I say this because one time in college our final was an essay and we decided to have a potluck for the last day and like eight people brought plates, three brought ice, four brought cups, two people brought utensils, and only ONE brought food and it was a single bag of chips. It was glorious.

A clementine, almond flour cake with chocolate glaze. Sephardic inspired recipe from the NYT. I’m not GF, most of the folks who have experienced it are not GF, yet a whole circle of folks now call it THE cake.

My mom's Milky Way cake. The recipe takes six full-sized Milky Way bars. I warn people to take a small piece because it's very rich, but they never believe me. Either that, or pigs in blankets.

Usually bacon-wrapped ribs. Maybe my bacon cheese quick bread. Or bacon chocolate chips. Or dozens of bite-sized Victorian sponges. A couple of smoked pork butts.a large tray of greens cooked with with pig jowls. It all depends on the occasion and the audience. I've done all of those before.

I make completely inoffensive pasta salad, just oil and red wine vinegar and veggies with possibly light herbs; I can make it a little stronger with balsamic, more herbs, and mozzarella so it's kinda a caprese I won't impress anyone but I probably won't disappoint anyone

Queso or Buffalo chicken dip (depending on where we are), and a bag of homemade scoops-style chips dusted in Julio's seasoning.

Creamy chicken noodle soup and some kind of miniature pie - either cherry made with puff pastry in a cupcake tin or seasoned apple slices rolled up in homemade pie crust.

Dinner: shredded poached chicken thighs mixed in wild and long grain rice and peas. (Vegetarian version: swap the chicken for mushrooms) Brunch: Fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, and polish sausage all cooked together. Optional winter add-on: Hot spiced cider (in a crock pot)

My cousin gave me a recipe for a buffalo chicken pasta salad (I usually hate pasta salad) with Frank’s, ranch, mayo, chicken, cherry tomatoes, peas, and it’s so freaking good on radiatori - my new favorite pasta shape

Deviled eggs most of the year. And not bland ones - tangy with the glue of the family sweet pickle brine and a lot of fresh grated horseradish in addition to hot sauce, Coleman’s dry, etc. In summer, a big old plate of sliced home grown tomatoes.

Scratch pork tamales. I make about 100 every year for Friendsgiving. Somewhere along the way this Native learned to make better tamales than frybread.

Beyond the obvious, their virtues are thus: - nobody hates potatoes - they look way harder to make than they are - they're easy to make in huge batches - they keep well and are great the next day - you can batch them in different flavors

Said s’mores bars:

Please allow me to share this recipe for S’mores bars just in case you need a quick amazing dessert to bring to a place or keep at home. I use the full 16oz large box of golden grahams just fine without adjusting the recipe. https://pinchofyum.com/golden-grahams-smores-bars

To really show off, I’m making mini pavlovas with homemade blackberry jam and whipped cream. On the savory side, kale salad with almonds and Parmesan dressed in a lemon/garlic dressing.

1. Rosemary chicken drumsticks. Take a whole bunch of chicken drumsticks, dress them with salt, pepper, and finely chopped fresh rosemary, then brown them in batches in a whole stick of butter over medium-low heat in a big skillet. When browned, put in the oven at 275 for like 25 minutes to finish.

2. Frozen berry cobbler. Dump a whole bunch of frozen mixed berries into a pyrex baking dish, and make a crumble topping from brown sugar, butter, flour, and a little salt. Spread the topping over the top of the berries and bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until browned and bubbly.

the drumsticks are great for a potluck because they're a main that's good cold that you can eat from a plate with one hand while standing up. the cobbler is great because it takes no more time to make it than to think about making it and it's fucking delicious.

I am not much of a cook, so I usually buy soda/beer or a bottle of wine depending on the hosts. I do wish I had my mother's potato salad recipe; everyone loved her salad.

Tourtière if I know I'll be able to warm it up in an oven, otherwise Cincinnati chili - both things that I can make accurately enough and I know many people will never have tried before. Also deviled eggs and Guy Fieri-flavored Waterloo, but those are defensive just to make sure I have some

My in-laws are very Slavic and fuckin' love when I make rice krispy treats (with browned butter) because it's SO foreign and American and delicious. (I had them for the first time after the age of 18, when a restaurant I worked at made them, but that's bc my mom's a hippy.)

I have a garlicky pasta salad of my own invention that has been reliable for years. Though I 'd consider supplementing with this kimchi potato salad that has been super popular with a surprisingly wide range of people. (I hate traditional eggy potato salad.)
