Horror is cathartic. Always has been. Have you taken a look outside recently? There's your answer. Who even is this author? Never heard of them. Being "squeamish" is no excuse to pretend to be an expert but ignore the documented history of the horror genre and why it exists and succeeds.

This article implies it’s the filmmakers duty to make a film that gets the audience to go to the theater. Which is exactly what’s happening. Sheep Detectives is right there! It’s great, go see that!

Did you know that you can hire a horror critic who knows about the horror genre to write reviews of horror movies and discuss horror concepts? Ain’t no law ‘gainst it or anything.

Looking at the article it looks like the real question they are asking (which I'm not sure they are aware of) is "why is horror so much better than other genre's right now at allowing new talented filmmakers to enter into the industry?" They seem disappointed that other genres aren't stepping up

Can the Guardian for once not let a cultural phenomenon exist without commissioning some brain dead hack to write a worthless piece of contrarianism about it?

Mellies made horror movies. The biggest movies from the 20s and 30s were either comedies or horror. Horror movies were the backbone of independent film from the 50s to the 80s. Horror has been mainstream since Silence of the Lambs won all the Oscars. What are you people even talking about?

Even if I don't live in Los Angeles or London, where there are more than 100+ other movies playing in various theaters around town, there's still often 8-12 other films playing at my local megaplex. I hate horror films and I can always find something else to watch. You're bad at rage bait.

I read the article. You could write this same article ALMOST word for word about: romantic comedies, buddy cop movies, and nearly any other genre. The writer is only bitching because they don't like horror so they don't want it to be popular.

Utterly bizzare article. Horror has been one of the most consistent money making genres for longer than Ive been alive, and that have given life to so many talented creatives in the industry. If you don't like it go support the films in other genres.

comedy's hollywood takeover is an exciting moment – but won't someone think of the pessimistic drama's hollywood takeover is an exciting moment – but won't someone think of the light-hearted action's hollywood takeover is an exciting moment – but won't someone think of the placid

if you don´t like a genre don´t watch and read anything in that genre, ok? ok. go watch something you like instead, and if there is nothing, time to work on your ability to be uncomfortable for more than two seconds, ok? ok. nice rage bait btw

There are many kinds of horror movies. They are not all slashers or movies where someone is tortured. Even horror fans have their preferences. There are atmospheric horror movies where blood is never shed that are excellent, quite scary, and tell an excellent story.

People want good stories told well. That’s all we want. If horror is not for you, don’t watch it. Hollywood did this to themselves by insisting on making and remaking what they considered safe movies and sequels. Horror movies have always been creative and willing to take chances. They still do.

I think squeamishness is down to them, and if they choose not to engage in the genre because it makes them feel things they either can't or don't wish to process, okay. When I can't handle what's happening, I don't make the people doing it stop. I move! It's what adults living in a society do.

Cinema has *always* been about horror. Right the way back to Pre-Cinema with phantasmagoria and magic lantern shows. It’s scary spectacle. What we now see (often if not always) is ‘sophisticated’ horror. Also, modern horror is a fairly broad church. Audiences can still learn stuff from horror films.

Why did they hav tuh gower and put all that scuhree stuff like government oppresshun and doomed love in Signawris, guv? It done hurt me Feelins! - apparently decently compensated British media critic, in between handfuls of tasty school unsafe glue

Oh yeah, I forgot how people are forced to watch every horror movie that comes out, regardless of their interest in it. If you're a film reviewer for a publication of some kind, yeah, maybe you have to see some movies you normally wouldn't want to see. But you get paid to watch movies, shut up.

Backrooms has so little actual gore in it compared most horror movies. And there's a version without gore, its called exit 8! Saw was called "torture porn" and it was a bigger, longer movie staple than anything horror right now. This is dumb. I think obsession has more gore of its cat alone

When I was younger I was the squeamish person. Then I realized that fiction literally cannot hurt me, so I started watching horror in order to desensitize myself to fake fear and get rid of my irrational anxiety. And it worked! At least WRT fiction. I'm still irrationally anxious about other stuff.

Hey, high five! 🖐️ That was me too, I got tired of being affected so much by gore, so I forced myself to watch horror movies until I got over it. Now I love horror and can appreciate it clearly (while still being an anxious mess otherwise)
