGAs and rashists became even more radical in their own echo chamber. They are all whackos anyway.

X is a toxic hell hole and x needs us more than we need it. I've never regretted deleting the app. The magabrains can all share their shitty views with each other, I dont need or want to be part of it.

I'm sorry but I believe very strongly that reducing "the political influence of liberals and progressives" is a very bad thing. The opposite, and to my mind mistaken, view has had far too much influence and airtime in the recent past.

100% correct take. It only appears as David & Will frame it if you assume X & BSKY are the only places progressive voices can exist, and that X is the only place where anyone can actually have influence. These are two incredibly flawed assumptions, and clear examples of confirmation bias. +

David & Will’s takes reveal how much they still hold X/twitter in high regard & will view available evidence through that lens. It’s akin to forgetting the concept of object permanence. If they’re not being fed progressive views by the algorithm, those views don’t exist, or are on a remote island.

EXACTLY!! Musk took steps to ensure left-leaning accounts were isolated anyway, and if anyone shouted TOO LOUDLY and got TOO VOCAL and managed to “break through” the algorithms, he just suspended their accounts. I don’t regret leaving that fucking hell-hole for an instant.

well, what shall I say:15yrs on twitter brought me not even 300followers,then they just closed my account because of palestine. now at bsky after1year of work, they labeled me "spam", so from my posts had been read immediatly by lots of people it went to 2 or so,+even I myself scroll them accidently.

(This, of course, assumes that one CAN "influence" Republicans. If the Civil Rights Act didn't stop them from racism and the Constitution didn't stop them electing an insurrectionist bribe-taker, pretty sure Nazi Musk's disinfo platform is NOT the cure for Republican cult evils...)

I guess it’s only okay for the rabid right to be in a “fish bowl”. I got off X bc I refused to support musk’s takeover of that platform and also bc life’s too short to spend my time reading ignorant comments from people who prefer fiction over facts. It’s a waste of time and energy.

Hey, it's 3 AM and you're still out in the backyard arguing with drunk uncle who doesn't give a shit about facts or reason and just needs someone to blame and hate for his own useless disgusting life. WTFIYP? Shut up, the rest of us need to get some sleep.

This is correct but far too many political commenters decided long ago to never blame the Right (and aligned bad-faith actors ) for their actions when you can bitch about Democrats and the greater left instead We should play a new game: judge everyone on their actions instead of what they didn't do

I don’t think Bluesky being a net negative follows unless volts’ intention is to imply that If staying on x would have been the same or worse then blue sky is at least neutral or even positive compared to the counterfactual even if it’s worse than before

maybe you aren't communicating well? or maybe the issue is that this is all speculative navel-gazing? you provide no data to support your claims - it's all "the cause is mostly..." and so forth. engagement bait? clarify: how would the USA be different now if we'd all stayed on X? SPECIFICS, ty

Is watching CNN NewsNight better with Scott Jennings? If you answer yes, what does that say about you? Social media isn’t my life. I use it get info & to be entertained. I don’t need to be challenged or trolled just because I like a sports, pet, music, movie or science post, which happens on X.

I think it’s natural to read that claim when someone specifically calls the lifeboat “a net negative” instead of using that label for the iceberg

...also who "took" all the progressives & put them anywhere? Nobody wanted to swim in shark-chummed waters, to add to the chum. All the argument was driving an algo-twisted hate engine. I just didn't want add to the N*zi training data set, & 4 mental health avoid seeing racism as the "top comment".

argh. He did not call it a "net negative," period. There are more words in the sentence! Also, do you think that Dave would disagree with the sentence "Elon's Twitter has also been a net negative for US politics"? I say he would. In fact I would bet a substantial amount of money that he would!

Yeah, it seems weird because the option besides Bluesky for people who don't want to constantly read racist screeds isn't "go back to pre-2022 twitter", it's mainly "stop going on text-based social media".

There’s more to life than politics. I say this as a bleeding heart, tree hugging liberal, who was a registered Democrat for almost 50 years until last year when she became an independent because the Democrats weren’t liberal enough for her.

In Bluesky I can find the other things that interest me. If that means I’ve been corralled into some sort of left leaning fishbowl, I’m OK with that. Because I can’t even change the minds of my Trump support supporting acquaintances, so I sure won’t change the mind of any rightwing politician.

