James Cameron says he must find a cheaper way to produce the Avatar movies in order to continue making them. https://bit.ly/4qnlOpl

Imagine how much more it would cost if he had to hire talented writers? “ChatGPT, gimme Dances With Wolves except it’s about blue sexy alien cat ladies. Okay, now do it again, but water. Okay again, but fire. Then wind. Then heart. Haha now make Captain Pandora settle down with the nice cat ladies.”

For real? From the amount of money Cameron has brought to Hollywood, not just from movies but the technology he developed to make them, not to mention oceanography, the guy deserves to make as many of them as he wants for however much it costs. It would be a fraction of the impact he's had.

That only works as long as the genAI companies are subsidizing the price, once OpenAi and the like have to make a profit they wont be cheaper anymore, if they are even cheaper currently in the first place.

Came here to say this. He's financially invested in it. I bet every VFX person who's been tailoring their techniques for all three films is delighted by this and won't let anything slip about him at all

He's literally already on the board of directors for a company bragging about using AI to replace visual effect artists, aka those underpaid, overworked people responsible for the only thing anyone likes about those movies.

has anybody in here even watched the last avatar movie? I've never heard of a real person discussing it, the plot, their thoughts, or even having watched it in the first place I never even watched the original because 3D doesn't work on me and everybody said not to bother if not for that

I'd love to make fun of these shitty movies, but he's lying. He's making half a dozen of them at a time and they inexplicably all make two billion dollars. What he means is he would really love to pay VFX artists slave wages because he doesn't think they count as people.

Meanwhile a talented and extremely well-credited VFX artist I know had to pack up and leave CA and move back to tx and start a completely different career track bc she couldn’t find enough stability working over there but go off JC

Or maybe consider that the franchise has run its course and it's time to be creative and make something NEW instead of just rehashing the same stuff over and over.

Huh, you're right. For some reason, I had the memory in mind that I heard Cameron say he wanted to come back to flesh out a planned trilogy for Tintin, but wanted to finish Avatar first. I suppose it must have been Spielberg, then, who said he wanted to finish some other project before coming back.

Practical effects and puppetry? I'm only half joking. Cameron made some of his best movies (the original Terminator movie and Aliens) when his budget was limited and he was forced to think creatively to achieve effects shots.

I apologize for my ignorance, but I assume the cost it takes to build a puppet or miniature is more then it costs to animate it with CG That and puppeteers are unionized and CGI artists aren’t (I really hope they get to be someday)

The cost per second for a CGI effects shot in a Hollywood movie is staggering now. The budget for Cameron's 1986 movie Aliens (all practical effects, suits, puppets, miniatures) was $18.5m. Adjusted for inflation that's about $53m today. The latest Avatar movies cost about $400m each.

Food $200 Data $150 Rent $800 Avatar movies $697,000,000 Utility $150 someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying

Not spending 13 years in between films would have kept fans like me on. I saw the first film when I was 23. I was 36 when the second one released. Its not that good of a story to keep me on board for that long.

I mean... the last one made a ton of money worldwide so, why would he need to produce them cheaper ? Does he want even more money ? This statement reeks of genAI.
