Hey #GameDev, what are everybody's thoughts on ads in the game dev feed? I'm looking for ways to support my work, so lemme explain about what this would look like. 🧵

A dedicated marketing channel for gamedev related stuff in the gamedev feed would be helpful to discover new stuff. Any chance a portion of those funds get reserved for something like producing a jam or charity? Keeping game dev money in the game dev community?

I'd be all for committing to the jam/charity thing! I need to make a baseline income, but I'm not looking to cash in on the feed so this would be great for the excess. What exactly do you mean by "a dedicated marketing channel," tho? Are you just referring to the ads channel?

Im just suggesting the ad space would mostly be bought by indie devs because who is is more interested in indie games than other devs? Its a good place to get traction on a marketing campaign. And if thats true then why not return some of that back to the community through some sponsored event.

Like a jam or some charity. Which might actually open up more possible revenue streams for yourself through 3rd party sponsors. It both strengthens the community and opens up potential for more profit on your end, especially if it grows the gamedev feed year over year. Idk maybe I misunderstand.

I like this feed so far just joined, so thank you. Adds if moderate won't upset me. A patron or something similar could pay towards would suit me better mind you. I would rather purchase a product than be one. I will at least buy you a coffee in the mean time.

I think its a really good idea on paper. In practice it'll take a team with lots of self control to not give into the money businesses might give you to push unrelated products. I believe its definitely possible and will inevitably bee good for the community even after Bsky Creates a ads system👏.

I think you're right! It's just gonna be me for now, but I've had a committee to help me manage and moderate the feeds before so it's entirely plausible that I'd start another one if it's necessary. 💙

As long as the ads aren't ads tied to a fake mobile game or full of false ads. Google's ad space is already terrible enough and they never hold up their own policy on that crap, I don't want that else where. Also, if it's AI content, it's gotta be marked as AI content.

The quoted skeet may help a bit, but the goal would be to make sure all ads are relevant to game devs. Honestly, I don't think game releases fit that criteria. It's gotta be tools and services that 1) aren't scammy, and 2) are useful for game devs.

Trezy@trezy.codes

Yeah, I may write up a document detailing what I’d accept for ads. For example, I don’t think I’ll accept ads for game releases since they’re not as relevant to game devs as they would be to gamers.

How labour intensive is maintaining the feed and can you do it on donations? Happy to support that work, because I use this feed often but I’m keen to avoid the small end of the monetising other people’s content wedge

These days I spend about an hour every day on moderation. That said, I’m moderating all of my feeds (5 active + 2 in development) and I’m running @ozone.birb.house. The labeler takes up the majority of my time, tho. Sorting through information for verified labels is… a lot. 😅

It would be cool if the ads were not only curated, but that there was a way to submit our own as a way to contribute to funding for the feed with a little extra value. Submissions also being curated for relevancy, safety, etc.

Yup! TBF, the metrics is super low atm because the average includes days from before the feed was on Graze. The feed has closer to 16k active users per day. 😅

Yeah, we actually solved the disclosure issue! 😉

Trezy@trezy.codes

1) I've settled that ads will have to have the #ad hashtag for me to accept them. 2) I don't even think game releases are relevant enough to count — see the quoted skeet. 3) The initial target is gonna be less than 1% of the skeets you see will be ads, so ~1 in 100 skeets.

Yeah, ~5% is probably the highest I'd ever go with ad saturation. We've solved the disclosure issue, too! 😁

I really appreciate your clear and thoughtful response. It's very helpful in determining the nuanced ways in which I need to adjust so I can continue to support the community while still keeping food on the table. 💙

Very helpful, thanks. I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to thoughtfully explain your position to me. 🤣

Oh, wow! Have you considered building your business on Squarespace, tho? I hear it's great for small businesses.

Maybe, but I’ve had a long conversation with Ben about it it’s the quoted thread. I’m all ears if you have other ideas or think I’m wrong, tho!

Trezy@trezy.codes

There's a canyon between pinning this thread discussing changes that would impact users of the feed and pinning a link to my Ko-fi that's literally just an ad.

see, theres definitely *some* interest! im still holding out hope that you pin a thread similar to this one, talking about funding with donations and asking how the community feels about that instead of ads. i think there'd be a lot of interest, you just gotta ask the users for thoughts on it!

Adds can be a great way to sport revenue for the #GameDev community. I support the idea of only relivent adds being made available within the community as well. It would definitely push more indie developers and community postings for events and create reliable revenue for the community. I support 💙

the description of this feed implies that its automated? Is that wrong? If so, how much work goes into it and what does it entail? I'm new to bluesky so I'm still not clear on how these things work, like whats the difference between the "gamedev" feed, compared to the gamedev hashtag?

