what’s your favorite bluesky bug

(for those that don't know, turns out deleting an account just does that - bsky doesn't store blobs on the filesystem so it was code that only affected self hosters)

Not a bug but it's hard to know how many latest followers I got since last checked. They get combined in the notifications. Not a big deal and I would probably care less down the road but since I'm new and most of my followers are new, I want to check their profiles to see if I want to follow them.

Open the app, you need to login (despite being logged in), close the app (without logging in) and open it again, things are back to normal and you are already logged in. Have noticed that a couple times in the last week.

Least favorite: that sometimes at random you can’t add a user to a starter pack. Seems to be folks with bsky handles and relatively new (within the last few days) accounts.

not strictly a bug, but putting the back arrow in the sidebar instead of in a header of the feed is a major design ick for me

* hover over someone's name in a post, their profile pops up * now if they have quoted someone, try hovering over the name in the quote... no popup I would want the quote popup, so that I can follow them

definitely hellthread recursion limit I still have the shirt somewhere

ben@benharri.org

sup jay i just remembered that i was wearing my hellthread shirt monday when i got 3rd at the pinball tournament https://tcpinball.org/2023/june-19-results/

we’re looking into some things that are causing bad frame drops on android but nothing conclusive yet

The one where sometimes you tap on a post and it tries to load the replies, but just spins for minutes. If you go back and try again it still does the same. Go back and try another post, same thing. Eventually it times out and everything is fine. Otherwise force kill the app and it's fine afterwards

right now it’s that my discover feed only shows a couple of posts on a refresh, and sometimes it doesn’t show any at all? (i found your post on reddit and i think it’s really cool that y’all are so involved with the user experience among this influx of people btw!)

here’s a screen recording of the type of thing going on! i didn’t manage to get it to show the message i was getting about there being no posts available, but if i get it again i will screenshot it. i have been hitting “show less of this” a lot today, maybe I’ve just gone too hard on that? 😂

also not a bug but i don't understand why i have to choose between uploading an image or uploading a video instead of a single "upload media" button. felt a bit lost when trying to upload this video clip and wrongly pressed the upload image button.

The one where I enter wrong password and then I try to backspace and it removes entire password thats there on input for me

when you paste an image and it puts the url in the post. when you delete that url, it loads up the image again as a second image

Clicking an image from someone's post, and then swiping back (on my Android phone at least), navigates away from Bluesky. On the other site the "back" gesture dismisses the image modal.

That there aren't follow/unfollow buttons on the users of a list like there are on starter packs. Perhaps a feature or as intended. But I thought they were there before I pinned it - fussy memory though.

Dragging the screen to refresh my profile. Accidentally have touch start triggered on a bio link - opens the link after touch end even though my finger is not on the link anymore

I think you're showing some variation of one I reported first day? The post input text offsets/clips when it doesn't have to? Here just the difference between 2 and 3 lines clips half the entire line with plenty of room below:

Sometimes I can swipe between fast enough that the tab strip falls out of sync with the displayed feed.

I would move the splash outside the react root, remove the spinner state, and hide the splash when the initial shell commits with the suspense fallback glimmer

on firefox on an iphone, you have to do a little scrolling before the app will let you use the bottom nav bar. i’d you click on a nav element directly after page load, it will be as if you clicked the post currently behind the bar.

Not sure if it’s a bug or feature. Click on notifications, click on a notification to bring you to their profile. Upper left has the back arrow. Scroll down to check out their posts, arrow is gone. You have to scroll at the way back up to go back. I know I could click home, just like the arrow.

On mobile swiping down to close out of a picture requires a lot further travel than swiping up, sometimes it's almost impossible depending on the aspect ratio of the image. Other apps have trained me to swipe down lest I be served Unrelated Content, so it's a hard habit to break vs swiping up.

