It's hard to avoid the conclusion that Bluesky has been a net negative for US politics. They corralled everyone on the left into a little glass fishbowl where they shout at one another & everyone else ignores them. Meanwhile, all the pols & institutions stayed on X & are being dragged farther right.

well, you do seem to be making the assumption that the Bsky audience could have controlled the pull of X to the right, which would make X less culpable for its own damage than an explanation that assumes the opposite

What if Bluesky is not a public square for debate and persuasion, or a billionaire’s pet epistemic bubble, but a tool to organize and energize a political base?

So, what's your point?!? Doesn't make any sense stay there just because the others are. There's a plenty politicians here, maybe is not the kind of politicians that you wanna...

Very telling that you think otherwise. Saying that Bluesky corralled everyone on the left into a fishbowl implies that you view their agency negatively. When the left uses any agency, the critics comes out in droves.

Buddy that is what it intrinsically is! You are wholly absolving any one of the moral turpitude of remaining on X! It is only telling in the sense that reality itself is telling you they are right in their assessment.

That is deranged. You're literally just making that up. I think the people & institutions who chose to stay on X deserve enormous disapprobation. The whole problem I'm describing is that *not enough people left*.

I don’t interpret it as that. I like bluesky because it’s not a racist cesspool. Good enough for me. Those on X being dragged further right…that’s their problem, not ours.

Just once I’d like to see an article or post about how much it sucks that Elon took over a beloved social media site and turned it into what it is, instead of more posts about “Bluesky users bad” for not wanting to participate

All right, well, it seems I did not communicate my point very effectively! I doubt anyone involved in this goofy pile-on cares what I really think, but, just for the sake of posterity, let me clarify a few points.

I did not say, and do not think: 1) That X is "better" than Bsky. 2) That anyone should feel the slightest obligation to return to X, or indeed to engage with any social media in any way other than whatever makes them happy. 3) That it is Bsky's "fault" that X sucks or that people left it.

1) none issue. No one ever interpreted that 2) quite literally no one feels any such obligation. It is absurd for you to suggest people interpreted you to suggest that because the suggestion itself is beyond the pale.

What happened was, Musk bought X & started pushing it in a nazi direction. This prompted a semi-mass exodus (including me). But the exodus basically petered out. To my dismay -- & to their eternal discredit -- lots & lots of prominent people, journos, institutions, experts, brands, etc. stayed.

You stepped into a space and said it (and by association every in it) is a net negative for society. Why did you not expect a pile-on? this was my very first thought

No, you made your point quite effectively. It just didn’t land as you’d hoped it would because folks can read through your passive-aggressive guilt-trip. Quit gaslighting and own it.

At long last, you found the truth-- "...it seems I did not communicate my point very effectively!" X doesn't suck because of Bluesky, Threads, Discord, Substack, etc. It sucks because of Musk & his love of Nazis & the RWNJs of the GOP. Don't make this harder than it is.

The lack of self-awareness is amazing. The universal feedback you’re getting is “goofy” but you’re unwilling to actually listen to the feedback your getting and bc people disagree w you on BlueSky we’re a “net negative”

Thank you for making this admission, rather than continuing to question the reading comprehension of the people responding to you as you did in your first response. That's actually a big deal.

I tried to make this same point like two years ago and it was basically the origin story of the left’s extreme hatred for me on this site and made me the most blocked person on the site during a several day stretch. Explaining won’t work

This is not true. There is no “extreme hatred” for Stancil. There are just a lot of people who think that he’s very silly for regularly trolling his own readers and then pretending that he can’t figure out why people get upset.

Right, I think the blunt “Bsky is a net negative” probably isn’t a clear summary of your elaborated points further down this thread The Twitter/X/Bsky ecosystem is much worse on the whole *today* than it was in 2018 when it was just everyone on Twitter, no question

Either you communicated so poorly you need to seriously readjust your entire approach going forward, or you're backpeddling. If you're being honest, you made your point so poorly that you look like you're backpeddling now.

Yeah, the only "engagement" I got from X was from from unsolicited sex and crypto bots. It was essentially dead unless you helped promote Elon's views.

