While I don’t ride or die for Pete Buttigieg, the vitriol directed at him is completely insane. “When I was younger I wished that I could have taken a pill to turn me straight; but I have accepted and embraced my identity now” is an *extremely* common sentiment from Millennial and older gay people!

When Pete Buttigieg says he would take medicine that makes gay men straight. What do you think is Mr. Buttigieg's attitude towards gays, men and medicine?

In my favorite high school movie (Mean Girls), Regina told people at school that Janice was a lesbian. The RUMOR about Janice was so traumatizing for her that, years later, she encouraged Cady to sabotage Regina. In the musical remake that came out recently, they omitted the lesbian subplot.

I grew up in uber-liberal Boston, and when I was in high school, I knew of two different kids who were *literally* kicked out of their homes because they were gay. A third kid took his life; the rumors around school was that he was also gay, contributing to his decision.

Lots of people get upset when I tell them that using the accusation of homosexuality to mock and demean straight identified people is homophobic and wrong, even when the person you’re talking about is themselves a homophobic right winger.

We have come along way from my youth and I know of two brothers, the significantly younger one came out first, the older one much later with trauma. I do think, not as an insult, but some of the most fervent homophobes are gay, as though they could hide it/gain acceptance by being the most extreme

And I think that blaming closeted gay men for homophobia is misguided when the overwhelming majority of homophobes are 100% straight people who get off on condemning people for indulging in a “sin” that they have never been tempted to commit.

I hope you won't be deterred, I made a comment once which I regretted making when a gay person who I respected told me that it hurt her that I said it and well I haven't made any comments like that since, these conversations do move people.

Yeah I mean it was quite literally mine even when I was becoming comfortable with it in high school. I remember saying basically that exact thing

I like Pete a lot, but it wasn't a good look to me when he had spent months saying he couldn't endorse zohran bc he wasn't connected to the race, it was a NY thing etc... Then he endorsed Seattle's version of Cuomo.

It’s nothing to to with who he is as a gay man, and everything to do with how he cloaks himself in the ideals of young people while upholding none of it, and benefiting from the institutions which have harmed us most. To peers he is a self-serving snake claiming entitlement to their allegiance.

Yeah its not that people don't remember its that a lot of people just werent born or were little kids in the 20th century. Hell, a lot of young adults even don't *really* remember pre-hay marriage, let alone hardcore gay bashing of years past.

Saaed Jones’s beautiful memoir described how there was no gap between “gay” and “AIDS” in his teenaged understanding of what lay ahead, and how he felt doomed before he began.

I'm just a baby gay and I immediately could have understood that. I'm not really politically invested in Buttigieg, but I don't have any reason to hate him really. When you know being something will be hard and make life difficult trying to explain to family, friends, or your community, it's scary.

It was told to me by my friends that later came out that being a gay teen was very, very hard in the 90’s, especially when there was a strong undercurrent of meanness in American culture. The 90’s liked putting targets on people’s backs.

I'm 51 and I can think of two gay men I know older than 60 that I've actually talked to back in the '80s. They were friends of my dad who lived (and still lives) in San Francisco. San Francisco being the key here.

cant relate ive always wished i had a ray that could make everyone else a queer freak. i knew "normal" fucking sucked since i was like 6 and i got yelled at for starting to eat when my food came and nobody elses was there yet.

Oh, right. His first job out of college. He was building spreadsheets for their account managers but left after 3 years because he found the work unrewarding (He’s been in public service ever since.) That’s like blaming the kid working the ticket booth at Disneyland for all the sins of Disney Corp.

“This out gay man who was sixteen years old and living in Indiana when Matthew Shepard was murdered used to wish he could be straight. This proves that he is homophobic.” Do these people hear themselves?

I can't stand Pete and I think he is soulless, fake and compromised... but this attack on him sucks so bad. This anecdote shared by him is heartbreaking and strikes me as incredibly honest

And he was raised Catholic, going to Catholic schools, and in one of the most Catholic areas of the country - the church’s whole having gay thoughts isn’t a sin but acting on them is leads pretty much directly to desperately wishing you weren’t gay

*deep breath* Young people’s ignorance of how homophobic American society was 30 years ago is a welcome sign of progress. Young people’s ignorance of how homophobic American society was 30 years ago is a welcome sign of progress. Young people’s ignorance of how homophobic American society was 30 y

45 years ago. One of the things we X-gen achieved, besides succeeding in a soft landing of USSR, and crushing apartheid, was to make everyone consider people as people.

I think @cstross.bsky.social's "Glasshouse" is GREAT for "alien levels of cultural acceptance". It is set in a culture that is like "what do you mean I can't be chibiform, nor a centaur, nor have five bodies???" Then it makes *a bunch of those people* become baseline humans with immutable gender!

"Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" being mostly forgotten now has been a real boon to Jim Carrey's career. Of course, he's also an anti-vaxxer moron, now, but he could be known as an anti-vaxxer who made one of the most over-the-top transphobic film endings in memory.

Count me among the people who have little to no memory of a pre-Will & Grace America. I remember Bush administration bullshit in the 2000s but I also remember it was an era of rising LGBTQ+ media representation and of my out middle and high school classmates being largely accepted by their peers.

A lot of it really depends on where you were! I grew up in a liberal area near San Francisco and even in the 90s we had a reasonable number of "out" queer people of various descriptions. But I knew even at the time that we were more progressive than most places.

How do you think they'd respond if they learned that Ellen risked and lost a highly rated sitcom by using it as a platform to advance LGBTQ representation in mainstream media? Is that worth more or less than being a bully in the office?

Straight cis guy here, for what it's worth: I hadn't ever considered there are gay people today who haven't ever had the thoughts Pete said he had while younger. Though I feel they should know how common that was in the past it's kinda reassuring they themselves haven't experienced it.

I still remember having to be the one to explain to a young and *amazingly* flamboyant (Seriously, Elton John would tell them to take it down a notch) what 'Friend of Dorothy' meant, and why there had to be code phrases back then. They'd never lived in a time when it wasn't okay to be out.

my kids told me about some "is that your boyfriend" joking in their school cafeteria and it was understood by everyone there as no big deal. My wife and i tried explaining to them that "in our day" that would have no question caused fights that left someone bloody.

Pete Buttigieg: I struggled with accepting my sexuality but I’m glad I eventually figured it out because I have a wonderful family now This freak: talking about his coming out journey is proof that Pete Buttigieg is Gollum

a few months ago I explained to my 41 year old lib wife that some states had anti-sodomy laws on the books until Lawrence vs Texas. both anti-sodomy laws and Lawrence vs Texas were news to her.

No one under 40 or so was sexually active during a time before effective antiretrovirals existed. Add in the modern existence of PreP and it’s no surprise people don’t have conception of the 80s and 90s.

A few years ago I had a 19-20 yo gay coworker who had been raised in an lgbt-friendly church all his life and had never known that mainstream evangelical Christianity was homophobic. God, did I envy him.

All of this is huge. My trans sister is 10 years younger than me and I am so thankful she is the the nextgen. I remember both gay marriage passing and the watershed “it gets better” campaign.

It's not as though there isn't an ongoing epidemic of self-harm among queer teenagers today! But the ability to make that conceptual connection, separates those for whom those are kids to be loved and helped, and those for whom those are cudgels to be used to bludgeon the infidels into submission.

I would say it's a universal gay experience, every single gay person has a period of time, where they wish they could be straight because we have a homophobic society, for GenZ and now Alpha kids that period might be shorter, but every single one has cried that they can't turn straight at least once
