my longest held belief is that if you’re nearing your middle ages you need to get into a semi-social hobby or creative project quickly otherwise you are more susceptible to rightwing radicalization brain rot content

I can just give you my experience. At 63, I have few friends but a beautiful wife I love with all my heart. There is nothing on this planet that would either cause me to be radicalized by the right or to convert to ANY religion. I avoid ALL cults.

The biggest reason I didn't end up being a right wing shitbag was simple, I don't hate women. Every time I ended up in one of those spaces it would come up and I would remove myself from that space.

Bet - ignoring socializing so I can go to loony land and have fun with all the other old white people fighting DEI things like safe plane rides

I’ve noticed this with my fully disabled dad. I try to talk to him frequently, bc I noticed back in the day that he would start going down these right wing rabbit holes the longer he went without actually checking in and talking to another person

I might be an exception to that as I've lost all but one dear friend over Trump. The dozens of people that I used to call friend all were disrespectful to me about supporting Harris saying have another bong hit or go ride your gay bike. I owe each one a kick in the nuts.

I genuinely think these folks have too much time on their hands. Unfortunately though, some hobby communities have right wing sub groups within them. Knitting and Vintage are two I know from personal experience but I'm sure there are more.

I think they all do nowadays, if you dig deep enough. The only thing anyone can do in any space nowadays is be familiar with the dog whistles and know how to avoid them. Starting a local club with folks you trust is helpful. We have two queer yarn craft groups that meet in safe spaces in my city.

I have a "genius" brother who's involved in lots of activities. Unfortunately, he has always been anti-government, and he watches nothing but Newsmax and Fox. I don't think there's any excuse for not doing some research on donOld and his ilk.

I dunno. My plan of simply eroding from public life entirely and falling into deep depression and panic as my life slowly crumbles to dust seems to be working out okay.

I mean there's studies that when you stop listening or discovering new music your brain starts to calcify - so that explains why people who has Rage Against The Machine on repeat since 98 forget the whole point of the band. I can't help but side eye anyone that says "music sucks these days"

it's frustrating and sometimes sad spending time with some of the older folks in my life because you can really see how over time their lives just get smaller and smaller, and their viewpoints and perspectives shrink along with it

i think that’s a part of that process. crushing depression and loneliness go hand in hand in rightwing radicalization these days. they look for a reason as to why they’re lonely and it can lead them to bad places

They do yeah. Most of my socialization is at work with a bunch of tech freaks where I have to pretend to care about what we are doing. I have to leave the house sometimes to remember that normal people with actual personalities exist

As a tech freak myself, I recommend trying to find a topic about which the both of you can talk about. Stay away from sports, music, art, games, politics. Go for travel, things each of you experienced. Novelty. Feelings, emotions. Street philosophy. Effed up things they are unhappy about.

Not if your depression is accompanied by sufficient guilt and shame. You don't go looking for an external reason you're sad and lonely. You just accept that you're sad and lonely because you are a fundamentally flawed and broken creature that deserves depression and loneliness. 🥰

So many men express depression as anger. Add in lonely and probably suffering from at least 2 painful ailments. So they glom onto anything that gives them a name for their anger.

Yes exactly. Add in lack of education or lack of diversity of thought and it's really easy to see where this stuff comes from. I never fell down the rabbit hole as a teen on the internet with those feelings, but I def got close, and it was everywhere at the time and even now. Hard to avoid

Watched my close relative devolve over the decades into maga. Not the kind with a red hat but the kind that watches Fox News, Newsmax, and OAN exclusively. Their large social group split in two: Republicans and Democrats. They are all immigrants.

Only if you're stupid to start with. Intelligent people vote liberal. Silence IS Complicity. Cooperation IS Collaboration. Keep notes. (Madame Defarge style) Vive la Résistance

If for no other reason than to observe and connect with the evolving next generation. A great deal of conservative angst is they’ve lost track of the culture and the unknown is scary

My friend irl has fallen down alt right rabbit holes. It's very upsetting. He goes to work, plays video games, and watches alt right videos and porn. He says he wants to do stuff like make music. I've yet to see anything from him.

