One of these moms joined tiktok with the username doormat mom because she viewed being expected to respect her daughter's boundaries and expecting apologies when she was hurt as terrible treatment, that she's now free from because they're estranged.

These parents will sometimes use their more significant financial resources, largely due to generational luck, to lure the children back in. Strings very attached. When the kids can't tolerate the renewed abuse, and end contact again, they will then use that as proof the children were using them.

Exactly this. Precisely. And then tried to absolutely ruin me once that final separation was made … it’s a very predictable cycle once you recognize it and stop taking it personally. 😒

It may have been the writer but having it in quotes implies one of the parents said it. And you're right, it's a stupid use of it. I think whoever said that probably is equally bad at getting criticism.

I talked to a therapist about setting up times to be home to call my father only for him to be out because he “forgot” he had symphony tickets. The therapist pointed out that my father could call me if he wanted to. It’s been 8 years and he hasn’t called.

My stepmother used to complain that I never called her and my dad. They live on the other side of town and I haven’t spoken to them in 4 years because I blocked my stepmother’s number (for many good reasons) and apparently my own father can’t call me on his own.

My mother kept calling me only when she wanted me to buy her something. I told her that I would no longer be buying things for her, and that maybe she should try calling me because she loved me and just waned to talk. She refused for six years and didn't even call when she was dying.

Almost the same thing over here. After years of scheduling calls only to have him bail right beforehand (and disappointing my kid!), I just stopped initiating. Haven’t heard from him in almost two years. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Almost every therapist I had as a teenager drilled into me that I must endure my parent's abuse because he only wanted to "protect me". I was badgered into telling him I loved him and his AP despite their emotional torture. Children want to love their parents. They don't go NC for fun.

The harmful behaviour: Unchecked addiction. Physical abuse. Emotional abuse. Theft. Love that you're acting as though the parents misspoke one time and the kids flounced.

Once I was no longer useful in being a dependent for tax purposes, or someone that would give money or have things to just take, my father stopped talking to me, and sought to be the parasite with my sister and other family. He is alone now, and honestly do not really care.

This is some loser energy “your licensed mental healthcare professional is wrong. So let me publicly insult you about being a whiny lil bitch so you’re guilted into interacting with me again. And then I’ll never let you live it down”. And you said “print it”.

“Parents publicly blast their adult children for cutting them off” sounds like a chill and not-at-all-toxic way to deal with it, can’t imagine why their kids don’t want to be around them

As a person who can relate I appreciate the humor in the phrasing of it taking years for the parents to even notice their narcissistic bubbles had been dead-malled. “(5 years of silence) Hey! Nobody’s here to react to my drama!” Tumbleweeds drift past

Funnily enough it was found that parents who were genuinely estranged for reasons outside of their behaviour- the child choosing drugs, cults or an abusive spouse- found themselves very UNWELCOME in this communities.

I imagine that there is some truth to that, although it took me a minute to decipher the double negatives in what you said. So you mean the maga loonies don't care about the parents whose kids are genuinely in crisis, right?

Wild. Wonder if my Mom is going to personally get my sister's husband back from Mexico and then apologize for voting for the person who if forcing her to choose between her family and living in the US... nah, probably not.

I don’t have the money for therapy. But I also don’t have the patience to put up with my abusers any longer. Many of us have cut ties with parents because they have no accountability and no interest in changing. Consequences! They’re not just for kids!

This I believe: children owe nothing to their parents. If there is a debt, it flows the other way. I never asked to be born, I am here because they chose to have a child. I don't think that obligation and debt is the best way to model a relationship, but if that's the model, they owe me.

I don't have kids, largely because I was afraid I'd replicate my parents' behaviors and I didn't want to harm another human. I do have cats. My cats owe me _nothing_. I chose to adopt them, love them, care for them. It's an obligation I chose, and I will fulfill it because I love them.

And if my cat decides that the best use of its one wild and precious life is to hiss at me from under the daybed, well. I will continue to feed and care for it, and live in hope that someday, it will trust me. Because the little beastie needs my love can care. And I promised to provide it.

I cannot fathom how someone can choose to have a child and have less of a sense of obligation to an actual human person than I have to a goddamn cat. Don't get me wrong, cats are _great_.

if you didn't want to get estranged, you shouldn't have estranged 'em. reminds me of something Anne LaMott said about family and writers: "If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better.”

The fact that these grown adults are publicly complaining about this and blaming mental health professionals just tells me their kids were 100% right to cut them off. Kids don't just randomly cut off their parents for no reason. Die mad about it. Just know you'll be dying mad alone. 🤷‍♀️

How many of these parents threatened to disown the kids for one thing or another? How many people heard that threat from their parents? I’ll start: 🙋🏼‍♀️

That woman looks like someone you'd cut out of your life. Also, they can speak up as much as they want, but they can't force people to hang out with them, respect them, or care for them, so enjoy running your mouth to empty air, I guess.

O and like others have said, you aren't a doormat if nobody wants to interact with you. I have some extended family members i dont like too, I'm not taking advantage of them by not bothering with them.

Maybe the provably bad parent should go to a therapist instead of the press. This year, due to the illness and death of the woman who raised me, I've had to have contact with my mum for the first time in 20 years. Within 2 minutes she demonstrated why I was right to cut her out of my life.

My mom took the side of the man who sexually abused me when I was 4. The trauma of my situation is tragically the majority for all these situations. Fuck all this bullshit trying to guilt adult kids to keep their shitty abusive parents in their lives.

Gee, you don't think the whole "DARVO" narcissist BS is why the toxic parent being left out of their adult kid's lives means the parent feels like a "doormat" when all that has really happened is their kid is no longer giving them any attention or energy.

My mother seemed to very quickly clock the evaporation of my tolerance when my son was born. She hasn’t really changed, and I don’t think it would work if she lived less than a day’s drive away, but for now she toes the line required to stay in our lives.

I appreciate you writing this article because I like seeing the fits they throw. Sucks to be you, asshole parents! Sucks to lose! Haha! Like you're the wall street journal it's not like anyone is going to think you have anything worth hearing about healthy family relationships lol

Oh, fuck all the way off. Parents who deny their kids access to the single source of generational wealth and stability that most of us are capable of scraping together are fucking assholes. 'We're assholes and we're proud of it!' Good! Fuck -all the way off-.

Venomous motherfuckers who feel -entitled- to the affection and respect of people they made being shocked when they're suddenly dying alone by their own choice? Perhaps making someone doesn't mean they MUST love you. Perhaps it means taking responsibility and extending grace even when it's hard.
