this is a subject that's near and dear to my heart 1. no you didn't, you retconning fucks 2. your decades of anti-governance "free market" "government never functions" propaganda paved the way for the complete authoritarian decimation of labor, consumer, environmental protections

I know these people intimately. I've been engaged in bickering with them for the better part of an adult life. Primarily because they repeatedly insisted, using fake pseudo-academic cack, that no oversight of telecom monopolies would result in vast, utopian outcomes

most of these "libertarian free market think tankers" were paid covertly under the table by America's shittiest companies to argue for ZERO functional oversight of corporate power, then when the corpses, rampant fraud, and mass suffering appear, they're just completely intellectually fucking absent

A lot of these free market libertarians in the last year or DID shift some of their attention to combatting Trump's attacks on free speech. But they want to pretend they didn't play a starring role in paving the way for the total destruction of the federal regulatory state by autocratic zealots

again I know a lot of them, and unless I missed it, I've yet to see a single one of these free market think tank knobs face ANY meaningful reputational impact whatsoever in the Loper Bright, Supreme Court-driven, corruption free for all their policy proposals directly enabled

It's not about the freedom of the ordinary person to live out from under someone else's thumb but the freedom of the powerful man to put his thumb wherever he pleases (without having to hear about it from some nagging shrew).

they selling it as the former but it almost uniformly winds up the latter. otherwise these guys would meaningfully challenge corporate power

Libertarians are fundamentally incapable of thinking in terms of systems and view everything through the scope of vacuum-isolated individualism. In their minds, there is no such thing as aggregate effect, and everything is simply a matter of individualized choice in an even playing field.

They don’t understand things like: We don’t grow food to feed people but for profit, and as such, prices are set not to maximize affordability but ROI. This requires prices to be set to the highest amount the most people will be willing to pay, which intrinsically prices out the poorest X%.

These prices adjust as more people are willing to pay more, so you simply cannot break out of the permanent strata of poverty guaranteed by capitalism. To libertarians though, capitalism is an ideal system that all just fixes itself somehow with zero regulation or compensation to eliminate poverty.

Consolidation of telecom power results in utopia? Let’s see how unfair rate increases were handled by still-beloved left wing populist Huey P. Long while he was an attorney. Oh, he prosecuted them and got customers restitution? Huh.

At a young age watching Real Time and then clips of Joe Rogen, I learned Libertarian just meant I'm a republican that want's to smoke pot.

He's still very hard core, small 'l' libertarian, but also completely ignores a fundamental flaw of the small government piece of small 'l' libertarianism which I see as the fact that the Gov't has to be larger than the largest corporation in order to enforce rights - "quis custodiet ipsos custodes"

Agree! This was the worst POS opinion that @nytimes.com has allowed in a long time. And they didn’t allow any comments. Libertarians’ definition of liberty is their freedom to do whatever the fuck they want to others and suffer no consequences. Forget justice and forget welfare.

As someone who is seeing public education dismantled and starved to death via no funding in our state, the Ls who believe utopia shouldn’t include an avenue for all to be educated can f off.

You people need to storm the Democrats primaries to make sure you don't end up with another corporate owned asshole. You can do better than Gavin Newsome. You deserve better. This may be your only chance to get something better.

My favourite bit of Libertarian insanity is the call in to the Majority Report where the Libertarian caller thinks that the solution to the inevitable Neo-feudalism of his An-Cap ideals would be a society of pro-bono Jason Bourne-style assassins. Without a hint of irony.

Libertarians are Republicans who have a tiny, tiny bit of a soul left, so they know they are doing wrong, but still value their own desires above others, and so they excuse those actions.

yes, but more accurately probably retconning or lazy image rehab (because any honest libertarian free market type should know they paved the way for a ton of this shit)

10 years ago all Libertarians could do was bring out guys who wanted to make weed legal but couldn't handle questions or people who went "You're right we SHOULD finally find out the truth behind 9/11"

I'm a lifetime LP/GP voter. Almost all the "libertarians" aren't. Those that are, sadly, mostly focus on economics, not liberty. The flaws in their logic are 1: corporations ARE NOT people, 2: anarchy sucks; there is a place for public goods. They're 🔥 on central banks and fiat money though.

The defining feature of U.S. libertarianism is its refusal to recognize its own boot print on the necks of others. So focused on its own license, it cannot imagine a world where its actions harm others.

libertarians are self-deluded liars. The day 'my protected airspace' or 'my protected water source' is clean and safe from the oil company or landfill immediately next door is the day i'll become one. Or 'my civil rights' are actually protected as in the Constitution - lots of other examples...