It’s automated in that I don’t curate every skeet that shows up, but it’s a custom algorithm that I wrote and have been tuning for the past couple of years. I also moderate the feed, so I’m watching out for toxic skeets and bad actors and removing them from the feed.

Yeah, I _totally_ get that. Honestly, I'm hopeful that this could improve the feed rather than make it worse. Surfacing things that would otherwise get buried like game jams and new engines. We'll see, tho. It could also end up a hot mess that I shut off as fast as I kicked it on. 😅

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I'm trying to be very considerate about the whole thing. That's why I posed the question to the community rather than diving straight in. 😉

I totally get that, and I'm 100% with you. I'm hopeful I can manage it so that the ads are useful and relevant, but of course, they're still ads and they always will be.

I’d be okay with occasional ads as long as they are marked in some way. Another idea is, Depending on the amount of costs/work involved, I wonder if you could find 1 company to sponsor the feed(s) for some period of time which would be mentioned in description and maybe the occasional post.

Yeah, I thought about that, too. It's deffo more work for me, tho, and I imagine it'd be tough to find a company that wants to spend the money without exerting significant influence over the feed itself. If you have any leads, tho, hook me up. 😍

Allowing any ads is an inevitable gateway to allowing more ads. I'm a big proponent of letting game studios post their work and let the merits of their post be its own advertising (game screenshots, WIP blogs, cool trailers) Anything outside that starts the ball rolling toward enshittification.

I get that. My goal is to prevent that, but I'm only human. I'm planning to write up a clear prospectus on what I will and won't allow as ads on this feed, then I'll get community feedback before I pull the trigger. I'm hopeful that will help avoid some of these issues.

I'm fine with ads, maybe make it mandatory to say "paid ad" in text, also in the alt text and visibly marked as ad on screenshot/video. That's how influencers and outlets in some EU countries have to mark ads online by law. Transparent, no room for questions or weird ads disguised as content.

I love your work for this community and you seem thoughtful, intentional and consultative about how you are doing this, so if it helps you put food on the table I think you should go ahead. You seem to have a good sense of the boundaries that will save it from becoming horrible.

1. I do'nt mind but 2. I use ghostery because 3. SOMETIMES ads cause more hell with my system - because i'm on a potato mac 4. I will never complain about a dev or artist askin to get support for their efforts :D

Is there an example feed with ads? I think game dev related ads are fine, maybe even welcome. I learned about Game Devs of Color and Gamescom LatAm through ads on LinkedIn. But they were clearly labeled as ads.

Yeah, I think we've solved the disclosure issue! I'm checking with other feed owners to see if there are any currently running feeds. I'll let you know if I find one! 🥰

see like, who even is that person. I know you're going to vet the ads, but the eagerness to pay for people's attention is just so off-putting for me personally, I don't want that person to be able to force their way onto my feed nothing against them but man. the vibes are not great

This is such a valuable feed for me (and I think many others) I don't mind ads, everyone needs to pay the bills. With the work you've put into this I have confidence you'll finetune the adds to make some money and keep the quality of the feed without too much bloat.

I get the sentiment, but the discussion is never that simple.

Trezy@trezy.codes

Did we really discover a way to exist without ads, or did it just take a while for us to realize the financial burden was being placed on creators? I feel like that’s an important part of the conversation that’s often missing from the generic “ads are bad” argument.

The picture only touches the tip of the iceberg - that's only the "companies shoving ther shit to the consumer" part. Especially on social media, its more often than not billionaires buing themselves power the should not have in a democracy. Anyways. I purge anything with ads from my life.

I assure you this isn't a billionaire buying more influence. I'm an indie dev trying to support the things I've built, and trying to do it in a way that DOESN'T alienate the people using them. But, ya know... you do you, boo. Purge away. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That's the goal! 😁

Trezy@trezy.codes

Honestly no, unless you fix the "can't tell it's an ad" part. If every ad requires the text "Ad 🗞️" or something then sure. Twitter testing ads that did not identify as ads was a huge red flag.

I think we have! I covered it in the quoted skeet. 🥰

I'm heavily biased, because I'd probably be using the offer to get ads on the feed in the future. And while I appreciate the general hate for more ads in this thread, I'd like, from my biased perspective, to present a more nuanced approach.

