DOUTHAT: Let's be honest -- the tone of the administration is not consistently a Christian tone. There is a tone of aggressive uncharity JD VANCE: Tonal arguments are ways of, frankly, policing working class ways of communication, and covering them in elite preferences

The term, "tonal," has no functioning application to any argument offered here. There is no discussion of musical harmony, nor inflections in vocal cadence. Vance is a midwit imitating his imbecile cult leader.

True. But the Trump supporters' rhetoric is ALSO a way to "appeal to the masses" in order to win over the working class. It's also a strategy of the elite. And it's as old as ancient Greece, under the term "demagoguery."

Is JDV saying that the aggressive, uncharitable language Douthat refers to is a hallmark of working class speech? Because my working class parents taught me that that kind of language is ignorant and rude, and not because some elites were “policing” them either.

He's not saying anything, he's just mixing up random words and trying to sound "smart". It's the kind of mind-numbing incoherent dreck you'd hear from a marketing department in a meeting you are forced to attend where you wonder afterward how they managed to get a job.

JD may be right. The rubes elected Trump and this silly hillbilly douche. It'd be nice if more of them were "working class", and not "sit at home swallowing FOX News, stewing in hate while they give the GOP a free pass on corruption" class.

If working class ways of communicating aren't in a Christian tone, they aren't in a Christian tone and need to change. As Pres, VP or any other elected position, YOU SET THE EFFING TONE. You are by position ELITE, AND YOU ARE A MODEL TO THE REST OF THE SOCIETY YOU LEAD. Seriously, this man is trash.

Douthat isn't critiquing an accent or a lack of polish — he's talking about cruelty, dishonesty, or contempt for others, which aren't exactly working class virtues either. Vance is deflecting a substantive challenge by making it about class identity.

And the implication here is that JD Vance is well-versed in "working class ways of communication?" So claiming that legal and invited Haitian immigrants are eating people's pets is a way a working class individual described these people?

Funny how I could destroy Vance's counter-argument with one sentence that immediately came to mind and yet Douthat let's him win the point. Am I really that much smarter than Douthat?

America: You don't need to kill Americans to enforce border policy. JD: That rhetoric causes violence. Trump: Everyone who isn't white is a dog. JD: You really can't police language, it's not fair to whites. It doesn't invite violence.

The “Christian” label is just a shield for political purposes. The ideological tells align with Aryanism — the fixation on reproduction, the obsession with “breeding projects,” and the delusional idea of reproducing with what they imagine is the “root stock” of a mythical white race.

When it happens, the GOP will fight for power amongst themselves. No one will support this guy. We all know it. He's the only one who thinks he's relevant, which makes him even less appealing, if that's possible.

World: We are all offended when Trump calls people ‘Horseface’ (Stormy), refers to ‘Shithole countries’ (e.g., African nations), or says he’s ’Glad’ someone is dead (e.g., Mueller). Vance: I’ve had enough of your Elite tonal preferences.

The regime is full of hypocrites who use religious language to control their base full stop No one gives a flying floosey what eyeliner has to say because all he does is lie. We barely know his real name.

Great stuff here: (a) The Nazis have gone full post-structuralist, apparently? (b) Christians don't have to love their neighbor or do any of that woke stuff if they're working class. (c) Donald Trump is working class somehow.

if there were two people who i took less intellectually seriously in the same room, recording a podcast for the nyt (of all things), it would be stunning.

That's a piss poor softball of a question, framed so Vance can keep fighting the stupid culture wars. A real interviewer would challenge Vance on the admin's horrible policies in relation to their supposed "Christian values"

This administration - and all the pundits and influencers who launder it - have this view that working class ppl are naturally vulgar, cruel, impulsive, and impolite. It’s like their only understanding of working class ppl is through Dickensian stereotypes.

I've no time for Vance's attempt at flip sophistry here. This administration is without charity, without compassion, without empathy, and the idea that he handwaves that away as "elitism" only makes it worse because it's clear he's conscious of it - it's not unthinking. He *knows* it's wrong.

