Let’s be blunt. China and Russia are already racing to dominate AI while we still debate if it’s even worth it. Hesitation is no option, we need to lead smart, and strong. My latest (in reply) adamkinzinger.substack.com/p/we-cant-af...

This government has handed China the keys on everything, especially tech R&D. With Trump shunning the opportunity for expanded minds from here and elsewhere to satisfy Red Hats and China opening their arms, it's a race to the bottom for the US.

I have been saying this over and over to my friends: Whoever wins the AI race wins. Full stop. It won’t matter who writes the laws if someone else writes the algorithms. This isn’t about innovation anymore. It’s about control. Lead or be led. There’s no third option.

Why is important that the US "beats" China at *anything*? Is it about future wars for resources and habitable land due to climate change? Why not set more important goals like feeding, housing, and medically caring for all US citizens? Is that the main goal of AI/AGI? It should be

Appreciate the urgency, Congressman. AI models are changing the game. Recently read Katzke & Futerman's “Manhattan Trap”: a zero-sum race can spike great-power conflict and safety risk. How do we lead fast and craft guardrails/international norms so democracies like ours win without losing control?

AI is a product, it's creators profit seeking. They're not out 2 save humanity. The tech money ppl are determined 2accelerate its immersion in our culture, inure the public, and sow discord. Malign actors r salivating. It is consequential in almost every facet of culture. It needs 2b regulated.

I've never heard someone say LLM is not AI. Can you explain? Do you just mean it doesn't fit your definition of AI? Not human-like enough for you? Because I'm pretty sure it does fit the generally accepted definition. So I'm confused.

Yesssss!!!!! LLM is hot garbage. It isn’t Artificial intelligence. It’s more like a trained chimp or a regurgitating parrot. If we had a real will for AI, we would have done work on the real thing. Instead we have a few marketers wanting to make a quick buck… and here we are.

I honestly don't think they're ever going to get AI with what they're putting in because a lot of that money disappearing into certain people's pockets and then they don't care whether they destroy the environment while they're doing it anyway total greed and stupidity

AI use massive amounts of power. From where will this power come from? Is it even worth using AI if the power it consumes, cause pollution and damage to the environment?

So the first round of AI will use up all available electricity and we will fire up nuclear and coal to power the beast. Trump and the tech bros just sold tech out to Qatar cause they will power it. AI is something that will screw us, like social media and where fools rush in

Cuz china and Russia don't care about its people and want their flock to harvest. Get real man, stop scooping low as that cuban billionaire. There are other technologies that can dominate or level the playing field rather than AI. - quantum/fusion/H2O

Why? Everyone who makes that claim fails to explain why. What is the connection between being the leader globally in AI and the health and welfare of the American people? We have rapacious extractive tech companies that no one in their right mind would trust and you want to give them more power?

I have seminal patents on decentralized AI algorithms for tactical platforms, particularly for air defense. U.S. companies that cite my patents are making merely incremental improvements, where their Chinese counterparts are clearly outpacing American innovation.

America is failing because Big Tech sabotaged the US patent system. Now Chinese companies exploit post-grant procedures to invalidate US patents and bankrupt US companies. In AI, China has 37,000 patent grants, whereas US companies have only 6000.

Everything you accuse China of has already been done and I sbeing done by the US. Targeting dissidents, mass surveillance, etc. Backing dictators and genocides. So please drop the pretense of the US being virtuous. All of this has been happening for years with or without AI or whatever.

If AI had the power you people claim it does the only responsible thing is to have complete state ownership and development of the technology, anything short of that cedes power to unaccountable capitalists, who are much more dangerous that China could ever hope to be.This is all about making a buck

love you Adam...the answer is no...the people in charge of AI in the US are not "smart and strong" they cannot be trusted with AI. This is worse than the Manhattan Project, which at least was led by men who had a smidgen of morality. Sociopaths are in charge now.

Let’s be blunt. If we’re going to replace human workers with inferior machines that cannot think, we need to blindly not consider the implications for this dumbing of our collective world. Our only option is to boldly push ahead with this stupidity, regardless of consequence. After all, CHINA!!!

