we're testing a new beta version of the Notifications tab! it has new tabs to help you notice priority notifications, and it uses new grouping logic to reduce noise (e.g. when one person likes a bunch of your posts). disclaimer: it's a beta, not a final version. send us your feedback! :)

The orange Bell icon for “others” notifications is too close in color to the red Heart notifications. Can you make one of those, say blue, to stand out more? Thanks! I added this comment in the Beta menu, feedback. (IOS) But first impression—looks good!

I think the filters are very cool and helpful. However, aesthetically, I think it's a mistake for the notifications to be this large because it feels a little too Facebook-y. I think it's critical for Bluesky to be more in the Twitter lane than the Facebook lane because the whole reason a lot of

people gravitated to Twitter in the first place was that it wasn't Facebook - and I think the overreach of Facebook expats on here since 2024 has had the effect of pushing a ton of ppl from Twitter away, which mutes Bluesky's potential dramatically. So I personally hope the notifications shrink.

overall i really like it! - purely aesthetic but +1 the reply somewhere about action (reply, like) icons being too large on main left subject - “Activity” feels oddly named. appears to be my post/rely subs right? (grugbrain: isn’t it all activity?)

Atm the old/non-beta version works better for someone like me. I mostly get notifs from accounts I've turned notifs on for, so it was nice to have it condensed/grouped. Maybe a "Mutuals" or "VIP" section; the former is self-explanatory and the latter would be accounts users designate as VIP.

I'm an easy pleaser but it looks so much more modern and appealing to look at. I don't use notification organizing a lot but I hope you guys carry this design language across the rest of the app.

if it hasn't changed, you guys might need to be improving or creating an "EDIT your comment" tab. its almost 3rd world, in a modern app, to have to, c/p, save, delete, correct, save, then repost to correct, a typo in composition or language to post a "corrected" comment.

Does it fix the race condition? I’ll see reply push notification, click on it - then a few seconds later (after viewing the reply) I get a notification badge and have to click to remove it.

this notification in the new screen doesn't let me click on the "mutual follower"'s pfp or something to see who that mutual follower is. I'm not sure who it is just from their pfp alone (especially since it's so small), but if I could click on it to open their profile I'd have more context

1. Notification categories look like they're meant to be toggleable buttons, but work like tabs. This is a break in UX, inconsistent with tabs elsewhere in-app. 2. Multi-user activity notifs shouldn't use a big user icon. It will change as more users are grouped in, harder to filter from a glance.

3. Generally, I think activity notifications should only have small user icons while in the "All" notifications view, prioritizing replies and quotes. I DO like single-user grouped notifs, but I would still err towards reduced priority.

For clarification: I've been using the term "activity notifications" to refer to Like and Reblog notifications. I didn't realize that this term is reserved for something else entirely.

I don't think this is made for people who get a lot of new-follower notifications, which: okay, maybe I'm in a minority, but like all I see are a sea of colored circles with @'s in the ALL tab. I guess I'd prefer to see like stuff I should respond to, or that warrants my attention.

I'm not seeing a way to prevent that all notifications get auto-acked when the notification tab opens, nor a way to un-ack a notification. That keeps this notification system in the “bad joke” category. Too bad.

Some feedback here (one topic, 5-post thread, as it ended up. Sorry, over-explaining, probably): bsky.app/profile/bjke... In first post: ^switch on^switched on

bjkeefe@bjkeefe.bsky.social

To: @bsky.app @alexbenzer.com @joshuajfriedman.com @pfrazee.com Sorry, but I am not a fan of the new (beta) version of Notifications when it comes to getting notified of new posts from the people for whom I have this setting switch on. The old way grouped them as one notification. I could 1/2

Hey, wait, I got a new complaint ... Very tiny thing, actually: on the Follows tab, it would be good to have a timestamp of when that new follower started following. Hard to say when looking at a long list of unfamiliar names which ones I've already checked out and decided not to follow back

the inline filters are nice. Nice to be able to swap between the different relations of users . I dont really get why the profile pictures on the left get so much real estate. each entry could be smaller vertically if that wasnt so big and text could go there

Looks good, I do agree with some of the others that it should be tabs instead of pills (to be consistent with the rest of the app) and the followers list should have timestamps like the rest of the notifications. Besides the little inconsistencies like those, I like the overall structuring.

the functionality is useful but I hate the visual look with the avatar of the most recent user interaction being bigger than all the other avatars

I like the tabs for the different categories, especially the Activity tab, will be very useful for following events going on, and just feels more developed! Haven’t had any issues so far either

Density is definitely worse. For example, shifting the "ago" below (from inline to the side) adds a ton of useless whitespace If you know that detail is unimportant enough to be worth fading, why give it its own line?

Just noticed more vertical whitespace wasted on a standalone ellipsis + an untruncated display name If I was confused about either fact, I could click through. Neither seems worthy of that much of my "at a glance" attention

With the above caveat, I support the options provided by the tabs but only if the format of the results returned under current notifications are retained. I find them more legible than under the tabbed format.

