This page basically says that not a single game written for the ZX Spectrum, on which a large chunk of the UK games industry was originally built, was good enough to be on this list. Which is bollocks.

The UK is certainly where it was most popular, to the point where “Zed-Ex” is the common pronunciation even in the US But it’s pretty broadly celebrated by retro game enthusiasts worldwide— my guess it only evaded the GOAT list bc the games weren’t as widely recognized while they were still current

It was sold by Timex in the US, no? You would have thought that a considered list would be written by gaming journalists who knew the background. Here, you read down and USA Today gets 3 votes, Esquire gets 3 votes etc because it's actually a consolidation of lots of "best games ever, ranked!" lists

Ain't no way Dragon Quest 8 is the only DQ on there.... Overwatch? How about they keep the list to games that actually exist. Also worth noting that there are less and less notable games as the years progress past the 2000s. Actually that checks out.

I guess Lode Runner isn’t that good? The only one of these games I’ve really hated is Devil May Cry, and that’s probably because I was playing wrong. I like bad games too much, I’m a lot better at hating popular TV shows. Do TV next time pls. (Heavy Rain also looks bad)

the oregon trail was boring enough to me as a kid that even though they had it on the school computers i played the math facts game in the computer lab instead

I played it for an hour, and I hated every bit of it, so I stopped Then every friend of mine spent the next month harassing me saying "no it gets better after 50 hours." Id rather play an actually good game for 50 hours

THANK YOU. Someone said it. MM4 and 5 eat 2's lunch any second of any day, and I will also never understand the allure that was MM2 Wily 1 OST. It's *so* boring especially comparing it to the later games, but even MM3 Wily 1 had killer melodic movement and blew it out of the water

Heavy Rain is easily the worst on this list. While most games make you feel like heroes, athletes, or deities, Heavy Rain makes you feel like a desperate actor on the set of a straight-to-DVD movie. It’s shameful that Cage was treated like an auteur for adapting his terrible screenplays into games.

No but guys game overs are a failure of the game design. God, ever since the Super Best Friends playthrough, that phrase has been stuck in my head. But yeah, I'm pretty sure Cage openly said (it was either about this one or Beyond: Two Souls) to not play the game a second time.

I love this game :p it's strange and off-kilter and bleary in the best ways. It's hard to explain. I don't think it's an exceptional top of the line game or anything but it's a personal favourite of mine

mmm, no. hades isn't a roguelike, it's a rogueLITE. roguelites are DEFINED by meta progression. if you want to blame a game for the proliferation of roguelites displacing roguelikes, uhhhhh... blame like, Rogue Legacy? Hades was WAY late to the party, it joined a well-established subgenre.

The only Midway game that should be on there is Ms Pac-Man. The others are all aimed at totally extreeeeeeeme 1990s edgelord 13-year-olds and have no artistic merit.

Very mixed. I quite liked Abby's story, which surprised me. Ellie, on the other hand, made so many stupid decisions and acted so childish that I genuinely hate her more than most characters in gaming.

Heavy Rain has some cool noir vibes, a few memorable scenes, although one is a blatant Saw rip off, and absolutely nothing else, unless you count how fucking funny it is sometimes.

Of the games I've actually played: Deus Ex. I think I'd love this game if the controls weren't a nightmare. Everything else about it looks really fun, but when I tried to play it, I felt like I was fighting the controls. Might see later on if I can find a mod or something to work around that

I will say, I love Baldur's Gate 3, but like 80% of the reason I love it comes from me mentally filling in gaps that the game itself refuses to fill, and I'm not sure whether that's a good or a bad thing. Also, the inventory system is genuinely painful to navigate.

Elden Ring (open world slop that directly undermines a lot of the design principles of the souls games) Baldurs Gate 3 (5e is a dogshit system and Larian did their fucking best with it but it's still just such a disappointment of a cRPG) I didnt even mean to choose the two most recent lmao

Shenmue - I wanted to love this JRPG soo much, the open world was next level for the time, cinematic storytelling - chef's kiss, marred by the overlay slow pacing and focus on mundane activities and the fact that it's unfinished as game experience.

The Walking Dead - go away... just go away whomsoever decided to capitalize on the zombie survival craze after it was soo bloated and boring and slapping in the beloved tell-tales style experience - GULAG NOW! - Technical issues - buggy to boot - Narrative issues with phasing (IN A TELT...)