Let them; AI research is incredibly expensive and built on the predicate that IP is irrelevant. If they come up with something good we'll just copy it (and, as Deepseek already proved, vice versa).

Unfortunately, your whole argument falls apart with the broad argument that we must harness AI before the anti-democratic authoritarian States do. You, like so many others, seem to be under the mistaken impression that the US, under Trump and his cabal, isn't now ONE of those authoritarian regimes.

WE MUST LEAD THE WORLD ON BRAINWASHING TECHNIQUES NO MATTER THE COST! Let's be blunt... Think before you leap. Saying we have to lead in something that is looking like the boondoggle of the century is idiotic reactionary thinking.

The problem isn't if it is worth it. I wouldn't have a problem if the focus of AI was more focused on military uses, but the problem is that AI is endangering the livelihoods of so many Americans and most of them haven't even realized it yet. AI threatens to replace good jobs that Americans want.

Congress especially the Democrats have done next to nothing to prepare Americans for what is to come, when businesses start replacing more and more American workers for AI. What jobs will these Americans take. If you add robotic into the mix there will be very few jobs that are AI resistant.

The toothpaste is out of the tube with regards to AI. No point in debating it. We have to win the race, but that doesn't mean we can't look to put measures in place where it doesn't cause permanent damage either.

Or, we could let China and Russia completely fuck themselves over with this destructive technology, not join them in poisoning the minds of generations, and reap the benefits of living in a society where people are still capable of processing information.

I suppose we should slurp up the world's water and increase consumer energy costs for everyone else to do it! You have nothing to drink, the fields are barren, the power is out again because our deregulated mini-nuclear power plants went into meltdown, but hey we have 'puters doing security!

On top of all Donvicts evil, his incompetence and lack of intelligent leadership is also a serious problem. Just look at his performance at the G7 Summit. He came across like a petulant fourth grader, got mad and left like a petulant fourth grader. “ Mommy all the guys at school r making fun of me.”

You’re a smart man with a lot of integrity, but I think this is simply wrong. Elon caught up to the state of the art in AI in a year (most likely by using open source models and simply ignoring all IP laws). There’s lots of work to do here, and lots of exploration of its potential…

… but not sufficient of the economic or social risks of running headlong into it. That means everything from educational harm to kids, through to their use to create chemical weapons or find new bioengineered weapons or writing viruses or destroying IP and creative industries in countries…

.. that allow indiscriminate use of IP for training. I’m not saying stop the work at all. I’m saying, high octane boosterism without similar high focus on risk mitigation, and potential societal and industrial damage could be catastrophic.

Best response here. I'd also add that we don't have AI - we have LLM's that do a great job of sifting through a massive amount of data and returning the best guess of what the user wants in a natural language format. People hear AI, and they get expectations that are nowhere near reality.

There are way too many troll accounts on here now but the conversations are still universally better than what's on the former bird platform. That said, I really want Bluesky to more aggressively deal with them.

There is no good way for Bluesky to deal with them without censorship. The most any user can do is block or ignore them. I recommend the latter. But you are correct that despite the trolls and bots conversation is better here by far… for now anyway.

Agreed! If there was ever a time where the technology stakes were higher it was the Manhattan Project during WW2. This is an escalating crisis that at some point will result in cyber attacks and control of systems that we’re not prepared for. It could be massive China could win AI will be decisive

And look at the ppl in control of its dev. Elon & bros MAGA doesn’t have the intellectual skillset required to fend off propaganda. Trump & Co know this. They’ll totally be on board w/ using Ai to turn the US into a dictatorship…as long as Rs are in control. MAGA doesn’t stand a chance against Ai.