For some reason, beta features haven’t been showing up on my iPhone for a while even after uninstalling and reinstalling.. it works on my iPad/Mac/web tho (same account)

it's on mobile too. make sure you have the newest version of the mobile app, and try force-quitting and reopening the app

There’s immediately a lot to like here, a thing or two I’m gonna see about wrapping my head around. REALLY grateful to finally have grouped notifications for when one account likes/retweets my stuff - very useful for my partner and I’s liking/retweeting habits :’)

* The big avatars in the like notifications isn't making sense to me, since the like notifications are almost always grouped. It doesn't feel like the big avatar has any meaningful relationship to the notification itself, especially since which avatar gets emphasized will change over time.

* I find the colour backgrounds behind the notification icons a bit over-prominent. I know they're not *that* different from the colours on the old versions, but they feel like they pop a bit *too* much in the new context and steal a bit of attention from the rest of the notification.

* I like the new notification tabs! I think they're a good idea and they're going to increase the signal to noise ratio in notifications. * It wasn't at all clear to me what "activity" is meant to mean.

I just enabled it, it looks good! One thing I would change is the size of the small icons next to the profile pictures: they are a bit too large, I think. Something a tad smaller would be better.

I like the tabs, but when I hit the back button on web chrome there's a weird flashing animation that's ugly. (i put the new and the old side by side and i think you can see the old is smoother)

Looks cool! It always takes some time to adjust to a new UI and solidify my takes, but one thing I will say is that the font sizes on the reply notifications can be a little confusing - the text of the reply itself is about the same size (and shade) as the "Replying to X" text above it

I'd love to see an official implementation of the alternate like and repost icons on my reposts, the way e.g. witchsky has it. I think it would help clean things up even more; I like getting notified of via-likes and via-reposts, but I'd like to see the notifs (visually) separate from my own posts

Are new notification supposed to only be highlighted in blue for a short time (or until more notifications come in)? I'd prefer they stay highlighted until I refresh or open the notifications page again like they did before to make it easier to tell new ones apart.

Thank you for *finally* letting us switch between notifications from everyone or only people we follow and having it apply retroactively, not just for notifications that occur when the setting is activated. Another filter for only people who follow the user would be great too

The larger clearly visible color coded icons placed on top of the profile picture of users that have interacted with a post makes it much easier at a glance to see how many of which type of notification is there. This is helped further by having the tabs up at the top to quickly filter them.

I also like that likes of multiple posts by the same user is collapsed down into a single line. It’s clear how many posts they have liked but doesn’t take up a lot of unnecessary space.

i think the sea of profile pictures is pretty visually overwhelming, but appreciate the tabs. maybe have it remember which the user defaults to? so like if i left the tab when it was on replies its still on replies when i come back. and/or maybe allow toggling pfps on likes/repostes

by "sea of profile pictures" do you mean the larger avatars in the left column, or the long horizontal list of smaller avatars in the grouped notifications?

i agree with this feedback. i actually turned off this beta because it was so bad. favorites and reposts should not have the same priority as a reply or quote. replies and quotes warrant possible interaction, the others don’t. too hard to distinguish notification types at a glance now.

Much easier to use and get an idea on what's going on than before. While we're on notifications, it'd be great if we could fix the broken notification categories on Android some time soon (everything goes to one of the two "Miscellaneous" categories).

One thing that really irritates is not being able to bring up the post someone has replied to from the notification. Is that down to me or a missing bit of the app.

It’s nice! My dream version would look like Google Inbox (imo the gold standard for a notification UI). One feed, with noisy messages grouped in the feed.

The "> replied to" context is so useful! So good. Swapping between home and notifications doesn't always refresh, so I hit the refresh button and it swapped back to the "all" tab. Would be cool if it remembered where I was.

I personally prefer the previous design of the standalone 🩷↩️ icons instead of them over the PFP of the last user. It makes it clearer what is a like, repost, comment. Icons particularly get lost if the PFP has a similar color, so it obscures some info and I find myself looking for the text instead.

A solid backing behind each badge would separate the icon from the avatar; test it against similarly colored profile pictures.

Found an inconsistent thing: when I click a large PFP from a quote, like, or repost, it takes me to their profile page. When I click the one from a comment, it simply opens the comment in context. I think that linking to the profile is fine: if I wanna open the comment, I’d click the comment text.

Changing the order of the tabs / a default tab would be great. I’m not interested in likes & would like to move them further to the back. What most interested in are interactions like replies, quotes and mentions. Maybe there could be a grouping option for sections or a “all replies” grouped tab?

first impression is that I don’t enjoy having one avatar being bigger in like (and repost?) groups - if I have “[a] and [b] liked…” entries I’d rather them all be the small avis? also the follows tab seems to be ignoring prefs and that might be intentional but idk if I like it…

oh wow I thought this was the custom app I was using yea I like this

Love how the avatars are displayed when there's multiple

Booo I like seeing everything a person likes at once! I’s nice seeing what specific post they liked because 9 times out of ten they’re actually scrolling through my stuff not just liking every post I made and it lets me see what people might want to see more of

On android if I have multiple push notifications and I tap on them it just opens my home feed, but it should go direct to the notifications tab. Fixing that would be nice.