100000% this. unless we were willing to pay for blue checks and avoid talking about what we wanted to talk about, nobody was gonna move the needle we wanted to move

I think it's a big problem for the other place to be honest. They need the opposition so they can keep the arguments going. Now 'the opposition' is mainly bots. Bots arguing with bots isn't a great business model.

agree with this. i don't think people on the left staying on X wouldn't have done anything to stem the shift right. we were basically forced to find somewhere new to talk about our politics.

The algo in X became where lefties and most everyone was howling at the sky where here it seems that we can talk (and scream if necessary to vent) to one another in a somewhat respectful manner. Though bluesky has started to suppress information, free speech and accounts

This is my take also, though admittedly there's some daylight between the left broadly construed and the trans community specifically. I maintained an Assigned Media Twitter presence for a while despite having a growing Bluesky account. I stopped bothering only bc there was no traction.

They are doing this because the thing you describe would have happened if all of us simply left the internet instead of moving to Bluesky. The negative consequences are the result of us vacating X, not anything we do here. So what you're saying here basically amounts to "leaving X was a mistake."

And may overstate the impact of X. Many conversations surrounding where the country is going (or should be going) are happening offline/out-of-view, and (for better & for worse) are decoupling from Overton-windowed elements of the media...

Well, in general at least I take it we're thinking that BS has corralled lib-left influencers in one place but also cut them off from political/cultural influence/impact. I worry abt that, think that too. But I also think we may understate its impact in those ways. I'm not sure. So not giving ...

If BlueSky is able to influence democratic politics in 2029+, this could all look really different in hindsight. But IDK how any of this plays among staffers today, if at all.

On my end, to jump off the final part of Josh's post: it's helped media (Bolts, IK others) find a wider audience & more traffic (and with that also comes stability & supporters) — while continuing to do all the other things we do to find audiences beyond this contained space (partners, emails, etc).

I wouldn't know about Bolts if not for Bluesky, and you (along with @charlesgaba.com) have been immensely helpful for me in directing my resources in down ballot races. Thanks for what you do. This is a good reminder for me to donate.

As an independent voter that's voted for Republicans as recently as the last election, you're partially correct. Bluesky is a little too lefty for me sometimes. But the alternative is engaging with a slanted towards fascism and racism algo on Twitter. People there are terrible. This is better

FWIW, I think the assertion you made is just factually incorrect. Twitter/X would have merely muted all of those people, and some large percentage of them would have been dragged right.

It’s fundamentally deeply naive. Elon Musk is literally a genocidal maniac with zero compunction about silencing people who disagree with him. It is delusional to believe any voice he disapproves of could find true traction or gain real power on his website.

I don't even mind it, really, if it's somewhat diluted by other stuff. It's just the uniformity & relentlessness of it around here...

While I think this is true to some extent, it is an exaggeration to say that Musk would or is capable of completely muting all those voices. He definitely tilted the algorithm, but there are plenty of big lib accounts still on there. If he'd *completely* wiped them out, X would have died.

It is. If you ignore the systemic changes at twitter to make it actively hostile to any opinion left of Hitler and pretend we'd be heard if we just stayed there then yes, you are defending it.

That's on you? Framing maters. Bluesky didn't cause any of that. Elon buying Twitter and tweaking reach of anyone without insane politics did. Bluesky doesn't do what Twitter did for us, but post-Twitter that wasn't an option. "Bluesky bad. Twitter was better" means you deserve your flack.

I'm positive you're a better writer then I am. So, you know, take your lumps. Slanted framing, whether reflexive engagement baiting or whatever, is stupid. It's toxic. It's helped kill the news and that's really fucked things up. Cut it out. Tone influences as much as content.

I think a big reason is how you failed to mention the myriad ways Musk has put his thumb on the scales. Plenty of the left is still on Twitter, but the algorithm minimizes their exposure while at the same time boosting right wing slop. That's going on regardless of what happens over here.

