If you search "Jemima" on here you can see hordes of people screaming that she's a Nazi, and even some trying to carry out amateur genealogy on her family tree, all for saying that their preferred social media platform isn't a perfect utopia. Wild! (2/11)

The strangest thing is that people seem to be angry about several things she didn't argue: 1. That Nazis should be allowed on BlueSky 2. That X remains better than Bluesky (3/11)

I don't think #1 really needs explaining, but on #2: she actually concluded that a theoretical digital town square (which no longer exists precisely because of Elon) would be preferable to all these little walled gardens. Maybe this should’ve been more explicit given widespread confusion! (4/11)

A big irony here is that Elon and his minions have actually dunked on Jemima for a past column (presciently!) saying that he has turned twitter into a dying platform! (5/11)

I'm one of those Brits that has moved across in earnest in the past six weeks. It's nice over here, I wish it had more people who engage with financial journalism, but hopefully that will come. But Jemima has a point on the echo chamber, particularly i/r/t the glorification of block lists. (7/11)

I saw someone last night accuse Jemima of being a "crypto booster". This seemed odd given how lots of the crypto community despise her for critical columns, such as the one screenshotted below. I then realised that people had erroneously labelled her a crypto promoter in various block lists (8/11)

It's great to have tools to better block abusive folk and this is obviously developing in response to what a cesspit Elon's X has become. But if you're blocking people not even for what they believe, but what you mistakenly think they believe, then that's not great! (9/11)

Above all, Jemima's politics aren't easy to categorise. She's probably left of some of her critics on many issues, thought not on others. If you're trying to infer a British person's beliefs from a photo from a reporting trip to Mar-a-Lago you're doing it wrong. (10/11)

My first thought on seeing that picture was a question: is this a person of privilege showing off her new overpriced merch acquisition, or is it someone who feels she is in enemy territory, and is counting coup?

For a platform whose dedicated users like to promote this as a civilised alternative to The Other Place (or sometimes more cringely The Bad Place) the rage all seems a bit, well, uncivil. Anyway, I look forward to the Montagnard Convention putting my name on various blocklists now I guess! (11/11)

I think the whole piece also misses the fact that twitter wasn't ALWAYS a cesspool. It wasn't until post 2010 that abuse of bots, algorithms, etc became a huge problem. People begged for a solution but were offered none, and there was literally no successful alternative. ie...

...twitter built its success while NOT a cesspool, and then that success was hijacked to make it a cesspool. Which is exactly what Google did when it bought Youtube and ruined it. So this whole idea is based on ignoring history at best, revisionist history at worst.

Plus Musk has clearly bought twitter with the goal of helping authoritarians win elections. He's silencing pro-democracy people. That's where his profit goal is in this. The payment he gets for doing that. so no, twitter is not a free speech zone.

I got a lifetime ban on post-Musk pre-rename Twitter as well, right around the time that credulous media hyped him as "a free speech absolutist." My crime was never explained to me, but I did mention the existence of Mastodon.

I would agree with you on this point: too many people here have decided the best way to disagree is being as explicitly abusive as possible (so lots of GFY's & KYS's). Back on Twitter it would've quickly got them auto-suspended so it didn't tend to happen, but nothing stops it here.

To everyone replying: you've hopefully seen I've made a good effort to respond to as many as possible, but unfortunately I have a (sometimes tedious) day job at attend to and now the US is waking up I don't have the time to reply to the firehose. will try to get round to as many as possible later ✌️

Demanding civility without any moral principles is what people are objecting to here. This is a place for people who care about human rights more than about people swearing.

yeah perhaps. I like swearing too when appropriate. But calling someone a fucking Nazi because they criticised your preferred social media platform, and incorrectly labelling a prominent crypto critic as a bitcoin shill, seems a bit daft.

Or maybe people are actually just upset that this place is being described as more biased than the site run by a literal fascist who has banned people from using progressive terminology.

A totally minor point I am curious about: does The Bad Place seem cringe to you because you didn’t watch “The Good Place” or because you hated “The Good Place” or because you never heard of “The Good Place”?

I used it as a semi-joke at first, but the other day I went there to look at art with Richard Morris and somehow fell into a pit of racist discourse the likes of which I've never heard openly said in my long life, though I grew up among people who no doubt thought some of it. Not a joke anymore.

The people who live in an echo chamber with lots of block lists are there either because they want to be or because they're from a minority that gets bullied a lot and they need the self protection. Pile on culture is a problem here. Block lists that actually block people reduce the amount of grief.

As a longtime FT subscriber, I've been quite disappointed with the increasing number of low-quality opinion pieces in the paper. Throwaway low effort columns like this are annoying. Giving right-wing wingnuts like Oren Cass column space to spew lies (and blocking reader comments) is much worse.

I don't think I've ever seen this refered to as "the civilized" alternative. Just the one that doesn't like nazis. People disagreeing with bad reporting doesn't seem to negate that.

If it’s not the missing Nazi accounts that she’s worried about, what’s an account that’s missing or not amplified enough on Bluesky? Like, one example might be nice. As I read it, she thinks Nazi accounts ARE necessary in order tamp down the echo. I think it’s reasonable to find this idea abhorrent.

Nobody should be civil to bigots. The reason this place IS more civilised is because bigots like Jemima have found it harder to get a foothold here. That’s a good thing.

90+% of the time when someone says “[X’s] politics aren’t easy to categorize” they’re talking about like Mark Robinson, so you’re really doing a bang up job arguing she’s not a nazi

Is she or is she not “gender critical” (i.e. transphobic) On this site that’s going to matter a hell of a lot more than if she agrees with the majority on nearly any other “issue”.

I don't give a shit about her politics. She made a stupid post with a bad story and got some criticism for it, and now she wants to act aggrieved, with your help. Thin skinned reporters circling the wagons for each other isn't new but it is tiresome.

yeah everything else aside the story really wasn't well written. it was just weirdly superficial, and they were clearly trolling the bluesky userbase for clicks

Just stop it. You made 11 posts about this to arrive at "her politics aren't easy to categorize". It's unsurprising you would find no problem with the politics of someone you work with, that doesn't make things confusing for us looking at her posts and articles. You got your attention. Now fuck off.

This is deeply unserious. If an American went to a N. Farage function or a meeting of Reform and just had to get a picture in a Reform T-Shirt it would be pretty easy for a U K. Citizen to understand where that person falls on the political spectrum.

So do I, but when they are fans of those who want people like me wiped from existence (like when someone writes glowing articles about British TERFs with genocidal ideas about trans people), it rather sours the experience.

No, he views are easy to characterize, it is just uncomfortable to you because you like her. She is a Nazi curious dilettante who knows that the Nazis coming into power won't affect her personally.
