Post

And, uh, some personal news: This is also my last column for The Post. I was offered and accepted a buyout. To answer one possible next question, I'm not sure what's next save taking some time off. If you want, you can enter your email at pbump.net and I'll let you know when I figure it out!

For my column today, I wrote about how Trump leveraged America's collapsing trust in institutions — and how his second term has accelerated that collapse. Gift link: wapo.st/3IzN4QA

Thank you for all you have written. It’s time to leave the Washington Post as it embarrasses itself and gives up all credibility. I am sure you will land somewhere better! A hui hou as we say in Hawai’i.

This is Bezos/WaPo m “obeying in advance.” A once-proud, pro-democracy newspaper that served America now throws itself on the ash-heap of history thanks to its craven owner who worships only money & status.

You joined one thing. It became something else. I mourn what it once was. I’m excited to see what institution you join next. There are a lot of great places vying to fill the void vacated by the Post and others.

You were my favorite part of the Post and the columnist I missed the most when I canceled my subscription last summer. I knew they would try to get rid of you in the current environment. I think you should get snapped up quickly with your great talent and wit. Good luck.

I have been for some time noticing a divergence between the quality of your writing (good!) and that of the post in general (not!) and was wondering how long they’d put up with actual analysis. Their loss, hopefully what’s next for you is great.

Thank you for your honesty, vision, clear writing, and outstanding graphical explanations. I congratulate you on getting out from a paper that increasingly doesn't care about any of that.

I thought it good news. I refuse to subscribe to wp or nyt. I hope like you he finds a plarform. I'm sure he will if he chooses to. Look at Katie Phang's activity since freed from corporate yoke.

He's WAY behind unless he's already chosen and prepared his presence on a credible platform. Judging by word flow of his notice, we might expect him to send resumes and wait for interviews rather than diving into the independent journalism world that others are building - if he wants independence.

Apolgies if you covered this (paywall) but I hope you covered how the Republican party and right-wing media have been undermining the institutions for decades before Trump. Trump is only the symptom. The Republican party is the disease.

Once upon a time, there was a great newspaper. Now it's all down to the boss to define what are personal liberties and free markets. Thanks for your great columns. When I left my last newsroom, ten years ago, I could not imagine how great life outside could be. Looking forward to yours.

I missed your data visualization column most of all when I dropped my WP subscription, and was so glad to find you here on bluesky. We’ll keep seeing you on the radio, I hope!

Buyout vs. payoff-say it ain’t so. Jennifer Rubin, Ann Tenales, etc. Since I cancelled WaPo a few months back, I asked the subscription dept (who refused my refund request) to extend my apologies to you and a few others for my cancellation. Land soon.

your work, both on the analysis and opinion side, has always stood out as being unusually forthright, clear-headed, and accessible. a tremendous loss for the Post, but I'll be happy to see what's next

It's been obvious for a while that you and WaPo aren't a good match. WaPo has obviously lost all credibility as a news source, and it just as obvious you're actually interested in informing the public. Good luck in your future endeavors! I look forward to reading you wherever you resurface!

Gosh. Just saw that this has happened. I am sure that there is a story to tell here. After the Post's 2024 non-endorsement you were given a different role, and I am sure many promises regarding freedom of expression. I guess freedom is not in fashion at the Post any more. Good luck Mr Bump.

Thanks Phil for many years of honest reporting & insightful journalism. I’m sure what ever you decide to do next will be well thought out & productive. @washingtonpost.com is crazy to let you go. You’re smart taking buyout because the formerly great WAPO is a dying entity & you (we) deserve better!

tbh this time I would have been surprised if you didn't take the buyout. Thank you for all the work you put in. The loss of your reporting and analysis leaves a big gap - knowing they don't want it filled makes it even worse. Looking forward to supporting (and benefiting from) what you do next.

Dear god, what is the Post to become? Simething akin to the NY Post I assume…..I wish you well and know you will continue to contribute important information that we need to know.

This falls into the category of sad but not surprising news. Sad for the WaPo readers, sad that you are dealing with this, and not surprising because how could someone like you who prioritizes being honest with people stay there? I'm looking forward to hearing what's next for you!
