A huge betrayal. Won't lower bills. Won't give us more energy security. Won't insulate from price shocks. And sends a clear message to the world that we are backing new oil and gas drilling. www.lbc.co.uk/article/ed-m...

More cowardice from this government. A few ill informed talking heads in the media spouting populace nonsense and we have another U turn. The BBC and print media are too afraid to challenge and point out the facts that our electricity and gas prices are fixed by the markets.

The fossil fuel lobbyists are opening the champagne today. Such a pathetically weak and stupid thing to do from this #Labour #Government bsky.app/profile/beyo...

Beyond Fossil Fuels@beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social

A reminder amid the noise: wind and solar outperformed fossil fuels in electricity supply last year. The transition is still happening. We need to get rid of volatile, costly gas that harms the planet, energy security and household energy bills! Our take 👇 beyondfossilfuels.org/2026/03/17/r...

Why is it exactly that most politicians have a problem with English? Extinction is not the best or only option, why are they so obsessed with trying to achieve it? It’s the height of stupidity & betrayal, in fact let’s be honest, it’s not stupidity, They know the consequences!

Serious question — how much would UK energy security actually change if we *didn't* do new drilling? Most UK gas is still imported, right? Has anyone modeled the impact on prices or imports either way?

Exactly right on this. And the part nobody's talking about is the 2023 UN report saying new oil and gas projects directly undermine net zero goals. Even BP’s own analysis says UK production barely dents global prices.

I get the frustration, but I’ve yet to see solid modeling that new North Sea drilling would meaningfully drop UK bills. Global oil prices set the pace, so local extraction doesn’t really insulate us much.

It’s so bizarre. Ed knows this won’t lower bills. He’s argued against it numerous times. So sad to see this stupid decision from a guy I have liked for a long time.

Where is the vision, where is the political leadership, the political courage? Instead of looking towards the future and seizing the opportunities that brings, instead of being at the forefront of the green revolution, they seem to prefer wallowing in the past.

Not if we continue to build on renewables alongside it. IT's a minor issue. The main thing is that renewables will continue to be built. Stick to ONE messaging. Affordability and taxing the greediest......

Did you not get the whatsapp message? This week you're supposed to be going after the Green Party for not talking about the environment enough not too much.

Onshore renewables are far quicker and cheaper to install than opening up this gas field, and they would last a lot longer. This decision is utterly irresponsible from this government. It’s a knee jerk reaction to the right wing media, and it stinks of desperation.

When you make daft decisions, there is always a price to pay. The price the UK, rather England is paying, is the same as Fantine in Les Mis...selling her hair to cheapy, out of desperation.

I’d still bet on Miliband knowing more about the science in this than you’re giving credit. I suspect he knows more about the reality of energy right now than you. Have you considered that you’re basing your campaigns on the social media platforms doing more to pollute the planet is hypocritical?

We absolutely should be supporting more gas and oil drilling because we are not in a position where we can stop relying on fossil fuels. It's ridiculous to think we can just stop and turn to renewable energy. It's not happening any time soon. We need to be honest with ourselves about this stuff.

Disgusted but not surprised! More proof (if it was needed) that the so called "Labour" party serve corporate lobbyists and big business!!! #VoteGreen 💚

We all know he's personally opposed to this lunacy. Seems like McFadden has gone, but having every policy driven by answering Farage and Badenoch is still very much alive. A government of cowards.

We have to back Oil Drilling. We have no choice, we are making ourselves poorer when the rest of the world is sticking two fingers up to the green agenda. We are so reliant on oil and we can’t leave ourselves exposed like this.

It's rule by Facebook/X. Labour think that all these DRILL BABY, DRILL memes represent the UK population as a whole. When it all gets used up in a week, we'll be back to square one.

What did you expect, these bastards are all in the back pockets of the O&G lobbyists. They only care about looking after their sponsors and backers.I'm sick to the back teeth of scum politicians selling out the country,if there's a wrong way to do it labour will find it like their Tory predecessors

the lies told during the Scottish Independence referendum, oil reserves in the North Sea are running out 🤔🤔 lying feckers (Tories and Labour both complicit in the lie before anyone comes back and says Labour weren’t in power). Scotland is green energy rich the sooner we get independence the better

I remember it well. Lies upon lies told to scare voters against voting for their own interests! To See Ourselves is an amazing documentary portraying events leading up to the referendum. It’s no secret why BBC refused to show it. I’ll try to find the free view link 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

So you see, why Labour the Tories & reform are all squabbling over oil or fusion they're both united in attacking green energy which is the logical way forward, but they can't earn from it & it won't power the datacentres, it's resource guys fighting over the control for our future energy systems.

