i think this is exactly right. fascism is the Death Drive as ideology. it's why the catastrophic end of the Nazi Party does not deter people from worshipping Nazis. that the Nazis destroyed Germany along with the rest of Europe is part of the appeal.

I can see this. I think of fascism as living out a collective rape fantasy where immature and insecure men feel like they can exercise pure power with no societal constraints. It’s the ad absurdem example of the trust-building of adolescent males by group norms-violation.

It’s also remarkably compatible with Christian apocalyptic thinking. You can be a warrior in a world historical struggle where death makes you a martyr. The fact that the government is working so hard to silence critics of Israel is part of this story.

Yeah, it’s why negotiating and trying to reach good faith is such an uphill struggle, and why a lot of the tools relied on to reach “compromise” or some sort of rationality are meeting unexpected (or expected) faliure. There is no 4D chess. No pragmatic cynicism, just blinkered nihilism.

This will sound morbid and certainly has its exceptions, but…anyone else noticed a certain kind of violent person hasn’t been making headlines ever since they had the opportunity to join the modern SA? I doubt it’s coincidence.

It’s precisely the abusive husband who shoots the wife, then the kids, and then himself. Rage, resentment, impotence, all finally let out and then eliminated. The right “loves” America like their battered wife and they will take it with them.

Hermann Rauschning wrote a pretty interesting book on this exact idea about 90 years ago (albeit with the wrong conclusions). Cultural nihilism and acts of mass violence — organized and rationalized by a political ideology or as individual pieces of shock “entertainment” — are inextricably linked.

The postwar zeitgeist demanded cultural transformation. The “ethic” that offered meaning to so many was one that amalgamated cultural romanticism with cultural nihilism. Mein Kampf is very clear that “struggle” and violence and death in itself *is* the ideology. Tell me that’s not 4ch*n and now X!

This begs the question of what does a profoundly malignant narcissist do with the most powerful military on earth when he is staring down the barrel of his own impending mortality? He already believes the world revolves around him. Why should it be allowed to continue once he's gone?

Someone else on this site described it as such and it's stuck in my mind that the right fought for 40 years to get ahold of daddy's gun and without a second thought stuck it in their mouths

📍Rev. Kenny Callahan, a Minneapolis pastor, said “I’m not afraid.” ICE pointed a gun in his face. 🧊 Then said: “You’re white. You wouldn’t be fun anyway.” This was fear and Intimidation PAXIS trains you to hold the line—legally, emotionally. ➡️ paxis.app

Annihilators, yes, but they don't want to slay themselves. This is more a purge mentality. The flaw in the “school shooter ideology” idea is the belief that these people want to go out in a blaze of glory. They don’t. They've a utopia in mind, which begins w/ a cleansing fire upon which to rebuild.

I'm listen to true crime content & underbelly are people that live vicariously through the killers. Caller "Sainthood" if you're aware of the terror-gram (insta) group. People trying to urge each other into spree shootings. Heard ICE was running recruitment ads in that space and it made total sense.

I've thought about this a lot for years but mostly just in terms of headlines that made the words "suicide cult" or "death impulse" spring into my head, this connects the dots very clearly in a way I could never quite identify. And yeah all the Trumpers I know fit the profile.

It's been my belief for over a decade. All of their stated values have the end state of masses of people dying all around them, and like with Covid they'll tell you that they'll happily go, too. From banning abortion and no gov healthcare to stand your ground to laissez faire, they worship death

I was just thinking about Hitler's "Nero Directive" that decreed all the remaining transportation, communication, and industrial infrastructure should be blown up if Germany's leadership fell.

There's a range of destructive people: Some want to shatter a store front to loot what's inside, some will subdue others as slaves for their own financial benefit, and the worst are so psychologically damaged, they just want to destroy, because hurting others is the only thing that satisfies them.

“the catastrophic end of the Nazi Party does not deter people from worshipping Nazis.” Never saw it put this way. A compelling reason for another Nuremberg.

i think Abbie Hoffman, Susan Sontag and a long list of others have said as much, often and with urgency. But that doesnt stop the Death Wish crowd one bit. They think it makes them based.

Look no further than The Turner Diaries aka the white supremacist's Bible. It's one of the most popular books among fascists and the main character does a horrendous amount of brutality then dies in a glorious sacrifice. That is their goal. To have their meaningless life vindicated in death.

I recently looked at a diary of a Luftwaffe radar and communications guy. He survived the war. The only political comment he made was as a POW, postwar, on hearing a group of French rail workers sing Le Marseille. He wrote that if they knew what the Russians were doing, they wouldn't be singing.