I have ceased attending events for my car hobby due to the overwhelming amount of brainwashed and entitled boomers that populate the events. Instead I've started playing music again with people who are not despicable.

Too bad. You'll probably want to start with something simple like Kill Team then work your way up to full 40k with a relatively robust army like Astartes or Militarum before deciding whether your playstyle suits a more shooting or melee-focussed army. A word on Detachments (THREAD 1/63)

I think the "semi-social" aspect is important. My father is in a very social fly-fishing group and HOO BOY that group is a funnel right into the pipeline. all they do is talk about things while fishing and there's so little discussion about the hobby and mostly it's an excuse to chat.

Fuck no! It takes a shitload of incredibly stupid predjudices that spreads from family to friends and so on,to be that bigoted and hateful in public! It’s disgusting but no I am old inactive and I don’t think that fucked up! I just curse more because fuck covers most of my disgust with it all👇🏻💦🙋🏼‍♀️🙏🏻💙🇺🇸🌎

Well dang, that's another aspect of home ownership that's been lost with all of the not-owning-homes stuff. Taking care of the house was the default parental hobby, from mowing the lawn to making repairs. Hard to get into any of that as a renter.

Homes have been taken from the masses as a giant money laundromat. There are empty buildings and places to live all over the place. The government wants to tax us all to death. Money printer go brrrrrr

Not true for everyone. I keep entirely to myself, until forced by circumstances. I'm approaching 70 and I'm more of a Socialist now than I was when I was young.

My theory: Hobbies & social interaction are good, but… Most extremists (right or left) are already damaged early in their life. They gravitate toward negative crap, aiming to soothe themselves. Sane, level-headed people are far less vulnerable.

Luckily raising my grandkids and now the greatgrandkids doesn't allow me time or the inclination to be a cultist sponge for the orange idiot and his weaklings.

You know, you're on to something I think. How many who are radicalized have little to do but watch/read crap on TV/online? Get out of your house and find something to do. Volunteer. Learn a craft or two. Go to the library. Just DO and BE.

very true, but even for many young people social isolation and incuriosity is a fast track to being susceptible to developing a rightwing pov, because you're view of the world will be largely secondhand and based on only a tiny handful of personal experiences

Now that's just decades of corporate influence into our education systems in both directions The red states focus on teaching revisionist history and giving the control of a curriculum to those who have an interest in making them think It's marginalized people hurting them.

And in the blue States academia is taught that equity and equality is all that matters. And as a result you have an entire two generations of people who think equality is allowing marginalized people to be the leaders of banks and corporations.

Absolutely spot-on. Its universal here in India too, you wil notice many older folks especially post retirement gradually slipping into WhatsApp conspiracy groups or radicalizing Facebook pages. After retirement without a social hobby or creative outlet many elders get vulnerable to misinformation

I don’t think this is it. My parents were very social- golf, cards, lunches etc with friends. And they watched Faux News and were brainwashed and reinforced each others’ beliefs.

I wouldn’t call my folks rich but they definitely had some friends who were. (Think they were jealous of some) . They wouldn’t want to admit it, but they were racist. Basically judgmental… and scared- the BS promoted on Faux news terrified them. They were stupid😞

Had a friend tell me he heads a “dad’s club” at his church where his goal is to get them to socialize and have at least a few numbers in their phone of people they can reach out to

Unsure if I agree it's an age thing. You're right about social hobby- to be sedentary in front of fox, or any tv, is stupefying. But I think it spans all ages. I'm OAF, and ready-radicalized by the turd reich. Raised in the same America that produced 47. I wonder wtf he was paying attention to.

It's funny and I may be too polarized but as i broach my 40s, too much online time has me slavering for unsympathetic wealth redistribution and lone wolf action against fascists and I have to go read "Against the logic of the guillotine" again to calm down.