First of: relevance to the gamedev feed is key! Ads for oversized water bottles of questionable plastic is not relevant. But if you were to get small businesses who'd want to advertise assets, plugins or other things that's relevant to gamedevs I think everybody wins.

And sometimes an ad can just be a brand giving away free stuff to get eyes on them, and maybe you could have a rule that it needs to be actually free (not pay-with-your-email-and-other-data "free" bs), which would be another way of keeping the feed classy and high value.

Lol, you're not wrong. Personally, I look at the feed for interesting technical tidbits, but devlogs are 100% designed to build a wider audience and get more interest in your game. ❤️

I don't have issues with ads as long as they are being moderated and screened for potential harmful content. My issue with ads on platforms is that there is no moderation for the most part. So you get ads that are essentially scams, phishing sites, viruses, malware and all kinds of shady things.

The manual ad reviewing is cool and I trust you to do it but I also feel like that could get overwhelming. So I hope that if you go down this route and it starts to feel like too much pressure you'll let us know and don't push yourself too far

I really appreciate the concern. I'm already doing a lot of this for @ozone.birb.house, so it's not really a new burden. I've tapped the community for help when I've been overwhelmed before, so I'll deffo do it again if necessary. 🥰

A lot of people's gut reactions to 'advertising' is gonna be to throw up in their mouths. I don't think this idea has been well communicated. There are good kinds of advertising they're just not what people think of when the word is said and that doesn't seem to be accounted for.

Spiritbunny@klaustrix.com

Having skimmed the proposal my feeling is that this has been terribly communicated. Advertising is a dirty word and conjures images of intrusive ads no one wants to see. It isn't clarified until post 5 that the ads will be by/for indie dev content and services (should have been post 2 minimum)

These are all good points. I don't claim to be the world's best communicator, so I appreciate the feedback. I'll try to write a new version of the notice today that's clearer. Mind if I reach out for direct feedback?

Not at all! I apologise if it came off as blunt and I don't blame your difficulties, anything with ads is a tricky subject to tackle. Of course I'd be happy to take a look at what you're considering, though I'm no expert in comms - just an opinionated layman 😅

Not sure here. I fear it won't be "neutral" than anymore and maybe annoying. But I understand that all the work takes a lot of time and you need somehow to balance it. But a general game dev feed shouldnt have ads imo.

I appreciate that perspective. My goal is for the ads I run to be relevant and useful to the community. I have a pretty high bar for quality (I use the feed myself, after all!), so if an ad doesn't feel like a good fit for the feed, or it's scammy/predatory, I won't allow it. I hope that helps. 💙

I'm pretty fine with it personally as long as it's stated it's an ad, which you've discussed, and also as long as there's no malware or scam ads Ads don't generally bother me too much if they feel cleanly like others just promoting their work, but any sketchy links always puts me off of anything.

It definitely seems like it was pretty inevitable this would need to be done eventually if community members are hosting feeds out of their own pocket (not to mention general maintenance and cost of your time) I've not looked into how feeds are hosted so I haven't had a clue.

Reading through the comments, I feel like I'm in the minority. Do what you need to do to be sustainable. Keep being transparent. One in a hundred skeets doesn't seem like that much. God knows we've all seen the accounts that throw 25 skeets across at a time for their finished game.

As long as I can plainly see what's an ad, I don't really have a problem with it. There's the other side, that people that do things /for/ developers can then use that to get some extra traction on /their/ work. I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't mind seeing some tooling being shilled

In twitter I like it coz I'd rather that than the countless crypt 0 and gen🅰️ℹ️ products Here for me indie has always been promoting something so yeah I don't mind It's just business as usual Especially since it doesn't look any different than regular posts

i think this is a bad idea. one of the best things about this app is the lack of advertising, and the genuineness of it all. running ads on the best game dev feed on here might honestly ruin this feed for me, please don't do it if you can afford it. I'd much rather support a patreon or something.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Honestly, if ads end up making the feed feel less genuine I'll end up removing them. I also use the feeds, so they have to be up to snuff for me. 😁 As for the Patreon thing, I actually mentioned that in the quoted skeet. 😉

Trezy@trezy.codes

Also, if there's demand for an ad-free version I may do a subscription (Ko-fi, Patreon, etc) for a couple bucks a month to get access to an ad-free version of the feed (or maybe the ads just won't show up for you, I dunno). We'll see. Unfortunately I've gotta support my work somehow.