MM@oneeyeonthereich.bsky.social

Two important stories being buried by the zone flooding attack on our senses are the Brown/MIT shootings & the merger of TAE & Trump Media They're the same story This is the first time I've seen anyone in the media talking about TAE Dig deep & the people behind everything appear ResoUrce bros!

MM@oneeyeonthereich.bsky.social

What if the MIT Professor, an award winning nuclear physicist who studied Fusion was the primary target in the Brown/MIT shootings? What if he was on the verge of a breakthrough? What if the person who stood to lose the most in that case was Elon Musk? eu.36kr.com/en/p/3598164...

It's a crass decision by Milliband, it'll give credence to the right wing drill baby drill loons like Farage & Badenoch. Our energy bills won't come down or give us energy security until we cut ties with the volatile markets

How much money is this going to cost the taxpayer? This is yet another disappointment in this government. I hope there is a Green candidate in my constituency!

But it will give more profits to Labour's Millionaire & Corporate donors. All that Labour is now is the red tinged faction of the Millionaire Donor's Party.

Miliband was the only* Starmer Cabinet member who I thought might not be a Blue Labour clone, Maggie Thatcher admirer, or sponsored oligarch asset. Proved wrong! There is nobody of principle or value left! *Raynor is still there. The only one not handpicked by the charlatan Keir. Vote Green!

The volumes involved are trivial in terms of their impact on climate change. Try to be just a little realistic. China is in the process of building a new batch of coal fired power stations that will do far more harm. You'd achieve more by banning Chinese EVs.

This despite the fact that hundreds of licenses granted by the Tories raised a grand total of 36 days of gas. What a waste, especially after the storage announcement which was genuinely good news.

I made a post of this earlier, which popped up just after I had listened to your interview with Tessa Khan. It's crazy, evil. I just wonder... if Ed Miliband grew some integrity and recognized that he really can't change policy from within the Labour party... would you even have him in the Green P?

The lack of whips is such a great aspect of the GP, but surely the leadership has to have final say on accepting an MP from another party? I think Miliband's one of the better Labour ones, but not exactly socialist.

It's SO predictable and so depressing. I would have thought a few actions that would instantly help - big reduction in cost of public transport, encouraging wfh and EV ownership and increasing renewables, a the only quick step towards energy independence.

FFS so the UK is totally in thrall to the USA and petroleum companies. Fuck oil we need more renewables and electrification of our world. Why be held hostage by a few countries and corporations? Micro nuclear, hydrothermal, hydrogen, wind, tidal, hydroelectric, solar, the UK can have it all.

They should have named this find Schroedingers. Schroedingers gas field, somehow simultaneously too small to make a material difference to gas imports, but also so large it's a climate disaster....

They’re just doing this cos they think they’ll be more popular for it. Although people who understand how the gas market works will know it won’t make any difference! They’re just chasing votes at this point. They don’t even care what damage they’re doing.

Starmer and Company are going to claim this is a temporary solution to keep our energy generation up during the crisis and transition. Expect there isn't really a transition happening because its seen as too much bother to update infrastructure. Nothing is more permanent that a temporary solution.

This will be the same Labour Party, along with the Tories and Lib Dems, that lied before the Scottish independence referendum of 2014 to the effect that the resources of the North Sea were running out.

And he won't even do something "clever", like obliging the output to be sold into the UK market at a cost plus price, or a capped price or anything that begins to move us away from global oil markets...

Zack, mate, fully onboard with renewables but it’s not either or here — we can do both. With regards to expediency in cushioning our bills from Trumps derangement, I think it’s only sensible to tap into what’s left of our reserves in the mean time, even if there’s barely anything left.

I don't think new licenses will even start producing in the urgent short term, and most privately drilled north sea fuels are exported anyway. Putting those resources into accelerated renewables and grid upgrades will get better results and build infrastructure worth keeping.

No Zack. If you read the article, it says that he MAY approve drilling the Jackdaw gas field, but will NOT approve Rosebank. As the majority of UK homes are heated by gas, I think he is looking to ensure that we have enough gas for next winter. The govt has a duty to protect the UK population.

I'm a Green Party member, but we must stick to facts and not kick up outrage just for the sake of scoring points over Labour. That is the tactics of Farage - don't sink to his level.

Miliband does not belong in Labour. It's more obvious every day and not only because he is a zionist, ie a racist, supporter of a colonial terrorist genocidal and antisemitic foreign State.

I’m sure these big companies with their shareholders will fill all the oil and gas to sell under market price Mr Milliband 🤦‍♀️ I’m sure we wind also be giving them massive tax breaks instead of investing in a renewable sustainable grid

The Scottish courts will block it again like last time they tried this shit. Our courts get a day because it's Scottish territorial waters.

Why are Labour still kowtowing to the right wing mob? Do they really think this kind of policy will attract more support or is it the oil lobby hard at work again?

