unlike just a few years ago, nobody online seems to be talking much about how the future economy will be built around very expensive digital pictures of cartoon monkeys anymore

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I'm not a basketball fan in any way, but the idea that a Championship Game wouldn't take precedent over a regular season game is so ludicrous, it's obviously only happening for one fucking reason, and it's as the article states: "so that men aren’t inconvenienced."

COYOTE@coyotemedia.org

Today: We’ve got @mingemi.bsky.social comin in hot with her take on the WNBA Finals Game 6 timing debacle. Why is this happening? “So men aren’t inconvenienced.” www.coyotemedia.org/valkyries-fi...

Keep me posted if you see anything relevant - especially related to tech policy and strategy work around civilian drones, aid, investigating war crimes, and remote sensing. (I’m more of a policy/research wonk than anything else, but I can wear many hats and have a lot of technical experience).

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

Related: I’m still looking for leads and help on jobs, fellowships, and freelance contracts on drones, GIS, aid, disaster, OSINT, tech ethics, and journalism. I simply will not work for evil people and/or weapons manufacturers, which is also why I haven’t had paying work since Trump 2.0 began.

A far-right nationalist going to Argentina? Where have I heard this before?

Sanho Tree@sanho.bsky.social

“According to a report published by Argentine outlet Infobae, Flavio Bolsonaro allegedly crossed the border into Argentina and planned to continue his journey to the US aboard a private jet. The report said the senator had arrived in Puerto Iguazu from where he was expected to depart for the US.”

Got 2 tickets to Daði Freyr for this Thursday at The Castro Theater in SF. Free to anyone I know as long as they'll go to use! If this post is still up, they're still available.

Ok, I'm noodling with an essay about this. It would be partly an obit, but I want to use it more to explore how academia has shifted since my mentor entered it, and what we've lost as a result. It's part eulogy, part "where are we" with higher ed. The Chronicle said no. Would anybody else care?

Zeb Larson@zeblarson.bsky.social

I had just e-mailed Steve a few weeks ago, telling him about my son and daughter. Even at 85 he was still busy working. He was deep into litigation with a tribe, had just published another book, had lecture series coming up, and was still working with the Teddy Roosevelt Library.

I think the local Blue Zones staff have done some things to improve quality of life in Petaluma, I wish the Healthcare District had thrown those dollars at local orgs that don't have some international org based on hogwash taking a cut, and are focused more on evidence-based improvements.

Elf M. Sternberg@elfsternberg.bsky.social

Ran into one of those "optimize your life" articles that took extensive data from "blue zone" research. Just a reminder: the data on so-called "blue zones" where people supposedly live longer lives is completely corrupt: theconversation.com/the-data-on-...

“The city release of documents confirmed a police drone flew through the windshield of a Peterbilt tractor-trailer truck in June, cutting the face of a Canadian driver and sending him to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Temple.” This is a key reason why I’m opposed to these drone 911 programs.

I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

If she wins a full term in November, Fire Thunder would join a growing number of Indigenous women successfully seeking higher office across the country. In Montana, the success of these candidates is a result of decades of women-led organizing on the ground.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.
