as others have noted there's a connection between these deaths and right wing "Antifa" paranoia. musk designed and advertised this thing as apocalypse proof which in his smooth brain meant "able to protect riders from dangerous hordes of poor rioters". this also makes rescuing passengers impossible

What an absolute nightmare. A high school student saw his friends crash their Cybertruck and rushed to help, but was only able to rescue one of them because the car's doors would not open from the outside. He watched his three other friends burn to death. oaklandside.org/2025/03/18/c...

The subtext of anti-protester mass violence is the at the core of the rise of luxtrucks in the last 10 years, but 90% of people will act like you're deranged for pointing out this very clear observation.

Stand Your Ground laws but for trucks has been and continues to be the laziest form of counter revolutionary action marketed toward the most dimwitted suburban dads who want to cloak themselves in the working class aesthetic. It sucks so much ass, I hate it

"The doors lock automatically if the vehicle catches fire" sounds like something Edward Norton's nameless, major car manufacturer employer in Fight Club would do. Does this count as Apollo's Dodgeball?

There are places for bullet resistant vehicles, or whatever you want to call that. Most of them are actual fucking war zones. Also I'm guessing than even an uparmored humvee would be easier to get into in an emergency that this bullshit.

I don't think they died because the CT is designed "as a fortress". People have died in other Teslas for similar reasons (door release mechanism being too hard to reach, etc). It's because Tesla doesn't care about releasing unsafe products, nothing more complicated than that

Normally the question would be will a critical mass or just a few high profile deaths get these fucking shit cars off the road. But since the Pentagon is likely to buy up all the unsold stock to bail out Musk, we're likely just be recategorizing them as collateral damage.

And that garbage can exploding on fire? An extra thrill? What other car catches fire like that, in what otherwise could be a regular accident? I can't believe people pay $100,000 for that glorified Pinto.

He could have put in an easy to open emergency latch, and as far as I hear there IS one, but it's difficult to find when it should be obvious and bright yellow or something, but Musk was more concerned with what he thinks looks cool instead of what actually works.

He has the magic code to unlock any vehicle. He also records everything from the cabin. The fenders are blowing off because the glue failed. 4 college kids died in that crash. Sad and horrible. I’m not sure why the FBI director drives around in one that’s bright red with personalized plates.

vehicular equivalent of the macho man fudd chud home defense fantasy when more of them end up shooting themselves and/or their families

I remember this being something people warned would happen. People baffled that the most obvious of safety features - being able to open a door to let people out in a crash - is not something you just take away, and it would lead to deaths. And Elon will learn nothing from this.

my old-ass truck has manual crank windows and although of course that mechanism can still be damaged depending on the situation, the fact that it’s not dependent on electricity is a plus that i’m mad is basically not an option in any new car anymore. bring back analog vehicles

Just want to point out that fire/ems has zero training on these things. While I’ve never dealt with one in an emergency, they seem like a nightmare. I would never own one for many reasons, but they are literally a death trap.

I had a refresher course with a local Community Emergency Response Team a couple of years ago. The firefighters running it explained that the only way to reliably get people out of a Cybertruck was going to be using hydraulic cutters; and that's why they did not want them to be added to the roads.

The tanker survival onion applies seamlessly to this sort of nonsensemobile: 0. Don't get seen 1. If seen, don't get identified 2. If identified, don't get acquired 3. If acquired, don't get fired on 4. If fired on, don't get hit 5. If hit, don't get breached

You'd think the smartest guy in the world or one of his many highly-paid advisers would have read one poast once about century-old vehicular combat theory but here the fuck we are

This is what Bernard Arnault, the richest man in France, drove around Paris when he was worried about assassins. It's a GTi with a custom luxury interior and uprated brakes and suspension to cope with the half ton of armour.

I work in medieval studies, and all you have to do to note this is check out how medieval castles are situated. They are generally in positions of strategic importance, but castles in march areas like the Welsh/English border are positioned to project power as well as (or instead of) protecting.

Good to remember that it is impossible to create a vehicle that cannot be compromised or accessed. Its just a matter of time or technique. Something that a rescuer is less likely to have in the moment than someone wishing to do you harm. Its lose/lose

Also, considering the shoddy construction, I doubt it works as a fortress against a dedicated mob with a little time and, like, one crowbar. Maybe saves you a handful of seconds against the angry mob that could mean life or death in a far more common accident?

Once I helped pull a couple out of their F150 that flipped on its side during a thunder storm near Pyramid Lake. We had to stand on top of the vehicle in active traffic and absolutely any delay opening those doors could've gotten us or them killed. I think about this every time i buy a new vehicle

I had an accident with my Nissan going 70 mph hitting another vehicle, spinning out almost into an embankment. The car was a total loss but I didn’t have any injuries, not even whiplash. The cop said the car took the damage for me and that’s what they SHOULD do.

This is part of why all those tiktoks (that are mostly just to get them to buy "safety" equipment they don't need) where they use the passenger seatbelt to secure the door and other stuff really scare me. You don't want anything making it harder to get you out of a crashed car than it is.

