There have been 54 school (k-12, anotherr 27 college) shootings this year. How many of us can name even a dozen of them? That's a warning signal. A billionaire who makes his living by denying medical care, and can afford elaborate security? That's the consequences of his actions.

i'll start giving a shit about this when the # of CEOs gunned down in the street equal or exceed the # of children who have been murdered at school. when it exceeds the # of people shot by cops for little-to-no reason. when it exceeds the # who died because medical treatment was too expensive.

There’s a reason less divided countries around the world have landed on universal healthcare. Business-run healthcare has too many conflicts with the common good.

I wonder if there's a deeper system of violence that explains why people would feel the need to shoot CEOs Like wouldn't it be fucked up of the whole system was built on violence and death and you're just ignoring that to highlight the one death that forces you to confront that

Wouldn't it be nice if we got these types of in-depth articles about the fuckery that is private insurance, why Uncle Sam should make the entire system illegal and take over healthcare and provide deep introspection of the history and psychoanalysis of people like Obama who perpetuate such misery?

Or maybe those inured with the profit-over-people mantra of today's ultra wealthy are just catching a glimpse of what "reap/sow", "FAFO", "karma" looks like.

I see this a little differently than most commenters. What I take from the piece is, this event isn't a wakeup call for the part of society that's already seen the warning signs. They're the "choir" in this instance. This is a strike at late-stage capitalism and greed, not just 2A and gun violence.

Holy fuck, you're like a decade to late with this take. This wasn't a "blaring warning", that came years ago written in the blood of children. This was the fading of the last bell ring, heard clap in every board room around the world. This is the quiet part as the echo fades and the holiday comes.

If you didn’t feel this way after Sandy Hook I am not sure you are truly human. All those children slaughtered and now one guy—one single white rich dude who literally made people suffer for a living—NOW it’s a problem. Look in the mirror if you want to see what’s wrong with civilization.

People oppressed by a system that is openly hostile towards them with leaders who claim to represent them yet actively feed the system of oppression tend to lash out eventually. The guillotine has fallen many times throughout history and it repeats itself because the gluttons don’t learn

Hey Adrienne, we don’t give a fuck about billionaires that profit off our misery. We do care about elected officials looking the other way when our kids get killed at school, however. Why don’t you look into that instead? Fuckwit…

Not the “healthcare” industry trying to do everything to not cover you. Murder in mass by PDF > Mass murder getting killed in the street. Corporate lobbyists have taken any civility out of our county.

The alarm bells should’ve started to ring when corporations and CEOs were denying basic healthcare so they could make an extra 1-2% profit. Healthcare companies are both directly & indirectly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans and have essentially engaged in “legal” murder.

Joseph Rosenbaum, unarmed, threw a plastic bag at him and in return was shot four times. Anthony Huber was also unarme. He hit the little fucker on the head with a skateboard.

You missed an important part. Rosenbaum continued to chase Rittenhouse until he was cornered by cars and lunged for his gun. That is why he shot him in self defence (for less than a second). Huber then repeatedly beat him in the head with a skateboard (which can cause death). Self defence.

“Certainly school children, the elderly, people at concerts, movies, supermarkets, church, etc, can defend themselves but who’ll think of the CEO’s?! Won’t someone protect our rich from gun violence?!”

You are so close and yet so far the Atlantic. The problem is that the institutions meant to protect us have been bought out by massive corporations who twist it to their end at the expense of us the people. Real action needs to be taken, and these institutions have proven largely impotent.

You want trust in institutions to improve drastically? Throw out civility and fix the system by any means necessary. All this “institutions above humans” politics does is demonstrate to the people you are trying to influence that they are disposable and less important than decorum.

Uvalde Sandy Hook Parkland Las Vegas Colorado Orlando George Floyd Breanna Taylor Sandra Bland But *this* singular death is what an American publication considers a warning sign? Give me a break.

My brothers and sisters in Christ at The Atlantic! You have spent a decade telling us affordable medical care is an "indulgent fantasy," so now we indulge in another kind of fantasy. This is what you worked so hard for! Rejoice in the fruits of your long labors!

