Rainn Wilson is calling out a 'bias in the media' toward 'liberal policies' for his belief that 'The Office' could not be made today, saying it would be 'too hard to be as politically incorrect as the show was.'

Always Sunny and South Park are still making new episodes. A new Scary Movie was just released in theaters. Meanwhile the Trump admin is threatening to pull the licenses of networks that say things he doesn’t like. What is he even talking about?

Genuinely at a loss as to what "politically incorrect" aspects there even were in The Office. Not saying it wasn't a funny show, but it was socially milquetoast as fuck? Anything that might have approached edgy was just Michael being shown to be a genuinely terrible person.

Having rewatched it recently, I think he's somewhat correct since it was so blatantly ignorant, mostly from the POV of two idiots. But it couldn't be made? Come on. Always Sunny does way worse. It's just that they're poking fun at the idiots.

There’s so much “anti pc” comedy out there. Like, they just put out a new Scary Movie. Shapiro made Ladyballers, there are hundreds of anti-woke family guy clones. They just tend to suck. Maybe if he understood his industry better, he’d get more work.

"It's like they're clueless, and in their cluelessness, they're racist and insensitive, and they're always saying the wrong thing" Dude that's the entire premise of It's Always Sunny except taken to the actual furthest extreme and they're currently filming their 18th season.

That’s the freedom you get from not having to cast a wide net like network comedies Excellent show that’s allowed to go where it wants So hardcore Really great exec over there at FX I’d also point out the obvious SOUTH PARK as another example of total comedic freedom and how it succeeds

Most of the people I see complaining that "you can't do edgy comedy anymore" are just mad that they can't punch down. IASIP does incredibly vile, crass, "politically incorrect" stuff in every episode but they're careful to make sure the main characters are consistently the butt of the joke IMO.

They never seem to be aware of that show. Or some adult cartoons. Sometimes I think people think it’s wokeness when it’s really that things have been generally flattened out on major media & also what’s ‘offensive’ always changes. This isn’t new as a basic, comedy rarely ages well long before ‘woke’

Literally so much stuff that has happened since the office that is far more edgier, South Park still going strong, Family guy, hell even the Simpsons have been edgier than the American version of the office, Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Righteous Gemstones, the fact he thinks the Office is

That was the inflection point for him changing from the "quiet and outwardly dull character with hidden depths who happened to be fat" to "fat caricature that the writers occasionally remember is meant to be a human being"

There’s a concept of a theory that, as the conceit of the documentary dragged on, the workers either exaggerated their depictions for more air time or were revealed as “like that” after growing more comfortable with the idea of existing on film. Both ideas are flimsy. It was just bad writing.

The Office is still playing on television on numerous channels today, wtf is he talking about? I'm sick of fragile, white men feeling victimized by some imagined woke fantasy that they're somehow oppressed. Go eat beets, Rainn.

Wilson thought he was going to be a leading man, but, despite being the recipient of a years-long industry push, it didn't pan out. Rather than accept that the Schrute role was a career-defining lottery win for a boring/offputting character actor, he's blaming woke. As is tradition for his type.

He also used that weird line religious people use saying, "If the earth were one foot closer to the sun we would burn alive and one foot further away, we would freeze!" When he said it, i thought he was joking, but he seemed serious. That was the final nail in the coffin for me with ol Dwight.

Guess he never saw "What We Do In the Shadows" then. It ran after the office was done and got six years out. Or any other number of hit shows that in my opinion, were better than the Office ever was, and I actually liked that show. I think he's just big mad that his detective show flopped.

It probably couldn't be made today, because it would cost the network too much money. Networks would rather make reality shows, game shows, and news shows.

we had a nationally televised bloodsports session on the White House Lawn last night, during which one of the knuckle dragging hog men participating accused the black former first lady of being trans as a slur

Remind us Rainn. Which president got their feelings hurt and demanded that Colbert and Kimmel be taken off the air? Was a liberal or a conservative?

Bill Maher still has a job. The President of the United States is an open white supremacist. Almost every media organization is now owned by one of a handful of right wing billionaires who repeatedly leak eugenics takes into the atmosphere.

As with many US sitcoms, the character was not the sort of person you could meet and despise in real life. He was a ridiculous caricature who you can love specifically because he's not realistic. Unlike the US remake, the original show wasn't afraid to have unlikeable and realistic characters.

Some shows dabbled with it, even in the '70s and '80s, such as 'Fawlty Towers" and "The Young Ones", and some stand-up comedians such as Rik Mayall & Alexei Sayle made unlikeable characters part of their routine, but no one added the range of character development as was the point of "The Office".