Before I being my list: I saw some of chucklefarts shitting on Dota and Borderlands - take your cold meds and go to bed, poop munchers you will never understand the Mystery, Majesty and Beauty of a MEAT TRICYCLE JUST FOR TWOOOO (borderlands ref.) Dota is pure unicorn cocaine no need to defend.

I think one thing the original Borderlands did better than any of its followups was the guns. It was the game that really ran with having 'a million gazillion guns' and didn't fall back on strange manufacturer quirks like the games from 2 on did, and in a looter shooter I do think the loot counts

Ok I'll bite. While KH2 is not groundbreaking or changed anything meaningful in the medium like RE4 or SOTC, I think it is still a great game with solid combat, a good mix of platforming and action and lots of fun cameos and references.

I am very biased and I can see the argument for why people thought of it as a slow experience or not as good as some of the other games in the series. It certainly started a downward trend in the story. But as a game I think it still holds up and has merits as one of the best Action RPGs ever made.

eh, after beating it for an 11th time, I can see the criticisms. There’s not all that much going on with the progression, some of the story flags just feel like opaque padding, even the close camera that I like can be incredibly disruptive when playing on the original 4:3.

Damn right. Like a normal person 2-3 times a year I google if there are any good pirate games I missed and it's always "Oh there's this really good looking one but it's actually about silly non-time-travel with Templars and you jump off building a lot"

The whole meta-plot about time-regression DNA whatever is so pointless and does nothing but detract from the game, I don't need a shitty Z-grade Asylum movie sci-fi plot in my historical murder game just let me be cool assassin guy without forcing godawful Uwe Boll cutscenes on me.

I can make an argument about how the first level of BioShock is one of the best introductory levels of a videogame in terms of pacing and teaching a player 90% of the mechanics they will use over the rest of the game. Can't really defend the rest of it, other than the Sander Cohen section.

100%, bioshock starts so so strong and does a lot of great and interesting stuff but it just gets worse the longer it goes along. it's twist is effective, sure, but putting it on the same level as the twists in silent hill 2, dead space, FF7 or literally any metal gear solid game is laughable to me.

That kinda gets to my main complaint about Bioshock (to be honest, though, I did quite enjoy the game as a whole). It ends up feeling more like a disparate series of levels than it does an underwater city gone to hell, and nothing after the introduction really matches it in being the later.

Less targeted hate more just kind of marveling but man the distance between hearthstone the game that everyone decided saved card games and hearthstone the oh yeah that hasn't EoSed yet is kind of staggering

[puffing a huge bubble pipe] These days we're lucky if the games industry can produce one best game of all time per year. Makes you think...

I don't think there's any in particular I hate, maybe some I feel indifferent towards like the call of duty series. Most I hate about those is more to do with them being the poster child of the growing bloat of hardware and storage space demands AAA has been spiraling down.

Heavy rain and BioShock Infinite really take the cake here for worst. Heavy rain is a David Cage game, that man doesn't know how to write. BioShock Infinite didn't know what game it was and ended up with an unsatisfying story and gameplay that felt out of place in the setting.

I agree, massively underrated game despite being inbetween 2 very popular games. But I’m also a Heavy Rain defender. I really enjoyed it and thought it was extremely memorable. Also created one of the best meme videos ever. But short of best games

Personally I don't get the hate on TLOU, but yeah there was loads of great games in 2013. Mario 3D World, Tomb Raider (reboot), MGR: Revengance, Outlast, A Link Between Worlds, Saints Row 4, Pikmin 3, Stanley Parable, Gone Home, Dragons Crown, Rayman Legends, Xcom

breath of the wild and ocarina of time. for botw, I'm just a durability hater, you spend half the game in menus swapping weapons and standing around doing the mental calculus of whether you replace your damaged good weapons with non-damaged bad ones.

for oot, I just thought it was mid. I always preferred 2d zeldas, so I never liked the move to 3d. I also played mega man legends first as a teenager, so playing oot like a year or two later felt like a big downgrade.

there's a lot I like about BotW but Nintendo was seriously like "you know what the *best* thing about Pokemon Go is? constantly replacing pokeballs in your inventory." the core experience of the game is watching a 10 second chest-opening animation and then being told you can't carry more swords.

Grand Theft Auto 1 and Civ 1 don't belong on the list. Their sequels obviously do, so if you want to call them "great game emeritus" for doing well enough to *get* those sequels greenlit, fine whatever. But don't go trying to claim they were actually great.

