Women trying to succeed in Silicon Valley AI and effective altruist spaces are reporting feeling serious social pressure to attend sex parties - where people have reported being sexually assaulted, like below. Events like Aella’s “Slutcon,” which is happening again this weekend.

The bizarre culture that’s sprung up around Silicon Valley AI companies - which overlaps hugely with rationalist and effective altruist circles - appears to be seriously pressuring some women into attending sex parties for the sake of networking. This is, needless to say, horrifying.

“What I personally find so frustrating is no one is ever given an ounce of grace for the understandable ways these conversations might blur. Whereas, men who act poorly are given a delusional amount of cover & protection. They say illogical things and get polite responses.” - on sexism in AI spaces.

More comments from people in the Silicon Valley AI space on how centering group sex events in the scene is hostile to women:

Yes, Slutcon is real. And while there’s nothing wrong with this kind of event in perfect isolation, in the context of “women in Silicon Valley tech are reporting feeling serious social pressure to attend,” it becomes very gross. (BTW, Gretta is Eliezer Yudkowsky’s partner). slutcon.com

“When dealing with perfectly spherical humans, sex is a total-nonissue. There will not be questions about consent, motive, or libertarian free will” for all other humans, oh boy this is gonna be supercomplicated and we will never have a truly satisfying answer.

It's not in an isolated context though! We know there's career pressure on people to attend these. That's immediately so far past the line of OK as to render the rest of the discussion moot.

Which is especially enraging considering how many autistic and ND women who also struggle with this stuff are likely in this social scene

Feels like they're trying to steer kink and polyamory away from the stereotypes of organized events being rote and proceduralist but they're reinventing the reasons why that exists in real time. Like yes the consent checklists don't get the juices flowing but this is why events have it.

Step 1: decide we are at a status level where all women must be socially confident and normatively hot Step 2: few of the AFAB people who have been techies forever go to your parties Step 3: see, women just aren’t interested in/good at tech

and I mean goodness knows my 20s were characterized by all the nerds of all genders I knew being at freaky sex parties they didn't invite me to because it was so obviously not my scene 😂 but it seemed that like...more consent and less normativity were involved

Indeed, the intersection of work/career, power/money, word philosophy, sex is the problem, much as some would want to kink-shame in isolation. (Pressure to booze with cow-orkers in the Before Times was bad enough; add unpaid overtime, results in dating cow-orkers and office drama.)

Mmmmmmmmkay I am kind of feeling like what should happen at Slutcon is that Olivia Benson and all her friends should bust down the joint and arrest all the organizers

it’s also a shame in that I can truly see the value of teaching a workshop to men on “what do you do if you’ve been called a creep,” except that I somehow don’t think these are the right *people* to teach such a workshop in the slightest

It feels sort of like how evangelical religions teach kids to go door to door, getting guaranteed rejections to make them view the in-group better. Obviously these men are infinitely more culpable than any teen could be but it's still "teach ignorant person a lie as truth to lock them in" imo.

Let’s also remember that this is the same group of organizers in the Silicon Valley AI scene who are also involved with throwing “consensual non-consent” events - IE, simulated rape. Which whistleblowers like Sonia Joseph have cited as creating a “coercive climate” for female AI researchers.

taco belle here is doing a good job of laying out the pretty obvious problems with weaving group sex parties, sometimes involving consensual non-consent, into AI industry culture:

Now I'm wondering what Weaving Group sex parties would be like, remembering what the overlap between kinksters and crafters is like, concluding "pretty much the same as normal sex parties" and retreating back into my gutter.

Aimee Pepper is also making some great points on how “the culture of Al safety/Lighthaven is detrimentally linked to the culture of CNC (consensual non-consent) orgies.” Again: if you are a woman who wants to work on making AI safer, this is apparently the social world you must navigate.

Hang on a minute. I stumbled across this thread and seem to have ended up in the last 10 minutes of a horror film having missed all the explanation of how it got there. How anyone, anywhere could think any of this is ok, let alone requiring explanation of why it’s problematic… WTF is this?

I do wish they’d stop insisting that it’s “Bay culture” writ large, because that’s a bad conceit to give the rats. You might not get in on the A gold rush, but there’s plenty of ”normal” people not partaking in all this.

the idea of throwing a CNC event to which people who need the concept explained to them are invited tautologically negates the first C in CNC I’m honestly unconvinced it’s even possible for a CNC scene involving enough people to call it an “event” to still be CNC instead of outright non-consensual

I guess technically some pornography would meet that criteria, but even for all of the endless sins and evils in our porn industry there are some poorly enforced legal safeguards. These AI space parties lack even the rudimentary regulatory oversight porn is subject to.

Wonder how those same men would react to a woman taking the position of power and wanting to peg the guy? Does the dynamic of CNC work in that direction as well? Or does it only apply to men in that way?

Okay, tangential to the sex/consent stuff, but if lots of these folks are "expanding their consciousnesses" I can very much understand the paranoid apocalypticism they are developing about their work.

Yeah - prob with a certain class of men is that when they get shipped off to therapy or a workshop, they'll find ways to weaponize what they learn there, instead of using it to fix themselves

The problem is that the workshops people do need to take in this case are not at something called slutcon; they are the ones that convince them that Woke Has Gone Too Far “Oh this is unpleasant for you and suggests your behavior is creepy and you need to change it? Good, you’re listening”

What do you do if you've been called a creep? Simply reshape from the ground up the entire landscape of intimate activity such that it only takes place in delimited settings where everybody has preregistered their consent to everything that could happen, possibly on the blockchain

Reroll your rizz? Tho srsly, they need to go on art museum/nature/life trips. Then when they finally get how small and insignificant they are vs how big the world is, maybe they'll get it.

