I fucking hate Uber and Airbnb. They're using billions to destroy infrastructure and our hotel and transit systems, and are literally making worse alternatives. Who even uses them in cities like mine?! New Yorkers don't take cabs. We walk.

I know buses aren't cool, but the reason that tech bros keep inventing buses is that buses are actually really, really super efficient at getting people moving around a city. Weird, I know. Definitely worthy of being reinvented every few years. Now, if only we could fund the systems we already have.

You should probably mention in the article that buses have existed for a long time but people with money don't like being around poorer people/other races and that's the exact market for this

Why does tech always think they’re having a Eureka! moment when it’s all just less efficient versions of busses and trains? These people are definitely something, but genius isn’t it.

Man, ever since Panzer left TechCrunch has been an utter joke. Just re-writing press releases and glazing tech bros 🤢🤢🤢 As for this bit of dumbassery, I’ll stick with the bus

The tech bros' ability to "invent" a new technology that's literally as old as modern cities and pretend it's revolutionary never ceases to amaze me.

Honestly, I am not sure regular UBER/LYFT users will want to use this as it might take 2 minutes longer than a UBER all on your own. They can afford the UBER fare.

man i sure wish there was an already-existing, shorter word for a large shuttle that drives on the road and picks up/drops people off along a fixed-route. shame we don’t already have a word for that :/ that’s real innovation

The business model is to find the routes that a regional bus service finds profitable, and to set up camp there, to steal revenues from the public service. Meanwhile the regional service has to maintain the less profitable routes for coverage reasons at a loss. Dollar Vans do this in NYC.

Like all modern tech, it's disruption, I.E. taking something that works now, and wedging yourself in there and breaking it with VC subsidies until you are the only option left

Spoiler: As long as there are at least 2-3 passengers per trip, there is no such thing as "not busy enough to support a full-sized bus." And even if there WERE, public transit includes things like... VANS. Which are Like Buses, But Smaller, and still cheaper and less exploitative than this shit.

Singapore, 1960s. Used to use 'pick-up taxis', beaten up old Mercs you could flag down on a shared ride basis, to get into the city, often sharing with locals plus livestock. Ain't nothng new under the sun. Except for maybe the livestock.