For that matter, when doom 2 came out people felt similarly about original doom. I think basically the "I got doom to run on this thing" phenomenon saved Doom from being thought of like warcraft 1 and street fighter 1 in the "riding its own sequel's coattails" category

Nah, Doom 1 is pretty good. Haven't finished 2 yet but so far it does outclass it's predecessor in enemy and level design, favoring much more interesting, varied and proactive approaches to combat. It's levels are also more compact, which I personally prefer.

Same goes for the first Gears Of War. It pales in comparison with the other games in the series. The fact that we are getting ANOTHER remaster of that game and nothing from Gears 2 onwards is a crime. I want someone arrested and tried in The Hague!

the obvious answer is heavy rain, but mortol kombat 1 and 2 are also wild. as a fighting game fan, they're just so awful to play. all they've got is the fancy graphics, and back then, that was enough...

Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is a good open world, a mediocre rpg, and an utterly irredeemable adaptation of Andrezj Sapkowski's Witcher novels. 90% of bad takes about the series can be traced back to the CD Projekt Red writing room.

where tf are my mario galaxy haters. multiple people talking about the mario games where jumping is actually fun instead of the one where every jump feels lifeless and hollow because your momentum is instantly killed and replaced in the name of predictability

such complex physics being developed but nothing rewarding you for mastering them. heck even the speedrun is a snoozefest for the most part i'm nostalgic towards smg, like many, and i would still enjoy it today, but this game only screams missed opportunity and i like the sequel a bit more

even as a kid i hated how restrictive the galaxies were. in sm64 you get to know the levels really well as you get the stars in any order. sms is a step down from that but the spraying mechanics and room for complex movement makes it so so rewarding even if its more linear. in smg you get a spin :)

I really disagree with Deus Ex being there. The "let's throw in every conspiracy theory" story was entertaining and all, but in terms of gameplay (stealth in particular) it was painfully mediocre. Also disagree with Elden Ring, but that rant would be overlong.

Bioshock Infinite is a game that I wouldn't necessarily call bad, but it's not a good Bioshock game. It's a huge depart from the rest of the series, being more combat focused. It feels like a FPS with a Bioshock label slapped onto it without it feeling much like what a Bioshock game feels like.

Scrolling through these, thinking I might just not have it in heart to be a hater - "I think that's a fun game" over and over. Suddenly, Uncharted hits the scene. Uncharted is so bad

yeah uncharted 2 is, like, THE game that got everyone talking about ludonarrative dissonance. I feel like it's a little unfair that the series gets so much more flak for it than other shooters with wisecracking protags though

I feel like for me they are just boring. The puzzles are "open the book and match some pictures" and the platforming is like "hold up and press X sometimes so Drake climbs a wall that looks like it would probably be dangerous for a real person"

I def didn't play it as long as New Leaf but I think it's unfair to say it killed the franchise when it sold gangbusters and there was 8 years between New Leaf and it, we're only 5 years removed from Horizons.

i say it "killed the franchise" more in the sense that it completely upended the entire foundation of the original ac games being check-in life sims where you were just a guy part of a community. nh's financial success means every subsequent ac game is probably going to be the same dollhouse schlock

I think the wording of this post isn’t great. Looking at well-liked games and scrutinizing them is totally fine (and is healthy to do/discuss IMO), but spreading needless ‘hate’ seems like a bad idea in any facet. Maybe that’s the point and I’m just getting caught in the semantics, but yeah

Sheesh it's meant to be fun. Didn't you ever really dislike something and couldn't understand why everyone else likes it? And then really connect with that extremely rare person who actually agrees with you?

I don’t believe so. I tend to connect with others due to passions and interests in things. If there’s something popular I don’t like, I usually just don’t engage with it. If ppl have fun with this that’s okay, I just don’t think giving “hate takes” is conducive to meaningful discussion

Listen I could waste time talking about Bioshock Infinite but lets talk about what matters Mario Odyssey sucks shit, Oh he can morph into weird shit with a bullshit hat and do braindead mechanics? How fucking great Its a Mario game and jumping sucks, fuck off

Skyrim and Fallout 3 & 4. They came out too late to be that clunky, and they didn't learn from each other, they just kept releasing these broken games, eventually culminating in Starfield which couldn't hide behind latent fondness and is just plain crap.

Fallout 4 is definitively a bad fallout game and currently barely playable, it’s story was mid, gunplay good but horrible weapon choices, there was no true wasteland, and good god the dialogue. The best thing about it was the power armor, really made you feel like a walking tank.

