The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality. And trans lives are grounded in reality. We see y'all. No matter what. www.popsci.com/science/tran...

popsci.comFirst-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transitionNinety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

Children socially transitioning is one thing. Giving them puberty blockers is quite another. In adult transgender people, 90% has a sexual fetish (according to research by Ray Blanchard), they are heterosexual men wearing womens clothes. How do we know the same is not true for children?

Worth noting that in the 94% figure, of the remaining "detransitioners" most of them are just non-binary. So just, still trans people going on a normal journey. (This is not me shitting on the study, just clarifying how stark the results are on this one)

Thank you! At least one major publication is willing to tell the truth and of course it's a science magazine. Treating anti trans bullshit as a valid point of view is journalistic malpractice.

I grew up reading popsci. For nearly 15 years the christmas gift from my grandma every year was renewing my subscription, and it was one of the best days of the month when a new one arrived really glad to see you on the right side of this, hell yeah

If you had told me when I was a kid that the publication behind one of my favorite books (Popular Science: Science Year by Year) would actually go to bat for an entire community, I would have been absolutely gobsmacked. We desperately need this kind of public support right now. Thank you.

That popular science is only ballsy enough to post this on the platform that they know skews heavily left instead of posting it across all of their accounts for actual visibility and challenge to far right moronic ideologies.

While I completely support trans kids I don't think they should take meds for it till like their mid teens and surgery till they are adults. If you can't trust someone to drive or stay home alone they shouldn't with life altering decisions. Allow them to figure themselves out more first.

Life-threatening it is. It is not “want” to be another gender. You understand nothing. Go read interviews, articles, watch videos by trans people, their parents and doctors. Then realize you don’t get to have an opinion on this. This isn’t about you. At all.

That's the purpose of puberty blockers -- they just delay irreversible development until the kid is older and can fully decide what they want

I second the "nope", here's more detail - those are quite inoffensive drugs, widely used for precocious puberty. There's, as far as I can tell, one potential significant side effect, bone density issues. But: doctors' experiences are that it's trivial to counter with things like calcium supplements.

Nope -- this use is endorsed by major medical organizations, pretty well studied, and really just works as it says on the tin

I’d like to add to the chorus of “Puberty blockers save lives.” Puberty blockers stop when you stop taking them, and puberty starts. Trans people know we are trans usually well before age 10. Puberty blockers would have prevented a lot of suffering and debt, as being trans doesn’t go away, ever.

Why are you OK with them undergoing one puberty but not a different one? They're functionally the same thing, after all. *Any* puberty is a life-altering decision, the only way to meet your logic would be to keep *every kid on Earth* on puberty blockers until they turned 18.

the meds give kids time to make that decision! the only kind of meds kids take are puberty blockers - which means their puberty is delayed until they're older. if someone wants to physically transition, it is much harder to do so after they've gone through puberty and have to reverse those changes.

please, tell me. what would be harmful about delaying their puberty? why are THESE meds bad? or is it bad that we've allowed them a shred of autonomy, in spite of the less than 1% regret rate (which is lower than replacement knee surgery)?

What you think doesn’t matter. You are not trans or a doctor or a parent of a trans youth. Talk to and listen to people who know what they’re talking about. You’re not supporting at all.

The "meds" are puberty blockers, which have been prescribed by educated medical professionals to treat precocious puberty in cisgendered children for decades prior to now, and there's no evidence to suggest transgender kids would be in any way biochemically different at that stage.

That's actually the compromise, instead of just giving kids the hormone supplements straight away. And it's not as if there aren't primary care physicians, endocrinologists (hormone specialists) hematologists (blood, bone, and marrow) and nephrologists (kidneys) involved in the process.

If the drug has side-effects, they're being monitored and compensated for by very educated people who understand the individual biochemical processes involved. Calcium and Vitamin D supplements to offset bone density loss, diuretics for blood sodium, and so on.

The fact that people identify as trans is reality. That's measurable, and obviously that affects who you are, what behaviour you exhibit in your daily life. Whether you treat those people with empathy is the only question here.

3 year olds knowing their gender is old, old news. We've known for a while that gender constancy develops in very early childhood. 3 years fits the known timeline of human development of gender very consistently. Thus, logically, that is when we would expect kids to begin to realize they are trans.

Been a fan for decades, and y'all just earned yourselves even more credit than you already had in my heart. Politics doesn't change facts, no matter how hard they keep trying. Protect trans kids. They deserve love and safety; many will never find either with their biological family.

is popular science the new american word for sociology now..? no!.. if it is the science of what ppl like - what interests ppl have.. why call it that stoopid name? u dumb? so if it doesn't has a shit to to with popularity which also gotten't a shit to do with science.. so what shit is it? >>

Hell yeah Pop Sci! I remember my 6th grade science teacher making us write summaries from y'alls magazines. I thought it was such fluff homework, but I discovered y'all had the coolest magazine articles around! And to see y'all supporting trans rights! YES! Please keep doing what y'all are doing! ❤️

“It’s just really important that kids can continue to feel like it’s okay to be fluid, to continue to explore”, says Tishelman. I agree, but contrary to this, all kids in the study underwent social transitioning, which is basically the opposite of fluidity and exploration. It may actually be bad ->

news that so few kids detransitioned, as it might mean that social transitioning and monolithic environmental support from F&F may make kids feel too committed to their trans identity to dare questioning it (at least openly) and maybe reverse it. They may be trapped. The study should have included

kids that didn't transition socially. Because it is possible that significantly more kids detransition whithin five years if they didn't transition socially. Such a result would then mean that a lot more caution may be advisable in terms of encouraging or facilitating social transitioning in kids.->

Kids are immature in many ways and in need to find and/or develop their identity. Being gender fluid before puberty seems likely to make at least some kids feel a certain unease or anguish about that, which may induce them to believe that the solution is just to embrace one gender: the non ->