Yes, the Soviets were really bad. But. This diary spans most of the war and over a year after. There is some kind of mental canceling going on with this. It could be he self-censored out of fear but it kept up after the war, when the chief Nazis were dead or imprisoned.What-about-ism to the maximum.

Fascism is a death cult, yes. This is well-known. However, fascism is structured like a cult (perhaps all totalist systems are). The death drive in such an environment can cut in more than one direction: against the self, but also against others.

Jim Jones headed a cult that turned violence inward. But Charles Manson convinced his followers to murder. According to psychologists, these two drives are closely related. bsky.app/profile/nova...

You're not going to like where this is going. I say this as someone who for the last decade has studied such subject matter as social psychology, extremism, cults, psychopathy, mass media, genocide, authoritarianism, US history, &c. I can scarcely express how much trouble we're in.

In this vein, it was illuminating to learn that one of Albert Speer’s objectives in his architectural plans for Nazi Germany was that their buildings should produce good-looking ruins, like the Greeks’ and Romans’ did.

The irony is that the Greeks and the Romans did not build to produce good-looking ruins, and if Speer had been able to speak with any of them, his head would likely be on a pike in about five minutes.

Reminded of what George Carlin once said on Charlie Rose: "People who hate the government are involved in a form of suicide because government is self-government, and if you hate the government, you hate yourself."

Yes, it is. Nihilism, taken far enough always ends in death. The question for our society is - how far will the nihilists take us all? Will their "ideology" be defeated, or will they drag us all into oblivion?

Hmm... Trump said "I am your retribution." Now I understand that he means revenge for being born. I do empathize with today's YA population. In my day, I got a decent job after one visit to an employment agency and one interview; never even wrote a resume. Retired w/benefits after 34 years...

maybe w the current 4chanoid thing. in general I think it's unwitting, they're just a level of idiotic beyond what we can comprehend. they need final, total victory, but are helpless to act in any way that doesnt guarantee a stalingrad type result, at some point the reality is unavoidable

A movement of people whose feelings of inferiority and exclusion from mainstream society led them to lean into that condition and burn down the world that made them feel bad. No interest in self-improvement because that requires accepting shame. Obliterate everything and avoid that at all costs.

Despair is stupidly easy. You have to look to Minneapolis to know true strength, and look to yourself to carry on their truth and their bravery.

It was suicidal for committed Nazis at the time. The book Education For Death, which was written by an American school administrator who got to tour Nazi schools, shows that death worship was pretty consistent and fundamental to the ideology. Only ambition that was encouraged was to die for Hitler.

This description of the American Nazi Party has always resonated with me. Denathor dousing himself in oil and climbing onto his pyre. Handing over the realm to the orcs. Oblivion.

Agreed except I don’t think they are able to do if A then B. So the B part, the suicide part, is not something they think will happen. These are people who fail the marshmallow test and won’t wait for a second marshmallow if one is in front of them now. They don’t think past the present moment.

I suspect that they hope they don’t have to invoke it until Trump has finished his second year. That way Vance might be able to get nearly 10 years as POTUS to facilitate Thiel’s agenda.

i *just* finished a project inspired by Jane Borden’s book Cults Like Us, a book about the lasting legacy of Puritan doomsday thinking. It’s a good lens to understand things with!

I think about this often in the context of members of minority groups who aid and abet the fascist machines that orchestrate their destruction. Someone back at The Bad Place (possibly @alexandraerin.com ?) wrote a powerful essay comparing Milo Y to The Operative from Serenity through this lens.

The idea of someone knowingly, willingly, working towards a world where someone like them doesn’t exist … it’s the ultimate in nihilism. Not just self-erasure, but annihilation for anyone who shares your marginalisation.

i was just thinking along some related lines actually bsky.app/profile/irgo...

Y'know I very much reject psychoanalytic frameworks in general but I think I really underestimated the amount of people (and voters!) who fit the most brutish Freudian description

Oh - like those criminals who secretly just want you to catch them, so they do increasingly more blatant things until they get caught. That actualy makes a lot of sense. How do we test the hypothesis? And we can't find even a couple Republican Senators that want to break that cycle. Sad

I saw a cartoon about it, which echoes what I've said for years about them. The goal is 2 people left on Earth claiming to be the purest of the pure in a death match to be the final victor of purity.

I had a professor who told the class about the Battle of Berlin and how there was really heavy fire from building to building. Tanks were firing at point blank. Howitzers were rolled up on corners and fired at buildings down the street. Anti tank guns fired through knocked out walls.
