A bot can't fix it's own shortcomings. It can't apologize. It's not a person. It's owners can and should be held accountable for allowing child porn on their device, however. That should be the focus.

Grok isn't doing anything. Grok is not intelligent. Why are we treating a CSAM generator like somebody who made a mistake on the first day of their job?

Adult artists producing legal works are being demonized and regulated to the point of extinction but a bot that nobody truly understands how it works generated CSAM and it's "oh well, it's sorry, let's give it another $10 billion"

100%. We really are on the dumbest timeline bsky.app/profile/epin...

Y'all are lying sacks of disingenuous trash. Grok can't 'do' anything. It's an algorithm. The developers behind their revenge porn, CSAM generator got caught allowing it to do what it has been used for over and over for the last two years. You're pathetic.

I'd like to know how to report this false story shielding child porn distributors to CNBC. Email Customer Care: Send details to customercare@cnbc.com, specifying the article, show, anchor, or product involved.

>A Grok reply to one user on X on Friday stated that it was “urgently fixing” the issue and called child sexual abuse material “illegal and prohibited.” why is this sentence even in the article? what does it add? the generated text is meaningless and has no relevance to anything

>a grok reply to one user stated that it was "taking a long nap" after the holiday period and called salmon an "overrated" fish. it generates text in response to prompts. if the prompt suggests a response should include claims of action on its part, it'll generate them. that's it.

Could CNBC maybe give its writers a quick primer on what LLMs like Grok are and how they work? It doesn't matter one bit what Grok "says" is happening. It has no idea of what xAI is doing. It's an algorithm that generates output on the basis of "What would a human response to this query sound like?"

They do realize it was the people using the A.I, yes I don't like A.I generators but shifting all the blame to a algorithm based program is stupid. Note "algorithm"!

Who is fixing what? As long as they are allowing people to prompt their AI to take clothing off a person in a photo, it will continue, because there are thousands of photos of children on that site. The fix is for them to stop allowing people to edit photos that innocent people posted on that site

No it's not! That's factually not true! The model just generated some text that claimed that, which is not a statement of fact! Delete your account then your whole website!

Put to market before this *obvious* use wasn’t ironed out? What will this idiot have to do to before the majority of the world realise how dangerous he is to society and humanity?

NO IT IS NOT. Grok is not a sentient being. Stop doing PR for the company that makes the environment-destroying, plagiarism-fueled child porn machine.

Grok is not fixing anything, it is not an engineer, it is not a person, it does not have any agency of its own. Please stop with this parroting of nonsense from tech bros.

Hey um, Grok isn’t doing shit, it’s a computer program. Musk is paying his engineers to try to fix this problem after Musk had his engineers create a CSAM generator. Humans are responsible and need to beheld responsible.

Grok is not “fixing it‘s safeguards. The software engineers who work on It are fixing it. What is more concerning is that Musk sees it more as a joke and I suspect we will continue to see people use Grok in this manner.

This piece refuses to mention that Musk personally restored the count of a user who shared CSAM material on the platform, and *pays that user to be on the platform*. Why do cover up this pertinent fact? And why is the author’s byline linked to their profile on the child sexual abuse platform?

Not to mention the fact that he openly stated his intent to make his LLM and GenAI tools without safeguards and restrictions. Seems like that demonstrates intent in the case of any incoming lawsuit.

Live in a blue state? Contact your State AG, report a violation of state CSAM law. By who, they'll ask. And you say Elon Musk. Offer to send them a copy of the WRITTEN CONFESSION given via GROK of this violation. Request they subpoena X for the names of accounts that requested CSAM from Grok.

elon is trying to help trump distract from the murder cover-up of a csam merchant with csam of his own 🧐 bsky.app/profile/t0us...

they said the DVR that was supposed to be recording the cameras in Epstein prison area was broken and that is why we cant see clearly everywhere the night he died. DOJ just released footage from that 'broken' DVR, proving they lied and deleted evidence youtu.be/nqJshXqslEM?...

It. Is. Not. A. Person. It cannot speak. It cannot act. It cannot think or know. It cannot fix anything, it cannot conceptualise a 'lapse', and it does not know what a child is. By pretending otherwise you are endangering children further by covering for the perpetrators.

No it's not. What's an embarrassingly lickspittle headline. How about, "Nazi makes pedo machine. Media still kisses his ass"?

Between this and the Epstein list it's clear the USA has normalized child sexual exploration. Despite all the fear mongering they targeted the Trans community with it turns out the real groomers are sitting behind the desks of government and walking the halls of power.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! People control this technology and are responsible for releasing it without safeguards in place. They need to be held accountable. This shit isn’t magic. And even so the wizard behind it is responsible.

how is this allowed to still function? if anyone else “accidentally” created child porn publicly, they’d already be in jail

"Samantha Subin is a technology reporter for CNBC.com. She previously covered markets and technology investing for CNBC Pro. She joined CNBC as a news intern in January 2021 and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in multiplatform journalism and general business."

Grok is a computer program. It only executes instructions. Humans allowed lapses in safeguards and humans will have to fix this. Humans are responsible. Focus on them.

A bit cannot fix anything. What Musk did was facilitate the distribution of CSAM. It’s not difficult or nuanced. Also, bots can’t apologize. These are criminals and should be treated as such.

when are you going to report with the proof that they "fixed" it? or - when it inevitably happens again because X is an amoral company and won't change anything unless they are held accountable - will you just write the same headline again the next time it happens?

There is no excuse this long into this tech being on the scene and being so important to the US economy to still be so irresponsible in your reporting about it. Where are your tech journalists? Why can't they actually report how these chatbots work?

Kinds of seem like the real story is the owner of the platform defiantly defending his revenge porn machine and mocking exploited children. But a story about how you were conned into believing that a “AI Bot” could fix anything, let alone behavior hard coded into it, might be interesting too…

If you’re calling this “safeguard lapses”, then you might as well call gang rape a “group consent misunderstanding“. Y’all are weaklings trying to appease a handful of fascists.

It can’t. That’s not how it works. It’s very disturbing that this reporting is treating a user-prompted response from a chatbot as if it is 1) an official statement from the company, and 2) indication of any sort of intent.

The post from Grok is functionally the same as the CSAM from Grok; a response generated to satisfy a user request. xAI has NOT made any statement addressing this, and pretending a random post from their sentence-generating machine counts as an official communication is journalistic malpractice.

theverge.comSex is getting scrubbed from the internet, but a billionaire can sell you AI nudesGrok’s nonconsensual deepfakes show how hollow the online safety push can be.

You mean...the people that run Grok, right? The people who run X that enabled this to happen, right? X's staff allowed CSAM through GROK. That's what happened. Grok isn't a person and your phrasing of blaming it on the AI is SEVERELY downplaying how serious this is. Yikes 😬

Oh, interesting. I just read the thread of some of the people that read the article. Thank you all for informing me GROK made the statement, not the staff of X. So, they're throwing AI under the bus when the STAFF enabled a crime. Fucking yikes.

Running cover for a company that designed a program that produced CSAM. Truly amazing how many organizations are not just skewering this guy for making a pedophile machine.

X/Grok pushed the idea that you can now edit anyone's images in a recent update. They changed the TOS to permit this. Yet you call it a lapse? These AI companies have been trampling privacy and protection rights for years. It gets worse and worse and you still don't get it.
