Not a great economy alert! Wall Street Bets users think Palantir spiked today because The Onion story titled “Palantir Acquires Pentagon for $800 Billion” hit their front page. They’re guessing trading bots indexed the top post on the subreddit reddit not understanding source.

Idiots gonna idiot. My daughter discovered a fellow student in one of her college study groups had plagiarized an article for their project, which is bad enough. But it was an Onion article. She's probably in Trump's cabinet by now.

A German computer magazine stopped making April first stories because there were several stories that had become reality and others where readers had taken a true story for the joke because everything was plausible.

Don't give him any ideas! I can hear him now: "I sold my beautiful Pentagon today, it's called that because it's shaped like a pentagon. I didn't really want to part with it, but, the deal was so good, so much money! No one makes deals like me!"

Ben, can you publish an onion story about how smart and handsome I am? As long as the bots know, that’s good enough.

if The Onion headlines are the things that bring about the collapse of the betting/gambling industry by inadvertently making all the robogamblers fuck everything up, im here for it lmao

watch the Onion be the only organization brought up on charges of market manipulation for the entire second Trump term

Honestly, the number of algo trades triggered by satirical headlines is wild. We saw a similar blip with that fake Elon tweet last year. Makes you wonder how much "news" is just bots chasing noise.

"Palantir leaves security business to farm Onions" might do the trick and be so ridiculous that The Onion can fight in court if sued for damages

In a world where SCOTUS wasn't bought and paid for, I would be able to confidently say, "If your algorithm over-indexes on satire, it is not the responsibility of the satirist to make itself hospitable to your tools," but we are Here and Now for some reason.

So you're saying y'all can fuck up these oligarch ponzi schemes because bots don't understand sarcasm? Can you please have the new InfoWars guy do fake ads for oligsrchs & progressive companies as anti-Joe-Rogan-Alex-Jones? CryptoWars? InsiderWars? MTG paid Dipping Wars? LockStock&2SmokingTips?

As funny as this seems it looks like a lot of tech stocks spiked this morning so I'm not sure the Onion article has anything to do with why

If only we had something that could analyze data that was capable of logical thought and understood source reliability… HMMMMM… oh well!

Then Musk steps in and starts a bidding war. Vertical integration of SpaceX. New contracts for armoured EVs and mind control headsets for drones. How do we buy shares in the Pentagon?

If people use prediction markets that are informed by The Onion, then I think they are working perfectly for those who designed them. The point always was to rob people.

...and that was how U.S. v The Onion came about, children, when the supreme court ruled that speech that confuses the bots and scrapers was less free than your uncle's crypto stash.

This is important for y'all to understand. 1. Spikes after 4 PM. After hours. Trading is thin, so small purchases make more movement. 2. It's a <5% move, that's a hiccup. 3. Last 30 Days, down ~25%. 40% from it's high. It's funny, but you are contributing to the manipulation.

Wall Street is no longer an indicator of how the country or economy is doing. With the advent of "sentiment" trading and meme stocks like SpaceX it's no long about financials and everything about BS narratives and hype. We're quickly a house with eroding foundations and termites.

The real joke is that Palantir would never buy the Pentagon for $800B when they can own the Pentagon and get PAID for the privilege.

We are living in the dumbest of timelines lol. Now that we know their trading bots are so dumb clearly The Onion needs to game this out and bankrupt some fools lol.

absolutely love the counter force to the government's own market manipulation. The power of satire is greatly underestimated in today's twitchy world of investment and stocks. This makes me think of r/wallstreetbets and the short seller squeeze of Gamestop (who recently was contemplating a big M&A)

LOL, this is the perfect distillation of what I've been saying all along is AI's Achilles heel: It has no bullshit detector, and I can't imagine how they could program one.

Proof there’s nobody behind the wheel anymore and that the market is ran by algorithms and bots. It’s why oil hasn’t rocketed like it’s supposed to. It follows the headLIES from Trump.

Wouldn’t it be funny if more satirical outlets pop up and stories like these are unloaded, and some bots or AI scooping it up like a whale in an ocean with krills, polluting its own ecosystem and corrupts its own data points?

I mean yeah. AI may suck, but it is us humans that made it. Most of us are idiots so it tracks that AI would be just as braindead as the dipshit living next door.

Put out a story that reads like "huge growth projections leaked for business X" but then be very direct that the investment vehicle is charitable donations to St Judes hospital, and see if they get a sudden influx of donations from bots with the keys to bank accounts.

- If The Onion now knows they can manipulate stock market bots positively, maybe they can affect them negatively — Maybe they can tank a stock for a company that doesn’t comport with the interests of We The People — With no liability because they are a well known spoof site…

Wall Street is a joke and they're too high on their own supply to admit it. Stock prices and business fundamentals exist on entirely different planes of existence.

The stock market is a place where bubbles arise because of hearsay of nothing Where nothing goes to create artificial value based on nothing but euphoria and blind faith in greed Where nonsense goes to turn a profit then tell itself it's smart for doing so This proves that

Seems unlikely. Typically a headline like "X acquires Y" doesn't move markets at all (because it means the acquisition has happened, which means that it's not a surprise, which means markets should not move.) And typically a headline like "X to acquire Y" would *hurt* the price of X.

If you look at a chart of PLTR from yesterday there's no particularly noticeable spike, so he's probably zoomed in on something totally inconsequential. WallStreetBets users as a whole generally think they're a lot more sophisticated than they actually are.
