Ever notice how many men see a woman doing something they think is risky (like traveling alone) and immediately assume she’s naive and stupid - instead of assuming she’s intentionally taking a calculated risk? They can’t imagine a woman might do something even mildly dangerous on purpose.

Once you start looking out for this, you’ll start seeing it everywhere. (I suggest Reddit communities dedicated to travel). These dumb dudes all think they’re hardcore Operators even if they’ve never been anywhere scary than London, and *they* assume all women are too stupid to calculate risk.

Naturally, these are the exact same guys who start frothing with rage around the “women would prefer to meet a bear in the woods than a human man” concept, because they don’t understand that every woman that dates cis men IS taking a highly calculated and very serious risk.

“This woman must be traveling alone in a place I, a big strong man, believe is Too Scawy and Exotic because she’s really stupid.” Meanwhile, they just assume a man doing the exact same thing knows the dangers perfectly well and is cool and brave.

my brother is afraid (in that blustery fascist way that badly attempts to hide it) of the local train station because there's a lot of homeless ppl there; so that's how seriously i take certain guys' assessment of risk.

This isn't exactly what you're talking about but Idk. I have had a couple points where (with their permission) I've helped guide a woman I met somewhere because they were lost, maybe a little out of it, and not in the best area and didn't want someone else trying to take advantage or something.

I guess for me the reason I usually wouldn't do the same for a guy is more just...a "he's on his own" response? Idk. Like I wouldn't feel any responsibility to help beyond maybe giving him some directions. I'd probably see them more as a potential threat than a person I need to help?

I travel a lot alone in unusual places. NO one sucks more at risk assessment than comfortable white men who *think* they’re hard men. They’re the demographic who overwhelmingly get into the most stupid, easily avoidable dangerous incidents because they’re basically flightless island birds.

This is part of why I had to divorce my ex before I could move out of TX. He couldn’t see the threat to me and my friends, and thought his good job would protect us … from fascism … 😬 Yeah, that’s not how that works.

It’s inherently hilarious that the gender with the shorter life expectancy thinks they’re better at assessing risk. I mean the sample size we have on this experiment is ENORMOUS, and yet…. bsky.app/profile/fain...

To be fair, there's a lot of evidence that testosterone contributes to both the overconfidence/risk seeking *and* wears out your body faster (women have the menopause, which aids with the latter)

As evidenced by all those "I shouldn't have survived" survival stories that start with a man going out poorly prepared, in the wrong season, in the wrong weather, armed only with his overinflated ego. (And somehow it's always a man, or a man dragging along his vulnerable family)

After about a dozen easily identifiable mistakes, he reminisces "it's at that point I knew I'd lost control of the situation" (and everyone rolls their eyes because the situation went south the moment he decided to kayak a difficult route out of season with an inexperienced buddy and summer gear)

I know far too many of these types, including one who - after his first African exposure travelling through Ghana & Burkina Faso in a larger group - managed to get himself all the way to Mozambique and end up spending several months in jail there.

Though my favourite polar opposite - let’s call him Dave - was 300 lbs of biker tattoos & black leather, who’d decided after looking after his grandma he would go into geriatric nursing. Big ol’ bear, change his life, could end you without blinking but only if you were dangerous. Loved him 🧸 💜💙

Oh I witnessed that so many times in Cairo, Paris, Tunis, Istanbul, etc, etc Once, I witnessed middle aged white dude almost got his ass pummeled in Accra big open market. He was saved by a bunch of Ghanaian women. It weren’t for them, that dude would’ve been beaten like a piñata.

Jakarta 1993 I pulled a handsy, irate, and drunk middle-aged Dutch guy (probably younger than I am now) out of a very rough bar, put him in a cab and handed half the cash in my wallet to the driver. 20 mins later he walked back in. The next time he went out through a plate-glass window.

This is all spot on but I would add that they treat small, non-heteronormative men with that same attitude. It can challenge the 4x4 gun guy ego to see a (homophobic slur of choice) do things that they find scary. Hiking in grizzly country without a gun, bike touring on desert tracks...

I salute and entirely support the legions of sex workers who have made very good money off of the profound overconfidence of dumb privileged men who think they’re the baddest motherfucker to ever book an airplane ticket to somewhere where they Speak Foreigner.

for example, I used to live in Cambodia, and you can guess the demographic of that guy who got shot in the ass by a security guard after he got wasted one night and refused to get off the hood of a government official’s expensive black SUV

They are our strongest soldiers. Very much reminds me how the entire cottage industry of findom probably wouldn't exist if it weren't for mediocre men who have failed upward their whole lives.

Ahh yes, but you see, minimizing risk and planning for contingencies is woke, gay and for girls. They will simply handle whatever scenario presents itself through the immense strength and ingenuity that comes naturally with being a skinnyfat middle aged white guy born and raised in suburbia

They're really bad at assessing anything, to be fair, because they've never faced consequences for a miscalculation. They also tend to watch stuff that feeds their fears, perhaps in hopes of making them feel more prepared to facing them, while only making themselves more fearful.

