a) there are, like, single digit trans girls in sports in most states (sometimes literally one!), this entire thing is made up so that one girl who wants to play sports with her friends can't do it b) do not, under any circumstances, make policy based on angry sports parents

Gluesenkamp Perez: "At town halls, what I saw was the people who were the most upset had spent the last 12 years driving their girls to sports practice & they view their best shot of their student going to college as an athletic scholarship. So when we rush to moralize we miss some of the nuance."

I feel like every parent who has been to a junior semifinals for any semi competitive sport knows B) in their fucking bones. As does any child who participated in those events and hasn't managed to fully repress the memories yet.

"after talking to local sports parents, I realized the urgent need for Congressional legislation about coaches who don't realize how good some of their players are, because they aren't getting them into the game. we also must take action against referees, who aren't letting the boys play out there"

I can attest to the fact that sports teams parents and coaches in school and club teams are insane! My daughter was a great athlete from the age of 3, cause she LOVED playing but got so turned off by the politics of it all by the time she was a junior. Parents of 5-YO boys believe they are MLB bound

I think hidden in this is a sickness in and of itself, sports as a means for your child to support themselves (and their parents) if they get the opportunity to go pro. Sports should be about fun and growth, not dollars.

Also - if the issue is the perception that scholarships, which are necessary to pay for education, are taken away maybe that is the issue? Why do these parents need a scholarship to send their children to college? Maybe the US could finally make higher education free?

The hs where I teach has had girls on the (male) wrestling team. Several have won regional and state tournaments, whippin the shit out of boys Nobody has ever said a word edgewise This is a VERY rural area in East VA

people who had spent the last 12 years sucking all the fun out of a game that their child plays with skill nowhere near enough to play in college, let alone as a scholarship recipient, and definitely not enough to do as a career you know this of course!!!

The worst place on earth is where two different groups of sports parents sit near each other in the middle of the sideline/behind the backstop. One time I thought I was going to have to fight a Romanian guy from Detroit because a 4’11” 85lb mom on our side was getting mouthy.

Ok but even if there were thousands of them, as a citizen of a country where higher education is free, it doesn't seem to me at all like the trans people are to blame for these problems

My 6 year-old niece plays 'basher ball' which is essentially entry-level softball for our district. Even here, where the goal is to teach little kids *not* to trip over their own feet when running bases, parents are screaming lunatics. These are not serious individuals who should be reasoned with.

It reminds me of how when Kentucky passed a ban on trans athletes, the only person affected was a 13 year old kid who had started a field hockey team at her school. bsky.app/profile/clay...

Republicans want to talk about “men in women’s sports?” Dems should talk about Kentucky and how all they did was hurt a 13-year old kid while her young teammates showed that they aren’t constrained by the same bigotry that has led to so much hatred. Change the conversation. bsky.app/profile/gbbr...

The best response to a parent who says their kid needs an athletic scholarship to go to college is to say 1) no they don't and 2) it's most likely not going to happen, anyway, and 2) let's work on making college more affordable, then.

Also 3) consider what you're sinking into the sport, versus tossing the money into savings/investments and pointing the kid at more affordable or free ways to get the same positive outcomes.

It feels like a huge industry has formed around youth coaching, so now we get to see achievement in sports largely follow the same curve as other things... rich kids get the best resources and coaching so they achieve at a greater rate. Yay.

That's the same all over the world... sports tech is expensive, the specially designed running shoes with the fancy soles, the aerodynamically designed tennis rackets etc, Parents with the money/time to take the kids to meets and training every day, plus coaching fees. The US just went one bigger.

And follow it up with asking the kid how they feel about their pursuit of an athletic scholarship: Often times the kid is miserable because they’re ready to pursue new interests or can’t attend the school they want because of pressure from the parents to only focus on the sport!

There's an article I once read where apparently 1 in 9 parents with children involved in sports believe their kids are going to go pro or make the Olympics and I think it explains a great deal about how the trans sports panic came to be.

Sports cost money, put that money into their college fund or use it on tutors to help them achieve an academic scholarship. Fin!

"So, how many trans athletes does his Order actually affect? Based on available data, along with Teen Vogue’s own reporting, Trump’s Order likely targets fewer than 160 of the more than 8 million student athletes in the country." -Teen Vogue www.teenvogue.com/story/trumps...

teenvogue.comTrump's Order on Trans Athletes Likely Targets 160 or Fewer Teens NationwideTeen Vogue reached out to each state to see how many teens Trump's trans sports ban really impacts. It's not many.

Also... IDK, maybe college should be free so we don't have to commit 800 bajillion hours while praying that your kid is exceptional at sports in order to afford it? Pick your battles people...