I feel like with the Internet, we discovered a possibility where we don't have to navigate content we like with ads. However, as we still live in a "money pays the bills" world, as long as I know that it helps good projects/helps me discover stuff I can relate to, I'm ok with it :)

Did we really discover a way to exist without ads, or did it just take a while for us to realize the financial burden was being placed on creators? I feel like that’s an important part of the conversation that’s often missing from the generic “ads are bad” argument.

Don’t get me wrong: I agree that ads suck in general. The issue is that there has to be a path to sustainability for cost-intensive projects, otherwise we’re just hurting creatives.

I might be able to handle a few static ads to maintain your excellent gamedev algorithm moving forward. Autoplay video ads I tend to avoid at the expense of whatever media it is attached to.

I don't think I'd disallow video ads, but since ads in our case are just skeets with the #ad hashtag they'd be subject to the same restrictions as any other skeet. They'll have to respect your Bluesky/browser settings. 😉

I think as long as the ad posts are properly moderated to prevent any issues that could arise with repeat posts n whatnot, I would not mind if ppl could pay to have a little boost on the feed if need be. Also having ads clearly marked as such would be nice if possible.

Yeah, I’ll be vetting every offer that comes through for quality and relevance. I think we also solved the issue of ads not being flagged as such. ☺️

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. Are you saying that large corps will take advantage of me if I allow ads? Or just that money corrupts and even if I'm well-intentioned things will go awry?

I have considered this. I think I've been a decent steward of the community here and I've demonstrated not only that I have decent judgment, but also that I am willing to admit when I'm wrong or I fuck up. If ads aren't working, I hope y'all will tell me and give me the grace to solve it.

Not sure I feel super comfortable with ads not being labeled as ads. I can't complain about ads supporting a free platform, but it needs to be apparent that's what I'm looking at.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I know Graze is working on getting that sorted with Bluesky, but for the time being there's just not a mechanism to indicate an ad. 😞

I think if you looked deeper into the thread you would have found one of the many responses where I point out that we've found a solution until Bluesky gives us a better alternative. 😉 "You guys" is just me. I'm trying to find a way to support my work. That's why I started this conversation. 🤷🏻‍♂️

We'll be requiring the #ad hashtag for all ads, so you should be able to block them using mute words. That said, I hope you give these a shot. I'm talking to potential advertisers about a trial run, and I'm hopeful that the ads we put up are useful rather than spammy or problematic. 💙

I would be okay with this as long as the 3 are met: 1. Ads are marked clearly. 2. Ads stay relevant (ppl advertising art, music, programming for hire. Or ads from devs for their game, no scam mobile/AI games). 3. It stays a reasonable ratio between ads and regular posts, a.k.a. not too many ads.

Yeah, I may write up a document detailing what I’d accept for ads. For example, I don’t think I’ll accept ads for game releases since they’re not as relevant to game devs as they would be to gamers.

Do you use any paid tools? I'm confused as to why you think 'something someone does to make stuff nice for people' should be unpaid forever. Like, 'not making money from a cool thing you do' is fine, but 'actively losing more and more money the more popular things get' feels bad.

i very much appreciate the block on game releases, you're right that it's not as relevant for devs. I've been noticing that on reddit/Twitter/YouTube, some devs advertise CONSTANTLY, and sometimes in these really disingenuous ways, like disguising a devlog as a video essay. and I'm really over it

A few thoughts: obviously ads often suck, but only when they’re intrusive/irrelevant. Most people actually like seeing an ad for a thing they want and didn’t know about. I discovered Skald: Against the Black Priory that way.

I also don’t think they have to be dev related. That might be nice, but it also might feel more intrusive than an obvious ad for a game. Besides, i think most of us like playing games and so it doesn’t feel to me like I need it all to be work-focused. The #ad tag is a nice idea.

Finally, you can tune frequency. I feel like people are worried about too many ads, but that can be adjusted as needed. The only way I see this working without ads is in a patreonesque form where people are billed a tiny amount monthly. The Kofi thing would require you posting regularly asking for $

Yeah, there's another thread in here somewhere about going the patronage route instead of ads. Unfortunately, the numbers aren't there. Larger feeds have tried it and gotten zero traction. Thru this skeet I've made ~$25, but I don't post big, widely syndicated things like this very often.

I get that. Still, I hope you give it a shot. I'm talking to potential advertisers about a trial run, and I'm hopeful that the ads we put up are useful and improve the feed rather than being spammy or problematic. 💙

The platform we use now — @graze.social — offers monetization via ads. Ads in this case are just regular skeets that folks pay to have injected into the feed. I can decline ads, I can control how often they show up, I can revoke an ad if things get weird... basically, I have a lot of control.

