Stephen Root appreciation post. One of the great character actors. When he shows up in a thing, you know that thing is going to be excellent.

Whenever I see him in anything, I inevitably screech out “Mr James!” And that’s me. Locked in. He’s always so good in whatever he does, but he’s always Mr James in my head.

For context Jimmy had a Biography written about himself- it sold horribly in the US but did GREAT in Japan so his idea was to translate the Japanese BACK to English and sell lots of copies

Watching him in The Man in the High Castle right now! Should have said binge-watching. Read the book a long time ago, but just watching the series on our hot Oklahoma afternoons when it's dangerous to be outside!

Goal for the month. Go through his filmography and watch/rewatch ... everything. Going through the comments, I realized how many times I'd seen him. He was the second reason I wanted to watch Widow's Bay. Best decision ever.

A photo montage without "News Radio"? A show where Stephen Root was great and *for the last time in his career* Joe Rogan was interesting and funny.

First thing I saw him in was his first film, Crocodile Dundee 2 in 1988, as the FBI agent following Mick. He's also great in Idiocracy as Judge Hank "The Hangman" BMW.

He is so quietly wonderful that most people don't even think about his performances. They just lift the entire project without Root even needing to be in the lead. Honestly, this is what great acting looks like.

I always loved News Radio more than I should have, and I cant forgive it for jumpstarting the careers of both Joe Rogan and Andy Dick, but Root was histerical in it. He and Phil Hartman were gold.

I never understood why news radio didn’t run for 20 years. Root was so good in it. Office Space, Coen brothers used him a lot! Oh Brother Where Art thou, LadyKiller, No Country for Old Guys. Great character actors are the secret sauce in a movie. Root is one of the greats.

🎯We were watching Widows Bay, didn't realize he was in it. He shows up on screen & my husband delightedly says "oh hey that's STEPHEN ROOT. He is awesome." So yup!

I loved that show. So weird to think how the actors are so politically different now (Joe Rogan, Kathy Griffin) and if they got along then.

First time I ever noticed Root, I was a kid and he showed up on Night Court. He was playing a man having a nervous breakdown who thought he was death.

Amen to all that! It's a tough call, but the 'Barry' episode with the little martial artist may be his best performance. I'm forever telling people to watch that episode, even if they don't watch the rest of the series. It's perfect unto itself. And Mr Root is the root of it.
