So, he is in favour of getting rid of the aristocracy and giving all their wealth and land back to the Nation Can get rid of the monarchy as well - all good

Strange to hear a right wing Tory bloviating on this front. I wonder how some of his aristocratic pals will take it. Presumably he's in favour of redistributing some of the property their ancestors stole?

So how many Normans does it take to change a light bulb? None - they get an Anglo-Saxon to do it There, that’s my Norman Yoke

900+ year grudges are a guilty pleasure. If you go to the Commonwealth WW2 cemetery at Bayeux, the inscription there reads: "We, once conquered by William, have now liberated the Conqueror's native land".

We need a proper system of reparations. My grandfather worked for the Raj so I owe Indians but my other grandfather was a Jewish Pole so Poles and Germans owe me.A great grandmother was Irish Catholic so I guess I owe me there. The balance so far is £12.6s.4d but we haven't started on the Normans yet.

What about the Welsh, John?! How should we feel? Especially after your display during our national anthem… John’s is a complete and utter moron, and he’s a perfect example of how privilege can elevate someone to positions in life they never should have reached.

You are right, it is a bit more complicated - Roman genes never spread in England - 1066 Anglo-Saxon king and upper class spoke Old English with Germanic culture .Some had Viking roots - Common people had older Celtic genetic roots. Showing again that the churn was among the elite not commoners

Ooh, no, but that sounds interesting! About rejoining the EU, you mean? I was actually commenting on the Bayeux Tapestry (which is embroidered) not really being a tapestry (which would instead require it to be woven on a loom).

We're only a small nudge away from "Only people who had their land stolen by the Normans are English and worthy of social housing and benefits." This doesn't go near far enough of course: if you don't look like cheddar man you or your ancestors probaby came on a small boat to the UK!

About 8-10,000 of the French settled among hat the 1.5/2 million Anglo -Saxons. They improved law and order and they transformed language and architecture without any obvious resistance. Normandy and parts of France became English as much as England became France

All those hereditary earls & barons that Redwood now rubs shoulders with & worked so hard to protect in his HoC career were given their titles through hereditary lines dating back to being pals & fixers for William I

They were Norman. Normandy didn’t become part of France until 1204. Calling them French is like describing Scandinavian settlers in the Danelaw as ‘English’.

How long do you have to live here to become British? Will almost 1,000 years qualify? I guess that forming a ruling class that spoke in French and often wrote in Latin might complicate the calculation?

They gave Redwood his accent for a start. The long vowel - 'barth' instead of bath' - entered English following the Norman conquest thanks to social climbing southerners aping their new French overlords. The North retained the short vowels of Anglo-Saxon.

William had a valid claim, denying it was a bit of underhand dealing. So less Norman Yoke and more Perfidious Albumen. (sorry)