Oh yeah, that famous Jesus motto: for every uncharitable, unchristian thing you say or do, all shall be forgiven if ye balance it with something nice. Like Jesus only asks that you act Christian-like some of the time and just to those people you really like and want to be nice to. Is that right?

The level of disingenuousness every time he opens his mouth is positively creepy. I guess that’s what happens when you sell out you soul to someone you once compared to Hitler…

What a delightful word salad non-answer (and slick promotion of his book, totally the whole reason he's doing this media blitz totally not because the President is dying and our Vice President is a complete unknown to most Americans, no sir).

EVERYBODY hates him. I mean nobody who actually knows Trump will really miss him when he is gone either, but there are millions of people who adore Trump. Vance doesn't even have a mother to love him.

More specifically on his point that in politics you will sometimes say things that are wrong or incorrect but you could also play clips of him saying Christian things. My man, you basically initiated a war of words with the Pope. That’s not an oopsie slip. You had control of that message.

Actual Christianity values the self-sacrifice of FEELING infinite empathy for living things. Morally, it SHOULD follow science-based harm reduction to reduce suffering in the world. In practice, it can love greed more than love. Fascism values dehumanizing life for profit and control.

Hahahaha please run him in 28. Apply mascara with a thumb, sound more hoity, be impossibly glib. I'm waiting for the first reporter to ask what the floating countdown above Vance's head means.

We should all aspire to have the values of the working class because that is the truest expression of charity, America, Christ, etc... also they are vulgar rubes who can't abide by cultural niceties

What disdain and lack of understanding this guy has of working class. In his mind, the working class are the stereotype of an unsophisticated rube who grunts and curses their way through life instead of people expressing charity and compassion for family and neighbor

The kind of thing you say when you are trying to defend a bad position by not actually say anything coherent but you want to sound intellectual in saying the incoherent shit.

What gets me is how often basic decency gets dismissed as some elite obsession. You don’t have to be rich, educated, religious, or secular to recognize cruelty when you see it. Most ordinary people do it every day.

But then they say the reverse when it's convenient for them, positing that ruthlessness is natural and how you succeed. A video title I saw once stated it pretty well. It's hard dealing with people that don't have any ideals.

That’s what always feels backwards to me. Since when did basic respect become an elite value? Most people I grew up around didn’t have much money, but they still knew the difference between strength and needless cruelty.

Since the goal has become to make kindness and compassion antifascist thought crimes. By tying decorum to the 'elitist left', you absolve the in-group of guilt for its outright racism, bigotry, mysogynism and verbal abuses by framing it as unmitigated honesty and straight talk

I just hate that the working definition of the phrases “working class” and “elite“ mean nothing anymore, because our whole nation just uses right wing in-group speak now without making it clear to everyone that’s what’s happening. ‘Working class” is white men, “elites” is everyone else.

When respect was over time extended to anyone other than white heterosexuals. Woke was originally synonymous with this extended application of respect but was turned on its head by bigots to be "elitist," when as the word says is simply a term for enlightenment.

What makes it effective is that nobody has to openly defend cruelty. They only have to redefine it as strength. Once that happens basic empathy stops looking normal and starts looking like weakness.

It’s always funny how we’re asked to believe basic empathy and common courtesy are some elite invention. Most working class people I know would be embarrassed to treat others the way some of these politicians do in public.

It's the ordinary people of Minnesota helping our immigrant neighbors last winter. It wasn't "elites" driving scared children to school or dropping off food for families too frightened to leave their own home. I

They’re attempting to normalize cruelty. “Only an elitist would ‘police’ the language of the common man.” JDs not stupid. He knows what he’s doing.

OK, maybe kidnapping migrants and sending them to torture prisons in El Salvador is so “tonally un-Christian.” But you know what? That’s just the way working class people communicate and to hell with you elites who don’t like it!

I hadn't realized that Christian charity was elitist. And love is just a way of policing the working class. I mean, Vance says so and he is such a smart man who never, ever lies.

To be fair, a sentence like that would never come out of Trumps mouth. He wouldn’t even know what it meant. It’s why he is perceived as “authentic” even though he is actually just stupid.
