i think tech and ai positive people are going to be in for a big shock when anti tech and anti ai sentiment becomes a major part of leftwing politics going forward especially as datacenters continue to destroy communities and raise electricity bills

Is this platform still massively against AI or has it moved more towards acceptance?

I'm learning Data Analytics and want to be a Data Engineer in some industry (probably not tech at this point), and I already have a obscene hatred for AI and the amount of money being thrown at it. I would prefer not using something that would jeopardize people's jobs and livelihoods.

I think there will be some high profile performances of shock but we all know it’s out there and that the worst people in this industry actively court the hate. I just wish the criticism was about the products and problems as they actually exist.

Even right wingers are noticing that tech has become rapidly less usable in the past 2 years. They're even getting pissed at Meta AI slop because the bait pages are based in India or w/e - and they've been repeatedly scammed by dropshippers with their AI panda ads. They'll want blood.

I’ve spent the last 30 years doing networking and web development and everything in between. This is exactly where I am now. I read Dune as a teenager and didn’t understand the Butlerian Jihad. With all that technology why not have computers do everything. But I get it now.

It’s left-reactionary. We should be nationalizing AI tools/datacenters etc. anti-AI is a losing position in the long term because it is very useful for most lower class people. You can list all the reasons you’re better than those who use it and it won’t matter

Stuff like this lets broke/overworked people do what the rich hire experts for: draft letters, decode legal/medical jargon, plan budgets, build basic sites, manage chaos. The issue isn’t people using it, it’s that corporations own it. The left answer is public/worker control.

Tabling for a moment that this is nonsense (within the last 45 minutes you yourself pointed out the shortcomings with chatbot usage for communication), if they can already do all that with LLMs, then it's unclear why corporate ownership holds back precisely the functionality they already display.

Just gasped and almost did the sign of the cross as a reflex over "LLMs let broke people decode legal jargon." Suicidally reckless behavior. I'd tell someone to drive drunk, or use homeopathy instead of chemotherapy, before I'd tell them to use an LLM for legal research.

hey bud, I think you should reconsider your life philosophy. read more, yknow, whatever it takes. bc your kickstarter is dumb as fuck, and thats just according to the basic principles of capitalism. its a poorly conceived idea with very little volume or profit scaling. why should I listen to you?

Same as it ever was, tbh Not long ago Wikipedia was the leftwing devil over Assault Rifle/Armalite Rifle brigades If you're not behind solar and wind energy driven around by little AI/AI adjacent tech then you aren't actually left. Musk and Sama ruined stuff, but now they're gas/coal geezers

Given enough time we'll have open source and home made small language models that (yes, accurately, yes, without hallucinating) teach crochet and organic farming. It's far too useful-yet-horribly-boring to ignore, just like blogs, patreon, wordpress, wikis, reddit, blah blah blah

Yes, you will. The problem of hallucinations is inherent and unsolvable - and, in fact, a feature of LLMs. But that does not mean you can't get deterministic answers. If you ask for a "double puff" a specifically trained crochet model is not going to go ChatGPT on you and talk about birds.

I was at some AI sales conference at Adobe head offices in London. Not by choice I assure you. Specifically asked their main AI guy why LLMs hallucinate and if there’s work being done to solve the problem. Said it wasn’t his department but one of his people would reach out. That was eight months ago

I've seen AI bros make unhinged claims that Human minds are also just statistical predictions of what is the most satisfying outcome. I mean, I can see that it might be the case if someone is an AI-bro and lets ChatGPT do all the thinking for them.

LLMs fundamentally cannot stop hallucinating, because they're just word guessing machines. Also, we have libraries of tens of millions of videos and articles on how to crochet and farm. Having an LLM rewrite it into bullet points doesn't significantly help anyone.

Is this an honest reply or kneejerk? Are you saying you cannot make a small LLM that gives you correct answers? And you think they only output bullet points? I have news A small model can be offline and edge - no need for 10K hours of video. You can get a step-by-step generated with licensed images

Oh, on a side note: Your electric bill isn't *only* data centers. Even though the US and EPA are destroying our solar plans as a country, battery and solar cost is through the floor. As people implement this stuff for themselves your electric bill will go up in response to supply and demand. Sorry.

As somebody who *likes* tech I find this disappointing but deserved. I feel like there's a nearby parallel universe where the California tech boom created a paradise of Liberalism 2.0 instead of a hellscape of Fascism 2.0.... Which I know would be disappointing to those who want Communism 2.0.

I really don’t get people defending a concept that’s basically a data miner and something for stock markets to use to prop up dying markets. Any practical use for it died as soon as investors got their hands on it

ye I've already moved from very pro tech to, destroy literally all of it and lets go back to 1990s tech forever in ~30 years... No internet, no phones, no digital anything. Only bad thing would be regarding healthcare.