It’s definitely not calling Bluesky the problem. It’s calling the overall media landscape that has resulted in this situation the problem. More lamenting the lack of a broader exodus from X than anything

"Corralled" at BluSky (are you corralled at StarBucks if you happen to like to have coffee there)? Another false assumption is that interacting on X involves political conversation in the sense of normally intelligent citizens of character exploring views (X is more a festival of misfits generally).

I don't think you have to implore people to post on Twitter to notice that liberal discourse has been effectively kettled into Bluesky, diminishing its influence. It's easy to ignore that right now because of the unpopularity of Trump, but it matters.

This gets back to the problem of the X/Twitter algorithm changes. Would all of us posting on X even have an impact, given the weight of Elon's thumb on the scale? Not sure the answer is yes.

Probably would have an impact, but not enough to matter and then you're a captured audience, which has its own problems. It's possible for all options to be bad ones.

Oh agreed, there were no good options, which might be why this is such a constant and heated topic of discourse; people really, really don't like the idea that there wasn't some secret strategy to achieve good outcomes, regardless of circumstances.

I think the issue is where the causal factor should be placed here. Its true that us being here instead of holistically part of the social ethos in the pre-Musk twitter is worse. But it does not follow that we could recreate that dynamic by not being here given the negative design choices on X.

I think understand what's happened, which I don't think everyone does, is valuable unto itself as it at least orients you towards the need to fix it. The far right in the same spot were monomaniacal about finding strategies to combat it until they landed on one that worked.

The larger negative effect of social media in the hands of radical right wing billionaires is the elephant in the room of this Bluesky discussion. The reason why it’s not that helpful to ID that problem is because we assume it’s unchangeable.

So much of this lands on the failures of the institutional Democratic Party. Fox thrived cuz GOP went there, lied a lot, and made news there. We can't even get elected Dems to post here. The environment here is optimal for the messaging we all want built but the Party & donor class refuse to help.

There really isn't even a coordinated effort to exert a pull on Twitter users to leave among gettable allies. Getting liberal friendly-organizations not to communicate through Twitter is pulling teeth.

it went downhill when they changed the algo so you couldn't see anyone you follow posting, then when they blocked tweet deck and put ads into your feed so you saw more ads and recommended posts then people you follow. THEN the x takeover

Absolutely agree with that. My firsthand observation (as an exclusively Bluesky user since 2025) is that Bluesky fucks around with its algorithm in such a way as to limit engagement between people with divergent opinions. I don’t see where that does anything helpful for SM in general.

I dunno, I still get the occasional RepubliCult 🐑/bot (I just don't waste time arguing with morons or cultists, so after 2 exchanges I mute or block them. Did one earlier today, in fact.)

Nobody corralled me. I left Twitter two years ago because Elon turned it into a right-wing toxic waste site. I don’t have time or room in my life for all that bullshit. I blocked FAUX News in my house. Others can tolerate the propaganda or remain as aloof observers. I cannot & will not participate.

It’s not a binary choice. Plenty of people who post here are doing stuff in the real world. This is where to get the word out about protests. This is why it’s so weird that someone would call it a net negative for politics.

Facebook has become a trash platform too. I've been on it for some time and am starting to seriously consider bailing on it. It's a swamp half filled with conspiracy theories like chemtrails and Moon landing denial, and another quarter filled with arrogant MAGA posts.

Platform dominance is concentrated among a few major giants, with Facebook leading at 3.07B following by Instagram and WhatsApp, both at 3B, while YouTube reaches 2.58B, and TikTok captures 1.9B. Meta controls the top three platforms. This is the playing field for progressives.

Exactly! I got tired of the Venom that was spewed at me on a daily basis and when Muskrat would get butt hurt and threaten to suspend me I finally quit and told him to take X and the Trump train he rode it on and shove it. When he took over, our voices were nullified.

I find Bluesky a lot like James Randi's TAM. The people there have various backgrounds and expertise, and each brings something interesting to the mix, but some common threads: Everyone is reality-based, has good critical-thinking skills, and has a good bs detector. X is like chess with pigeons.

Exactly this. They will always attempt to "fishbowl" us no matter where we go, because the billionaires own&run the media/platforms. We absoluteky need to speak with/reach more peopke, but the means to do so will not be handed to us on a silver platter.

Truth² X formerly known as Twitter is lost and there progressives are just hounded and harassed. X is full of racists, fascists, bots of all hostile states and organisations and they are harvesting your data. In X,Libs get herded into a pen as defined by the algorithm readied for slaughter/butchery

I ended my twitter/X experience. I can debate policy, actions and opinions but they need to be fact based. X took a nosedive straight down the shitter. Musk took it there for trump.
