I'm not a pro-ban person when it comes to substances but it remains beyond insane that 7-OH is being marketed and sold like it's 5 Hour Energy. This shit is not normal "kratom" and it's not an energy supplement. It's fucking Oxy and if you get addicted to it you will get dopesick.

The 7-OH dosages head shops advertise in their windows are insane. One pill containing several times as much as anyone without a substantial tolerance could reasonably handle. Wildly unethical on so many levels

It's also insane that "Only drink half the bottle" in tiny print for dose disclosure is allowed. No one is drinking half of a five hour energy style shot bottle.

Seeing the packaging being readily available for random distributors to provide and just pop in what ever they feel like is insane. The “same” product (label, pill capsule) being different things is terrifying and vile. Regulating supplements would help but that ship has long sailed :/

ok now I’m curious, how long have these been on the market? Abt 10 yrs ago a friend’s ex spiraled while obviously addicted to kratom, using constantly for extreme emotional numbing. he prob wouldve been an abusive pos & schizophrenic anyway but never occurred to me that “kratom” might be other stuff

Does RFKJr, or Trump family have stock in 7-OH companies? Is it corruption or Republican eugenics? "Products Containing 7-OH Can Cause Serious Harm." FDA. But FDA, which has periodically throttled access to ADHD medication for DECADES, refuses to regulate 7-OH www.fda.gov/consumers/co...

fda.gov7-OH Products Haven’t Been Proven Safe or Effective for Any UseFDA advises consumers to avoid 7-OH products, including foods, dietary supplements and those claiming to treat an ailment or disorder. 7-OH is not approved as a

I think that anybody should be able to legally purchase and consume any substance of their choosing. HOWEVER, its imperative that said substance be clearly labeled, dosed, and that the consumer be made clearly aware of any significant hazards that it may pose to their continued health and happiness.

Oh, well I never said that. Or at least thats not what i was trying to say. In my perfect world it would be highly regulated, with high standards for chemical purity and mandatory education for harm reduction and best practices among users.

my own opinion is that there are certain substances that simply should not be sold with any veneer of legitimacy or safety. Like straight up opium (if you boil poppy seed pods, you can still get benefits from it without possibly getting addicted to heroin).

Extra level of frustration because it shares the same name, people try it as their well meaning friends have used regular kratom and recommended it for this or that. I had to warn my mom about it because regular kratom might help her, but she's not online so she had no idea there was a difference

"In animal studies, the compound has shown strong analgesic potency (reported up to ~13× that of morphine) and produces opioid-like tolerance and withdrawal." yikes

Where’s this from? 13x more potent than morphine sounds way off, that would be fentanyl levels of potency. Heroin is about 2x morphine. Otherwise though yeah, Kratom hits opioid receptors and can cause dependency and withdrawal

I was just looking over the FDA info sheet on it that goes over various tests that have been done on 7-OH and based on those it’s more in the neighborhood of 2-3x the potency of morphine, so up around heroin in strength, which is *crazy* to have sold unregulated in gas stations

The ability to require very explicit labelling is in fact an *excellent* reason to be anti-ban. IMHO they should sell heroin over the counter; the USDA should certify its purity; they should make it *very* explicit what it can do to you; and you should be able to get help quitting with zero stigma.

I'm pro drugs being legal... But maybe make it *slightly* clearer on the label, nowhere does that say "hi I'm fucking oxy" It does say its a natural leaf extract tho so I assume its safe.

A lot of (true) psychedelics come from fungus (so, not a plant, no leaves). And opium is from the seed pod (or seeds? can't remember which) Technically, marijuana is from the reproductive bud, not an energy making leaf. I'm sure there are others ... 😎

Ya, the real problem 99% of the time is advertising and packaging. I am increasingly convinced that we simply need to ban advertising completely if we want to unfuck things. The law also just needs to be way quicker to punish businesses for anything adjacent to lying.

This is what happens when legalism is promoted above all else and becomes synonymous with ethical and safe. The de-criminalization of drugs requires shifting the culture through education in addition to more housing/recovery resources.

You'll never believe who supports removing any warnings from gas station drugs: bsky.app/profile/kenv...

Ken Vogel@kenvogel.bsky.social

SCOOP from @by-cjewett.bsky.social & me: Markwayne Mullin urged the Department of Health and Human Service to remove warnings from the FDA website about the health risks of the gas station drug kratom. Mullin owns equity in a leading kratom company called Botanic Tonics that could have benefited.