Are the ads controllable enough that you'd be able to enforce a submission format that could self-identify as an ad? Or does graze already have a large enough of a games/gamedev-ad pool that you'd be pulling from whatever offers they already have?

Definitely more direct involvement/work on your part but it might be cool to let people already in/engaging in the bsky gamedev community publish ads for their release announcements or whatnot. I agree though that no visible identification on ads in feed feels a bit icky.

First thing: Graze doesn’t have an ad pool since it’s not an ad network. Advertisers need to pick feeds and submit their campaigns. At that point it’s in the feed owner’s hands. I’d likely need to do some soliciting to get people to come advertise. 😅 But I can totally enforce the #ad convention!

Trezy@trezy.codes

Yeah, I actually got a message from @devingaffney.com (Graze) suggesting exactly that! 🥰

One of my concerns is that there's no indicator that something is an ad. You may be able to recognize it because it shows up more regularly than other skeets or seems out of place, but you're technically seeing ads that don't look like ads, and that feels weird.

Yup, that's what we've settled on! 😉

Yup, I've settled on that being a hard rule! 😁

I considered doing this with @ozone.birb.house since it already has wide adoption across my community, but I decided it was probs a waste because it has to be opt-in. I like the idea of making ads more obvious, I just don’t like that the visibility has to be discovered to be useful.

You're right to feel weird. Folk are sensitive about what is content vs what is sponsored. If the ad service doesn't have a way of identifying its content, consider solving the issue with a CSS style. Make the distinction obvious.

Unfortunately, I don't have any control over the CSS people see. I think we've got another solution, tho! 🥰

this specifically is an absolute deal breaker for me. as much as I'd rather not have ads at all, I'd be fine with them if they were obvious. if they look like normal posts, that's not cool, that's deceptive, and I'm very much not a fan although my top choice is no ads, if that's feasible

Yeah, does having the #ad hashtag do the trick for you? I've gotten that suggestion from several folx, and I can guarantee that all accepted ads have the requisite hashtag.

The plus side is that even a small number of ads (think 10 or fewer being shown once every ~100 skeets) would help support all of my feeds immensely.

Not opposed as long as it is disclosed clearly that some posts are paid promotions. Can you require those posts being labeled by a labeler listed in the feed description, for instance? I will say, 10 per 100 is a lot of ads to me, that's US Twitter level of ads, which is not 'normal' to me.

I also think I'll _mostly_ keep it limited to ads that are relevant to game dev. Game jams, game engines, conferences, etc. So... what are y'all's thoughts? Is it a bad idea? Are there other options for monetizing that I'm not thinking of? Are there other issues I haven't considered?

United States law certainly appears to require it. Platform support for the disclosures would certainly make it easier. Perhaps BlueSky could add a "sponsored" label and augment the labeling system with a way to give the reason for a label. www.ftc.gov/business-gui...

I’m not opposed to ads, but not having proper disclosure it’s a deal away for me. I believe it may also not be legal in some markets. If you found a way to disclose that they were ads, I personally would be okay with them.

Yeah, I think we've solved the disclosure issue! 😁

If ads only appear under conditions you specify, can you not require "[Ad]" at the start, or #Ad as a hashtag, as a condition of use? I realise this stuff will add to your burden if not automatic. Of course I would prefer to live an ad-free life, but I'm not paying to be here, so can't expect it.

Yeah! See quoted skeet. 🥰 As for the ads, my personal goal would be for every ad to feel like it deserves the space it’s taking up. No low effort skeets, and nothing that’s completely irrelevant for game devs.

Trezy@trezy.codes

Yeah, I actually got a message from @devingaffney.com (Graze) suggesting exactly that! 🥰

Ideally you could be compensated for the time you put into the feed without ads - but we don't live in an ideal world. I appreciate your labor. If ads need to happen to support your work - so be it. Sounds like you already figured out the main issues of labeling ads and % of ads in the feed so 👍

That's totally fair. I tried to explain my philosophy i nthe quoted skeet. TL;DR - I also use the feed so I'm invested in making sure ads don't compromise the integrity of the feed. 💙

Trezy@trezy.codes

I appreciate that perspective. My goal is for the ads I run to be relevant and useful to the community. I have a pretty high bar for quality (I use the feed myself, after all!), so if an ad doesn't feel like a good fit for the feed, or it's scammy/predatory, I won't allow it. I hope that helps. 💙

As long as, like you said, the ads are clearly marked with a hashtag, I have no problem with that. Do what you have to do! Also, I think it's cool that they give you this kind of control over the skeets that are injected as ads.