When you are editing the description of a moderation list on the web, if you click and drag to select text and your cursor moves off the edge of the modal it closes the modal

Hard to show without seeing my fingers, but as the inertia is happening, I’m trying to swipe back but the scroll view is “stealing” the gesture. Sometimes this manifests as the scroll stopping then I have to do a second swipe. Other times it stops the inertia for a moment before continuing.

Hard to see the second thing in that video because of the frame rate. But either way, I should be able to swipe back without first having to stop the inertia. Entirely possible this is a RN ScrollView bug rather than Bsky. But it definitely makes the app feel less responsive than Hellsite.

Sometimes after watching a video or an image, when I go back to the timeline something overflows and changes the layout to the right, hiding the pfps of people. If I navigate back and forth it resets lol

The chat input on DMs will occasionally do odd behavior. Sometimes I open a DM and it’s already in the middle of the screen. Other times I go to type and the input stays stuck at the bottom as the keyboard goes over it.

Some posts have these weird links, like this one.

i believe they had another approach to build the app that allowed them to leverage a ton of existing code from their other apps. so it wasn’t as clear as use react-native or not. maybe i’m misremembering though. it’d be neat for them to share more details about this.

Reproduction, you have to be scrolled way down and then reply, could be virtualisation trying to factor in the reply at the top and losing it?

Seeing content for the same post many times in my Friends and Discover feeds (I’ll see a quote post of a post, and then the original post nearby, and then a reply to the original post without any context attached and I tap in and see the original post) They’re more timeline bugs than app though

The kerning or glyph alignment on android seem very weird... like it's trying to do semi-justified or the font is just broken. Awkward spacing of letters. Not really a favorite bug but maybe if someone else experiences the same thing then maybe someone can take a look.

just submitted these but when you exit the translate browser thingy, the app does not return you to where you were. if you’re in a skeet in a List, you get dumped back to a feed. if you’re in a skeet in a feed, you get returned to top of the feed.

Not a bug (and not my favorite) but something I noticed today I came across a hellpost that was super annoying to scroll through in app. I would’ve loved to click the tree dots to mute the thread without scrolling. However the three dots are at the bottom of the post and have to be scrolled to.

More of a UX issue but, all banners on the profile page appear over the back button. So if you follow or block somebody or something, can’t go back for a couple seconds. Unless you touch through it, which also works.

I guess this is more of a feature request, but coming from twitter it feels like a bug. Tw is really good at keeping scroll position in the feed through sessions, so I can continue where I left off. Bsky just resets to the top most times.

Jumping to the top when loading new posts, rather than keeping you where you are so you know where to continue reading. Maybe not a bug, not sure.

Currently open bottomsheets and possibly other UI overlays don't close when I open a deep link, e.g. to someone's profile. Maybe this is a feature to keep stuff like current message draft, but it feels weird.

on desktop web it does not what profiles I’m following and not only shows all without plus gray button but mobile works correctly

🦋 every time i open this app— takes almost 1 sec to open, kinda freaks me out. i open this app almost 50+ times a day and it compounds. lots of second wasted. details: using iPhone 15+ , iOS 18.1 and even app is updated.

Clicking "Translate" will open the translation in a new tab (which is fine) but meanwhile bluesky will navigate back to the home feed for some reason? It won't stay on the, err, "skeet"? I think this was a change in the last few days.

if you're in the middle of a post and you accidentally hit the back button in your web browser, there's no prompt to discard your draft and you lose everything 🫠

for a long time it was NaN showing in place of the "also followed by" number. every time I saw "und NaN andere" I would laugh. seems maybe fixed recently though

Probably not being able to swipe down an enlarged image for closing it if I move my finger too slow. Seems like the condition only checks for swipe velocity and not for the distance it was dragged. Happens pretty often to me, not sure if I move my finger slower than other people 😄

Oh, since the last update there's a new one where you can scroll the Feed -> click a post -> hit Back -> you're no longer at the same place in the Feed, you've been reset to the top. Minor, bit annoying. But honestly, it made me feel better about my own regression bugs...