I don't think he worded it poorly, I think he has a very dumb opinion and he laid it out perfectly well. It hinges on the idea that it's bluesky's fault that people left twitter, which is so stupid that everyone assumes he misspoke lol

Hiya David, The mere fact that people attack you for stating the simple truth is a great social truth about the liberal mind and why it keeps losing. Instead of being able to see the validity of your statements, they see red. That speaks volumes about how closed-minded they are. Liberal, hmmmmmmmm?

Meh I think X is over-rated in its impact as well as Bluesky. For the small groups that use both it makes sense that they have their own forums for debates. It is a niche thing and the impact of Twitter from 10 years ago will never come back...

The confusion may lie in the framing of ”Bluesky“ as the net negative rather than the musk takeover. If we’d be in the same boat getting suppressed on twitter and dealing with trolls, then the Bluesky exodus isn’t really the cause, just the symptom.

Right? What were we supposed to do? Stay on the Nazi site? I tried for a few months and it just wasn't tenable. Sorry my mental health has improved significantly since I left, I guess

Yeah I mean, I don't think that's what he meant, he's just conflating "Bluesky" with "the slide toward fascism of other social media that drove users in search of newer platforms and resulted in Bluesky becoming largely populated by people who watched their last site become a Nazi bar"

Very telling: your unresponsiveness to climate scientist Katherine Hayhoe's in-depth, data-supported, thorough explanation as to why staying on X and hoping that the increasing algorithmic marginalization of reality-based content would not continue to erode its utility, was a sucker's bet.

Yeah, well bud maybe if people didn’t get shit on constantly when they do try to come to our defense it might not feel so damn lonely. I see and experience it far too often to treat it like it isn’t a major part of the problem. People have their own shit to deal with too.

Doesn’t this just fall into the narrative category of “whenever the right does something bad and the left reacts to it, any bad outcome is the left’s fault”? Just replace right/left with X/Bluesky. Wouldn’t it make more sense to just say “X (in particular, Elon buying it) has been a net negative”?

Perfectly happy for people to disagree with what I said. Not so great when so many people are disagreeing with invented positions that they are projecting onto the post.

I think you are either inventing their position or you haven’t critically looked at your own framing. Is Bluesky’s existence the problem? Or the manipulation of Twitter that drove much of the left off of it? Or even the fact that many institutions refuse to leave Twitter despite its issues?

No, we're pointing out that your premise is a complete lie; you must not understand how research works. "All the pols and institutions" did not stay on X, and there is no engagement on X between any credible users of X and what "pols and institutions" remain. Go enjoy the bots and racists though.

I didn't take it as a defense of X but if Elon is manipulating what we see, for example, even though I never followed Elon I would be forced to see many posts today saying "Elon saved Truth by buying X" if I was on there. I checked. I don't see the value in having to see what Elon wants me to see.

I was suspended for 7 days from X several times after Elon got it, the final time that made me leave was when I just posted that Trump had told people to inject bleach to fight covid. My post was flagged as violent. Yet bots & MAGA could post actually violent things to me with no repercussions.

I think people are interpreting it as a defense of X because you’ve got the equation wrong. Like, it’s not the exodus to BlueSky that was a net negative to politics. It was a billionaire buying up the largest social media site with the explicit intent of turning it into his propaganda outlet.

Like, we’re all on BlueSky because we were all being artificially suppressed, and artificially fed Elon’s right wing views whether we wanted to or not.

Really? Just seems like a shit-take, to me! Communing with nazis is no fun, and liberals have always had better things to do than agree with each other I think ultimately it's a great place to organize marches and other events without the attendant right wing trolling But, to each his own!

Maybe it's not a defense but what your framing very definitely does is treat X as inevitable, like it's an inescapable physical law of the universe and the rest of us just have to adapt. That's uhh… putting some unreasonable pressure on the people reading your posts, let's say. Doesn't feel great.

Does it treat right-wing capture of a social media site as inevitable? Or does it treat the power imbalance between posters and the very rich and very right-wing guy who runs the site to promote his right-wing beliefs as not something that an individual poster or even reasonable collective action

I think Roberts may have a point here; we self-segregated, albeit for heavily justifiable reasons, but the inevitable result is the right wing nature of the site’s tenor accelerated both because of the astroturfing and by no longer having us to argue against it. There’s still left wing voices…

The suggestion that progressives somehow left the field of battle elevates X to something that it no longer is nor has been for some time. It’s not the ‘global digital town square’ no matter how much Musk wants to pretend it is, it’s now very much the Nazi bar.