So many people were horrified that I traveled with just The Kid to New Orleans and took public transit the entire time. Meanwhile I felt safe as houses because there was a buffet of overconfident fools available for predators to choose from.

The amount you get with sober, vaguely paying attention, not at bar closing time, not trying to buy something illegal, and not following a stranger down a dark alley is surprisingly high.

My husband isn't even one of these Big Tough Operator Guy types, but this behavior is SO ingrained in American masculinity that he still occasionally succumbs to the temptation to think he's required to "protect" me.

Even in situations where, in any abstract conversation, he would openly admit I'm more knowledgeable/competent than he is ... put us in the moment, and suddenly Boy Brain takes over. Boy Brain never helps, sometimes actively makes things MORE dangerous.

Much of our unearned confidence (us outdoorsy ex-military types) comes from two privileges: To hunt & fish where 90% of the time man is the scariest thing outdoors (no grizzlies or big cats). To fight at the tip of a very long combined-arms well-provisioned spear. Privileged confidence building.

Reminds me of the Tumblr post about how unrealistic it is that vampires target women, who have less blood and are also more likely to be wary of strangers, whereas you could catch a guy by hiding in a bush and going "dude look at this fucked up squirrel I found"

I have a second story, too. Paris. It’s midnight and I just got off a train. Have to find my hotel—and the shortest route is through a cemetery. Stopped by two Brit dudes who insisted they buy me a cab/escort me because ‘danger’ in graveyard. Me: “Sir, everyone there is dead.”

I was walking back to my hotel at night in Switzerland when I was a teen traveling alone. Now Switzerland of course is a lot safer than the US, but it was dark! I remember feeling I was surrounded, and hearing some rustling and then bells.

I went by myself to Moscow for research some years ago. I rocked up to Senchenov and my colleague (a Brit who lives in Russia) had a near melt down on discovering I spent the day traveling about alone by rail and was doing just fine. ‘But you don’t speak Russian—and you and US woman person.’

OMG flashback to when I lived in Ecuador and had to explain that just because I took the bus lots of places by myself did NOT mean that they (American backpacker dude) should take the bus from Ecuador to Colombia because that route went through cartel territory and it was stupid to risk it.

Meanwhile every woman in that bar, no matter how small she is, has already added the threat landscape with far more nuance and figured out how to escape it (hopefully) should things go sideways.

I spent a lot of my career demanding safety improvements from qualified engineers in our labs. My “I want my 6 year old to be safe in here” was met with “Fool, we are trained and know what we’re doing”. My reply was “and the day you trip, all your training will be good for is to say ‘oh shit’”🙄

This is really funny to me bc one of my friends went to Brazil last year with her now-ex-boyfriend, and if I remember correctly he got into a needless fracas with a customs agent that she and her travel companions were all worried would land them in jail….

Oh yes. Drove with BF from Toronto to Vancouver in 90s, driving someone else's car (when you could do that). He lost his shit when I jokingly let the customs agent search the car. Like dude, getting your hackles up with them or me is not going to help...

at an early age i recognized my father was the fucking problem everywhere we went. i started going places by myself as soon as i could; i felt safer and more competent on my own. i taught my mom she could do it too; yankee games in the Bronx, the us open in queens, concerts in newark—without him 😁

Men account for 77% of deaths by "accident or misadventure." My husband and I quote that stat to each other whenever we see a man or men doing something stupid. So, you know. We say it A LOT.

Jamaica is actually one of the places I’d feel more at risk traveling alone, just because I would be an obvious foreigner and look like a piñata full of cash and valuables

Everyone with real conflict management experience, including most of the police officers I’ve known who’ve worked in real dangerous jurisdictions, will emphasize how deescalation skills are the most important thing to have.

I still miss the local beat cops from when I worked in a bar in a moderately rough area, in college. We’d see them multiple times a night and I think they had to resort to being physical less than a handful of times the two years I worked there.

The most important skill by far.Being able to talk to people is a skill that never gets emphasized enough.(Understatement)

I have met a number of small women (and some small men) who have 100% successfully and non-violently talked themselves and outwitted themselves out of dangerous scenarios

Even in the usual places. Something like 80% of the hiking deaths in the alps are men over 40. No ability to risk assess! And being in that demographic I've felt that. Somehow even worse than being a teenager if you let hubris get a foothold.

My experience in the Alps is as a climber and I think part of the issue is the proximity of serious mountains to large population centers along with easy access. So you're more likely to get people there without the necessary background to access risk properly.

Interesting. I wonder if those stats are the same in the states. I’m guessing it’s the demographic that’s not used to having their credentials questioned. So many hiking accidents I read about, the person is reached as an expert hiker. Then I read the details of how it all happened.

I've noticed that footwear is a DEAD giveaway for this demographic. These guys always, always buy the worst possible footwear for the situation for the most possible money.