Maybe. Tho the workshop may have good intentions, the idea is flawed, as is clear from research on educating teachers for cultural diversity. A far more powerful experience is for these guys, who don't understand how/why they are oppressors, to work with women who are equals, and learn from them.

Of course they aren't rationalists will litteraly try to logically flow chart rape in such a way that the only way anyone could prevent it is by being willing to upon the implication of sexual harassment bite the throat out of their attacker or they basically deserve whatever happens to them.

That idea that kissing is right out but massage is okay is a big red flag for me. I've encountered that massage culture in science fiction spaces (there is a distinct overlap) and it is often intensely creepy and a prelude to groping, plus there's hostility towards those who reject it.

I'm getting flashbacks to the Pick-Up Artist community/scam, because this is what you'd get if you took their ideas and wrote them in bullet points. The method of placing nervous virgin males in a room full of attractive women who act like their awkward advances are working is the same.

Given how interconnected the tech scene is, I am now curious if some of the OG Pick-Up Artists were connected somehow, because this is EXACTLY like what they were doing before, just refined to appeal to men in Silicon Valley.

In iso I will slightly differ in that it codes dissecting humanity into some secret machine code (irony of ironies) for getting what the attendee wants. Linguistic dressing changed, but "get chicks" is eternal. Was TJ too far? Cheetahs parking lot full?

Have watched people squirt linguistics over sex for decades in an Herculean effort to claim they aren't just trying to get what they want rather than just turning the question around and asking the other part(ies) what do you want, really? Amazing really.

On one ✋, there's a human tragedy there. Empty holes in their psyches/intellects that will never fill no matter how many SC they attend. Then I remember the massive pain they've caused and are causing (incl directs to me) and they can f right off.

Theorizing Yarin/Yud/others and me (we're nominally one gen) diverged bc I chased 🎶, 🎨, and beauty (aesthetics) in all forms and they chased obtuse word jerk offs. They were stroking it in usenets groups among themselves as I rolled into aol chats asking, "who likes <insert band here>?"

This is all just PUA shit in different clothing. It's all very heteronormative & patriarchal. This is just what patriarchy looks like in a society with effective contraceptives that can be controlled by women.

This is just Andrew Tate/Pick Up Artist horseshit with new clothes. Same con on desperate lonely men who had shit dads, giving them permission to be shit to women and calling it "The Game". This new theme is particularly awful because it tries to wear a feminist/female enpowerment skirt. Losers.

I don’t think vibrators for “uterine arousal” would sell very well … or get good ratings … or avoid causing serious injuries that we can see (from way over here before they’re invented) are inevitable.

Intro to flirting does sound like it could be REALLY useful in a different setting, if it focuses on trying to teach the difference between fun banter and bothering people. However I bet here it's "How to trick women."

Re: I think there are elements that can be taught. Is she "yes anding" playing along or is she trying to change the subject? Does she have an easy escape route or are you pressuring her to join the conversation? More specifically I'd say things like...

*ǵerh₂os to the polls@calieber.bsky.social

I don't think that's something that can be taught though

There are men who can go from zero to explicit talk and it will work for them. By you being in this class, you're not one of them. Light and breezy is where you should start. The minimum viable product (hey they're techies!) isn't sex or 2nd base: it's an enjoyable conversation for both.

You can do everything "right" and she still might not want to go out with you. Accept that going in and enjoy the banter for its own sake, not as a stepping stone to something else. In the long run, getting better at communicating and understanding boundaries helps, but it's a process.

all the language treating flirting like an RPG skill is SENDING me. like sorry I only have like two points in rizz, I'm running a yapping-proficiency build rn also I feel like the framing here is still downstream of, and unavoidably polluted by the runoff from, "pick-up artist" culture

are humans going to change in a few 'woke' generations? I think not! we've been trying to change for 6000 years of recorded history. sigh... the good news is that species seem to last only 2-10million years, then speciation can happen.

This particular stuff is very, very Online Teenage Millennial coded rather than "human nature" coded. Doing this kind of shit to part of an ingroup tended to result in expulsion (or worse) in human history.

like, even if you're socially awkward and freeze up when a pretty gal looks you in the eye, it's actually easy to have a pleasant conversation with a woman you've just met! how about this rain, I love those glasses frames, read any good books lately, etc. - not that hard! what makes it daunting?

the pressure you put on a conversation by treating it as a seduction tactic. it's not enough to have a nice interaction with someone you met, it has to be SO NICE and they have to be SO IMPRESSED that they want to see more of you & maybe even get in your pants. a friendly chat is treated as failure.

if you treat every conversation with any woman you meet in a social setting like it's a job interview for the position of Boyfriend, you're always gonna be stressed out. job interviews suck.

"Someone has called you creepy. Maybe more than one person. How can you make sense of that? We don't have all the answers..." I don't have all the answers either, but I CAN answer this one. It's because you're a fucking creep. Try Stop Being a Creep for improved social interactions with women.

Also: this all feels pretty weird. By all means have a good old orgy with safe words but this reads like some tech bros got AI to create a version of a tech show where they get laid.