…there but they’re far more heavily isolated and It isn’t that Twitter was inevitable, but I think what is is that if a mass of leftists leave a social space, that de facto radicalizes it towards the right wing because it’s a social space, it *is* a societal organ, and left voices are no longer…

I feel like Bluesky in its current form is a consequence of what happened to Twitter, which is the actual net negative for US politics. If Bluesky didn't exist a lot of the left would still have abandoned Twitter, and those that stayed would be systematically squashed by the algo anyway

This sums it up, and I agree My gripes: 1) Any strategy that deviates from traditional LW orthodoxy should be shouted down (trains/bikes are the answer to everything, suburbs=evil) 2) Thinking about gender-specific messaging carefully means you're prob a Nazi who should be blocked

keep things in perspective, the algorithms and bots on X have created a self-sustaining ecosystem, but it looks like this - this isn't a long-term formula for anything:

with all due respect, I don't think we couldn't avoid moving, purely because the algorithm started being heavily stacked against us bsky.app/profile/davi...

David Frum@davidfrum.bsky.social

Study linked on Twitter/X : approximately mid-July, the algorithm was modified to subject users to more pro-Trump content whether they sought it or not. Link to the study eprints.qut.edu.au/253211/

It fascinates me to this day how the Left couldn't handle the arrival of the Right on X. How they were only happy when they had complete dominance of the platform. The difference between here and there is, the Right would mostly welcome the Left there.

That doesn't seem to be borne out. Once maybe, where the Right was all about "deviancy". But now it's the Left pushing the speech codes, claiming to be triggered, and decreeing "words are violence". You'll find individual cases on all sides, but it's the Left that makes sensitivity virtue.

Absolutely right and predictable. I have watched the Left fall off a cliff, unable to discuss, debate, or understand the "other". Until progressives recognise how unhinged and extreme they have become themselves, and how much of an echo-chamber they have created, they will remain a lost cause.

B.S., democrats would be foolish to continue to engage the right wing as they work to deny us our right to vote in real time. FOX has been an island for three decades. Spare us your crocodile tears. This country has changed. 🍑

So we should stay on a platform that promotes and encourages actual fucking nazis and csam peddlers? Where already marginalized people are actively getting harmed, threatened, and harassed? No. Fuck that. If you don't like BlueSky, go create something better. Don't ask people to be further harmed.

It's true, as people say, that Musk can tweak the algorithm to skew things right. But it is also true, as you say, that some amount of pushback & resistance was better than none.

thing is, they want the pushback. its a common recruitment technique. its why both scientology, and Jehovah's witnesses, go hard into teaching debate. they like nothing better than to start arguments. heavy blocking is why the bot and troll foothold is bad but isn't anywhere near as bad as twitter.

same reason that Elon never takes action against people that use grok to make memes attacking him, even vile ones. it helps normalize the tech. "its useful/right in this instance, maybe its not so bad".

Not really, it's the one place people can find a critical mass of folks for organizing and supporting independent media. If we were left with X, we would only be further disempowered. I've been able to get much more attention to worthy research than I ever got on twitter.

Yup. I'm here because I like interacting with the people here and don't want to be on the Nazi site. The folks who want to influence politics are welcome to post on the Nazi site. I'm happy with my choice not to.

Dude The corral is to test AI brain control and psychohistorical manipulation (vote newsom!) And that is largely failing as people just use the website for their own used and label the bots and move on And none of it is some grand conspiracy

Don't know Bluesky's impact on US politics, but for many of us, it's all about the fun of collectively smarter by exchanging articles and ideas, no harm there. Me and my Bluesky peeps are all super polite, so I don't really understand the concerns about "shouting." Or "corralling" for that matter.

People don’t want to hang out in a place where every time you say something reasonable, you’ve got 100 Nazis screaming obscenities & threatening you. Call us weak or whatever but folks need to be able to make it through the day without wanting to shoot themselves and who can blame anyone for that?