"after holding a town hall, I believe my top priority is the passage of an official congressional declaration that on june 27th little jamie DID get fouled on a last second three point shot and the result of the game should be overturned on the basis that she would have made her free throws"

"after talking to local sports parents, I realized the urgent need for Congressional legislation about coaches who don't realize how good some of their players are, because they aren't getting them into the game. we also must take action against referees, who aren't letting the boys play out there"

also, as a lot of folks are correctly pointing out, there is a c) here: your kid almost certainly isn't good enough for an athletic scholarship anyway and they damn sure aren't going to make a career out of it

Parents who didn't realize they should've switched their child over to debate team at least 10 years ago and somehow that's a transgender kid's fault.

Didn’t check to see who was pointing it out or what points were made but …. If you don’t KNOW that your kid can get a scholarship, they probably can’t. Exceptions exist and people improve but e.g. all the champion-level swimmers in my school were recognizable as such freshman year.

I did some light googling and I was wildly off there, but assuming the numbers I found were right (and that there's an equal number of men and women's scholarships) you're still looking at only 1,500-1,800 slots for women in each state

Finally find me ONE SINGLE instance of someone transitioning earning a scholarship as a Trans woman and then detransitioning after reopening these glorified rewards. IT DOES NOT EXIST. I suspect the number of Trans women who were ever offered a sports based scholarship to be single digits nationwide

I think it isn't so much the scholarships but preferential treatment in admissions for recruited athletes, even at schools that don't offer athletic scholarships (fancy private colleges, Ivies, etc), which is a fucked up thing in and of itself

When I was in high school, there was an extremely talented kid named Bubba Starling at a rival school who was head and shoulders above the competition in three different sports. Absolute genetic freak. Like, every time he touched the football, he'd run it 70 yds to the end zone for a touchdown (1/2)

Anyways, the Royals drafted him, and he spent a decade in the minor leagues before retiring Turns out that getting to the pros is damn near impossible to do even if you are a top 0.1% athlete at your sport 🤷‍♀️

BPJ didn’t have the best put of the day at the meet when she won state. Another girl out threw her by a foot. The runner up has a better PB than her. BPJs throw was almost 20ft short of the WV record for a high school girl. She would have lost by 15ft in every division if she was in Texas.

BPJ was competing. And managed to do an effort that was good enough on the day to win the meet. For that she gets to never compete with her friends ever again. What are we doing here?

There's also a d), being that, almost by definition, kids who lose an athletic scholarship lose them to better athletes. It doesn't make sense to implement a policy designed to ban someone for simply being a better athlete.

When I was teaching, it was deeply disheartening to discover how many kids actually had "become pro athlete" as their life plan, with no fallback. For a lot of kids, it was their own dream, but for some, it was the parents pushing.

One father was convinced his son was going to be a starting QB at USC. This was a sophomore who was 5'3", 150 lbs and in my "let's get you some extra help with English" class. Dude, your son will be lucky to attend community college. Great kid. Loves metalworking. Let him do that.

Especially any kind of non-team sport with a time/distance scoring. If your kid is 7 seconds off pace of a competitive 400m time, they're getting a scholarship whether they win or finish tied for 5th with a trans girl.

That's what's crazy. Even if you believe we need to have a discussion about trans-eligibility in sports, you're talking about like .001% of athletes. Republicans act like this is the most critical issue in all of America.

OMG b). I live in serious high school sports country and the high school radio station that I listen too (which is excellent btw) regularly runs PSAs that basically tell parents to chill the fuck out.

The reason is to serve as a wedge to start pulling apart mainstream support for trans rights and acceptance. Calling them all groomers didn’t work, scaring parents about sports did. Now trans people have fewer rights and the means to continue persecution is approved. The reality never mattered.

Unfortunately, we do. The Florida AG and a couple of Congressional assholes are trying to force IDTANA to ban trans women and girls from competing with other girls at this years Nationals. 😡 I don’t think CLRG or IDTANA will go along with the bullshit, but it’s appalling, either way.

I'm out of the loop on CLRG shenanigans these days. My daughter is now a professional dancer, no longer competing. The FL AG should keep its fucking nose out of Irish dancing business. If trans girls can do toe stands and a pretty slip jig, they deserve to compete however they want.

My kids are both retired, but I started competing in the adult category, so I’m still pretty involved, although not on the same level. My eldest daughter is also trans, although she was done competing by the time she came out, so we never had to deal with that particular brand of bullshit.

But also even if it were literal millions of trans girls it would still be fucked to up to try and eradicate them from society. Like I agree that how overblown it is makes it ridiculous on the face but also it would still be ridiculous and cruel if their numbers were accurate.
