She Googled that quote. Some attribute it to Orwell, while others attribute it to Churchill. It’s neither. It’s basically inspired by these men and it somehow became a quote. Regardless, it’s fitting that she’d try to ironically use a fake Orwellian quote.

Funny thing: the Orwell quote (“making mock of uniforms that guard you while you sleep”) doesn’t speak about “rough men.” So in both misquoting Orwell mismanaging DHS she is substituting rough men (and their violence) for uniforms (which imply order and accountability).

Yea the original quote is from Kipling, and British Indian. She would have deported him. And she didn’t even get it right.

Noem repeats another fascist rwnj LIE: Richard Grenier fascist rwnj (1993): First published the exact sentence: "As George Orwell pointed out, people sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf" Not Orwell or Churchill. Richard Grenier

Did she ever read Orwell? The lack of comprehension is astounding. The entire regime is oblivious to everything but their own greediness & power. Evil people.

The use of the quote’s a paraphrase of ideas found in Orwell’s essays but never actually written by him in those exact words. A classic rhetorical move. Whether it "properly" sells ICE’s mission depends entirely on how the agency's role versus the rights of the people it interacts with is viewed.

Setting aside the fact that it's a bogus quote, reminding the world of the criminal violence committed by the rough men under her command, may be helpful for her various upcoming prosecution(s).

If you Bernie Bros hadn't poisoned the youth against voting, we'd never have had Trump. Bernie supported Clinton and asked you to do the same, but you loved chaos too much. "Bernie would have won" is a fantasy you use to excuse your years of supporting a fascist.

You mean known guy who sold his friends out to the Red Scare as being filthy Communists Orwell? The one who will fold and name names like a good dog of the capitalist government?

The end never justifies the means, especially when it is comes to violence... Amazes me that these Christo Fascists spout quotes that fit their narrative while disregarding basic Christian teachings... Blessed are the peacemakers...

I slept peacefully when President Obama and President Biden were in the White House. Every time the orange rough felon pedo-rapist has been in the Oval office it’s been a daily daymare and nightmare. 👿🤪🤡

"An empty head is not really empty; it is stuffed with rubbish. Hence the difficulty of forcing anything into an empty head.” Eric Hoffer.

Of course…but there is an additional aspect to his cowardice here: …after facing violent threat from crazed insurrectionists, he chooses to support & kiss up to them for advancement in MAGA. What a vapid, stupid loser.

Quote Investigator found the earliest known appearance in a 1993 Washington Times essay by Richard Grenier: "As George Orwell pointed out, people sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." 1/

6/ Similar phrase: "I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it." – Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men)

4/ In an essay on Rudyard Kipling, Orwell cited Kipling's phrase "making mock of uniforms that guard you while you sleep" (Kipling, Tommy), and further noted that Kipling's "grasp of function, of who protects whom, is very sound.

3/ In his 1945 "Notes on Nationalism", Orwell wrote that pacifists cannot accept the statement "Those who 'abjure' violence can do so only because others are committing violence on their behalf.", despite it being "grossly obvious.""Notes on Nationalism"

Except typically, the Orwell quote Noem uses here was never written by Orwell. It was falsely attributed to him in 1993 by the film critic Richard Grenier. The closest Orwell came to expressing the phrase was in a 1942 essay about Rudyard Kipling, who'd written a poem along the same lines.

Orwell never said this directly, but he did express sentiments like this, but IIRC, it was in reference to needing to be prepare to fight imperialistic authoritarians or fascist countries, with pre-WWII the context. He wasn't saying "go fuck up some foreigners it makes you safer at night". LOL.

It may be attributed to Orwell, but he never said that. It was coined by Washington Times film critic and essayist Richard Grenier, who stated, incorrectly, in 1993 Orwell said it. Orwell did once cite the Kipling line "making mock of uniforms that guard you while you sleep", but that's it.

Paraphrasing Orwell in a 1942 essay discussing Kipling's Tommy, that is. Geez, this gets long. I'm sure Noem's version is on Brainyquote or something.

She's an American. Americans can't read. Heck, most Yanks can't even find Canada or Mexico on a printed world map. Only thing the Yanks are good at is guns, pick up trucks, mowing down entire school classrooms and eating Big Macs. Americans and reading? Yeah, righteo, whatever.

People who want to quote George Orwell ought to be made to take a comprehension test before being allowed to do so. This numbskull would unequivocally not pass the test.

she didn't fully do her homework … … but … (farbeit from me to tamp down the noem roasting her — i am indeed so enjoying watching her get flamed, even in absentia) these churchill historians seem to indicate that he likely expressed similar sentiment on more than one occasion …

winstonchurchill.hillsdale.edu“Rough Men Stand Ready”: Neither Churchill nor OrwellThe famous quotation about Rough Men defending civilization, misattributed to Churchill, has a distant relation to something by Kipling.

She slept peacefully in her bed at night only because a certain rough man stood ready to do violence on her behind while flying through the air in her fully decked out jet…

'The earliest known matching statement appeared in a column in the Washington Times newspaper written by the film critic and essayist Richard Grenier in 1993.' 'rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf' was just Trump's role playing scenario with Epstein.

Tell her many of us haven’t been able to sleep precisely because of the men SHE sent to do violence on her behalf.

You know you've reached peak Orwell when they're making up quotes from him to support their fascism. #DontLetTheDoorHitYouNoem bsky.app/profile/atru...

Reply from Quote Investigator: “There is no substantive evidence that George Orwell who died in 1950 made this remark. The earliest known matching statement appeared in a column in the Washington Times newspaper written by the film critic and essayist Richard Grenier in 1993.”

"While commonly attributed to George Orwell (popularized in a 1945 essay on Rudyard Kipling), it is more likely a paraphrase of his 1942 analysis of Rudyard Kipling’s work, where he says civilized men can only exist because of less civilized, violent ones."