I remember probably 15-20 years ago now the actor Mark Harmon grabbed a sledgehammer from his garage to rescue a couple of kids from a very crumpled car that went into a pole outside his house. I want a car that a 50 year old can get me out of with a tool from his house.

cars should have IFAK equivalents by regulation, imo. just assume I'm going to have to save you some day in the middle of an active highway in deep fog and have some area of the undercarriage marked FLARE STORAGE so it doesn't rely on me having restocked mine

Yes exactly! I think about this all the time! There are certain car components that should be electromechanical, and in some cases purely mechanical. If the car completely loses power (a thing that actually happened to me in my first car), I need a steering wheel and brakes that still work.

Robert out here doing the literal hero shit sometimes. Cool People who Did Cool Things amirite

Same with an elderly lady who wrecked her minivan taking a turn on a country road and missed straight into a power pole. You want regular ass people to be able to bust through your vehicle's glass. Cuts and scrapes are far preferable to burning to death waiting on EMS.

Had to do something similar in the middle of the night when I saw a car that had run off into a culvert because the driver fell asleep after a work shift. The car was smoking and catching fire. If I hadn't been able to kick in a window, there's no way I could have helped her out of the car.

Sadly enough. Even normal modern cars are replacing standard tempered glass with laminate. Which as a first responder, the simple window breakers cannot shatter both panes. Argument is they are anti-theft. Cool and all. Except when Firefighters are trying to pull your limp body out.

Think about even a medieval fortress or really from any time period. You want to survive a siege you actually want lots of clandestine ways in and out for supplies and communication. You don't want a complete impenetrable box that you'll just starve in.

The regulations on doors opening after a crash are so shockingly lax to begin with, that's probably one of the few things he didn't have to use a bribe for. Before Tesla, it was pretty much just a gentleman's agreement among manufactures to make doors that don't trap you.

Remembering a book I read about 17th and 18th century Europe . Discussing the Dutch and their chief merchants, despite everyone else on the continent of the same wealth and social height, they still only ever dressed normal, rode plain carriages, and did not have massive retinues around them

It’s remarkable how folks say “cars were made better back in the day” without understanding that modern cars crumpling is THE POINT. Cars crumpling/falling apart=dissipation of energy, so you aren’t turned to jelly by a violent impact

Been having "fun" conversations with the younger people I work with about things like this. "Yes, your front end was SUPPOSED to collapse like that! Otherwise it would be happening to YOU."

"you are far likelier to need rescue from your own car than a mob." Have you considered the demographic of dudes who want to be entirely unlikable at all times getting trapped in a burning vehicle?

I saw a video once, where they did crash tests of a solid old ‘56 Chevy, or something from that era, and a modern 4-door sedan. After the crash, the ‘56 Chevy looked a lot better than the modern car, but the dummy in the driver’s seat looked a *lot* worse.

Not to defend Tesla, but the doors can be opened w/o power from the inside. Just like a normal car with a locked door won’t open from the outside. Agree on the windows though. Those need to be breakable.

His design choices come from a mind that grew up in Apartheid South Africa surrounded by rich white people who’d swap horror stories about what would happen if they were surrounded by black people who’d decided they’d had enough. When he says “zombie-proof,” he’s not thinking zombies.

god those poor kids and their friend watching his friends die. this is so upsetting. i'll never understand the world elon musk and co live in where apparently the people most likely to be trying to get into your car are dangers to you and not paramedics or emts

Which is more apt of modern conservative masculinity? The paranoid rage that leads you to envisage a Humvee as a commuter vehicle--consequently failing at both purposes--or the insecurity at driving a soccer mom SUV that leads you to design a vehicle so structurally unsound it kills your children

NB: all Teslas have electronic doorlocks - the door handle (if they exist - the Cybertruck doesn’t have any) is just a switch that asks the car’s computer to plz open the door. To get out of a Tesla that’s lost power, you have to claw away a piece of door trim to get at an emergency release cable.

…and something a lot of car manufacturers are starting to do, because it’s more future. 🙄 Lucid, for one, have the right idea -yes, the doorlocks are electronic, but for emergency release, you pull on the regular door handle, but harder.

I don't understand how this is still sold. Best I can find yard darts or jarts were responsible for 3 deaths before they were banned from sale. Cybertrucks killed as many in that single incident and there are more making the vehicle more dangerous than a Pinto by fiery death rate.

i think it also needs to be pointed out that these huge honkin things absolutely will not hold up in any combat situation; they lose regularly to nature, wear-and-tear, and regular operation. they're the definition of a sitting duck if the duck had 10,000 fatal flaws. the MRAP can at least drive!

Not even sure how well it would protect someone from rioters, given how many of those supposedly bulletproof metal panels can literally be pulled off with bare hands (assuming they don't fall off on their own due to cold or stormy weather) because everything is glued on.

Libertarians always focus on how they shouldn’t have to support society. They don’t ever think that they could ever personally need help from strangers. Even their approach to car design reveals that line of thinking.

The fact that it burst into a raging inferno after a fairly standard frontal collision is also kind of worrisome. Thing basically exploded like a GTA vehicle that's been shot too many times.
