Lightning, a running robot developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor, finished a 21-kilometer (13 mile) run in Beijing in a stunning 50 minutes and 26 seconds, beating the human world record by more than six minutes. https://cnn.it/4mLRxQ8

Who fucking cares? Of course a fucking machine came out because it's a machine. Also a Chinese phone maker made it? What a waste of time, effort, money and resources considering they have no Honor.

a Chinese android and its support crew in a golf cart just travelled the same distance as a real half marathon, but on a segregated and barriered course in a fraction less time than the best human has completed a real half marathon in much more challenging conditions.

Congratulations to the engineers on a biped vehicle, that’s cool I guess. Similar to AI « art », there’s no substance to compare to human efforts: on that level it’s devoid, meaningless, disqualified.

It's not that engineering isn't cool, its that this already happened with the robot dog and once it got funding it was turned into a police tool. Why should people care?

But would it be as useful as when KitchenAid developed a mixer attachment that rows double scull 2000 yards a full second faster than Olympic record, overcoming dificulties experienced previously using 1999 yard extension cord by developing 2002 yard lenght cord.

I mean, I'm glad machines do repetitive tasks well, but that's kinda their whole purpose so the "pitting them against people" part isn't helpful.

It's probable a Roomba or robot lawnmower with a stronger motor and good battery pack could do this as could a person on a bicycle with no electric power at all, an e-bike, car, bus, train, airplane, rocket, loads of things, actually. Find any device which moves at 15 mph or faster, which are lots.

So what? A cheetah can also run faster than both a human and that robot! Also that robot cannot even walk on a countryside not having a smooth cement! STOP AI BEFORE THEY STOP THE HUMANITY!

"A tireless machine outperforms humans!" They've been doing that since the invention of the steam engine. (actually since before but whatever)

I’ll just add to what everyone else is saying: this is supposed to be impressive? As if we haven’t been making machines that are faster than humans for two centuries already.

There is one and only one athletic category in which humans beat every other animal on the planet (including horses) and that is distance running. If this is what it looks like and the robot was self-powered and autonomous, that’s a big engineering achievement. (Though not an athletic achievement)

I see a lot of cool techno things on BlueSky from china: robots, trains, solar, etc. Not so much from the U.S., which is mainly about the damage data centers cause and which tech companies are buying other companies for outrageous amounts.

Yeah but if a human stumbles at the starting line they don’t generally disassemble, so there’s that

We all have days like this

A biped machine went faster than a biped human. "Stunning" Thanks CNN. Man on bicycle beats man on foot. Mom on skateboard beats toddler down a hill. Boston Whaler beats shark. Stunning.

I think it's kind of interesting actually, since the first robots people built couldn't take two steps without falling over. Kind of neat that they figured out how to make it run

Interesting? Yes! Neat? Absolutely. Robots were always going to run faster than humans, eventually. We do far more "stunning" things with robots already.🤷‍♂️ My comment is more attuned to the criminally negligent way the press uses the English language. Not a knock on the tech.

It's so funny when you think about it because cars exist Like, we already have machines that can traverse this distance faster than a running human can There's reinventing the wheel, and then there's reinventing legs AFTER you invented the wheel and found it worked great actually