At the same time, however, I've been informed by several people that it is the only thing keeping them from getting addicted to heroine 🤷 so ya know, there is another side to this story. Complicated situation

If you want to purchase and use this stuff that's fine, I don't judge and in fact, I get it! But people should not accidentally get addicted to stuff they think is something else. If the only lines we have are "zero regulation" or "illegal" everything will eventually be illegal

I think our country's absolute refusal to have any conversations around common sense drug policy is going to lead to even more deaths. And the fact that these "supplements" are so unregulated means those pushing these narratives will alsO evade accountability. Shitty place to be!

Narcotics are pretty much my bright line that there exists substances that are too dangerous for a layperson to self regulate. It’s like invisible radiation. You can doom yourself and not realize it. Addicted by the end of the first dose.

Everything in the substance just needs to written in the package and we need to make chemical literacy and bigger thing in public schools. DARE should just be about teaching kids responsible substance use.

There is a pharmacist on youtube that has gas station pills tested in a mass spectrometer. Every single one of them is some controlled drug combo, it's insane.

They had a profile on gas station drugs on John Oliver's show. They sell the packaging on Alibaba to people who put their own pills in, so even if you've taken something from exactly identical packaging before, you could be getting a completely different drug the next time.

A friend of mine is struggling to get sober from alcohol and he's started to take kratom for his anxiety and I'm so worried about him but like, there's nothing I can do to help him

It's definitely coming into focus why the local purveyors of this stuff appear to be pumping money into the MN GOP and a *bunch* of local races here.

I'm not a pro-ban person when it comes to substances but it remains beyond insane that 7-OH is being marketed and sold like it's 5 Hour Energy. This shit is not normal "kratom" and it's not an energy supplement. It's fucking Oxy and if you get addicted to it you will get dopesick.

my grandmother, having a lot of issues with depression and anxiety and insomnia as a result of those, looked for a "natural" remedy because of ~us healthcare bullshit about insurance~ making proper care difficult to access and was recommended kratom by i dont know who. 7-OH was advertised as kratom

there are kratom/7-OH shops all over Tucson - it seems people get addicted to this stuff, then need more and more, and sooner or later they are using oxy or heroin, while sellers market kratom/7-OH as a way to get off of oxy/heroin

it can also pop a false positive for suboxone which can be real problematic for people who think they're skirting around any mandatory utox situations to be clear I don't condone this kind of drug testing as a practice but if you don't know and use 7-OH...can get fucked over big time depending

I am coming along in my harm reduction and need to prioritize the people who use drugs vs. my education and stigma about the situation I don't know how I feel about banning substances in the context of being a student in this area AND the fact this is in gas stations is FUCKING CRAZY to me

Yeah as a chronic pain patient- you don’t even have to be addicted to something for your body to adjust to its presence and suffer if you try to quit. Addiction is compulsive use, but even just regular use can leave you struggling with withdrawal symptoms. (This also isn’t just drugs like opioids)

Thankfully many places like MI were able to stave off a full ban because at least enough sfate legislators knew the distinction, and this is a working class state with a lot of folks already on disability and crumbling rural healthcare, so they quietly let it die in the senate.

Grow opium poppies and make tea (or leave the tea in a slow cooker without a lid until you have gunk that’s a bit easier to get down than the tea, which is the worst tasting substance I’ve ever consumed

As a chronic insomniac I get pretty desperate for something to knock me out, I don’t even know the name of the pill I bought but it worked way too well and I felt like I was lucky I didn’t drink that night or take my other sleep meds. Definitely got spooked from trying that again.

Yeah, if you want to do it, sure go ahead, but I’m really angry my friend just walked into a gas station and bought it without a clear idea what it would do

It's like if we let convenience stores sell crushed up morphine pills next to the Slim Jims. The lack of regulation is terrifying, but if there's a dollar to be made in exploiting desperate or bored people, someone will find a way to put it in a colorful wrapper.

It's rather telling that up here in Canada, where there is relatively strong supplement regulation compared to the US, the gas stations & even the indie convenience stores are not rife with this stuff. Even then, it's still available online, but that's instantly radically less accessible.

The government is too stupid to regulate this without banning kratom, I don't want them to do that. If we had a gov that did meaningful bans this might be fine, but i don't want them to ban the thing that gets people off of Suboxone or other opiates. Kratom is better than those things. I hate this.