Yeah we are though. We should absolutely be above killing someone for political reasons, but that goes hand in hand with building a healthy society. Not having a just universal healthcare system is a failing. The wealth gap is failing. Prioritizing growth vs sustainability is a failing.

You are correct. US capitalism is responsible for millions of deaths and destabilization of countries around the world over the last two centuries. And the American elite turns a blind eye to this and is shocked when one of their own gets what he deserves

The wealth-hoarding class & talking heads who fellate them have assumed that claiming a monopoly on violence gives them impunity to lie, steal & kill at will. They are shocked (shocked I tell you) when anyone refuses to play the game they've created. Class war is binary & wealth isn't a shield.

Rodney King video. Biden calling black men “super predators.” The govt sponsored crack epidemic. Black Wall Street. The Tuskegee study. George Floyd. Nobody deserves to die like the CEO did, but don’t act like America was some utopia. This place has been hell for large groups of people since day 1.

When you start reporting on how health insurance CEOs are *personally* responsible for making decisions that end peoples lives unnecessarily, and acknowledge that doing so is murder, then I will give a shit what you think about CEOs being murdered. Until then, GTFO.

The CEOs of a health insurance companies are one and all mass murderers whom are exempt from the law and will never face consequences for the pain and suffering they inflict every day upon their captive "customers" on an unimaginable scale.

That CEO was responsible for a lot of bloodshed. He led an insurance organization with the highest rate of denied claims. As a case manager, I personally witnessed his organization, refusing very appropriate and much needed care. They place lives in jeopardy. He didn’t care if people died.

I’m pretty sure that happened when Kyle Rittenhouse went out to murder Black folks and Daniel Penny murdered a homeless man because he was being weird. The murder of the C.E.O. makes more sense.

A society where people brutalize one another.

NEW: Another shocking story by @anniewaldman.bsky.social about UnitedHealthcare's secret internal cost-cutting campaign that targets the treatment of children with autism, treatment that the company itself acknowledged as the "evidence-based gold standard": www.propublica.org/article/unit...

Who's too inured? "On the 2021 phone call, which was recorded by the company, a nurse told her colleague that a doctor contracted by United to review the case had concluded that McNaughton’s treatment was 'not medically necessary.' Her colleague reacted to the news with a long laugh."

propublica.orgUnitedHealthcare tried to deny coverage to a chronically ill patient. He fought back, exposing the insurer’s inner workings. After a college student finally found a treatment that worked, the insurance giant decided it wouldn’t pay for the costly drugs. His fight to get coverage exposed the insurer’s hidden procedures for r...

the breakdown of civilization started when it became "meh" each time children were mowed down in their schools. When our society refused to acknowledge those "brazen murders" that's when it all fell to shit. Stop and consider that first.

I don't get the cheering. I certainly get the apathy for the brazen murder of a guy who ran a company that inflicted so much pain on so many. And, this is not a warning signal anymore than the election of trump (again), or the next school shooting, or the next extrajudicial killing of a minority.

The opioid epidemic has killed more than a quarter of a million Americans since 2018. The Sacklers knew what they were feeding, didn't care, and aren't even mildly inconvenienced by the courts now. People cheer because someone stopped a mass-murderer that we KNOW wasn't going to be stopped otherwise

"In recent days, journalists and other observers have worked to uncover the motivations of the accused killer." Oh, sweet Jesus. 🤦 HE LITERALLY SPELLS IT OUT IN HIS MANIFESTO. "Nobody knows why everyone's shoes are wet!" claims executive editor in the middle of a hurricane.

It's still burying the lede if you mention the actual reason later in the article, btw, because most of it's pay-walled, which, as the executive editor, you should already know. Deeply, DEEPLY embarrassing.

"periods of heightened violence tend to coincide with social and political reordering generally—moments when party or group identities are in flux" Oh my god. You cannot be this dense 🤦. This is so embarrassing. It's wealth inequality. It's the most common reason for cross-partisan violence.

