It's full steam ahead for NASA, according to Sean Duffy, the agency's acting administrator. During an internal employee town hall, Duffy warned of "letting safety be the enemy of progress" when it comes to winning the space race, according to a recording obtained by NBC News.

Virgil “Gus” Grissom Edward H. White II Roger B. Chaffee I grew up in the days when NASA had a great PR dept - they sent beautiful color photos of the astronauts and samples of the Tang, etc. Tragic these men died so young

Well, to be fair, he fired the safety panel of the FAA and many air traffic controllers and we’ve had many crashes and many close calls. So we knew he’d do it at NASA also.

...because, to these clowns, rushing to send people to a distant lifeless rock, just to beat someone else to it, is obviously a higher priority than dealing with what this country is currently experiencing.

!?!WTF!?! Space exploration has always been inherently dangerous. Trying to manage that danger is truly “mission critical”. Does Duffy think people are expendable? And does this philosophy include FAA operations, too? Rail and highway safety? He is unfit.

Yes, to the christofascists we are all high functioning livestock. We are all expendable for their profit or glory. If you are ill or disable you are faulty livestock and should starve with the least expense to the neo-nobility. Making conditions safe is extra expense.

A key paragraph showing the insanity on display- Despite the White House proposing to slash the agency's budget by roughly 24%, Duffy insisted the Artemis program will continue, but “it’s important that we bring the cost down.”

We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people. For space science, like nuclear science and all technology, has no conscience of its own.

Whether it will become a force for good or ill depends on man, and only if the United States occupies a position of pre-eminence can we help decide whether this new ocean will be a sea of peace or a new terrifying theater of war.

I do not say that we should or will go unprotected against the hostile misuse of space any more than we go unprotected against the hostile use of land or sea, but I do say that space can be explored and mastered without feeding the fires of war,

WTAF with normalizing life-endangering bullshit? It should be obvious, but “full steam ahead” means progress (note the word “ahead”) not regression…which actively ignoring safety concerns about actually is. You’re becoming just a bunch of toadies carrying water for the pot in which you’re boiling.

Seeing a space X rocket blow up might not be the failure you think it is. NASA uses a waterfall method, emphasizing risk-averse upfront planning, sequential processes and rigorous testing. SpaceX uses an iterative Agile approach that prioritizes rapid experiment and learn from early FAILURES. FFFO

Ah yes the tried and trusted corporate method of “kill who you like (not Me of course) so long as we are on top” system. Those child coal miners should be brought back, right?

There’s obvious concerns about crew safety. Rest assured our astronauts will be safe. They will remain firmly on the ground, as most of the program elements have barely enough budget for sustainment or are imminently cancelled.

Sean Duffy is too scared to ride the NYC subway my kid has ridden solo since 4th grade, but, like Soviet Communist leaders in the 1960's, he's more than happy to risk other people's lives on unsafe rockets. bsky.app/profile/nbcn...

NBC…. You need to do better. It’s not ur job to report one side said it’s raining and the other side says it’s sunny. GO LOOK OUTSIDE and see if it’s raining and tell us. Your job is to tell us the truth.

Sean "I was on the worst season of The Real World" Duffy is the same age as mean. That means he likely watched the Challenger disaster live on television - you know, the explosion that happened because NASA stretched the shuttle's operational parameters too far, so they could maintain a schedule.

...seeing as we WON the first space race, the only way we could lose a second race would be if they kept drastically cutting the budget & micromanaging the fuck out of NASA, and ruined our fragile economy as it was just starting to pull together, oh, wait, hold my dang space beer golly Galaxy gee...

"We are safety driven, and we should be safety driven, and FAA and DOT, we’re the same, but sometimes we can let safety be the enemy of making progress" - this makes no sense. Are they safety-driven or progress-driven?

Cool. So the next time Elon rocket explodes on the pad, there will be people on board? Great plan, from a former competitive lumberjack, Fox weekend host. Now that I think about it, totally tracks. If FAA is any indication, space travel is fucked

"Some of you may die. Its a sacrifice I'm willing to make you make. For the sake of the making me look more efficient to my boss for a few years. Thank you for your service. Except you liberal scum."
