this is the really ineffective head-in-the-sand reaction a lot of folks on Bluesky tend to have if you talk about any harm reduction-based approach to the reality that millions of people are using AI tools today. The current approach to critiquing AI is obviously not working, but they don't care.

Some gems in this thread, like "You are a stupid person" out of the blue. Oh really? You're the one subscribed to listifications and taking them seriously enough to make a post. Genuinely, the lesson of this post for you should be "unsubscribe from listifications" if anything.

One another Bluesky lesson is that people want to put their head in the sand wrt certain kinds of lines of reasoning, and it tends to work out well when you give them the ability to do so. Sorry you got muted. If you want emotional satisfaction, put them on "puts me on stupid lists" list, works 4 me

Hell that's entirely possible, you might've had previous interactions aplenty for all I know, but it looks entirely uncharitable to your own arguing chops in the context of this thread, especially given it shows up at the top in threading view. (also, 🙏 listifications can be mind poison, seriously)

Turns out decentralization wasn’t enough and we might need to fix the UX if we’re going to fix social. The 🙉🙈 experience is definitely proving to be a failed experiment.

That’s my fear; it will permanently enshittify things for the benefit of a handful of jerks rather than just go away. Although I have yet to see LLMs actually work; they don’t increase productivity or produce valuable products, like, at all, and they are very expensive.

I think one of the reasons this argument doesn't always persuade tech folks (putting aside the shills and those with vested interests) is because coding is one of the areas where it *does* very often increase productivity.

Who will pay to run inference when not a single company doing that, or even building a tool on top of it, makes a profit from it? To be clear there’s literally no evidence to date that any company is getting profit from LLM inference and mounting evidence that it’s not possible.

No one should be endorsing or using a fascist scam that wastes exponential energy at the worst time in our climate's history. Especially as an intended tool for manipulation, indoctrination, and minority control. Ignoring also the built in regression loop from modeling its own slop tainted data.

Repeating and teaching them the truth that they are being manipulated and indoctrinated with their education undermined for an existentially destructive climate threatening scam that cannot be stopped from regressing further into slop. Those "millions of people" will get over losing it at that cost

Blocking ppl who are not intolerant, bc they voice details, context & nuance wch is offered to reduce harm, is the real "Blueskyism." It's Nietzsche's idea abt fighting monsters/staring into the abyss. Bluesky is the abyss & some start seeing monsters in everyone, thus becoming monsters themselves.

Bluesky itself *exists* because people broadly understood that social media then, as with AI now, was having a wide variety of negative effects on society. So teaching people about less damaging approaches had a lot of value and has been effective in giving millions of people better alternatives.

By contrast, scolding people with moralizing about their choices, especially when *all of us are using tech from companies that have already carried out harms as serious as genocide* is ineffective, and pushes them to the welcoming arms of fascist tech companies who will be nice to them instead.

I agree with the intellectual substance of virtually every common critique of AI. And it's very clear that turning those critiques into a competition about who can frame them in the most scathing way online has done *zero* to slow down adoption, even if much of that is due to default bundling.

At what point are folks going to try literally any other tactic than condescending rants? Does it matter that LLM apps are at the top of virtually every app store nearly every day because individual people are choosing to download them, and the criticism hasn't been effective in slowing that?

Defining some development standards for A.I projects in your company is helpful. Things like archiving prompts for genai builds, preserving non a.i APIs , requiring a.i specific pentests , having a flow chart for when and when not to a.i. etc..

I get so tired of the notion that we (people) should not be scolded for our choices. Life has funny way of letting you know whether or not your choice was right. Sometimes it takes the arc of time to reveal the answer. But time is a finite resource so we should be far more mindful about our choices.

Nobody is saying that people shouldn’t be scolded for their choices. What is being said is that scolding people for their choices is a piss-poor way to get them to change those choices.

Was social media forced into schools? It’s my impression ppl have worked really hard to keep social media out of schools bc of perceived harms to kids. You sound like Dems saying “yes cops kill too many ppl but ‘defund the police‘ is inflammatory. We can harm reduce by giving cops more money!”

