TIL that for some people with irreparably damaged corneas, you can pull one of their teeth, drill a hole in it, install an artificial lens, sew it into their cheek (so tissue attaches), then pull it out and stick it in their damaged eye, and ... it works fine!?! www.nbcboston.com/news/health/...

An Italian doctor in the 60s noticed that if something ends up inside a tooth root canal, it will just stay there, and not get rejected. The problem with most implants is rejection; your eye will reject a plastic lens, but not a tooth, and the tooth won't reject the lens, so it acts as a medium

At the end of the day we are just machines of meat. It's about knowing how the bits of the machine operate that one can use that operation to bodge a solution together. This is essentially a cyborg eye lense they make out of a tooth.

It's amazing. What's a cornea? A lens. So replace the lens. But how do you hold it? What in the body can hold foreign objects without triggering an immune response? A tooth. So put a lens in a tooth. It's obvious when it's laid out but I can't imagine how somebody thought to do it.

Also also I just tried reading this post (skeet) out loud and my 14 yr old interrupted me to say they already knew all about it and "yeah it's a THING, mom. It was all over Tiktok for a while. Cool right?" 😏
