Worth a watch: Head of Signal, Meredith Whittaker, on so-called "agentic AI" and the difference between how it's described in the marketing and what access and control it would actually require to work as advertised.

Guy Kawasaki mentions about his cochlea implants, they have been around for a long while (in the UK, NHS funded for at least 15 years). More concerning are Continuous Glucose Monitors (in England all type 1 diabetics have them) where the data goes to a US server beyond the reach of GDPR

Also, the United States absolutely needs something the Europe's GDPR. gdpr-info.eu But Americans don't seem to care about freedom anymore. Ben Franklin talked about those who would trade freedom for security. But someone should've told him about the many more who trade freedom for convenience.

gdpr-info.euGeneral Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – Legal TextThe official PDF of the Regulation (EU) 2016/679 – known as GDPR – its recitals & key issues as a neatly arranged website.

Most people will cave to the convenience. Then network effects and relative (dis)advantage will pull in even those who object to the security concerns. It's analogous to the 'kids and smartphones' problem: I object to my 12-yr old having a phone and IG, but they are left behind if they don't.

Some states are now doing privacy laws, but the US needs a federal one like GDPR. Sensitive data privacy is a human right in the EU. The US is falling behind on this. I don’t know how to get people to understand this.

Very sinister & worrying. It does not look as if we are going to have much choice eventually. How can we resist this very worrying loss of privacy & stop Big Brother from completely taking over our brains & our lives?

Not sure what you mean by root level access? There's no indication that Palantir could access data from cloud accounts of people who don't use their service, is there?

There’s no indication that palantir can do anything like this. The person you’re replying to is either making things up on the internet or just casually dropping what would be the biggest cybersecurity scandal in a decade in a random bsky reply and what’s more likely?

Just occurs to me all those "assistant" things are what rich people have the "help" do. Like no I want to look after myself by myself, order my own food, send my own emails, do my own shopping, I don't want a robot butler.

yeah no I carry my groceries on my back from the supermarket next door I meant what "ai assistants" are constantly offering to do for me, so like I'm fully capable of ordering a pizza.. Get back to me when LLMs can pick up trash.

But if we’re already fully bought into, say, the Google ecosystem, have we not already agreed to access to our emails, calendars, etc? Is there a difference if we agree to an agent having read/write privileges in addition?

Major difference is that while you no privacy towards Google, an agentic ai bot will also make chances and do stuff on your behalf. Mostly (hopefully) exactly as you want it to do. And occasionally it may do something else

This is great predicated on the fact that we don't happily give up our info(security) for convenience regularly, already. And to the ppl pushing this, Peter Thiel and other Darth Vader types. To them, this is a feature, not a bug.

The minute Google announced they were going to force GenAI onto my phone I started looking for a replacement that isn't Android. Unfortunately, that's getting a lot harder to do, especially now that they're baking AI into other OS. We need smart phones that are privacy first.

"Agentic AI" - the marketing buzzword that's about to get a rude awakening from the harsh reality of code. Can't wait to see the marketing teams scrambling to rewrite their copy when the tech can't deliver on its promises

There will come a day when all these tech businesses will essentially own & control all government agencies, and the people will have to choose between accepting surveillance or being prohibited from banking, insurance, healthcare, travel, elections, communication, etc.

I'm sorry, but haven't we come up with many solutions for such flows in the existing systems for decades now? Delegating auth with OAuth; Identity Federation and SSO, combined with user consent and contextual authorization; token exchange and policy based access, etc. What is she on about?

I've been thinking for a long time about how the best use for technology is for things that would be prohibitively difficult without it. There are a lot of things technology does now that people were doing just fine & oft times better without it.

That's not what it does. Like with Suno, the audio-generating AI, it has not given us amazing music. It has just given us the privilege to pay to make our own mediocre audio. It never makes the good thing. They just let you pay to try and make the good thing.

We're listening to this person, why?

"No whatever the rest of the industry does". Unfortunately, Signal = ✅ alignment with questionable funding Australia's "climate evangelist" Andrew Forrest conveniently forgets how he got here from Joe Aston: archive.md/iPRb8 + @aljazeera.com ⬇️

Your profile says #EndFossilFuels. Andrew Forrest has funded Meredith. Read up on the guy:

Do folks have insights/opinions on Fortescue aka Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) run by Dr Andrew Forrest @giantwhispers.bsky.social ? Sure. 🧵 Scott Morrison, previous prime minister of Australia, wearing FMG who has been immortalized in "Hillsong" from TISM: "I masturbate, over bushfires I create".

It’s also a simple task that requires almost no effort that I don’t need AI to do for me. Anything that I can do while sitting on my ass is pretty easy. Can it plan and make me dinner?

first time i’m hearing her speak, but damn this woman is cool. Very clear in her message, explains it simply, in a mildly accusing way.

Great clip, i dont want to use these things but that far resch of data and access is pretty terrifying. Especially when you think about the morals of the tech giants who will hold it.

Who even wants this? Besides all the down sides of energy consumption, privacy, and control - who wants the computer to do all that on autopilot? Which seats to get? Which friends to invite? Who not to invite for this particular event? Any wrong choice ruins the event. No f’ing way.

Privacy is one thing if you wish to give that up, but control of your money is monumentally stupid. EVERY company, no matter their security model, can be hacked. Huge security breaches are news stories which happen weekly. Protect your wallet in every way possible.

I mean, as long as it's done responsibly, it wouldn't need all of these permissions. It can also be fragmented, so you're not trusting a single agent or provider. The example she gave of messaging her friends, it wouldn't necessarily need access to signal; signal would just need to expose an API.

If it needs read access, than it would need control over signal, however, this could be done by a different agent, thus limiting access to data for a single agent.

**wakes up from the dream** Well, nevermind, this requires companies to put users privacy first and consciously try to limit their reach, and.... Well, that's the complete opposite of what they're doing. Soooo, we're fucked

good chance it comes up in the larger interview but i also think it's always worth stressing that i've never seen or heard of this stuff even work properly. you're giving up all that data, and for what?

I could also belabor the points about teens committing suicide because of Ai, the negative environmental impacts, how it's destroying education and critical thinking, enabling copyright infringement and plagiarism (theft), spreading misinformation, mass layoffs, etc. Ai in general is troubling.