Republicans have created a nation of mass shooters that they treat like rockstars when they shoot up the left for a reason. Encouragement results in copycats. This is the elites freaking the fuck out that there was a natural outpouring of encouragement and they are trying to tamp it down.

The reaction of so many people to this murder is a symbol of how upset people are at being taken advantage of by the healthcare industry. What we have is too expensive, but they still want to take it away from us. We all worry about that every day. Are the privileged worried? They should be.

The health insurance industry is not the health care industry. Health care has its problems too but let's not credit these parasites with providing actual medical care.

How about the election of a corrupt thug tearing apart democracy and announcing dudes like billionaire Musk and Vivek working to reduce Social Security, Medicare and eliminating insurance from millions who count in the ACA! That’s the freaking last straw as far as I’m concerned!

nah. this ship sailed LONG ago, after 100s of random, multiple shootings where our do-nothing congress, owned by lobbyists, did nothing. the pearl-clutching from our center-right media, over this targeted killing, is informative, because it shows how selectively outraged & out of touch you are.

No. What is numbing is corporate greed. Instead of universal healthcare it’s denial of care to boost profits. “UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty says that the company will continue the legacy of Brian Thompson and will combat 'unnecessary' care for sustainability reasons.”

Exactly this. For once it seemed a death at another's hands *wasn't* entirely unjust and unfair. For ONCE a violent and sudden death occurred and we all looked at each other and went 'oh that guy was actually one of the bad guys in all of this. That one we take'.

Their commitment is to their stockholders. Not their dues paying subscribers. There’s actual negligent homicide among for- profit medical insurance carriers.

considering the amount of homeless and continued children slaughters, before that the racial and sexist majority, before that the enslavement of human beings, before that the genocide of natives. maybe a little, yeah.

ORRRRRRR….you could do your job & discover that people are also angry about deaths for profit? Hmm…seems as a journalist you could see the difference between cheering a death & cheering a statement Murder is wrong-but the message was heard Guess you didn’t hear it in every school shooting either?

Stop clutching your pearls. This is an expression of the threat the masses have always implied to elites that push too far in their exploitation. Tarring and feathering is a violent act, and that gets celebrated in classrooms.

A decade of "fuck your feelings", 40 years of trickle down fantasy robbing the middle class to funnel riches to the insatiably greedy, a "healthcare" system that values profit margins above human life - The Atlantic can fuck off with this tone policing. Violence is already baked into daily life.

This entire state of OUR union has been engineered over the period from when "The Gipper", Ronald Reagan was elected president defeating President Jimmy Carter. The Heritage Foundation was invented in 1973 Make America Great Again was born. Project 2025 is the hybrid stepchild Here we are

weird framing this as an attack on democracy when what happened was the killing of a business leader by a single private citizen, unless y’all consider this country’s business leadership as the deciders of the United States’ democracy

Unbelievably tone deaf, given the blasé response to the many mass shootings in this country in the last several years which Republicans responded to with “thoughts and prayers”.

I have to agree with the people who are saying, in a nutshell, that Luigi Mangione murdered a mass murderer. Those people with cancer and heart disease whose insurance claims were denied when they shouldn't have been? Nothing good happened to them. If corporations are people, why are they allowed

Yes. I genuinely think we are headed towards a revolution if income inequality - and the corporate looting of nations and people - doesn't ease soon. I'd rather things didn't go that far, but when the only other choice is dying, people will make their choice.

"Society too inured to bloodshed" they said in an article that proves the organization that published it is totally inured to the mass death CAUSED by insurance companies. Yes. CAUSED. They are nothing but parasitic third-party middle-men gatekeeping for oligarchy. You are part of the problem.

The oligarchy must be dismantled forthwith or this process continues unabated. Period. The warning signs have been replete for decades while the Zombie Fourth Estate participated in and facilitated it all in service to the oligarchs who own it...and alarm bells have been ringing the entire time.

Fucking take this shit down, it's disgraceful. People get brazenly gunned down in gun-violence every. goddamn. day. We have streamlined the news cycle for mass shooting in schools. ONE fuck-knuckle of a CEO gets shot and suddenly we ALL have to drop what we're doing to protect them? Eat me.
