The main argument for a Strategic BItcoin Reserve seems to be that Bitcoin holders worry about an impending shortage of greater fools and need the US government to act as the greatest fool of last resort.

This is the big payday, endgame, rug pull...if Congress is dumb enough to go along with it. I'm glad people are becoming aware of the looming heist, but seriously the msm needs to get a clue...and soon. Also it would collapse our economy & cause total chaos. This is precisely what Musk & co want.

Finance bros come up with a new scheme, pump up a massive Bubble, then look for bailouts once that Bubble pops. We've seen this for centuries, nothing new about it now. The only thing that stops it is strict regulations and penalties.

Of course. That’s one of the things we appreciate most about free markets. Did you have a point or are you simply taking a moment to tell us something that we already know and appreciate?

The original investment thesis was that crypto would be a new currency independent of any gov’t support or intervention. Turns out that crypto has no broad based, daily transactional use and now crypto bros want a gov’t bailout vs suffering the results of their poor investment choice.

Lots of misperceptions there. 1. Bitcoin and other cryptos are totally different 2. Bitcoin is a protocol. It simply exists. It doesn’t have an “investment thesis”. Never did. 3. No one asked the government to buy bitcoin. The government came to Bitcoin to pander for votes.

At some level ALL money is monopoly money. It has value only to the extent that people believe it has value. But Crypto currency currently has the problem that all the believers want to hold on to it. This is a classic "bad money driving out the good" issue. No one will USE your money.

Wow even after 14 years of the greatest performing asset of all time we have such a terrible take. Bitcoin has been called a ponzi since year and year and so many still are to grasp what this is. 100k is cheap We are still very early. Everyone gets #bitcoin at the price they deserve

It designed to maintain and enhance your purchasing power against the fiat money printer. The more they print the more the value of bitcoin increases. It’s a yard stick against the money printer. Don’t hate bitcoin for going up - hate the fiat money monsters for destroying your purchasing power

Because the people buying it are doing so to sell it. That's not how currency works. It's not used to pay for groceries or the rent. It's purely a status symbol or to hide illegal transactions.

If it were a sport I would point at the scoreboard, the fact of the matter is it hasn’t gone to zero. People have been saying this for years. They now have Bitcoin and ETH ETFs trading on the stock market. Institutions, the same institutions that are propping up your retirement fund are buying.

I can't get over the energy consumed by millions of bank employees commuting to their climate-climate controlled offices just so I can have the privilege of paying their salaries using inflated, debt-encumbered legal tender.

The purpose of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve would be to buy cryptocurrencies so that those who already own them can profit from increasing prices. It's called "pump and dump" in investing circles. It would be an insane thing for our government to invest in, but Trump might do it.

It's the world's biggest pyramid scheme. I've always said it, it can be knocked down and devalued by a single tweet from a fascist. Yet idiots still throw their money at it.

Potentially, 1. Chinese government builds a rival, censorable/centralized digital financial system that threatens US dominance by circumventing dollar 2. US debt crisis becomes unignorable, inflation needed to reduce value of debt US pays off, requiring a need for a deflationary store of value

Bitcoin has been around for 15 years. It hasn’t become the alternative to the dollar because there is no viable use case for it. The costs to produce and maintain it are too high. The primary purpose of the reserve is to get the government to jack up the price. Nothing more.

I agree there isn't an urgency for a reserve. Bitcoin Policy Institute lays out a compelling national security case for it. They also argue SBR would strengthen the dollar. Energy consumption is a major concern to be thoughtfully mitigated. Mining helps stabilize the grid, too. It's nuanced.

We don't even need the government for that purpose. The "fool of last resort" is and will remain the victims of ransomware who are always compelled to buy crypto to pay the ramsom. I'm worried that'll give the incoming admin an incentive not to pursue threat actors.

Bitcoin farms are computers extracting information from other computers. The energy required to run a Bitcoin farm was immense, but that’s changing to sustainable energy. Every Republican who won used Bitcoin; their donors cannot be traced. Criminals prefer Bitcoin.

I am maybe an idiot, but please explain ,someone who knows: What happens to bitcoin without internet and/ or electricity? I mean, when things go very bad, government can shut down the www. I can still buy a loaf of bread with gold or silver...like... old fashioned but real..