My mental health has improved considerably. And I doubt I was convincing anyone to go further left. I hear Threads is more of what Twitter once was but I'm tired and just want to get my news without my blood pressure boiling.

Who says X is being pulled further right. Is LEON telling you that. At least here, there are replies, and replies to replies, not just likes.

To expect social media to be anything more than a reflection of its members is thinking that social media is something it isn't. Every 'society', even online, is merely a mirror, and 'like' will always attract 'like' in the human mind.

Who exactly do you mean by “everyone else”? Certainly not political and business elites across most of the world, almost all of whom clearly are very interested in what is being discussed here. There is basically nothing politically relevant going on at X at all. It’s all here or Truth Social.

I have several burner accounts on Twitter that follow no one, and the amount of progressive tweets I see in For You when I check on them have surprised me Even on Twitter, the conservatives are still a minority I think, particularly in engagement/likes I don't know if that means anything

If someone is getting dragged farther right because they stayed on X its because X panders to their confirmation bias. More 'Libs' staying were never going to to convince someone to not be racist, sexist, homophobic or whatever ails them. Not when they're fighting against The Algorithm.

I’m open to this conclusion but what’s the evidence that this is the case as opposed to just X algorithms and it being bought by a Nazi being the problem? The rightward drift was happening far before Bluesky’s creation.

I think the biggest net negative for US politics is the marked drop in quality and loss of trust in previously respected media outlets. The fact that WaPo, CNN, CBS, and the NYT are all shells of their past competence is a far bigger problem then the people here pointing that out, IMO 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm 70. Growing up, TV was ABC, NBC, CBS. TV 6-7pm was only news, local or national. Newspapers were a local paper and NYT (where we lived). EVERYBODY in the community had that same baseline info. So different now, it's so fragmented.

It makes zero sense for a normie Dem like me to stay on X vs Bluesky. I’m not going to pay $8/mo and i didn’t have a ton of followers, so my tweets/replies were basically invisible there. At least I get a chance to be in the convo on BS… plus, way less Nazis

This implies that there is a known and definitive causal relation between the two, which seems difficult to prove. I could say that the advent of mRNA vaccines have been a net negative on US Politics. Net against what though?

Very clearly stated and sounds accurate to me. The only thing I’d add is much of this is the result of what I believe is true based on my experience and many people still don’t appreciate - a lot of people in this country are just really horrible people. Not always on the surface, but they are.

The real Q is how to get people to leave the rancid nazi site - pols & media &cultural establishment, but also those reporting from Palestine or from Israel critically or other politically important reports, and the remnants eg of neuroscience twitter (which mostly (?) moved). The fact that 1/

establishment types stay is a more fundamental problem with them, they normalize Trump, do false equivalence on D's & R's, and just are blind to the problem. But if other communities they read could be induced to leave ... perhaps would affect them too. Dunno, hope is not a plan; but could there 2/

be some kind of concerted effort to make clear to the various groups how nazi X is, how awful what they're supporting is, and they have to reject this being the town square. Bluesky in principle is not left, it's just not owned by anyone and make-yr-own-algorithm. It's defined by whoever moves 3/

here. It's in principle the rt place for a town square. But if they can't get that, they could at least perhaps see that X is the wrong place? All this is probably empty talk ... but wondering if anyone can see how to make it real? Like the quitgpt movement ...

Did it ever occur to you that the reason that happened is because the other formats are A) owned by far right oligarchs who repress speech and B) actively use algos that repress speech they do not like? Come on, think it through.

they don't ignore Bluesky though there's like fifty news cycles a month obsessing over what people at bluesky are saying. replete with hand-wringing, ironically, about whether they're appropriately well rounded

Yeah, lots of shares of literal screen shots, but also some of the thought cycles that start here move into what i call 'media amplifiers', which can be one person, a company, an automated aggregator, but you notice rumination here coming out bigger later almost verbatim. Also LLM feed here.

I seems like it’s just mostly poking fun at what’s going on here. There’s even a meme on X where someone asks “What’s the mood on BlueSky?” when some big news story breaks and the X users share screenshots of BlueSky users crashing out in the replies.

