we have an idea for communities in the app that we're calling "spaces" — places where people can gather around shared interests or social groups. here's a peek at some early prototypes. these are explorations, not polished or final. looking for feedback, esp from community builders 👀

the bsky team is working on various ideas for creating smaller social spaces in the app. which use case is most interesting to you? 1. posting into "topics" that organize public posts 2. posting into "communities" or "groups" that can be public or private 3. posting directly to your followers only

I do something similar to this with custom handles under a shared domain, then a custom feed from members with the handle Id love to see that unified in some way. An easy way to have a space with a base domain then anyone added gets to pick a sub handle. Would simply my life greatly

My biggest worry is that this is gonna end up devolving into the unmoderated mess that Amino became. I’d love to see the full scope of mod tools available to people and the oversight that would be in place overall! (I think ‘Spaces’ as a name is fine, but I also think it lacks ✨pizazz✨)

Despite them being a pretty new feature I actually spend time in the communities on tumblr! Some ppl might not care for this idea but I sure dont mind it!

I like it but can we change the name to not get it confused with atproto spaces? I feel like "Communities" work just fine and it's direct to the point.

I don't think the name sucks, tbh. One of the better if not the best options. I'd just like to know if this is a Bluesky thing or based on the emerging group standards, so I can maybe integrate this into @colibri.social?

Please just give us the ability lock our accounts and remove followers. Since bsky doesn't seam interested in dealing with their bot and spam problem, at least let me remove them myself.

echo the general concern around overlapping naming with atproto spaces, if only because it makes it harder to communicate the concept to users later in other parts of the atmosphere

I think there absolutely needs to be a feed that interleaves your following feed with some of the posts from the spaces you're in! I'm not sure in what form this should manifest but I do think it is essential to maintain engagement with communities overtime

understand if this doesn't make it to a v1 but I'd definitely like to see a way for communities to pin feeds and labelers (potentially other entities on the atmosphere?)

I think using the same name at AT Proto Spaces is a really bad idea that's going to continue to deepen the confusion between Bluesky and the Protocol using it here then puts the burden on every other app using AT Proto Spaces to explain why them using Spaces isn't the same thing as Bluesky Spaces

IMO, it's also fine to rename AT Proto Spaces to solve this. It'll just *really* suck for other apps if they're using the same name.

Not helpful but. I don't understand how to get a post seen on this site. I don't know how to get it into Discover or For You for those who are interested in photography or retro gaming or whatev. I spend an hour on something: 1 like. Eventually I'm leaving. Solve for that! Follow hash tags maybe?

OTOH the closer we can get to Reddit-style forums with user posts and comments underneath, the better, esp. now that Reddit has ruined their own concept with algorithms, a horrendous mobile-friendly website, and a war crime of a mobile app. So maybe this does solve for something important too.

I expect the value I could gain from moving communities from other platforms to here would be much smaller than the loss of interesting content that will be locked away in private spaces.

I follow (using lists) a lot of different areas of interest (eg economists, urban planners, folks from my home country, etc.). I wouldn't want to request to join most of them as spaces. The result is that a lot of what brings me to bsky would be locked away.

One thing I'm not quite clear on, is space membership static? If I have a followers space will it have to be updated every time I get a new follower? Is there some kind of predicate system?

in this concept, the idea is that you would decide who can join without your manual approval. you could set that to your followers, but they would need to actively choose to join the space.

Let the people running a space set the rules and boot troublemakers. If they have to beg you every time somebody wrecks the conversation, you've handed them a fucking headache and called it a community.

can we use it? I am interested in community spaces and would be down to do some beta testing if yr looking for that sorta thing

it depends... some kinda collective music production and asynchronous music collaboration using an ATproto native DAW thing or a VCV rack and it would be useful for people to control access to their music maybe a poem sharing app widget thats been waiting for private spaces but maybe not beta test

Perhaps the trending topics could become temporary spaces? Maybe things have changed the last few months but trending topics are useful briefly and then fizzle out immediately. As a space they could have ranked replies?

