I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

They are pro-fascist. They either know they're pro-fascist or they believe "fascist" is literally meaningless and just an insult people use against them. Cleverly adjusting the terminology we use will do no more to change their minds than highlighting Trump's hypocrisy does. It's a liberal fantasy.

Agreed. The ones who do understand what it stands for and oppose it are pro-fascist. But, like any short form of words, "antifa" can sound mysterious to those who don't know that it is simply the short form for "anti-fascism."

They were the ones that helped popularize the term. Think Richard Spencer setting himself up to be punched by “antifa”… all brilliant inorganic manipulation of language and shifting Overton windows

Or...how about we organize and reclaim the term? We know ANTIFA isn't an actual org or structure, so let's make one. If the ACLU's sole mission is to protect civil liberties, than ANTIFA's sole mission is protect against fascism. Trump loves an invisible enemy. Let's take that advantage away.

Majority probably don’t know, including the members of the administration! I agree with you, though I’m really enjoying our humor about their false assessments of antifa & would be sorry to see that go. (🤪small potatoes I know)

I've been saying this forever, but I did so again just a week ago: bsky.app/profile/sanc...

Big problem with "ANTIFA" is "branding". Calling it ANTIFA makes it sound like an African-type group (sounds like "Queen Latifah"); thus, "non-white" - already destroying its Anti-Fascist forward face by SEEMING 2B a counter-culture movement. Just like calling fascists "FASH" makes them sound COOL!

Do non-fascists even use that term much? Seemed to me that the majority of users are, well, fascists. Anti-fascists seem more likely to identify *fascists* and presume anyone else is against such things. Such people seem to have just grabbed on to "antifa" because it was strange and scary sounding.

Problem is there's more syllables in Anti-fascism. Doesn't flow as easily. We definitely need a replacement. Doesn't help that most people pronounce it "Ann Tea Fa" instead of "Anti Fa"

In Austria and Germany, "anti-fa" would be associated with the anarchist so called black block at demonstrations. People dressed in black, wearing baclavas often, sometimes violent. All organisers of human rights demos fear them because they are unpredictable and stupid. That's the framing.

antifa is not an organization but it is a political tendency with a history and a flag. fascists dislike it because of its history of physical confrontation of fascists in the streets all over Europe since WW2. people who march under the antifa flag are spoiling for a fight. if you're not, don't 🤷

Half of my younger employees didn't understand the 1945 picture of Eisenhower and his top officers (taken shortly after V-E Day which was posted here a couple days ago). We need to explain more what it was they did and why. I may have to change my sign for the 18th.

Seriously! Just basic branding. You could tell it was a bad label because Fox News seized on it immediately. It sounds foreign and sinister, so they just hammered it home right from the start.

I completely agree. I'm also of the autistic opinion that accuracy is more important than convenience. I say 'anti racist' and 'anti fascist' when describing people or movements because I know how easily I can be misunderstood.

When I was 16, I read 1984 and was completely confused that Orwell was a socialist. I had been indoctrinated to think socialism was evil growing up, like it was responsible for the Nazis. I imagine that confusion is what a lot of repubs might feel when confronted this way

I think that caring what their base knows or doesn't know is irrelevant at this point. You're not going to dismantle the echo chamber in time to affect anything. No authoritarian regime has ever been removed at the ballot. Trump is now the commander in chief and primary funder of the military.

True I’m in that habit , though they also the same to either say you can’t call everyone you disagree with a fascist while doing Nazi shit. But making it harder for them always a goal

From what I understand, the amorphous group antifa (anti-fascists) have shown up at peaceful protests. To place themselves between riot police & protesters, they see our militarized police as fascists & are there to fight fascism for our 1st amendment right to protest.

I mean, we kinda have? The only people really using "antifa" are the fascists, because they don't want to say "anti-fascists". As always, it's the media letting them get away with it.

It's a good thought but I'm not sure the vibes are right. Saikat in San Francisco just did a rally on the 8th to 800 people and they did NOT cheer enthusiastically when he used that word... 1/3

If a fairly diverse, extremely progressive, highly engaged crowd is still kind of ehhh on the terminology, trying to teach conservatives that "antifa is short for anti-fascist" might land as another "smarty-pants elite" fail. I think leaning into "Bully" even over "authoritarian" is... 2/3

a safer strategy. And joking about antifa seems to be working to decrease tension -- a photo I saw recently had a pair of knitting elderly ladies with t-shirts that read "Auntie Fa"

We should also use the term democratic socialism and not entitlements for SSI/Medicare. Also, farmers are screaming they need bailouts to counter the tariffs, but what they really want is democratic socialism to save them. I have yet to meet a trumper who understands the terms socialism or fascism.

Yes. Change the narrative. If one is anti-antifascist one is by default pro-fascist. Our proud heritage (in theory if not in execution) is anti-fascist. We cannot let latter-day fascist wannabes distort the truth besmirch political rivals with slander and lies.

Here’s the thing. Antifa isn’t an organization. It’s an ideology. Only ignorant, not woke white people are leaning into something they don’t understand or don’t want to understand. Like listening to an old ass German is going to make it any easier to understand. Didn’t know Trump is German huh??

I am SURE THE BASE, AND the president, does not understand that there is no ANTIFA ORGANIZATION! That anyone who does not want to see TRUMP getting more power than ANY PRESIDENT before him, is called ANTIFA “ WE ARE THE PEOPLE “ , and will practice our FREEDOM OF Speech on OCTOBET 18! Join us!

not just them - I have people on our side disavowing being antifa because of the media scare stuff and yet when I say "Oh I think you probably are since I can't see you being pro fascism" they are like "Oh NO I am totally against fascism" .... sigh

I think Trump’s base not only doesn’t know what antifa means, they don’t care. Like Trump, they lack curiosity. Trump says it’s bad, and they believe him. Full stop. You are never going to convert MAGA supporters, especially if you challenge their belief in the dear leader.

Absolutely agree. It's not just their base that doesn't know what it stands for, neither do the idiotic MAGA in Congress & this admin. The Orange Idiot just sits back & repeats what sick shit Coffin Miller & the rest tell him. Or he sees it on FOX! Take the ammo away from them!

But even in English there is no reasonable way to pronounce anti fascist as anteefa. All *actual* antifa in the US have always used the anti-fa pronunciation. Saying anteefa is like calling it the democrat party... a deliberate word game to get uninformed people to adopt a right wing framing

Unfortunately in the USA the decades of backlash against learning multiple languages means even when we explain it, monolingual people still won't process that. But current teen German language learners seem happy to remind people and THAT brings me joy.

It is time for real history lessons in America. Europe understands what fascism is and we can see that it is quickly taking over in America. Americans: Are you listening... you are near the point of no return.

They're good at using words to twist their narrative. They pushed calling The Affordable Care Act to be called "Obamacare", making people against it from name alone. What infuriates me is Dems never push back for whatever reason. Never insist using the proper name and even adopt GOP's naming. Smh

They know what it stands for and I doubt there’s more than 150 & no central committee running it If you don’t know the history here is how it started: It’s 1939, Birmingham, England. A group of Fascists start to March against the Jewish community thereThe local blocked the fascists and beat them up

Yes, because it makes the uneducated think that it’s a black, racist and violent group when it’s not! Antifa means anti- fascist but the media doesn’t drop that knowledge on us!!