I have never seen an article that even references BlueSky much less characterizes what’s going on here. I think the OP complaint is one that used to crop up on Twitter: paid writers resent when unpaid writers compete with them for followers and engagement. So they curse the entire enterprise.

By blocking those that think differently than you, you are creating an echo chamber. We should all keep an open mind and look at the big picture. We're missing a lot of information if we are in a bubble.

oh yeah they are absolutely kicking and screaming about it. noooo dont turn me into a rightoid noooo *ulp* My Name IS Grand Wizard Bellamy CEO of Poison Your Family

What you surely meant to say: "*X* has been a net negative for *global* politics" That millions of people have managed to escape and are largely doing pretty well here having normal conversations without the far right poisoning everything is a *good thing*!

Part of the problem with Twitter/X is that feeds that say negative things about the current administration are quashed. Twitter/X has devolved into a far right echo chamber.

i agree with this effect in principle, but is the blue sky userbase... really that significant? did most liberals leave twitter for bsky, or did they just leave twitter in general?

I don’t know if an app of 40 million global users has that big of an effect, especially since many who post here still post there too. Even if everyone stayed, the algorithm pull to the right most likely would have ended the same, if not even more people drift conservative if they didn’t leave app

Looking at what is happening to the “left” who remained on X is a good example of that. Not everyone who is left wing or center left X to “the fishbowl”

I would measure it instead by whether BlueSky is driving disproportionate engagement relative to its size. This in terms of donations, links, stories disseminated. I think it has just by virtue of not having an algo that stifles political content or links, but the last data I saw on this was old

Bluesky just happened to exist as an option when all of us non-Nazis wanted to leave the Nazi platform. We would have left even if there was nowhere to go*. The problem here is pols/journalists/institutions who have no problem continuing to legitimize a Nazi platform. *Threads erasure intentional

And I for do not feel beholden to anybody to make sure the "social" media site that feeds me distractions is anything other than that.

basically: "i, a smol bean, stayed on the nazi site far too long and part of my fragmented audience holds that against me. But it's Bluesky's fault" classic pundit brain

X under Musk was definitively and measurably burying liberal voices. The algorithm made sure they had no reach and were not being heard. Many, many examples. Agree with your observation that X is tracking rightward, but that is the owner's explicit goal and likely little different without bluesky.

It's a net negative for Dem/Progressive politics in general. The echo chamber here is insane and we all take part in it. The result is people getting worked into an absolute lather about what they think good policy should be and meanwhile most of the electorate is well to the right of this platform

Respectfully disagree. If one had a cogent thought/proposal/argument to offer up for discussion on X, it is mostly met with, "poo poo pee pee" or "yo mama". There is little value there. Better to use this "fish bowl" to advocate for coalition.

Not being deported a million times and getting these? I have the same problem with facebook, people don’t like our content should just leave. I can’t understand why they need to rock the boat any more than from their leader!

Same. It was exhausting hearing “trumps only sin is some mean tweets” over and over. I quit all social media besides here. It was depressing to see how many people I went to school with supported Trump. I don’t miss them at all.

Usually agree with you on most things but I think this is wrong. This supposed that musk wasn’t going to radically ratchet down visibility of progressive posts (a thing he did). In that world, you get to be a legitimizing audience for Nazi discourse, not a counterweight

The lack of support for Bluesky from the institutional Democratic party is criminal. It highlights the Party's refusal to invest in any meaningful media strategy on than playing on the reactionary centrist or right wing turf. If elected Dems primarily used Bsky, the institutional press would follow.

I see posts from Dem politicians on here all the time. Not sure why you're not seeing them. Not all politicians are on here but that's fine. I don't want my politicians dancing, singing & posting stupid memes for 12 yr old mindsets. I want them working to fix the USA.

I posted this about 2 weeks ago. #BlueSky was mentioned on a Netflix show rather than X. Maybe it's progress that BlueSky will eventually be more successful than X? bsky.app/profile/lady...

LadyPup@ladypup.bsky.social

#BlueSky was mentioned on the @netflix.com show #RunningPoint instead of the usual Twitter (X). Hopefully this is a change in the worldwide movie lexicon from a Nazi run website to a place where free speech still exists.