This def sounds like something an “AI apologist” would say. Did all the school boards buy YouTubes without understanding it, force teachers to use it without knowing whether it’s at all efficacious in the classroom?

If a whole industry has become committed to its proliferation, there's really little people without the cash needed to make alternatives can do apart from saying it's a piece of shit. You can tell folks about sensible uses, but it's sure not what the service providers are constantly pushing.

You and Masnick are both are pushing technology you KNOW to be dangerous to people. You can pretend you want some non-dangerous version, but there's no such thing. You guys just want to be on the hype train with your buddies, and you don't care who gets hurt. Classic silicon valley shitheads.

Nah. Let people control their online experience. Some of us don't want to hear about AI here on Bluesky (say, because we spend too much time on LinkedIn already). I think it's very petty from you to write this whole thread just because someone decided that they don't want you to appear on their TL.

I don’t give a fuck about being blocked, I wish more people would block or mute me. What bothers me is that people don’t want to be effective in changing what’s happening around AI. They’d rather rant than talk to their own family members and engage with them on what motivates their usage.

Sorry but we are allowed to rant about our family consuming fast fashion, eating too much meat, and using GenAI, without necessarily having to engage with them every single time. And also: it's not their fault, but the system's. You might be misguided about what's "effective" and what isn't.

The core issue is that a lot of people who hate LLMs hate it because of the impact on their lives. LLMs let people who dump their work onto to others half-ass their jobs at a higher speed and level of stupidity, and it's reasonable to find that frustrating.

There is value in the overall tools for doing the drudge work of, for example, creating a survey form, which is my primary use for it. But the resources going into saving me ten minutes may not be worth the squeeze here.

Some BlueSky folks think they killed NFTs by making them cringe and pointing out energy waste when in fact NFTs mostly collapsed because "make pictures people don't want artificially scarce" was a weak concept. But "Make the exact picture people DO want basically free" is a very different animal.

Remain skeptical a) that it is a picture that people want beyond trying out the novelty of it, what with it usually being spatially incoherent and at best still looking unoriginal, and b) how long it'll stay "basically free"

I actually agree you're not gonna scold most people out of using AI, but I do think in many ways the extreme hype is almost as silly as NFTs were, in that neither is organic

I basically refuse to talk about the subject online (I'm breaking my rule now) because of how toxic the conversations get. Which I think is sad, because I think there are interesting debates to be had, but just not here.

Is there anything in between "pledge fealty to LLMs" and "decry anyone who uses ChatGPT as an environment destroying fascist collaborator and block them", or is that where we're at these days?

You did not! But the "AI Apologists" moderation list Anil is referring to is indeed the kind of thing often used for that, and that is the AI discourse we seem to have on Bluesky: entirely lacking in nuance.

I ended up on an AI block list for saying something along the lines of AI isnt going anywhere, we should be looking for useful applications in things like robotics instead of just trying to shut it down. I'd rather steer the ship the right direction than sink it.

Blocking is good! I wish more folks would block me, that’s not the issue. Refusing to engage with the millions of folks using these tools has been a losing strategy that’s done nothing to a slow adoption or to teach people about potential risks or harms; that’s the thing I’m actually lamenting here.

There was a larger conversation going on prior to that; I am assuming you likely encountered that post in isolation because somebody wanted to dunk on it. It’s far from the entirety of the point I was making, or even a particularly significant part of it.

There’s an MLSky feed but talking about anything but AI harms on main just doesn’t work. It’s one reason (perhaps?) that X stays relevant for tech. Because where else will people discuss actual AI research?

I mean, Look at who the CEOs are cozying up to. It doesn’t matter how much foundational work or research is done if the ones directly in control of weightings want a techno-fascist regime. Look at what Meta’s AI is doing with minors. The space for agentic AI and LLMs is tainted the same as crypto

I feel there is some selection bias occurring. I try to showcase both AI wins and where it has gone wrong in medicine. There’s a bigger appetite for anti vs pro AI news. That’s why I’m trying to build more spaces for community to grow and have nuanced conversations, and avoid animosity and vitriol.

