“transplant” discourse is great because you get to see how easily people can swaddle their insular, reactionary beliefs with left-coded language
I truly don’t understand this “transplant” nonsense. The whole THING about NYC is that ppl come here from other places to mutate into New Yorkers! TO SEE IF THEY CAN BE KING OF THE HILL, TOP OF THE HEAP! Imho a rando who moved here a year ago is the MOST NY person. Welcome Ohio rando, have a bagel

It’s underrated how many of the cardinal achievements of modernity are things that allow for you to interact with people you don’t personally trust. “Contracts are enforceable” and “my safety doesn’t depend on someone being willing to avenge me” really changes the ways you can live.

At the risk of starting Discourse, this media dynamic is exactly how the myth of "Dems made Tim Walz stop calling the GOP weird" got accepted as ironclad fact.
"well Dems are actually betraying us-" you think that because there is a constant tide of coverage of dipshit nobody "strategists" always trying to make the great left-punching Fetch happen, not because there is an actual surge of treachery from the majority of Dems in office.

At some point there’s going to be a reckoning between the alleged aspiration of the left to promote immigration, migration, LGBT safety, etc, and the fundamental tension that the much-more-prevalent-in-practice “people who live somewhere deserve to control if their area changes” belief
You either welcome the stranger or you don't. There is no "only build housing for the truly morally deserving and/or people I want to hang out with" policy lever, no matter how hard you post about Community Land Trusts.

shouting into the void here, I know, but you are literally living in the thought experiment "Would you use an app owned by Adolf Hitler?"

This is a good example of something that is entirely political (the government dislikes higher ed and foreign people) and has large economic impacts but will get less attention than "woke one" from our pundit class.
There will probably be far fewer foreign students on college campuses nationwide this fall following the Trump administration’s crackdown on international visas. A new report predicts international enrollment will decrease by 9.5 percent this fall.

If anyone tells you that water is the limiting factor for the growth of cities in the western United States, they are either a NIMBY who is lying to you or a useful idiot who has been lied to by a NIMBY.
Water is not an obstacle to larger cities in California. Urban water use is less than 1/5 of water used in the state. The number of gallons used has decreased from a peak in the 1990s due to efficiency and water recycling, even as the population increased by several million people.

"The people who work on farms often don't own them" is something that would have been completely intuitive to 99% of people for 99% of human history but is completely unintelligible to the people who make US public policy.
A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.

Yeah, this absolutely drives me crazy. This is not my job. I'm not a reporter and I'm not an elected official. I do this when and how I feel like it. Not only am I under no obligation to anyone to publish a take about every single subject, it would be grossly irresponsible for me to do that.
wtf. any time anyone asks a semi-public figure "why are you silent on X" it's like "dude, I don't have all the time in the world to opine on every single subject". lnkd.in/p/gKKWgdMz

the point of most conspiracism isn't the prescription, it's the diagnosis. it lets people feel like they are cutting through complex information and accessing a secret truth. lab leak itself isn't always conspiratorial but this fauci stuff gives people a little hit of that.
The thing I can't really figure out about Lab Leak Theory is like... so what if it were true? Like is the idea that we could sue China for damages? That's not gonna work. It wouldn't really change anything both to how we responded to Covid and how we act going forward.

climate change is real. all costs of beating climate change must be born by other people, who produce emissions purely for fun, unlike the emissions I produce, which are all life or death necessities
In 2026 the modal center left opinion is: Climate change is real! But the actuarial risk posed by climate change? Fake news spread by usurious financial institutions.