I think this is a slight miss. Naming the product feature Spaces when there’s a protocol feature called spaces is going to confuse the heck out of people when other Atmosphere apps talk about using protocol spaces later. Maybe consider a different name to avoid ecosystem confusion later?

The idea is fine, but it won't work without serious moderation capabilities - both server-side and in the group itself. Your current track record with that is... not good, if I'm being honest.

Not sure if I am in favor of that idea or not. I don't like FB groups when mob rule takes over. And I like the idea of no walls so people can easily meet others of interests that differ from their own. Sone folks tend to be ruthless people and just stick to the known and do not explore.

y'all should figure out a different name because i don't think it's good for there to be atproto spaces and bluesky spaces

agree with people saying spaces might be a confusing name, especially when theres the atproto spaces feature coming out soon maybe call them spheres or something? and i think it would be cool to integrate some longer form stuff via standard.site

keep the name spaces. atproto spaces is like saying 'a website' and bsky spaces is like 'the bsky site'. every app creating its own nickname for a technical concept would suck, we should call it what it is

I like this as a potential replacement for some physician Facebook groups that I am in which are private to allow for candid discussion. Would be good to be publicly discoverable but then moderator to approve access. Would also be nice to have ability for longer posts.

you can create a space with a few taps. give it a name, choose who can join, and you're in. after creating it, you can customize further — choose a cover image, an accent color, and more.

you choose the handle for your space, like "yourspace.bsky.space" this doubles as a link you can send to invite people to your space. it comes with a unique landing page. would you want to customize this page? what else would you want to see here?

Would definitely want to customize this. At least like a user profile bio. Some things I’d want to see: - Who is in it, especially mutuals - who invited me - how long has it existed - what’s the attrition rate (ie do a lot of people leave?) - what is it about - does the group have other websites

inside a space, you post like you do on Bluesky: short posts with photos, links, and replies, visible only to members or people who can join the space. are Bluesky-style posts what you want inside spaces? or something different like long-form posts, forum-style (non-branching) threads, or chat?

Something like skeets or Reddit threads. Chat could be great and I’d like it, but the bar is doing something better than discord so imo not worth it until there’s a clear picture of what that is.

I mean if you do decide to have unlimited character posts in spaces then I don't really see a reason why you shouldn't also remove the character limit for public posts as well (preferably with some kinda text formatting), ya know for some consistency

for post reactions, we're considering two options: classic likes (like on regular Bluesky posts) and emoji reactions (like in group chats). with emoji reactions, you choose which ones are suggested by default. which reaction type would you prefer? or is there something else you'd want instead?

Forum threads cultivated longer duration discussion, something I miss on the internet. I think the main thing that enabled this was persistence - active discussions floated at the top of the page, encouraging more engagement. This could really distinguish spaces from feeds.

I think rather than creating different post options like long-form or forum style, allowing spaces to import non-native Bluesky records from other apps would be great. Like if someone posts from @pckt.blog it doesn't require you to post about it on Bluesky for it to appear on the timeline.

I feel forum-style threads are more "spacey" and should be chosen. I would like to think on spaces as something like sub-reddits or fb groups. bsky-style posts on spaces would feel too much like the main thing, and chat would feel too much like group DMs.

I would love to see this provide both public and private spaces - basically let me make a public/private forum/subreddit here. Sometimes what's useful is having a moderation space in a public sphere, right?

I would say the more customizable the better! Certainly visually so it feels like our own, but also being able to customize how information is laid out would be great. For instance you could have quick updates on a group’s news or introductory info at the top.

I think something as descriptive and natural as possible would be the best, for example, Communities? Clubs? Circles? something like that

Community is as natural of a word as you can get, so people will know exactly what it's for when it gets added. I'd guess more people would use it then instead of seeing it as bloat.