Read Dr Aaron Thierry today, on why the atmosphere is retaining ever more of our greenhouse gas emissions. Then don’t even think of opening new reserves. #Leaveitintheground bsky.app/profile/thie...

Dr. Aaron Thierry@thierryaaron.bsky.social

1/ Why is atmospheric CO₂ accelerating faster than fossil fuel emissions are growing? The answer is buried in the data, and it's more worrying than most people realise. A thread. 🧵👇

No it isn’t Transitions aren’t linear Hydrocarbon use isn’t going away anytime soon Transportation is rapidly electrifying but we need hydrocarbons to build out the infrastructure Maximalist policies are the most likely to fail - this is too important to fail

As I said before, the labour party is snookered, and they now find themselves in the same race as the tories and reform, arguing over the same tiny segment of the electorate, having abandoned their traditional base, assuming it would always be there—until you came along 👏

Instead of investing in and incentivizing renewables as a matter of urgency, we will continue to subsidize fossil fuel companies with tax breaks etc. All the money we throw at them should go to renewables. The addiction and indulgence must stop.

Any decent government would currently be shouting from the rooftops that this crisis shows that reliance on and indulgence in fossil fuel industries must end right now, and massive urgent investment and incentivisation in renewables must be a national priority. But no.

The Iran War fundamentally changes the security of our gas supplies and we need options. Meanwhile renewables build out continues at full tilt. When the facts change, either you can change policy to reflect reality, or you can engage in political posturing. Sad to see you've chosen the latter.

New licences won't help with the immediate crisis and they tie us to fossil fuels for yet another decade, assuming it even lasts that long. It also means we're stuck with an increased level of fossil fuel lobbyists engaging in corruption. We could put those resources into accelerating renewables.

Which part is political posturing? Labour won’t lower bills Labour won’t give us more energy security Labour won’t insulate from price shocks Labour have sent a clear message… When the ‘facts’ change and there is a need to change policy, it should lead to immediate action that helps people

"Cutting bills" won't reduce energy usage, insofaras i can parse this cludge. There still won't be enough energy, prices will still surge and you'll waste loads of money All talk, not enough thought

AFAICS Jackdaw can start producing gas by this autumn. I hope it's not needed. But thr way things are going it could well be a choice between using that to offset disrupted supplies from the ME or not enough gas for heating next winter. What choice would you make?

How will that help? It will be at least 5 years before it produces and it will be sold at a price that is dictated by world markets. Fantasy politics

FACTCHECK UPDATE: No, the UK can't "be more like Norway" in the North Sea 🇬🇧 extracted most of its oil & gas after privatisation 🇳🇴 has much more left due to state stewardship 🤔Lawson spent UK windfall on tax cuts; Norway got a sovereign wealth fund www.carbonbrief.org/...

If we want secure jobs, a safe climate for the next generation & true energy independence the only route is through renewables. We know it works, it lower bills & makes us safe from energy shocks. We just need politicians brave enough to stand up to the oil & gas lobby & their mates in Reform.

I'm one of 'his people' and I want to hear it. I know Ed Miliband is trying to do the right thing even though he's swimming against the tide of many in the Labour leadership. He also has to consider the global situation and plan for next winter if it continues.

How are you going to power the country when it's winter and the winds not blowing Dave? Where's all this renewable energy going to be stored? 🙄

The problem is the right have a point - we do need energy security while we expand renewables. We should drill and refine North Sea fossil fuels as a state venture, sell and store domestically only, and invest all revenue into a rapid rollout of renewables infrastructure, training and research.

I live in Spain, their massive investment in diverse clean energy, and now building a new grid along with relative food security, gave Sanchez the sovereignty and energy security to stand up to Trump.

There's a gap; where previous political generations sat on their hands and did the bare minimum until pushed. This is the current push. I'm very close to installing solar and battery, it's not going to be cheap but it's worth doing. I'm not going to switch off the gas boiler before it's installed.

I had solar panels, battery and a Sunamp water heater installed in 2024. They're really paying back - best decision I ever made. Still on gas for heating. Need to insulate my 1950s stone house (can't have cav wall insulation) before I can switch to heat pump. Can recommend Sunamp water heater 👍

You don’t at all, that’s just a myth. You just need bigger rads to emit the required amount of heat at the low flow temperatures, which is calculated during the heat loss survey. Obviously insulation is great but heat pumps need insulation in exactly the same way as gas boilers.

I think it's probably a real challenge to get any such policy that's in the interests of ordinary people past the backstabbing representatives of spiteful crank oligarchs who control Labour

The oil gets sold to the market (cheap) & UK public have to buy it back (expensive) so fuel giants can make massive profits. We know this already so why is this the answer? Remove the link between the costs to the public & market gas prices! & stop "daily rate" hikes, rip-off!
