Trump: "New York City officials released a map showing ethnic communities. It includes Little Senegal, Little Guyana, but it does not include a place called Little Italy. An unthinkable omission. We are gonna work on that immediately, or we're not going to be sending them any of the billions .... "

The opening of the Verrazano Bridge over 60 years ago led a lot of Italian Americans who didn't want to leave the area to leave Bensonhurst etc. and move to Staten Island. It was sometimes called the "Guinea Gangplank."

As a native lifer New Yorker, Little Italy is no longer a real Italian neighborhood, it's a glorified tourist trap that does have a few good Italian restaurants.

It was released in 2025. By Adams. In order to be on the map, 50 percent of the immigrant enclave's residents had to have immigrated from the same country. Little Italy didn't qualify with 3 percent.

2/ more seriously, this is such an example of how the guy lives in the 50s. there's like 9 people left in Little Italy. And same for Jews in the Lower East Side. And Hell's Kitchen aint Irish.

Any day now he’s going to start talking about tough guys came up with tears in their eyes and sir-thanked him for ending the war between the Jets and the Sharks, isn’t he?

NY Blogger Jeremiah Moss wrote 14 years ago that "Little Italy is shrinking like a sandbar at high tide." The occasion was the closing of Ray's on Prince Street. A handful of restaurants on Mulberry and a few souvenir stands is about all that is left.

Cuz the PWERTO RICANS...they're have been violent dance fights between those damn hoodlums and the good Irish boys just wanting to dance and sing and dance some more...snap their fingers and what not. HORRIBLE what's happenin' in Hell's Kitchen!

I was wondering why he was going on about Columbus and Italians and I had to check the calendar before realizing Columbus Day is October 12. The reason I had to check is because WHO THE FUCK STILL CARES ABOUT COLUMBUS DAY???

Why would anyone celebrate someone that even his contemporaries in the 15th-16th century thought he was going too far. The people living in the 1490s thought Columbus was a dick. Let that sink in.

Yeah that's going to lower gas or grocery prices or give americans healthcare or stop the failure of Iran war

Also for an avowed racist, I am incredibly disappointed in Il Douche. Standing up for *Italians*. Who is next? The IRISH?! /s

his fights with the pope have him on thin ice with the italians and he thinks boosting columbus-based grievances will help him

...the fuck is he talking about. I'm a life-long Midwesterner, never even been to NYC, and even I know there's a Little Italy neighborhood...

Ah, I see what you're saying. I had to dig, but it appears that Mamdani already said they were using old data from 2023 and are working on getting a new map with the correct areas included. I guess some Irish neighborhoods were also omitted

It was a map of recent immigrant communities, not a map of where immigrants settled 100+ years ago. Most of what used to be Manhattan’s Little Italy is now Chinatown.

Exactly. I knew native Italians when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s, and even then they were of the elderly widow in black variety.

Exactly right. My ex’s father grew up in the he Italian section of a town. It eventually was the Black section and now it is the Hispanic section

If the Dutch held, we’d all have healthcare and bikes. Hitting the cafes, then snacking on poffertjes and bitterballen. Make New Amsterdam great again.

Little Italy omission was worth correcting—and NYC already said in July that it would add it back Threatening to withhold billions in federal funding over a map that was already being fixed is disproportionate Federal money isn’t supposed to be a presidential punishment tool for symbolic grievances

What he just said: the US is sending billions and billions of dollars to NYC which the Federal Govt believes will definitely be wasted but is going to stop that unless NYC puts Little Italy on the map. If NYC does, the US will again send billions and billions with the expectation it will be wasted?

FUN FACT: NYC contributes tens of billions of dollars more than it receives from the Federal government. As the driving economic engine of the entire state of New York, the city is the reason it is consistently the largest "Donor State" in the country.

Columbus was born in Genoa, so nominally 'Italian'. But married an expatriate Italian in Portugal and lived his 20s in Lisbon... also sailed for Spain. Italian Americans created the myth of Columbus -- a genius political campaign...almost as good as the Irish-American resuscitation in Kennedy!!

Right arm chicken wing tic ✅ “Liddleliddlelee” Threatens to withhold allocated funds from NYC. Just another day. Side note: haven’t thought much about this, but why does Congress have the power of the purse but the president plays paymaster for non-executive programs? Random musings.

On a tour of the Tenement Museum NYC, the guide told us that different waves of immigrants have been coming over for centuries-they settle, have families then move out of the city, which is then settled by a new ‘wave’ of peoples. Trump is an ignoramus-and that’s the most polite thing I can call him

Little Italy in Manhattan hasn't existed in any meaningful way for at least 40 years. Even Little Italy in The Bronx is more "Italian" than the one downtown - and it is largely inhabited by Hispanic Americans and the restaurants run by Albanians. He has no idea WTF he is talking about - as usual.

Trump is not entirely wrong in that Little Italy should be on that map. HOWEVER, a friendly phone call would serve his purposes better than a gratuitous threat. The map is certainly not just cause to withhold funds. Nor is it a presidential matter. Each day, Donald sundowns earlier and earlier.

You know what NYC neighborhood name needs to be brought back? Five Points!🧵

I love that Trump was handed his 34 felony convictions at the location of the infamous 1846 Battle of Five Points depicted in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York. The most notorious modern immigrant basher got a taste of accountability at the same location of the most infamous immigrant massacre.

Little Italy (and I lived there for five years, am Italian) is not an ethnic community. It is a tourist attraction. There were some nice Italian businesses left when I was there in the 90s. It's not a thing I don't value, but it's a thing of the past. Knowing your history is important and enriching

Meyers and Kimmel will absolutely feast on this helping of brain rot. But more troubling is setting the stage for crap like “no money for any city unless they rename their MLK Boulevard to Trump Turnpike."

Has anyone seen this map? Little Italy is pretty much non-existent now, but some of its landmarks are still there. What is the harm if the ethnic makeup of the city changes? That’s how “Little Italy” got there.

There are no effing "Italians" in Little Italy. No one who grew out with Martin Scorcese lives on effing Mulberry Street. It's all loft apartments converted to condos for NYC's wealthiest. Source? I work on Mulberry Street.

WTF? “If I don’t see Little Italy on a map, and soon, no fed money for you!” Nothing abt EPSTEIN FILES, IRAN WAR, GAS PRICES, UNAFFORDABLE HOUSING, HUNTING IMMIGRANTS, CONTAMINATED DRINKING WATER, SEX TRAFFICKING. Clown priorities🤡

What it is today: While the neighborhood was once a massive immigrant enclave in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it has shrunk significantly due to the expansion of neighboring Chinatown and gentrification. Today, it functions largely as a tourist-friendly dining and historical strip.

All the Italians got priced out of the neighborhood by scumbag landlords and real estate developers like Trump and Kushner. Grandpa's brain is so fried he st calls Wednesday, "Prince Spaghetti Day".

It's more of an indictment man that you don't know where Little Italy is and think New Yorkers need to be told than the fact they didn't mention it.
