Is it time to start the community-built HN/lobsters replacement?

HN filtered/summarized through an AI to remove all the noise does the job for me

Ideally there would be a proliferation of apps with different takes on the concept that eventually settle on standard lexicons like the blogging apps did. Looking for "[thing], but on atproto" is too low resolution for the protocol's potential.

For example: I don't have much use for yet another tech aggregator, but a "Reddit for furries" that only shows stuff in the (hypothetical) standard lexicon with that in its tags would be great.

rando wishcasting: i think neither super fragmented subreddits nor One Big Board for Everyone is right. fragmented = hard to get enough people for good discussion. one big board = only see macro trends not my personal interests. maybe take the global top 50 links, personalized ranking, show top 25?

yeah honestly, let's just replace everything with ATProto and bluesky. It's time we just blast Fable

Actually, I believe we already have a link-publishing board: Bluesky, with votes (likes). What we need isn’t new lexicons but a new interface (a condensed view with ranking)

I don’t really know if I agree. Link aggregators are “I think this link is neat and I want to share that” but a link on Bluesky is… not always going to be that. Like, if Blizzard Support kept replying to posts for support with a portal link… nobody really cares about that as a link to consume.

tl;dr intent matters. this is also why I think using Bluesky images to feed an Instagram-like client won’t ever really work. Intent matters, not every image I post should be on my photos app.

I agree with you ! In fact my local service does the matching between a index of links crawled from tech blogs rss and other aggregators (so already a filtered list) and an index of last bsky posts with links and their likes. So the intent to share is here and there is two quality filters.

Build it on atproto AI coders encouraged Have a “check out my atproto project” submissions Include something like lexicon search and global stats for fun

New queue could get some help from network signals for standard site and tangled repos because, you know, open network.

gotta protomax on it, like, specialcase for tangled, specialcase for profile links, correlate stream place vids about a project to it, posts that link to it, standard site docs about it, all naturally flowing to it's top level entry

Speaking of which, can you spot an Easter egg? bsky.app/profile/spac...

Spent too much time creating the preview image for: foryou.club/atmosphere I pulled the current profile pics of the Bluesky accounts for each of the apps that the cross-lexicon For You feed shows. Not sure what's the deal with @pckt.blog Can you spot an Easter egg?

Thank you for the shout out! I've been working on improvements to the underlying Elixir libraries and released new versions today, so next up is a bunch of UI improvements for Shelf. I want to make new comments and replies much more visible! I love that it's seeing more users!

this is a silly complaint but i think something about the ui for shelf.cafe feels "overengineered" compared to e.g. hn or lobste.rs in that there is almost too much polish- the alternatives have very minimal and inobtrusive styling, wide layouts, etc and i think it creates a good character!

Convenient timing, last week I was just working on a mini Coves as a self-hosted package that runs a single community with an HN/lobsters-style layout plus all the atproto infra. It inherits Coves' moderation and config options and federates back to the main server.

You can picture it very much as a Lobsters or HN that federates to reddit that's accessible to any client! Open protocol what a world!

<: lmk if there’s anything to improve or anything you’d want to see Also make sure to try out the upvote by DM feature (opt-in, enable it in settings)

same lmao it’s mostly been about “how do I recreate this thing in-Atmosphere and what does that enable” it turns out you can enrich the experience of aggregation SO much in this format because of the volume of easily accessible metadata on links at at-uri’s

It has definitely been a lot of fun so far, implementing an AppView that properly ingests from jetstream, ingesting and applying labels, tracking Bluesky post backlinks and rendering threads, bloom filters, oauth client library, etc.

Also stuff that's not like, immediately fun, like making the front page render right with titles and domains and stuff being all kinds of lengths. But that's so satisfying when it works!