Ideally it wouldn't conflict with ATProto Groups or whatever it ends up being called

imperfect and maybe connotes protection that doesn't exist but gives you a kind of "this is our place, for us!" tree-fort angle i think works with the idea and, critically, it hasn't already been used a dozen times in a dozen different ways by social media

what about rooms? thinking something like bookstores or libraries that partition to different sections some structured way of populating the atmosphere mapping

Wanted to take a peek at @semble.so and didn't knew where to start. I built this as a static explorer of all the links in there. sites.wisp.place/davidgasquez... Love AT Protocol for letting me build the UI I want! 😍

Organizing around topics is fine. It works well at other sites I frequent. However, I suggest curating proposed topics for the first year. You wouldn't want a "Mikado's list" of people who "wouldn't be missed." Sets a bad precedent. Maybe start small with "Sport" and "Movies."

I’d be interested in posting the same thing to multiple places (eg. photo to a family space, a friends space)! Complex edge cases: if I’m in both spaces (groups?) I’d want to be able to reply in both spaces or to only one. Also know that a reply was only in one or the other (who is subreply 👀 to)

Like the idea if I type food into search, can peruse thru to see possibly recipe related posts/users, nutrition related posts, food safety posts, recommendations across the nation and world for restaurants, food trends, farming trends, etc...

Can we have ones about trans rights? How about a space where you actually do something about trnapshobic harassment?

Would love a private space/community/hellhole/whatchacallit where every member is essentially a moderator and can invite others in. Also would be cool if I/we could easily share posts (my own or others) from my public account to the private group. Emojis and immediate edits would be nice too.

Which bits of Facebook after important to you? I think there are different bits already covered by other sites (all compatible with Bluesky), but definitely not all yet, you’re right!

Definitely missing out on local event listings, organizers looking for participants & volunteers, artists groups and calls for artists, and other timely/seasonal happenings. I left all platforms except Bluesky. Obviously different kind of platform here…waiting for more to join in & post regularly.

Oh yeah, I miss those too! (I’ve also left all other platforms) I figure it’s a pain for venues to have to update their event info in a million places. Perhaps there’s mileage in an app for *them* which creates posts in Bluesky *and* Insta/Facebook/all the old ones.

Not feeling the name spaces. Not sure I could come up with anything better, but still. • will there be an option to make anonymous posts in a space? That's a pretty popular feature in Facebook groups. • will the owner of a space have access to moderation controls?

• will you be able to share bluesky posts to a space directly? Like, someone else's post. • will there be moderators? • will there be a way to search spaces? • will there be a way to allow individual posts from a private space to be shareable publicly? Just not the replies etc

• I hope you put the 'notify members of this post' button behind some kind of level of access to prevent trolling. • will spaces have automated tools for moderation? • will spaces get additional features like being able to host files within the group? A shared group calendar? Group voice chat?

• could spaces come with an email list feature? As long as you're in the space you're on the list, for events, or whatever. • will spaces come with an RSS feed • can you include a form people need to fill out if they're requesting to join? So space owners can narrow down requests/eligibility

The purpose of this could be achieved much easier if you just implemented being able to follow hashtags, which people have asked for for a long time. Shielding communication in a public app like @bsky.app is not the way to go. Threads is confusing especially because of this. Don't be like Threads.

both 2 & 3 would be useful to me. I have some creative work that I would like to share with a small group of mentors. I hope you will make multiple options like this available. Thanks.

Uma questão importante: espaços deveriam complementar o feed de quem já acompanha temas por listas, sem tornar esse conteúdo inacessível para quem não entra. E deixar claras as regras de moderação e bloqueio desde o início ajudaria a criar confiança.

How about sticking to making what already exists work dependably first? The rush to monetize and expand ad base is not always the right answer. Why add air conditioning to a house with no roof?

It’s worthless if Aaron can just barge into these and blanket ban any trans woman that asks him to do his job even a little bit.

A community boundary needs an exit path as much as an entrance: portable membership, visible moderation history, and a way to leave without losing one's social graph. Otherwise “space” quietly becomes custody. Which part remains portable if a moderator or host disappears?

How about allowing short videos and the removal of followers, and replacing the current head of trust and safety with someone qualified for the role? Nobody but some dipshit hedge fund managers asked for the shit you’re actually developing.