Been debating writing my "AI is not going away" article about why people reacting with the "shut it all down" response are making it more difficult for people who want to build better user-empowering AI tools

Folks assume that in order to become profitable, AI cos must drastically cut quality or raise prices (i.e. the colloquial usage of enshittification) without fully grasping that enshittified platforms like Uber and Facebook aren't collapsing under the weight of their own contradictions anytime soon.

Lot of folks also don't fully appreciate how much progress has been made on the NOT data-center-hungry version of AI. You can run a surprising amount of stuff on your own machine for basically the cost of playing on an Xbox.

People just know that "build[ing] better user-empowering AI tools" is just horseshit. That's not what's going to happen and everyone knows it. You guys keep acting like it's impossible to get rid of dangerous technology that hurts people, but we've done it before or you'd be brushing with radium.

I don’t keep acting like that, I’m literally arguing for tactics that are *more* likely to achieve that goal. Bluesky did not get adoption by going on Twitter & shitting on people. Ghost & Buttondown are not getting adoption by telling Substack users they’re scumbags. Engaging with users is *good*.

But you aren't trying to get rid of it. Instead you're promising a non-dangerous version and that doesn't exist. You are putting a sugar coating on a poison pill. No one's saying you have to go yell at AI bros, but you're actively supporting it, and that's different.

Ok but, regardless of which tactic is actually superior, in what way is the maximalist critique stopping anyone from building these so-called user-empowering AI tools? Also this is conjecture but I think ghost absolutely benefits from people making up rude names for substack users.

Agreed. It’s really demoralizing for the people fighting for responsible AI within these companies. And if they get bullied and shamed into leaving the industry, things can and will get MUCH worse.

The idea that “better tools” can solve massive social problems like LLMs seems like a category error. The problem with LLMs isn’t that people aren’t empowered enough - so what on earth would empowering people solve?

Who is saying shut it all down? I think even the most vocal critics believe it has important uses. The critique is that the American approach to applying it to all aspects of life is fucking idiotic.

What important uses? The mass adoption of calling everything AI is already a shell game, because nobody knows if you're talking about rote automation, machine learning, an LLM, picture and video generation, or something else. The first two have shown usefulness. Generative uses are a novelty.

I consider all of those things to be AI. You have correctly pointed out that the marketing strategy used by silicon valley to push this new crop of LLMs by making them synonymous with AI is part of the problem here. Of course AI itself was first coined as a marketing term itself.

Every time I mention AI here, my replies are filled with people saying it should be all shut down, no one should ever use it, it has no reasonable uses. I literally just blocked someone saying that to me.

Some guy elsewhere in this thread was talking about firebombing data centers and preventing people from using LLMs “by force.” AI always seems to cause people a few hinges short of a working door to lose the ones they have instantly.

Yeah that reaction is driven by the ways that this current batch of LLMs have been pushed across all sectors of society. If you want to blame someone for that blame Sam Altman et al because they are the ones who created this backlash.

It just feels like we're being forced to toss all our AI $ and talent into a rabbit hole that will never and could never produce results so that others can make progress at our expense.

Yeah I mean, even just the alt text labeling tool here on Bluesky, or the abusive content detection, are both very useful positive things.

I mean, there is. And there can be more. So this is exactly the kind of interaction Anil and I are talking about as being extraordinarily counterproductive.

I mean, there are two use cases for AGI, one is to destroy jobs and transfer wealth from labor to capital, and the other one is to enhance labor productivity. Guess which one the "big four" are focused like lasers on right now? I get it.

Well, no, not if someone will come and write my iPhone apps for me, a retired sysadmin who can tell the AI what to do, more or less like a jr dev in another country, and it does it. I assemble the pieces and have a program I could never ever have created on my own. I feel pretty fukcing empowered!