As a former libertarian, THE core idea is less governance. This makes socialism the antithesis of libertarianism. So in this case who did libertarians "tell so"? Nobody that's in power has any affiliation w socialism and we have a system of unfettered late-stage capitalism. WHO was wrong here?

The NYT always finds new ways to make me loathe them. Libertarianism is a fucking joke. It's MAGA for those who think they're too edgy and smart to be republicans. I guess I'm biased because every libertarian I have met has been a total moron.

As someone who was once a conservative libertarian, and now is probably about a leftist libertarian, you’re absolutely right!!! they absolutely did no such thing! Retcon is right! All the libertarian party people in my area were the craziest more maga than maga authoritarians. Traitors to freedom.

I've never once in my life seen a liberal go "Hmm, maybe we should rethink our approach." Never. Not once in my life. Just feel like that might have something to do with the current situation is all.

I have suffered under libertarian college staff for my studies and their whole academic position could have been summarized in: - we want less government oversight, because freedom is inherently good - here is a bunch of highly cherrypicked examples, when things kind of worked without government

Exactly right. I didn't even bother clicking on the NYT link when I looked at the paper this morning: just more obvious drivel from the NYT fucking up yet again. Katherine Mangu-Ward is clearly a fucking idiot and/or liar.

*Libertarians never return the shopping cart.* Libertarians are all for civil rights, but don't like civil rights laws -- in the same way they are OK with labor unions, but don't like laws to protect them. In short, they have no problem with the Establishment stepping on civil rights and labor.

The dumbest person is whoever is the most libertarian. They love to say communism only works in theory but there’s entire communist countries. You can’t even run a small municipal govt on libertarian ideology without it turning into a dumpster

Same reaction. I’ve never met a serious (read over 19yo) libertarian whose beliefs weren’t just a thin veil for selfishness, racism, retaining one’s inheritance etc etc.

Libertarians: "We all voted for Trump because we were concerned about an authoritarian government trampling people's rights. And we sure were right about that second part!"

Libertarians really suck the dick of the bourgeoise. Thinking they are somehow the same as capitalist elite for attempting to be part of the petty bourgeoise. But often they are nothing more then pedophile apologists. Reeducation camps at best, gulags most likely.

Libertarians have long embraced the ‘I’ve got mine - fuck you’ philosophy of unchecked power & capitalism that has resulted in everyone & everything being a commodity

The loudest libertarian I know lives in an agricultural region developed and financed by the govt (roads, canals, reservoirs, etc) and has personally declared bankruptcy twice. Damn nanny state.

Libertarians were the FIRST to jump on the fascist dick. I saw their malignancy from scientific/skeptic circles to far-right anti-muslim, anti-queer, anti-women authoritarianism within the span of less than a decade. And they hated the left far more than they did Trump. So they went Trump.

a lot of them were specifically annoyed because a woman FTC chair named Lina Khan hinted at just the smallest amount of authentic antitrust reform

I should've figured this would happen, that we'd start getting a plethora of people acting as though they were always against the bad things, actually. It's going to happen a lot over the coming years, and I'm already so fucking angry.

Libertarians are just assholes who don't want to pay taxes and don't seem to understand why we have regulations to protect everybody.

Oh yes, I used to argue with them and I realized they’re really not that smart either - they’re really just right wing Republicans who think conservative Christians impinge on their freedom to party, but their racism keeps them from admitting it.

Libertarian is the opposite of athoritarianism so however it paved the way to its opposite is hilariously inaccurate 🐍 Don't tread on me means don't tread on anyone ✊🏾

most of the libertarians I've known couldn't give the slightest fuck if the public is trampled to death by unchecked corporate power. the sect I'm talking about was hijacked and mutated by corporations and their think tanks 50 years ago

Seriously, fuck the NYT for publishing this offensive bullshit. The only personal freedoms most libertarians ever cared about are the freedom to trash the commons and the freedom to exploit and swindle other people.

Libertarians would have more credibility if they had actually spent the better part of the last thirty years not abetting the rise of right-wing the extremism. And I say this as someone very sympathetic to libertarian ideas

Best Libertarian jokes? - Ls are just Repubs who want to smoke pot - The L strategy in WW2 would have been to let market forces defeat Hitler - Ls are like house cats: convinced of their fierce independence while utterly dependent on a system they don't understand Who has others?

In my experience either teenagers, self interested business owners or (usually) white (usually) men who are pretty good at someone that happens to be lucrative and they think that means that they know everything.