I still have to go back to do a full read because I'm a skimmer but these were my favorite stand-out lines: "No vampire was ever as thirsty." The transgender computer geeks are, by volume, some of the most creative, interesting, and prolific contributors we’ve ever had." Thank you for this 🩶

The problem is AI has sucked the air out of the entire tech industry I go to tech blogs and the news is just more AI crap All of the big tech companies gave up innovating to chase their General Purpose Knowledge Worker Replacement that doesn't work

I mean, I am tech positive. I work in tech and lemme tell ya, just a crumb of understanding some of this shit makes you feel like you're in the Twilight Zone with everyone lauding what is basically a significant increase in data processing speed as a revolutionary technology.

This shit is turning me into an old crank. I feel like there has been no feasible innovation in 15 years. Went shopping for a washing machine recently. Almost half of new ones are smart devices or have "ai". Motherfucker, we figured out washing machines like 50 years ago.

True they can't do math, but they can write, test, execute code that does math for an arbitrary use case. Not saying the hype is justified or the way AI is used isn't destructive but that criticism is missing why.

see this is the problem though. there are actually useful technologies being made. but instead of treating it like experimental early tech that needs to be refined, we are injecting trillions of dollars into it and just hoping for the best. tech bros, as always, ruin potentially interesting tech.

At some point people are going to get mad and start protesting if not sabotaging these AI data centers... The one for Elon's thing in tenn or where ever is supposedly poisoning the air and water of the nearby towns.

Lately the people who rely on LLMs seem like they're letting themselves become dumber and crueler. Noticed a couple people assert some wild evil bullshit. Get called out. Then as a double down they'll post screenshots of unrelated AI summaries, and demand that people use chatGPT.

Feels like the logical conclusion for these dorks is to let their pokemon chatbots duel it out in the comments while they take credit for reams of specious reasoning no one reads

yeup. and lots of good is going to be taken out in the crossfire. and it's ENTIRELY on the people who blindly push it now. when people start to feel any AI is repulsive because of how it's pushed, you can't suddenly be surprised when people want to get rid of all AI.

When I watch the videos of community meetings about AI powerplants, most of the people are folksy older people in vests and hoodies. I think both sides are coming in hot against this stuff.

They want to create Deep Thought from the Hitchhiker's Guide books, to tell them the meaning of life and how we all should live. What happens when the LLM tells them to promote socialist policies to maximize human happiness and minimize suffering? Grok is what happens when you try to un-leftify AI.

Honestly way more likely than a lot of people here are willing to admit I'd wager - and not just due to hallucinations (more likely of the batch though). Doesn't require conceding an anti-AI stance: If people had to rank them - which of the two are smarter? The billionaires or the AI?

Right? Even the types of AI aren’t built the same, a data-crunching medical AI is less destructive and significantly more useable than every LLM AI and Generative AI, but all types of ML, AI, and other tech will fully fall with the shitty LLM’s and such

all I'm getting out of those data centers is shitposts. to hell with them! stuff like Embark Studio's text to speach or Bethesda Game Studios' terrain generation don't require such power; and that is all actual creatives need.

The rhetorical flourish of "the cloud" being conceptualized as immaterial and unlocalized really has done a number on tech people. I think most simply don't engage with AI beyond being curious about tinkering with it

I'm literally running for congress to pass a "technology bill of rights" that will ban most AI and establish extremely strict rules around it for the future. The voters in my district support the idea greatly as our power bills in michigan have skyrocketed due to data centers.

I don't think that anti tech *as a whole* will become a major part of it, anti corporate tech/pro tech reduction (not sure how to word it better) sure will

I don’t gate the technology. I hate the oligarchs shoving it down our throat and taking our energy. The technology is cool and interesting, but just back off and let it develop at its own pace without a bunch of assholes, trying to make billions off of it.

I grew up in tech, I made my living in it and I’m totally OK with what you’re saying. The power thing is just not cool. Nothing about what the technology does is worth sucking up that much power.

what’s funnier to me are the maximalists who convince themselves to stay on twitter or hook up with bigots because they think “techlash” actually has any effect on policy

because this is actually the opinion of a small group of people who don't understand that the alternative to data centers isn't as utopian as they think. quite frankly I think the better question is "what evidence is there to support this" because it's not much

"datacenters" is maybe a bit terse, but being against using "a datacenter's worth of power for a C-level to spin up 40 'agents' vibe coding garbage 24/7" is actually kind of good

Degrowth needs to win. I'm sorry, but we cannot cover all the prairies and deserts in solar panels and call it progress while they power water-polluting slop machines that require giant strip mine pits to fuel their chip needs. Those are habitats we are destroying. We need to have less.

Dem politicians seem okay with selling out to these companies if it benefits them, so a party wide anti-AI stance would have to come with an overhaul of the party/U.S. election system, which I hope comes sooner rather than later.

I'm already seeing some folks On Here fuming about the lefty luddites hating anything even remotely AI-based, and it's like... the people in charge of those industries are making it real hard to mount a defense, even by people who actually know how to use machine learning ethically

"but what about inventing new medicines, identifying diseases, helping with accessibility, searching deep space photos etc" "yeah, all the people with actual influence in the industry have chosen to sideline all that for worse customer support and search engines that lie"
