I don’t know if I’d want to claim being part of a community or scene but I suspect if you had to categorize me, I’d be group 1 with a group 2 implementation problem: - reads papers / cares about semantics / keeps receipts - immediately goes, “what if we make the kernel do something deranged”

okay I gotta ask as an outsider what is EA and e/acc I saw EA and AI in a post earlier and thought it was Electronic Arts... and with this post I've now realised it's not that.

EA is effective altruism wikipedia covers it fairly (i'm biased) but basically a movement taking a spreadsheet approach to doing the most good EAs donate to and work on for instance fighting malaria and improving farmed animal welfare but also some are concerned that AI might ruin the future

EA is effective altruism. Focused on charities that have most impact, not on a "minimal administrative costs" front but explicitly picking causes that improve quality of life (and save lives) the most per donated amount.

The reputation isn't super clean due to 1) there being many loud longtermists, people who want to focus on saving most lives on long-term. This can be anything from pandemic prevention, to AI regulation, public latches onto and laughs at extinction risk, but it's not the only risk they care about.

EA: Effective Altruism. Utilitarianism applied to charity, once "let's focus on mosquito nets," now "help we need a trillion dollars to stop a hypothetical apocalypse and SBF is in prison." Cultists. E/acc: effective accelerationists. Just build and don't ask why: AI will reason for you. Fascists.
