“For many years, a robust norm held in American politics: You could be in favor of legal immigration while still opposing illegal immigration,” Alexander Kustov writes. That norm is now in danger of collapsing, putting every legal immigration channel at risk:

bit.lyHow the Left Accidentally Bolstered the Nativist RightBy dismissing the distinction between legal and illegal immigration as bogus, advocates signaled that they would not defend it.

Yeah it really sucks. Maybe someday other political movements will exercise power and elect politicians. But until that day comes the rest of us are helplessly carried along by merely reacting to events.

It’s wild how little responsibility Trump and his voters have according the the media, the Democratic Party, and all their loyal fans. Why blame the people planning and executing all the horrible things in this world when you can attack leftists, the folks who were correct about everything?

You spend the intro identifiying the loudest public incidents of attacks and even identify the political bias of the groups involved. It becomes immediately evident this is bad faith to create the illusion of honesty so you can backflip over pointing out the obvious bias commonality.

Oh good, it's the Atlantic with another ridiculous, offensive and infantile take on a real issue that seriously affects people's lives.

"If the Jews, gays, and Roma people hadn't been so in your face in Berlin during the Weimar Republic, maybe Hitler wouldn't have had to do the Holocaust." --The Atlantic probably And in case anyone thinks this is "too much," they are literally building concentration camps for immigrants right now

Immigration is good. All immigration. If you don’t think so, you’re literally ignorant, please ready any study about it. That’s reality and unfortunately it doesn’t care about your feelings.

That line was always horse shit. Republicans said it while constantly ratcheting down the number of legal immigrants. It was a cover for their xenophobia. Republicans have consistently just wanted LESS, no matter how they did it.

This is because the arbitrary nature of “the law” has never been clearer. Legal or illegal means nothing if it is not moral. The right has done the work of showing us this via ICE. The law is not inherently moral; how could it be, with our lawmakers being who they are with their incentives?

These people waved thousands of "Mass Deportations Now" signs because of The Left, not because they're just fucking xenophobic assholes who should be ejected from polite society? This is The Left's fault. Do you hear yourself. Who torpedoed immigration reform during the GWB administration?

"On March 12, the Heritage Foundation posted six words on X: “We have a legal immigration problem.” That sentence would once have been unthinkable from a major conservative institution." My God dude that is an entire oil tanker's worth of whitewash you are working with.

See, here's the thing: the Right, as a political entity, requires the existence of bonkers aggrieved persecution-pilled Christians, deeply xenophobic jagoffs, and millionaires who want tax cuts more than they want anything else in the world. And it's been this way since ~ 1980.

William F. Buckley praised "Camp of the Saints". This is not a new movement on the Right, and it doesn't have anything to do with anything the Left did. Regan's most unpopular move was immigration amnesty! The Right cannot *exist* as a functional party any more without rancid xenophobia.

"I pissed on my neighbor's head. But it was actually my neighbor's fault, for asking me not to piss on his head," Alexander Kustov writes. "Pissing on my neighbor's head is a result of the language my neighbor used to kindly ask me not to piss on his head. When will he learn?" Read more:

The norm to indulge the rhetorical contortions of polite nativists should have died in 2011 with the DREAM Act. If the "enter the country the right way" people want an assumption of good faith, they can act in good faith. Until then, do not piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

If the left is pushing back on the idea that "illegal immigration" should be OK, it's because the right has shunted so much of what should be legal immigration into the illegal category. Restrictions on immigration bounded by anything other than threat and capacity IS immoral.

I agree with what you are saying to a limited degree, but there is a level to which the law gives Presidents no agency in the matter. This is mostly a colossal dereliction of duty by the legislative. Though, Obama and Biden both failed to look for more compassionate avenues.

The main problem in this country is that the left has no power. I don’t see how Alexander Kutsov can plausibly blame the left for anything other than fucking around and infighting in a way that ensures that continues to have no power.

This is absolute nonsense, stop laundering right wing talking points. The norms collapsing have everything to do with conservatives shifting further and further to the right. You gonna call that out?

Kustov didn't write this, a hallucinating lying theft bot did. He just decided to take credit for a nonsense expressed poorly. Maybe if he'd thought it through instead of just vomiting prompts to the hallucinating lying theft bot, he'd have realized how dumb this was. Or probably not.

Professor looks around at Trump and conservatives rounding up anyone who looks even vaguely Hispanic and regardless of whether they are citizens, documented, or undocumented, and thinks to himself "Why would the left do this?!?"

This is by the same guy who also thinks AI is better at sociology than people, btw. If I may quote from Why We Fear AI: "What is called “intelligence” in a language model, is really that - ideology as a thing that can pretend to be a person." Well, that's clearly obvious here.

For most of the time this has been a country -- and at the time when many nativists' ancestors arrived here -- you just had to have no visible signs of serious disease. The rules and systems that have made legal immigration basically impossible for many (with decades of backlog) are a racist choice.

Claiming to be for legal immigration was always a pretense, and claiming to oppose only illegal immigration was always a lie. They're finally telling the truth now, and it's not pretty.

You: whether this guy is human or not depends on his paperwork. It's your fault he died in a detention center. Anyway you know legal immigration law has always been racist? Good job.

You want to crack down on illegal immigration. Any enforcement increase is going to catch people who are in the process for asylum or family-based visa or something else that would make them legal. So you either cut off those legal avenues or look the other way on illegal immigration in that case.

The left did no such thing. Ronald Reagan wanted to reform immigration in the early '80s, but Republicans in Congress blocked such efforts because they saw how useful the issue would be as a wedge. All these years later, they are reaping the fruits of their efforts. Obscene to now blame the left.

The right has no agency. It is responsible for none of its evil actions. All reactions are justified as a response to the Left. The right need’nt not provide evidence for the effectiveness of its policies. All educated refutation is Elitism.

Because the Atlantic always blames every fucking thing it can on the left. Now the left is responsible for purely ignorant right-wing bigotry. It’s not the fault of the poor uneducated dopes who bought the lies about pet-eating Haitians. It’s liberals who insist on respect for humanity. Got it.

Is the right ever responsible for their own actions? They are doing all this because the left demanded that immigrants be treated with compassion? What the hell is wrong with the Atlantic? are all your employees borderline sociopaths?