Some chode on Twitter asked for people to define what being a Libertarian means in one sentence and the best answer, by light years, was "My girlfriend shouldn't be forced by the government to sit in a child seat when I driver her in my car"

A libertarian is just someone who never grew out of the 14-year-old mindset of "When I grow up, there's gonna be no stupid rules, MOM!" and is overprivileged enough to think that can work.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs. (I'm a libertarian and have to laugh at that because it's true.)

Libertarians: "Did we basically all vote for conservatives in lockstep? Did we contribute to the intellectual decay of the Republican party for decades? Did our ideological brethren find dozens of tech companies with the goal of mass surveillance? Y'know, maybe!"

I had a libertarian phase. It was noticing that they always fell on the side of financial “freedom” and never - you know - freedom freedom, that started clueing me into the suspicion that they didn’t really believe in any of this shit.

I once had a libertarian tell me we didn't need health inspections in restaurants, because "people can tell if a place looks sketchy". And this moron was a nutrition professor!

As a former Libertarian everyone of my old Libertarian social group is 100% onboard for whats happening, they didn’t warn about it, they actively wanted it.

I lost touch with my old LP social group when I stopped paying attention to FB. I'm not inclined to go back and find out where they are. Much like I never discussed TFG with my dad before he passed. He was a 2A hardliner, and this way I can continue believing he would have been against this.

When someone tells me that they're a libertarian, I always tell them "OK, well when they get rid of all the rules, the first thing I'm going to do is move into your house and steal all your stuff."

When I hear people talk about government deregulation and privatization, I ask them one question. Please name one thing that became higher quality, and less expensive, once it was privatized. Then I let the silence hang.

On the other hand, a herd of bison were taken to form a herd around 1930 in a Cowboy movie, and then were left to roam the island. The Catalina Island Conservancy stepped in, hired experts to determine what the island could sustain. Came up with a number. They still roam there.

The infrastructure for cell phone use was built on government built lines. Sure, they adapt the code to be slightly more efficient, but it all ends up running over various networks maintained by private companies, with no new infrastructure.

People moaning about deregulation and privatisation be like: “Government bad, private sector good!” Me: “Ever heard of public–private partnerships? It actually works and no, it’s not socialism.” See: Scandinavia, the Middle East… basically, countries that get stuff done.

there's been a LOT of fairly successful public-private partnerships in U.S. broadband. And municipal, community owned networks. It doesn't get a lot of play in the corporate press for obvious reasons, but it often works.

You are absolutely right. The best governments are a mixed one. When implemented correctly, state competition fights inflation and keeps consumer pricing down because the private sector competes.

Amen. If libertarians actually stood for what they say they stood for... they would be valid participants in the national discussion. But they decided to enable trump and become Nazis out of convenience.

Libertarians voted for Trump. They knew his rhetoric, they read Project 2025, they still voted for him. So they can fuck off with their "I told you so" BS.

Almost all of the Libertarians I know are basically weed smoking gun nuts, who always have way more problems with the liberals than they do with MAGA. They love to say they are "independent free thinkers," & I'm always thinking "sure you are buddy." I bet most of these guys voted for Trump 3 times.

Because they refuse to go all in on anti-authoritarianism by employing decentralized approaches. They instead keep utilizing some kind of centralized capitalist-based authoritarian network instead. Bioshock is still a straight up politically relevant interactive experience for pointing that out.

. I think given enough time they would just build something just like a democratic government and call it something eles. We don't need dollars we have work coins totally different. Or build a company town A CEO ruins it and they work for him

So glad to see someone talking about this. I used to support Ron Pauline consider my libertarian however I strongly oppose them now. I like the idea they had a lot of integrity. They have none.

To say this when PoC were saying from the start that he's racist and will do racism racistly and were largely met with, "Racism? What is this, the 1950s? Nobody is racist anymore," takes some fucking audacity.

"Dudes who spent three decades caucusing with the fascist party point to fascist party as proof of their ideals." I swear libertarians have been living real life examples of algorithm bias for years. "Did you see the new craze everyone's talking about" says one of twelve targeted audience members.

The whole libertarian thing feels like a label some people use to avoid the baggage of other identities, while still supporting positions that disadvantage women, minorities, and LGBTQ folks.

Honestly, when I saw this image, I thought the piece was directed AT libertarians, many of whom lined up and enthusiastically supported Trump in 2024. I'm glad they're coming around, but they're really in no position to be smug. (But I also understand that smug is their default position.)

My experience is that 99% of libertarians either don't understand the philosophy at all or are greedy capitalists using it as cover for less regulation on only the things they care about. My fav were the christian libertarians of the 90's who were completely clueless.