That must be why the Republicans are performing so well in every election we’ve had recently. Or maybe both X and Bluesky are both just mostly meaningless ways of killing time

It’s wild that any people think institutional changes come because progressives or conservatives were yelling at the WSJ on social media and not because of institutional capture by self-interested Billionaires.

“Get in the Amazon Wage Cage and keep impotently yelling at a multi-billion dollar institution who only answers to its owners desires on the website run by a different billionaire who has openly throttled competing viewpoints. Nooooo, don’t find an online space you enjoy, stay in the torture nexus.”

I think being leftist has been a net negative regardless of site. And I agree that has been a net negative for US politics, but I don’t think Bluesky has much to do with it.

The problem is that so many bigger organizations still hang on to that platform because they don't want to lose their following. Digging your feet into the ground in the hopes that the old Twitter comes back is a fools errand. It's dead, if you're not an Elon fanboy get out of there

Bluesky doesnt have advertising, promoted tweets, or pay to play. And it’s not run by an asshat. Those are more than enough reasons for me to have switched to Bluesky. NO social media platforms affect US politics. Anyone who says otherwise is just yelling in to the wind.

100%. As a newcomer to social media, and never on any other, Bluesky gives me a place to vent. In real time.In the past I would write letters to the editor in the local papers. Not what is needed now.Letters to the editor are too slow to post, and reach a small audience. The venting here helps us all.

Yes, but that too is what’s wrong with social media- it’s become everyone’s megaphone, and all that noise collectively drowns out the voices that are actually tying to effect change. As designed, if you ask me.

Talk back radio and television do exactly the same and have for years. Seeing, reading, and hearing that people, lots of people, feel the same gives us hope and strength. Participating is a start. Voting is about the only thing that will effect change.

The voices that are actually trying to effect change are louder voices. I think most smaller voices on Bluesky realize that. The small voices do follow the louder voices, I know I do, and the small voices try to amplify the louder voices, not drown them out. We create our own algorithm..

This just doesn't comport with reality, man. You have Nate Silver Syndrome where you have a ludicrously outsized idea of how much social media reflects society

This presupposes liberals staying on X would result in productive political conversations. The liberals and the left moving to BlueSky isn't the rupture. BlueSky is the refuge we all sought when the environment we existed in turned to shit. Institutions choosing to stay and wallow in it isn't the

fault of progressives. Leaving X was the natural result of a degraded environment. Leaving X didn't cause the degraded environment, it was simply an acknowledgement of what it had become. Folks need to stop lamenting liberals doing the right thing because the worst people among us choose not to.

People didn't leave the other platform because of politics. They left because it was damaging to stay. Bluesky gave me back hours of my day that had been taken from me by people I didn't need to be engaging with or, frankly, know about. I feel better because I breathe easier without the many trolls.

If you’re capable of being dragged to the right in this climate, you were always a wolf in sheep’s clothing. If you are on X in this climate, knowing what Elon Musk is & how X enables his agenda, you should probably shoot yourself into the sun.

That you equate someone on, or moving, to the Right with a "wolf in sheep's clothing" says a lot. We all want the same things, just differ on the best approach. e.g the left thinks we should focus on minority groups, the right believes the individual is the smallest minority. So policy differs.

If the individual is the concern of the right why are the fundamentals of individual bodily autonomy (reproductive rights, the right to express your gender, the right to survive without becoming an indentured servant of one or another large corporation) being fought for only by the left?

On reproductive rights, it is the individual with the least voice they champion: the child. Likewise, they have no issue with you being any gender you want, just don't demand other individuals play along, or push it on minors. Slave? What about an individual _wanting_ to work with lesser conditions?

Shooting something outside the solar system requires less delta v than shooting it into the sun. We cannot be top class haters if we're wasteful with propellant!

1. You propose a false dichotomy; there is one world and one set of facts, and people use facts no matter where learned. 2. People do other stuff than pay attention to sources they no longer trust, but being on Bluesky does not make one ignorant of the environment. 3. This bastion is a motivator.