I mean, it bears saying that 'better user-empowering AI tools' simply will not be using LLMs for the things that we currently use them for. Current AI addicts are running towards a cliff, if only because AI can't make money so their tools WILL go away.

It's really hard to think "ya, this is going to work out" when it's the most expensive investment in technology ever and no one seems to do anything but toss more money into it. I don't get how it's going to exist like it does now if no one can make money on it.

I would like it to slow down until data centers don't create an energy crunch paid for by residential consumers, bleed entire communities dry of water resources, or contribute to global warming. There's no current ethical way to use AI even before answering questions on their actual usefulness.

I'm sorry you have come to my thread to support the original authors point about non-empirical anti-ai no thoughtism. Oh look I went on google scholar and found an article about proposing classes of drugs to manufacture and research to find particular beneficial effects in patients.

okay hear me out - all us real nerds are milking this bubble to make gooder tech we know the bubble is gonna pop. a $4 trillion market cap on Nvidia is nonsense you'll take a dip on your 401k but when tf don't you? some hedge fundies will jump off the roof (bonus?) and your job will get easier 👍

I'm begging you just give me 6 more months on the juice 😜 all AI is gonna do is make you scream less at your stupid computer and all these dipshit companies that think they can replace their customer service department with AI will eat an entire mountain of shit I can't replace you. period.

The vehement, absolutist arguments against AI probably aren't going away, any more than AI is! So the 2nd-order appeal you're making may not persuade. I'm fwiw as LLM-hostile as most academics, but there is much I don't know, and I learn useful stuff from you and Mike M. Thanks.

Trying to ban AI at this point is as absurd as trying to ban computers. It is not only a bad idea, it is essentially _impossible_. Advocating for things like taxing energy usage in data centers makes more sense.

Local governments don't really like it when you go in and pay people US-standard wages because they don't want all their doctors, government workers, etc to quit and become data annotators

I'm sure there are examples of when outcry has stemmed exploitation of Africans by the developed world, but I'm having trouble recalling when the last time was (perhaps boycotting Coke and Shell during apartheid?). But are data labelers worse off than kids at cobalt mines in DRC, for our batteries?

Harm-reduction based approaches are what the Democratic party has done for decades. It always fails. When the Democrats lose power, these weak protections get rolled back and things get significantly worse. i.e. gun control, healthcare, voting rights...

This also ignores the fact that AI is being run by the richest people on earth who are all currently cozing up to a dictator who wants to occupy American cities. Messaging is important, we should never scold, but the messaging should focus on the sources and going after them.

Like here you go: "Billionaires are currently spending trillions of dollars on unproven technology that is wrong over 50% of the time and is causing your utility bills to double in price, with the potential of rolling blackouts happening more and more frequently."

Don't scold people using AI. It's the politicians who are letting this happen. Scold them and vote out anyone who is not putting up severe guardrails that cannot be easily rolled back. And most importantly, democratize the hell out of it. Let's not repeat the same mistakes of social media.

When you figure it out, I'd love to hear it, because this week I had my team lead recommending one of the new tools and when I went to read over it sounded like if you enabled everything fancy it does you were setting yourself up for lethal trifecta/prompt injection vulnerabilities.

Pointing this out got me a shrug & it was absolutely dispiriting, because I'm trying to engage with these tools that work inconsistently, because it's all the rage with my coworkers and leadership. I put up with phishing pen tests because security is important to us, but now it doesn't matter?

(The shrug being quite literally a shrug emoji!) & this doesn't even go into the nervous feeling I get about how we're a nonprofit & I can't even imagine what's going to happen when these subscription costs start to reflect what it actually costs to provide it with investor returns.

Is this.. you’re not fully anti AI i.e. you support some uses of it with guardrails, regulation and hard limits? I spent some real time trying to figure this and still am not sure

The upside, from my selfish perspective, is that being on these AI blocklists makes it possible to have calm, productive conversations on bsky with a lot of other people interested in AI good fences, good neighbors

Harm reduction! Of course. I sat through a meeting with my academic colleagues pleading for caution and describing the potential harm. That is the phrase I needed.