I'm not going to hate on it, but I love that 1994 apparently gave us a game called "Sensible World of Soccer." I know that's the name of the company, but it sounds like a game based around managing a soccer team and making sure the taxes and physical therapy bills were handled properly each year.

You mean it was boring to play and not just boring to watch 13 year old boys play in the pizzeria? (Girls were allowed pinball, but the fighting games were their domain, and I spent hours watching these doofuses. Youth!)

I knew a few girls who were good enough at fighting games to crush boys like the ones you’re talking about. It sucked that they had to endure that kind of environment, but those who did tended to come out the other side running diamond-tipped drills through faux macho tweens.

of the top three worst games i've ever played, only one of them is on this list: planescape torment. awful goddamn game. maturity is knowing planescape torment is chris avellone acting out the edgy goth phase his parents clearly didn't let him have as a teen.

nights into dreams and day of the tentacle are games that i like because they're creative and whimsical and fun, but they're bad games grand theft auto, heavy rain, xcom: enemy unknown, and bioshock infinite are just bad and i don't like them

i like the idea of it! it does a lot of cool things, like how each lap through the stage is different because you're taking a 2d path through a 3d environment, or how your score determines which bosses you fight and what ending you ultimately get...

but i think most of those ideas aren't well-executed (i.e., the most reliable way to score c-rank or above is to ignore most of each level). it's a game that rewards memorization, which i often enjoy in games, but the level structure, camera distance, and time limits, in combination, make it a chore

Bioshock Infinite has some of the worst writing in video game history. I'm not sure how I feel about Fortnite and Overwatch being considered "the best of all time", although I can't deny how much they have affected the industry.

Speaking of bad writing, why is there so much David Cage slop in this list? Shit like this being considered "the greatest of all time" is why non-gamers have a hard time taking this medium seriously.

The level design is awful and the camera is a war crime, I really tried to play through it multiple times but always got a migraine out of it I just gave up on it, played Chain of Memories and moved on

I've always felt like one of the only Saturn fans who just didn't like NiGHTS. Incredible music, one of my favourite soundtracks ever, actually. But I never could enjoy playing the game.

Borderlands 1 is on this fucking list lmao One of the most boring, sauceless games I’ve ever played. It isn’t even terrible in the way 2 where it’s at least satisfying to make fun of.

Super Mario Odyssey has a strong movement system that is let down by having absolutely nothing worthwhile to use it on. It has the bones of a good game but the level design make it thoroughly boring to actually play.

the SEGA Genesis Sonic games are terrible as platformers. the speed and small field of view makes it hard to react to oncoming obstacles, and when the game decides to slow it down for more precise platforming it's too floaty to be good at that. it's very flashy but I'll take a mario any day

You aren't meant to go fast all the time, just use your momentum to reach new places. The games teach you this pretty quickly, it's the marketing that confused people(including myself at some point). Sonic 2 IS full of invisible spikes and poorly placed enemies though, even if you take it slow.

I love being honest and being a hater. Now I can be both. RDR2, SSBU, AC:NH, Stardew, Persona 5, Overwatch, Witcher 3, Rocket League, GTA5, Dota 2, Bioshock infinite, The Walking Dead, Hotline miami, Far cry 3, Borderlands 2, Super Meat Boy, Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, Ocarina of Time, Majora's mask

Man, I tried to like Outer Wilds, and kinda wish I could, but having a time limit constantly send me back to the beginning in such an exploration-heavy experience just sucked all the enthusiasm I had for it away

I have no particular affection for Bioshock Infinite or Braid, but I'd absolutely play them again before spending another second on Max Payne, Half-Life 1 or 2, or any Bethesda developed game.

Ah yes, Fable 2. The game where shooting a gun enough times makes you taller and has you choose between resurrecting life of your dog or 1000 strangers as your final moral conundrum.

Unrelated, but funny how the glut of games on this list is games from the 2000s and early 2010s, and apparently since 2020 there has been less than 1 per year on the list.

I think a big part of that is the methodology. In order to be on the list a game had to be "included on at least six separate best-of lists from different publications". There aren't going to be many recent games because they just haven't had the time to fit that criteria.

I think the reason for that is due to recency. A lot of games take years until they are considered cult classics or hidden gems. I distinctly remember how a lot of people hated MGS2 when it came out and it took years for the general opinion of that game to change.