Also, aren’t they actively making The Office today? Didn’t they lock Domhall Gleeson in a building with Oscar and a batch of UCB grads?

bro what? white bread ass show with white bread ass actors? "this is too much for the woke" -The whitest lamest person you have ever met fuck offffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

This is a bit out of context. He said it couldn't be made today because some bits are inappropriate, but he also said comedians shouldn't complain so much about cancel culture, they should write smarter jokes.

I'm not watching a whole Fox News segment, but he showed up there and said the media has a liberal bias (in a moment of unprecedented media consolidation under MAGA ownership) and unironically invoked "political correctness," so I think his position is pretty clear.

I loved The Office, but if he thinks that show was very conservative (which it sounds like what he's trying to say, as silly as it seems) so it "could not be made today" for that reason (???), then I have a really nice bridge near Brooklyn he might be interested in purchasing.

I’m thinking of the “try my gookie-gookie” but yeah it’s nothing the Simpsons didn’t do… Rainn’s got a pretty weak claim

Oh jesus, these beloved entertainers of a certain age need to learn to keep their mouths shut as they are becoming rapidly less beloved

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was canceled because of bias in the media. 60 Minutes was destroyed because of bias in the media. Black faces have been removed from multiple outlets because or bias in the media. etc… It’s not bias “toward liberal policies” thats making shows too hard to make

"woke"? Dude you can't talk about slavery, you can't say anything that makes people feel bad. You can't even acknowledge race, gender or anything. FFS you can get penalized for it. But somehow in this fool's mind, its liberal policies.

“Actor who hasn’t really done anything of note in lord knows how long cries about things he doesn’t understand” isn’t any more noteworthy than the past however many dozens of times it happened

He sold his digital platform to Participant Media in 2016 so it's not like he needs money but he seems to need attention. I'd bet he has a new publicist.

The administration is literally suing and threatening licenses over shows they don’t like. What are we even doing with this nonsensical cancel culture argument when the Feds are literally forcing cancellations.

Rainn Wilson can’t get a job is his problem. His podcast failed. Another everything is against me because woke. His discussions with Reza I listened to once but it was not interesting. Both were boring. Nuff said

They just did a UFC match on the fucking white house lawn, what delusional world are you living in where you think progressives are in power? You can clearly do whatever the fuck you want, stop bitching and do it already. This is just sad man pathetic excuses.

This especially doesn't make sense with The Office because Michael is supposed to be a dumb guy that says ignorant things. The rest of the characters don't like the offensive things he says, that's the joke. "Ha ha it's your right to say that racist thing, Michael" was literally never the game.

The English office was terrible because it’s extremely easy to write a David Brent character and just toss him into a sandbox with no believable consequences. David Brent could have been a chimpanzee and nothing would change. Edgy is just a more flattering way to describe lazy writing.

The English office couldn’t be made today because the audience for lazy cringe comedy feels stale. A nuanced character like Michael Scott who believes himself to be a champ of the people but is blinded to his own bigotry? Still fun to watch.

But also remember the episode where we found out that Oscar had a weekly trivia night in Philadelphia? Like for real? That doesn't happen. That's a two hour drive each way. No one is doing that on the regular. They should have just set it in Hanover, where they actually make paper.

Exactly. Now I wonder if the actors got more control over their characters in the last few years and this guy decided “I like nazis and Dwight does too”

There are actually a lot of pretty racist, homophobic, sexist jokes, but they are portraying the character saying them as being not funny and out of touch. The show isn’t trying to use these jokes for laughs but is trying to show how insane it would be for the normal office workers to deal with

Maybe some of the most tame popular television in modern history. It would get called too woke by a million neckbeards if it was released now because Pam doesn’t show enough cleavage or because the show has a gay main cast member.

I am 6'3 330 with 3 badly herniated discs and severe nerve and muscle damage to my legs. But the only reason I did not make the Olympics 4 x 400 relay team was because of "liberal policies". THIS LOAD OF CRAP WAS INSPIRED BY RILEY GAINES WHO FINISHED 6TH AND BLAMED A TRANS WOMAN FOR HER FINISH

If he means a show thats got 20 episode seasons released yearly and given time to gain an audience and become ingrained the the minds of every day ppl. Then yeah. Anything else is just a fabrication thats not true

Rainn Wilson - who? Person who no one remembers but for that one thing he did says stupid fucking thing because its the only way to get mentioned because no one remembers who the fuck he is and he's pissed at that. Thats what your header and sub should have said.

A lot of what made the show funny was the format. I recently had to go through cyber security training for work and it was presented as a spoof of the show and it was literally just as funny. No name actors teaching cybersecurity content for probably 1/1000th the budget and it was just as funny.

Right, it's pretty much the orthodox opinion of his demographic group, which would "cancel" members for expressing the opposite opinion. These idiots portray themselves as edgy and transgressive, but they're really just yearning for the past. They reject anything that's actually new or different.