Yes - our friends used to do a new years camping thing on BLM land every year with no incident. One year a friend of a friend who was “extreme weather trained” showed up, did a lot of wrong things based on cockiness, and… well, he wound up dead

Coming back from Thailand and showing people some cool little trinkets I got and inevitably some dude wants to tell a story about how good he haggled something in a 3rd world bazaar and I’m like, “well full price was like $2.50 USD so I figured I’d save 10 min of being a dick and just pay it.”

Absolutely. I never bargain in Mexico, even though that’s common there. Also, patronize artisan collectives if you can. You know the piece is genuine and the maker will get the money.

“You gotta haggle or they don’t respect you!” Me: “I’m literally never going to see that guy again in my entire life.” Guy: *walks 7 miles home to his shack, cooks some rice porridge, sits down on the dirt floor* “lol, hey honey you’ll never believe it, this total cuck came to my stand today and…”

Friend insists that I am going to get killed in “the Balkans” and leaves “to hang out in Amsterdam.” 1998. I had a life changing experience, make life-long friends, found my career, and got to rush to Amsterdam where my friend has been beaten half to death by a motorcycle gang.

There are certain people who are able to find trouble no matter where they look. Not a great superpower! I'm sure that somewhere there is a woman with this tendency but 100% of the people I know who could get their ass kicked at a Shrewsbury IHOP are male

“Haha why’d you pack so much? You women and your stuff! I’m a minimalist man and only need this small backpack.” “Hey can I borrow your sunscreen/toothpaste/ibuprofen/bandaids/hairbrush/tissues/portable phone charger/hand sanitizer?”

OMG some in my family freaked more when I went (alone) to Afghanistan to work for a NGO I was volunteering for than relatives going there to fight...I spoke with mostly male troops heading their way there about the culture, and they were floored I drove around in unarmored car with no armed guards.

I enjoyed reading this and realized I tend to take the himbo approach too. I'm big enough that anyone who wants to mess with someone will pass me over, but am friendly and open enough to have nice interactions with pretty much everyone.

Yes, the first half of the movie, “Apex,” makes this point - that men think women will trade the vague threat of being alone in nature for the very real threat of sharing space with predatory men. It made me so mad that I envisioned a Purge sequel where only the women are armed.

Ok so I’ve been binge-watching Alone, where they drop people off alone in the wilderness and whoever survives longest wins, and every season the earliest guys to leave are ones who thought they were tough because of Bravado and Guns But as soon as they’re out there with no guns they freak out 1/

Oh god, that show is such a petty-joy-watch for me. Because I would never claim to be a survivalist but I still have more than enough experience to know that, say, camping out under a tarp on a windswept beach in frozen temps is absolutely doomed. Absolutely baffling. The crushed egos are a delight.

They're too tough to be cold! They can survive anything through the power of delusional bravado! One man tried to hunt a moose. But all rights, he should have died, but the universe was amazingly kind to him. Then he left the meat out overnight and was shocked scavengers ate it. I can't even.

I play a game called “The Long Dark” set in a post-apocalyptic Northern Canada in winter, and one of the (many) fascinating things about it is how radically the gameplay changes if/once you get your hands on a gun of any kind.

It really is (there are modes where you never find a gun or ammo) - when you’ve been surviving the wolves, timberwolves and bears for 20ish days & you find a rifle, the change in worldview is almost dizzying, if you think about it. (Even though even a rifle isn’t a guarantee against a bear)

One of my favorite shows because most people are Fierce and they tap because they can't take the crushing loneliness. The people who do the best have total peace with themselves and don't mind being their own company

Incidentally this is why Roland is the goat of the show, because he was in the mould of the Mountain Men of the 1800s in terms of skill but also had nothing to prove that he could do it. He just liked living that way. Most of the Tough Guys(TM) who quit need to prove that they are Tough

“There are bears! I didn’t sign up for bears!” You literally signed up for bears What you did not sign up for was feeling emotionally dysregulated and not being able to fix it with dominance cosplay (A high percentage of these guys are military or cops) 2/

Meanwhile zero of the women have tapped out because of bears. And I think it’s because they’ve NEVER been able to cosplay as apex predators, so they’ve always known the deal is living in harmony with nature, and dealing with the fact that there are predators out there. /fin

(i should never say fin, there's always more) I think those guys who are mad women would choose the bear know that they'd be scared of the bear and are SO UPSET because (they think) she's saying she wouldn't be, which makes her better than them at manly things like bravery and puts her above them /

I would not sign up for that show because the wilderness is full of things for me to trip over or that would make me break out in hives, but I don’t try to pretend I’d be good at it

Yeah, I am staying far away from it, fascinated to watch inside my sturdy house, where we have tamed fire and run it through metal in the walls. I know I don't have the skills to survive out there.

My survival gear is more oriented towards “urban power outage” might have to walk extended distances in unpleasant weather the one survival item I don’t carry enough of for that focus is CASH for if the payment terminals are down I should fix that