Having liberal media that is large enough to rival the massive Right Wing media/SMedia might get institutions/pols to listen to liberals. But who wd finance it? Air America was so gd its key ppl are still famous. But it was in financial trouble its whole short life upine.medium.com/time-to-solv...

upine.medium.comTime to Solve Our Propaganda Problems like the Military DoesA large percentage of our nation’s voters are immersed in Right Wing propaganda. What’s the solution? We should

It has also helped the libs here stay sane. That in itself is a net positive. I can't say how much leaving Shitter eased my mind mentally. Engagement levels were shit anyway on Twitter. It was troll heaven...

"They corralled everyone on the left into a little glass fishbowl where they shout at one another & everyone else ignores them." Way too reductive--this is the narrative that X users have about this place.

This is a good point. I didn’t leave X for any reason other than I don’t want to support Elon. I just want to fuck around and talk sports, occasionally vent about politics, and chat with other Philly people. I’m not trying to change minds or fight the good fight.

Truly, it's best to create resistance and a movement that's not being monitored by the feds, Palantir, etc. And I think a lot of people on the "left" are just better overall at looking out for their mental health. We're busy touching grass.

Could it be that Xitter's incentive strategy changed to drag (yank) things farther right and that's why "everyone" on the left left? And for the pols and institutions that stayed, well, maybe they didn't need a whole lot of dragging. Panem et circenses, digital style.

I mean, that was Elon's purpose for buying Twitter, to deprive anyone on the left a civilized platform. Solution: pressure the pols, civic agencies, corporations, journalists, celebs & other institutions to leave Der Stürmer

The primary difference is that X’s algorithm pushes you in one direction or another. The platform drives you to greater and greater levels of kooky. Whereas, on the butterfly, you’re choosing your own level of kook.

I'm not going to X. Using X means giving Elon money. I'm just not going to do that. What about threads? Is it a net negative that people left X to go to threads?

Yeah, like usual, everything is the fault of folks on the left. I'm so sorry for leaving the Nazi bar/CSAM generator to become a "net negative for US politics."

The average IQ on X is about 75% lower than on Bluesky. I'm never going back to that hellhole of Nazi dumbfuckery. Even most Leftist on there are clowns.

Bluesky has not had any meaningful impact on US politics one way or the other. The only reason Twitter has any impact, is because everyone in the beltway has developed chronically online Twitter brain, where they think Twitter opinions represent reality.

Oralè David X selective routine shadow account and daily proof of life it’s not very welcoming either It’s depressing, I only have 21k and the blue account post same thing and nothing happens, not mentioned big blue account don’t repost our stuff either! If we didn’t engage we promote they don’t

I really dgaf. The last month I was on X, it had become so vile and toxic, it was unbearable. And then Elon took away the block function and that was the last straw. There’s a notion that X users are just trying to have good faith discussions and they’re not. Says more about ppl choosing to stay tbh

On xitter I regularly engaged with people who had no intention of a serious or honest debate. Their debate method was to insult and demean me for expressing an opinion they disagreed with. If I linked a source for said opinion, they did not debate the opinion, they impugned the source. So I switched

There is data showing normal users using X's algorithmic feed move right; I'm skeptical of how much of a mass influence that has bc the masses don't microblog. But that's not what you're talking about here — it's influence on influential people/orgs, right?

That's probably way harder to assess in any objective/quantitative way, but that doesn't mean it isn't real. Personally I have no sense of how influential X is on influential who stay there but I'm willing to bet it is not 0.

But yeah. People were pretty naive to say Musk buying Twitter was stupid. Now, until influential people+orgs leave X en masse, individual influential people + orgs are stuck with a no-win choice to either stay and have a bad time + hostile algorithm or leave and cede the "public square."

I just like getting random news, pics, and factoids from around the world without the rage bait. I think your conclusion is easy to avoid if you don’t look for that.

takes a lot of stones to blame the people seeking refuge from that hellhole that is X, instead of blaming the pols & institutions for remaining on a platform they know is systematically constructed to sow division and anger.

Hi, your comments indicate that you do not know how to use this platform, which is fine, but there are millions of people who do Nobody with half a brain is ever going back to that cesspool, just sayin