I've also never heard a good argument from the bitcoin bro's of why it has to be specifically bitcoin? Like, why doesn't the government just create their own coin, and call it the "dollar coin". You could even have physical representations of it in small paper rectangles. /s

Why do you say that? There is no team, company, foundation, or group of people who have the power to change the code. Its a fully open source collaboration. Full node runners have the final say, and anyone can run a full node. Do some learning before making absurd claims

Yes, there is an incredible shortage of people willing to invest in something that has appreciated 151 million percent. Just type out that you're a stooge for old moneyed interests, you fucking aristocratic dinosaur.

Creating a Bitcoin reserve will allow the holders of Bitcoin to cash in, courtesy of the US federal debt (which really means yet another transfer of trillions of $ from tax paying Americans to the ultra-rich). Pretty standard GOP practice these days!

If we are being completely honest, Wall St stocks have been little better for decades now. Their value is almost entirely tied up in their speculative motion, with almost no attention paid to real world aspects like earnings, dividends, and the like.

Wow, it sure is going to be awfully interesting to see what happens when some significant % of notional wealth is tied up in a scheme that is purely and unavoidably Deflationary. I'm sure that won't be a problem...

Bitcoin is an economic version of The Emperor’s New Clothes, a story where swindlers through an elaborate scheme trick the emperor into believing he wears magnificent clothes, when he actually wears nothing. Similarly, Bitcoin’s value isn’t backed by any physical asset-it relies entirely on belief.

Why stop at Bitcoin? Why not a Strategic Meme Stock reserve? Fill it with all the fun meme stocks, then they could leak buying plans to grifters who in turn could load up before the government starts buying. Put a capital “C” back in crony capitalism.

the *real* argument is it is a gigantic payoff to Trump crypto donors. US Grant must be thinking: my administration was taken down by corruption scandals i was barely involved in. Meanwhile this Trump guy does it out in the open, unapologetically, and *so far* has gotten away with it.

I am personally a liberal and respectfully disagree. I think some the louder voices tend to be from the right (true on many topics), but many of the values of the left are congruous with bitcoin. Not saying we need a reserve, but bitcoin shouldn’t be partisan. cryptoslate.com/us-bitcoiner...

Conservatives: Liberals are always wanting to take other people's money and spend it. Libertarian crypto bro: We need more of other people's money to steal for ourselves!

Bitcoin is not inherently a pyramid scheme, but its current high value would be unsustainable in a fully regulated market environment. Market manipulation should be the major concern within the current Bitcoin ecosystem.

The Dutch Tulip mania lasted three years. But it also cemented the Netherlands as the flower capital bringing in 400 years of prosperity. The Bitcoin "bubble" has been going for for 15 years. Study Bitcoin.

Not really true because up until recently Bitcoin’s value has fluctuated kind of wildly. Now it’s straight up hence a bubble. I prefer a currency that has something backing it (government, precious metals, or even tulips)than one that has nothing behind it except an electrical outlet.

If only there was some currency the U.S. government could control! I bet it would be way more stable than any cryptocurrency. It might even become the reserve currency for all of global finance or something. If only!

Apple Google Microsoft Amazon and Saudi Aramco are the only business entities Bitcoin market cap hasn't exceeded, yet. I won't argue it isn't a Ponzi scheme, because I don't see any gain in winning or losing that argument. Dismissing it doesn't make it go away tho. Seems worth understanding.

That isn't a theory of collapse tho, so you aren't really furthering a discussion from a position of an informed participant. It's just flippant dismissal. There are fundamentals to bitcoin Someday the sky will fall. Do you want to talk about that?

Bitcoin is based on the greater fool theory. It has no intrinsic value. Invest in companies that have real products. Companies with a competitive advantage or with a moat around their business will grow and make money. Bitcoin mining uses tremendous energy resources. Don't speculate, invest.

Essentially it's a cash give away to foolish billionaires and drug cartels with a giant waste of money for working class Americans. We have the USD why would we openly empower it's competitor that's like cutting off your own nuts in front of a pack of wild hyenas utter foolishness.

Cryptocurrency use as a currency for transactions is going down while its use as a speculative holding is going up. I want no part of it but I've lost out on a lot of money for having this conviction. They want govt to hold reserves for bailout security

Yes. Those beanie babies holders need someone to pay the bill when the whole thing goes to hell. Therefore the need for a HUGE sucker to back up the lunacy with actual money. And that's where taxpayers come in.

Not so sure about that. We'll have to wait & see. It depends on what Criminal Trump & Co plans are & what they are able to get away with -both known/unknown. Eg if T insists on paying foreign creditors in bitcoin, it could have a destabilizing impact. If Chinese don't buy US bonds, we're in trouble