Ai is already here & bad actors already use it. Regulating Ai will never happen when tech bros can donate millions to politicians. We need to teach classes to educate kids on how to recognize propaganda. Required all 4 yrs: Civics Propaganda Life Skills Harsh Truth History Math Science Grammar

I love how humans make up excuses and rationalize racing to end humanity and true human intelligence. 💀 Silly humans. Enjoy the race in the context of mass extinction and climate change induced flooding and extreme disaster events. 😂

Adam - I work with college students who are terrified that they are looking at a jobless future due to AI, a plausible scenario. What do you think of Chris Murphy's call to regulate before we get to, say, 20-30% unemployment in this country? www.chrismurphyct.com/p/in-our-scr...

chrismurphyct.comIn our scramble to win the AI race against China, we risk losing ourselvesA fraud is being perpetuated on the American people and our pliant, gullible political leaders.

Yup. Agreed. But. It’s AI now. In lockdown it was Indian doing 3 jobs in working from home time. Before that it was jobs outsourced to India Pakistan China. There’s always something

you kinda forgot to mention why the us (or the west or whoever else) »leading« in ai will change anything about what china or russia are doing. because what ai is not going to do is to stop the spread of misinformation.

Y'all are a bunch of little bitches. I'm sorry, it's just so stupid, the amount of passion you all have about the utterly inevitable spread of AI. Go build a hippie commune in the woods. That's the only way to avoid acting like this^^^ for the rest of your bitchy lives. So much misery ahead lol

Why does AI matter at all? The most common answer is "increased productivity" but c'mon. We're way too productive alread From what I see, it mostly just enables more commerce We have enough commerce

Have you seen what Trump's been cutting? Take years of extra funds to get back to where we were on Jan 20. I'm comp neuro - neural networks. Cuts I'm aware of include in AI, computational statistics, structural eng, et al. Over 40M cut I know personally. We've already lost. It's going to hurt!

I hate AI. First, it will take our jobs; next, it will lead to our ruin. But…the horse is already out of the barn. We HAVE to lead this tech, even though I suspect we aren’t playing with fire, but our own destruction.

Today's AI does far more than writing emails. Well, Apple's doesn't. America risks losing control over everything from infrastructure to elections...allowing deadlier cyberwarfare and even existential catastrophe from runaway AI. Remember Sputnik? China’s DeepSeek is today’s AI Sputnik moment.

This reads like it was written by a bigtech lobbying group. Also, why so much concern re China potentially using AI for bad purposes when the US government is doing that right now? See termination of research grants, mass firings, censorship of anything “woke” etc all driven by AI.

There is room for policy & law around the ethical use of AI, but the US will definitely NOT be taking the centralized approach that Russia or China have taken. We invested $109B in 2024 alone in private enterprise which is how we fund innovation here. USG can & will be a major customer.

China is way ahead. Scarcity of next gen chips forced them to be super creative with their algorithms. The US absolutely must invest heavily into AI despite the fact that we're in a big hype cycle right now.

This is a race for domination. No quarter. The winners will own the world. Sounds crazy? Yes, AI will make a crazy difference. Health, innovation, military and more. Massive difference. And massive dangers. To quote Abba, "The winner takes it all".

This is the same excuse they use to justify polluting our air and water. "But Russia and China are already doing it! We HAVE to race them off this cliff!" How about we let Russia and China be the ones to waste billions on the Plagiarism Engine For Dumbasses. How about we let them have this one.

A country won't lead AI, a CEO will. And whoever that ceo is, he will be more powerful than any prime minister or president on this planet. The country he happens to live in won't matter to him, just his power.

Adam, you know what has to be done.trump needs to step down so we can get back to business until this happens. We are in for a world of crap. The world has already said China is now the new superpower because of trump and so much more. if America can’t believe them, how can we expect the world to?

America doesnt develop AI to benifit us, its developed for greed. Target for ads, increase productivity (reducing jobs). All the extra capital will flow to the top 1% while eliminating tens of millions of jobs. I already see the hell in my job as so much work is pushed on my plate it leaves no time.

Israel and Palantir have done a lot more actual damage using LLMs plus surveillance technology. But we’re not calling them out, are we? Turns out that skynet would have been a preferable choice. Ironic, huh?
